It is possible to boost your metabolism in midlife and it's probably not going to happen from a diet. In fact everything about a diet will tell your body to burn fewer calories and slow your metabolism and deplete energy. Why do we collectively still resort to eating less? That's going to be a puzzle to solve for all time perhaps. But perhaps not for you. Because in this episode we talk about a far more uplifting option and honestly we review the reality of eating less and what it REALLY does to your body. My Guest: Nagina Abdullah is a weight-loss coach for women and professionals and founder of the website MasalaBody.com. She coaches women to boost metabolism naturally and simplifies creating a healthy lifestyle, even if they have tried everything. Episode 3 of season 11 of The Lifestyle First Podcast is centred around the F in the Lifestyle First Method. F is for FOOD: WHAT FOOD CHOICES MATCH YOUR NEEDS? The big questions I get asked all the time are “What's the best diet?” and “What should(n't) I eat?” It's complex, there's no perfect diet. There's always so much emotion associated with eating, and what you need to do is give yourself unconditional permission to eat and to see food as your life source and energy source. Talking about food as carbohydrates, proteins or fats is not talking about real food. Food is a package, not an isolated nutrient – food is packed with nutrients, flavours, smells, textures, colours – all of which add to the sensory and nutritional input of your food experiences. * * * * * In this episode, to help me explore the subject of food & in particular the subject of sugar I invited along MasalaBody.com founder Nagina Abdullah. Nagina Abdullah is on a mission to help ambitious women lose weight sustainably without sacrifice through her coaching business https://masalabody.com Nagina was 40 Pounds Overweight with an incredibly demanding career and two small kids and went from feeling tired, sluggish, and frustrated to melting off 40 lbs in 9 months and her sustainable approach has helped keep the weight off for years. *** In the episode Nagina & I discuss the question “how do you get rid of sugar cravings?” The two references we explore are: Robert Lustig . Metabolical: The truth about processed food and how it poisons people and the planet https://www.amazon.co.uk/Metabolical-processed-poisons-people-planet/dp/1529350077 Sweetening of the global diet, particularly beverages: patterns, trends, and policy responses by Prof Barry M Popkin, PhD & Corinna Hawkes, PhD https://www.thelancet.com/journals/landia/article/PIIS2213-8587(15)00419-2/fulltext ••••• As always we give you three actions to take away from the episode which are: 1. Focus on what you can add to your diet to satiate your craving for the sweet rather than focusing on what you have to remove. Spices such as cinnamon can be a great place to start & can give a 'sweet' flavour whilst actually reducing your blood sugar. 2. Focus on a 'Protein More' approach. Protein creates satiety & a full feeling that can help keep cravings at bay. 3. Drink 'de-bloating' water. Add 2 lemons, 1 cucumber & 10-12 mint leaves to a 6 glass pitcher of water & allow them to steep over night in your fridge. This is not only a great tasting drink but can also help avoid that need for a sweet fix. * * * * * Find Out More/Contact/Follow: https://masalabody.com Get your copy of the 'SWEET SPICE CHEAT SHEET' for free at https://masalabody.com/sweetspicepdf/ Socials https://www.linkedin.com/in/nagina-abdullah/ https://www.instagram.com/masalabody/ https://www.facebook.com/masalabody Contact Nagina at nagina@masalabody.com You can discover more & connect with Dr. Alka at the links below: Newsletter: https://dralkapatel.com/mailinglist Website: https://dralkapatel.com/ Socials: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dralkapat... https://www.facebook.com/dralkapateluk https://www.instagram.com/dralkapateluk https://twitter.com/dralkapateluk * * * * * DISCLAIMER: This content does not constitute or substitute personal one-to-one professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. If you’ve been wanting to lose weight and find yourself getting excited about the new fad diet, I’m here to let you off the hook. You don’t need that. In fact, I am totally against all of the crazy messages the diet industry shoves down our throats, trying to trigger our insecurities. We all know that’s what they’re doing but they craft such compelling messages, the next thing you know we’re buying a thigh master… or a bag of powder filled with ingredients we can’t even pronounce. Meet Nagina Abdullah. Nagina lost 40 pounds over a period of several months and was going to just leave it at that. She works with those who’ve found success in so many areas but just couldn’t crack the weight loss code. Maybe you can relate to that. Something everybody struggles with is weight gain and weight loss. It's the primary reason people come to see a health coach in the first place, even if it's not the biggest result people will see. Nagina Abdullah is a health coach for female professionals, corporate executives, and 7-figure entrepreneurs, and the founder of http://masalabody.com (MasalaBody.com). She teaches tested and perfected metabolism-boosting strategies to help women lose 20-40 pounds while working 60+ hours a week, even if they have tried everything else. Nagina has a degree in Molecular and Cell Biology from UC Berkeley, an MBA from NYU Stern, AND worked for a top four consulting firm as a management consultant before starting her health coaching business. She has been featured in Health.com, Business Insider, People.com, and many more. What is wrong with our weight loss industry today? The biggest problem with weight loss is an obsession with diets. People often don't think about what they're eating until they hit a point where they hit a diagnosis or something makes them realize they are unhappy in their body, and this kicks in a sense of urgency to lose as much weight as fast as possible. We're all sold the idea that diets are the quickest and easiest way to lose weight, so we typically end up following one. But diets are based around restriction without teaching you how to eat filling foods. Not to mention, when food is restricted you end up wanting it more! Nagina recommends that instead of dieting, we focus on creating tiny changes that result in an overall lifestyle change. The only way to make these changes last is to have a lifestyle transformation by going deep on changing your habits. How do we get these changes to stick? In order to make dietary changes that last, you have to enjoy the food that you eat. If you feel like you are punishing yourself with your food, you will always find excuses to treat yourself and go back to those guilty pleasures. The best way to start eating more vegetables and making sure you and your family enjoy them is to use spices. Besides having the power to make any vegetable taste delicious, spices also have so many health benefits. Cinnamon, for instance, has the ability to lower your blood sugar levels and store less fat in your body. It also gives you the sugar fix without actually using any sugar. Turmeric is another fantastic one with anti-inflammatory capabilities. Inflammation is a huge cause of body aches and health problems, not to mention visible puffiness and bloating. -- Resources: Learn more at https://masalabody.com/ (masalabody.com) Join the 5-Day Slim Down for Fierce, Feminine Leaders: https://masalabody.com/slimdown (masalabody.com/slimdown) Connect with Nagina Abdullah: https://www.facebook.com/groups/healthylifestyleprofessionalwomen (Facebook) | https://www.instagram.com/masalabody/ (Instagram) Visit https://thisishuso.com/rebel (thisishuso.com/rebel) and use the code REBEL25 to save $25 Get my free Lab Tracker Report by texting REBEL to 66866 Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living? I have indeed heard about spices as an aid to lose weight, and we're so lucky to have Health Coach Nagina Abdullah explain that in this episode. It's great timing because Christmas is just around the corner, so it's best that we are aware of what we eat before diving into all that holiday food. Personal Transformation Nagina Abdullah's success story was a result of a personal transformation. It was a constant struggle to be healthy, and like me, she tried practically every diet there is. Atkins, Paleo, South Beach diet---you name it, we tried it! Her weight issues went on after graduating from UC Berkley and New York University. She eventually she got married, had kids and found herself in a very demanding job as a management consultant in healthcare. Because of her hectic career, Nagina Abdullah led an unhealthy lifestyle of not getting any exercise and eating unhealthy food. Her frustration in losing weight consequently made her insecure. Turning Point One day, Nagina Abdullah remembers feeling exhausted. Hence, she wasn't able to take her kids out to play that day. That led her to deeply ponder about her weight issues and how it prevented her from being the best version of herself. Resolving to make a change, Nagina Abdullah decided to reprioritize. However, because of her busy work life, she found going to the gym virtually impossible. So Nagina Abdullah thought of first changing the way she ate. "I read online as well as books on nutrition and new ways of thinking. My background was in molecular and cell biology, and understanding how hormones worked," shares Nagina Abdullah. "So I started to adopt new scientific approaches and started to eat differently." Instead of focusing on eating fewer calories, Nagina Abdullah focused on the type of foods she was eating. She cut down on sugar and ate natural and healthier food. To decrease inflammation, Nagina Abdullah also learned to eat slower and ate healthier carbs than fast burning white carbs. Discovering Spices During her weight loss journey, Nagina Abdullah found out that adding spices made her food taste better. She, later on, found out that spices were a significant factor in helping her lose weight. "Spices are incredibly anti-inflammatory and increases metabolism. It also has a lot of other health benefits. After I made food changes, I lost 10 lbs. in a month without exercise," Nagina Abdullah recalls. Ecstatic over her initial success, Nagina Abdullah added two days of strength training and kept eating the same way. She was thrilled the weight kept coming off! She lost a total of 20 lbs. in 3 months and 40 lbs. in 9 months, exercising just two days a week. Ever since Nagina Abdullah started using spices in her food, she claims that it tastes so good and she feels so nourished. In fact, she says it has become a habit because she now actually craves vegetables. "The part I took with me was hormonal regulation. Understanding that insulin release is key to weight loss," explains Nagina Abdullah. "It's not only about calories. Essentially, it is the type of food you're putting in your body that is going to signal your insulin to be released either faster or slower." Benefits Of Spices Nagina Abdullah further explains that spices were used for centuries. Our ancestors used them, and it is something that kept us going as human species. However, we can't say the same for processed foods. And just what exactly are the benefits of spices? For one thing, spices are anti-inflammatory. It lowers blood pressure. And it stores less fat in your body, as well as decrease water retention. Nagina Abdullah also says that if you are feeling lethargic, chances are, your hormones are not acting in the right way because of inflammation of the body. Inflammation is caused by too much sugar, chemicals or stress. Our body apparently works better if we decrease inflammation. And by incorporating spices in our food, it protects us from diseases and even slows down the aging process. "Many people don't realize we have inflammation until we change the food we are eating. The body feels so different," Nagina Abdullah said. "For me, it was a game changer. I wasn't just eating to lose weight. Consequently, my body felt good and I felt better." Nagina Abdullah says a lot of people suffer from inflammation because of the food they eat. Add on to that; doctors prescribe drugs that merely mask the symptom. Ever heard the saying that stress causes weight gain? It does! This is because stress releases cortisol. Nagina Abdullah says it mobilizes blood sugar and acts as a systemic immune suppressant. That is why there is an inflammatory response. Nagina Abdullah attests that the transition is tricky, but you need to commit. She says that after balancing your body with the right kind of food, you won't crave food like you used to. Three Powerful Spices Now, we're in for a treat! Nagina Abdullah lists these three as the most powerful spices that you can incorporate into your diet: Cinnamon - It stabilizes blood sugar and curbs sugar cravings. - Cinnamon does not have insulin release, unlike sugar. When you are avoiding that insulin release, you're storing less fat. - Perfect to add in coffee, tea or smoothies. Turmeric - It fights inflammation. - Turmeric helps block fat and lower body fat. - It has mild, earthy taste. - It adds color to your food. - Try to make a golden smoothie, consisting of almond milk, turmeric, a dash of vanilla and a sprinkle of black pepper. Black pepper increases the absorption of turmeric by 2000 to 5000 percent. - Add turmeric to egg and sprinkle with cayenne pepper. Ginger - Increases digestion and decreases inflammation. - Perfect for teas. - Chop or grate to avoid the concentration of flavor. Masala Body Nagina Abdullah's website seeks to help people lose weight naturally through eating spices. Through her programs, she has successfully educated many clients on the right way to eat. She also shares that an efficient way to plan out meals is to do all your meal preps for the week on a Sunday. Apart from roasting vegetables, chicken or fish, she advises the use of glass containers to prolong the freshness of the cooked food. "You'll never feel deprived. And that's why it works. Because you have these natural health benefits, you'll feel so much better, and you'll end up wanting to do it more." Nagina Abdullah is a health coach for ambitious women and founder of the website MasalaBody.com. She teaches women her easy anti-inflammatory system for sustainable weight loss and higher energy levels. You can reduce inflammation in the body by just adding 1/2 to 1 teaspoon throughout the day to give yourself the full benefits. It's good to mix with black pepper because it dramatically increases the absorption of turmeric in the body by 2,000% and even more. Consume it after a post workout because your muscles are sore and you need to relax your muscles. You can add it to eggs, smoothies, and protein shakes. Cumin - Burn 3x as much fat Cumin has been proven to help burn up to three times as much body weight in a person's circumference. Better yet, cumin is tasty in so many different recipes. You can added it to any fish or meat dish to give it a great smoky taste. Nagin's favorite mix is combining cumin with sea salt, an pepper for a barbecue rub. Add some cayenne pepper for more spice. Cumin is also great to try in: Hummus Guacamole Egg salad Skinny Spice #1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJzVm3t790I Nagina's Meal Prep Hacks Nagina's number one hack is to simplify your batch cooking. You don't have to eat the same thing every day. Mix and match between several different options. 1 - Save Sunday for dishes that take a lot of time Use Sunday or whichever free day you have to make the dish that takes the longest amount of time. However, make sometime that's also easy like 1-3 different side dishes such as a nutritious carb or something with protein. Great side dishes can be: Lentils Beans Quinoa Eggplant Brussel sprouts Asparagus Mushrooms Roast the veggies in the oven with cumin, salt, pepper, and even cayenne if you wish. Use a slow cooker so that you can enjoy your day even more while the machine does all the work for you. 2 - Store Your Food in Glass Containers Ditch the plastic and always store your meal prep foods in glass containers. That way your food will stay fresh for longer amounts of time. 3 - Cook easy protein during the week If you want, marinate your protein meat (chicken, fish, pork, beef) on a Sunday so that you can cook it on a Monday. Bake, saute, roast etc. all you want. This way, you don't have to do all of your cooking on Sunday and you can break up the process. Join The Open Sky Fitness Podcast Group! That's right! What was the weirdest diet you've ever tried? What work out infomercial have you bought into recently? If not a super pumped infomercial, what workout trend have you gotten swept up into? How long did you stick to these? Did they even work? Well today's guest, Nagina Abdullah, has been on the weight loss rollercoaster herself. Always athletic, and trying every diet from Weight Watchers to South Beach, she was never able to achieve the body that she wanted, or keep off any weight she did loose. More importantly, nothing she ever tried got her excited. And so, like every other method, her health and fitness motivation faded. However, her determination returned after she had two kids, and she found that adding certain spices to her healthy meals helped her loose weight without exercise! This eventually led to the creation of her weight loss program and blog, Masala Body. Masala Body is all about helping women on the go find easy and healthy ways to loose weight, by using spices like cinnamon, tumeric, and cayenne in their meals. Growing up in an Indian household, Nagina was always exposed to meals loaded with a multitude of spices and flavors. She said the joy of life was in her childhood dishes, and by learning their health benefits and strategically adding them to her snacks and meals, she was able to loose 40 pounds in nine months! After struggling with her weight for 35 years, she ended up being 20 pounds under her pre-baby weight, and had finally reached her dream body. Not only that, but she had gained an excitement in her new diet that she hadn't had before, which made her stick to her regiment and keep the weight off. She had to share her progress and her method with others, so she started her blog that has now evolved into a coaching business. Since its creation in 2013, Masala Body has helped over 500 women loose up to 40 pounds. When Masala Body first started, she had no intention of monetizing it or really expanding it. The blog simply acted as an escape from her demanding job as a management consultant in New York City. It was when she hit an audience of 500 people that she got her first paying client, gained two more, that she knew she had a profitable business on her hands. She kept her full time job, though, for the income and stability. So she switched to a less demanding role at her company so she could invest time into her business and grow her blog. Before she switches to her blog full time, she wants to increase its profitability, and match what she has to invest in Masala Body for its success. These expenses have included classes in becoming a perfect copywriter, learning different softwares, tips in increasing her blog's publicity, and hiring business coaches. But she has faith in her business and the power of her guidance, and with stats like hers and her own experiences with her diet, Masala Body's effectiveness goes without saying! Hear more about the benefits of adding spices in your diet, how she juggles two jobs, and how Nagina makes loosing weight fun! In this episode you will... Learn to obtain profitability in your business so you can have the confidence to take the leap from a stable job to become a full time entrepreneur Make a business out of a personal struggle in order to help others Know what your key metrics are that signify growth in your business Get comfortable with investing a large amount of money into expanding your business and becoming a CEO and founder Figure out what elements in your life can be eliminated or cut down so you can focus on growing your business Find the health benefits of adding certain spices in your diet INSIGHTS "I was just amazed and thoroughly thrilled that people were paying me to help them for something I did...I had always had a full time salary and that's just how I thought you made money. And so for me to actually pitch my services and coach women to loose weight, something that was so personal to me and help other women do the same thing, and see them go through that; it was completely fulfilling." -Nagina Abdullah "There's multiple health benefits of adding spices to your diet, like high inflammation, less water rentention, increased fat burning, and decreased appetite...I lost 10 pounds in my first month without any exercise by changing what I was eating and adding these fat buring spices...and over the course of nine months, I lost 40 pounds." -Nagina Abdullah "After a lifetime of struggle, to have my dream body after two kids...I couldn't believe it. I would look at myself in the mirror everyday and say, 'How could this have happened so easily when I struggled for the last 35 years,' and that's when I started my business." -Nagina Abdullah RESOURCES Nagina Abdullah LinkedIn Masala Body Website Masala Body Facebook Masala Body Instagram Nagina Abdullah Twitter Sweet Spice Cheat Sheet (MasalaBody.com/Shediditherway) The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks

Today's guest has some experience raising super successful children. Have you heard of Ramit Sethi or Nagina Sethi Abdullah? They're siblings and both have been on So Money as guests. I'm lucky enough to call them friends, as well. Ramit is an entrepreneur and the New York Times bestselling author of "I Will Teach You To Be Rich" and his sister Nagina is a full-time consultant and the founder of the health and fitness program Masala Body. Believe it or not they have two additional siblings who are just as successful. So today on the show - how the heck do you raise financially successful and happy kids? Mom Neelam Sethi and her husband were featured in a New York Times article, "How to Raise a Financial Wizard." And now Neelam, who is a retired elementary school teacher, is spilling the details with us - for the first time on a podcast. Neelam and her husband immigrated to the US after an arranged marriage in India. They raised her four children in California and sent them all to prestigious universities on a single income without ANYONE going into debt...How? For as strict of a parent she may have been there were some financial rules, she says, were meant to be broken. And what were the money boundaries Neelam needed to set for herself as a mom and wife? Nagina Abdullah is a weight-loss coach for busy women, and the founder of Masala Body.
Today's guest is my friend Nagina Sethi Abdullah. She is a management consultant, weight-loss and food coach, and founder of Masala Body. It's an online resource for healthy recipes and weight-loss tips for the busy working woman. I have been to one of her cooking events and I have to say, for someone who more or less just knows how to boil water, make cereal and scrambled eggs, I learned several great recipes from Nagina. Really, really easy ones, I was so inspired when I left that evening, and I got to meet some amazing women as well. She is really developing an amazing community around nutrition and food and healthy living. I'm so, so excited for her and all there is to come.
