Brad Welton of Sierra Vista, AZ emailed to ask about upcoming trips. initially. I told him about my Celtic Invasion of Galicia, but of course, that is moved back until 2026. We're going to Wexford, Ireland this summer. He followed up and wrote: "Ah Ha, thanks for the web address for the Celtic Invasions. I will check it out. Thanks Marc!  I still have a number of iPod's that I keep working, My favorite is the Shuffle. I use it to play your podcasts whilst out bicycling. The tunes really pump me up; especially needed for longer distance, more strenuous rides. Thank you for all of your hard work over the years. I have recently been listening to some of your early recordings and hear you rejoicing at reaching #60 or the like, and think, 'man, you wouldn't believe what you have accomplished by now'! You have been so prolific." John Thompson emailed: "Hi Marc, Best of luck with your upcoming surgery. And thanks again for another wonderful year of music on the podcast. Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year (with a quick recovery)." Elise of the band Charmas wrote: "Honestly, Marc, the times are changing. I'm watching it happen and not sure what to think going forward. The pandemic lockdown shattered peoples' long - standing traditions and now stepping right back into those shoes feels as unsatisfying as attending a previously - loved concert that now has only half attendance. Charmas' clientele for performing at Irish parties aged out and they simply aren't having parties anymore. St. Pat's is a dying holiday. Bagpiping is still going strong but the Highland Games events haven't rebounded to their former size and it's hard to get new generations excited from scratch. Bands like Tempest are still playing for their longtime followers. Bands like Altan have provided so much great instrumental music that there's enough supply in the world to last forever, without more being produced. If Celtic musicians want to get fed by playing music, they have to create something new and necessary for the next generations. I have no idea what that should be, but I think the best way to get peoples' attention is to create music that is truly innovative, relevant, and useful! It's a good challenge if we decide we are up for it :)"

I always find it interesting to see which artists I feature the most on the podcast in a given year. Sometimes these artists crossover the songs and tunes on the Celtic Top 20. It's fascinating to see. Go read the article on our Patreon. Which you can follow and get blogs like this for free. Our Make100 Kickstarter campaign is FULLY FUNDED! We funded 100 Celtic Pins, 100 Celtic CDs and 100 Celtic shirts as part of the campaign. One of the things I did not plan for was Stretch Goals. It took me a moment, but I came up with one that makes me very happy–an exclusive compilation album. Here's how it works. If we can raise $6000, then I will put together a bonus compilation album. Everyone who supports the campaign at $25+ will get a copy. I'll also print 100 physical copies of the album on CD. The album will feature 12+ songs and tunes from our Highlight Reels. Basically, I'm gonna contact bands and see if I can license enough tracks for a bonus album. I'll start with the Celtic Top 20. If I can get enough tracks, I'll stop there. If I can't then I will dig into our next most - popular Highlight Reels. Go check out our Kickstarter right now. THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST! You are amazing. Appreciate everything that you do, thanks for continuing to bring us this great music" Ben Q emailed: "Hi Marc, Huge fan with a fun story for you from today: I was changing my daughter's diaper and singing a little song, in this case "The Parting Glass," to keep us both entertained. A lot of the time she will say “Daddy, stop singing!” which hurts a little but is totally fine, ha ha. But today she said “Dad I want you to sing ‘Down by yon green bushes!'” That's the first line of a song that I actually learned maybe two years ago from Niamh Parsons's appearance on your podcast, “Bonnie Woodhall,” and Niamh told a great story to go with it as well, about trying over multiple late - night sessions with her fellow musicians to remember the whole thing. I loved that song as well as her story, and I sing that a lot around my house, but  -  me not sounding much like Niamh when I sing  -  I don't get a lot of requests around here exactly, and it really tickled me that my kid requested that one. Anyway, please keep up the good work Marc, and if it's not too late to say so, a very happy New Year to you." Patrick Rieger sent a picture and asked about photo sizes for the podcast: "Thank you. I can set the width at 1200 pixels. The photos are already at 72dpi. Here is a photo of The Craic Show on September 3, 2023, during the opening gate act of the Pittsburgh Renaissance Festival. The Donegal Doggs can be seen seated on the left waiting their turn. I'll keep the photos coming. We'll be attending Great Lakes, Pittsburgh, and Ohio again this year. We planned the dates to attend Ohio in 2024 during Pub SIng this last year."

Sounds Profitable: Adtech Applied

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 11, 2022 9:38

Today on The Download from Sounds Profitable; ad tech firms are under fire for data scraping, Amazon joins the social audio market, YouTube is paying podcasters to incorporate video, and more. Morning Brew’s Ryan Barwick reports that trade groups acting on behalf of publishers from the US, UK, and Canada are accusing ad-tech firms of unfairly scraping metadata from websites Once collected, this allegedly ill-gotten data is used to create contextual advertising segments for clients without the publisher’s consent, also undercutting the publishers’ attempts to directly sell contextual advertising deals. “Now that third-party cookies are dying and some ad dollars are shifting to contextual advertising—ads based on the content of the media, not on personal information—publishers want a (better) seat at the table and stronger terms as the industry adopts new technologies.” Richard Reeves, managing director of the Association of Online Publishers, summarized the issue of companies scraping data. “What we are now seeing is people almost brazenly walking through your home, and removing your furniture, and selling your assets elsewhere. And you don’t even know that they’re doing it, or you can’t receive any value for it. Just because you can doesn’t mean to say you should.” Data scraping isn’t new to podcasting, either. Transcription happens in podcasting, with and without a publisher's consent. It’s likely however this wider publisher issue plays out will have trickle-down effects to what companies can do with unlicensed podcast transcripts. Amazon has a new social audio app to make podcasters' dreams of being a DJ come true. Brad Hill of Rain News reports: “While early reports compare Amp to Clubhouse, Amazon’s promotional emphasis is on building interactive music shows, something like live, interactive radio.” Amp brings to mind an obscure podcasting tool Spotify launched for Anchor in late 2020. The feature, titled Shows with Music at launch, allows podcasters on Anchor to slot any song in the Spotify catalog between any pre-recorded podcast segments. Listeners with Spotify Premium would experience a seamless transition as if the music was baked into the podcast, while free listeners would hear a thirty-second preview of the song. Shows with Music still exists, technically, but has fallen by the wayside to become a feature hidden in the Anchor interface. Much like the forgotten podcasts from big-name creators covered last week. Amp, conversely, only requires listeners to sign up for a free Amp account to listen to creators. The Verge’s Jack Kastrenakes writes: “Amazon is positioning this as more of a radio-style service than a live chat service (there’s even a five-person cap on callers right now), which is probably for the best.” Shows with Music was a cool feature that enabled podcasters to live out their radio DJ dreams in a copyright-friendly manner. Another platform with a massive collection of licensed content at their disposal playing in this podcasting-adjacent space might just lead to more creativity and innovation in the social audio sphere. On Tuesday, podcasting ad tech company Gumball announced they had raised ten million in Series A funding. Brad Hill of Rain News reports, “Gumball, which was started by podcast comedy network Headgum, allows advertisers to programatically buy pre-recorded host-read ads. The system offers real-time inventory browsing, demographic audience targeting, and verification of placement and listening. The company lists a few brands which have used the system — Casper, CBS, Netflix, OkCupid, Squarespace, Warby Parker, and others.” Naturally, the Gumball system is deployed across the entire Headgum network, serving ads on flagship podcasts like The Doughboys, Punch up the Jam, and We Hate Movies. YouTube is taking podcasting seriously enough to put their money where their mouth is. Last Friday Bloomberg’s Ashely Carman reported both independent podcasters and podcast networks, all of which asked for anonymity, received offers ranging from $50,000 to $300,000 to create filmed versions of their episodes, as well as “other kinds of videos.” Video podcasts on YouTube historically have done well. As the platform matured from cat clips to encouraging content creators to make longer and longer content, the unedited video chat show took off. Productions like The H3H3 Podcast and The Joe Rogan Experience saw great success embracing the platform. That said, as Carman said, “However, the cost to build a studio, hire editors, and develop a fully functioning video publishing pipeline can deter networks and shows from adopting the platform.” In addition to these cash injections implying YouTube wants to seed more of a professionally-produced podcasting atmosphere, there are small infrastructure moves to suggest this is a long-term plan. Alex Castro at The Verge reminds readers that back in October YouTube began allowing Canadian users to listen to videos while the device was not focusing on the YouTube app or was locked. As YouTube power users in the US can attest, this feature is pushed very hard in YouTube Premium advertising as a good reason to sign up. Without putting on a podcast-branded tin-foil hat, it seems like making the ability to use YouTube like a podcasting app would be a huge step towards YouTube courting more podcasters and their audiences. On Tuesday The Hollywood Reporter’s J. Clara Chan published an exclusive announcement that UTA has launched Audio IQ, a data analytics service to facilitate podcast deals. The service will make use of social media, search results, and other open-source data to inform both clients and agents of a podcasts’ health to facilitate dealmaking. “While podcast analytics can often rely on historical data points like number of downloads or past ad revenue, UTA’s Audio IQ analyses also offer future projections — a tool that is particularly key in negotiations for shows that have not yet launched or for identifying emerging talent.” Audio IQ comes onto the field as massive podcast outfits buy up previously third-party analytics companies - see our February 18th episode for coverage of the Spotify acquisition of Chartable - and that atmosphere has UTA IQ lead Joe Kessler concerned. As Kessler is quoted by Chan’s article: “I’m hopeful that this announcement serves as a wake-up call for the podcasting industry to somehow coalesce around a common source of truth and data for the industry, because it’s sorely needed as it’s maturing.” Finally, a smaller bit of news that’s not technically a full news story yet, but we feel is worth keeping an eye on as things develop. There was something about Tuesday this week that lead to podcasting announcements. Ashley Carman tweeted the exclusive scoop that three senior leaders at Megaphone are leaving. CEO Brendan Monaghan, CRO Matt Turk, and COO Jason Cox, all in their positions prior to the Spotify buyout, have been confirmed to be leaving the company after their one-year contracts expired. The three are now starting a blockchain company. The Download is a production of Sounds Profitable.

I also listen to your instrumental episodes while doing my physics homework. Thanks so much for creating this podcast!"   Debra VanTuyll emailed: "Hi Mark --I was just listening to your podcast while I work on a research grant. Pictures would be way too dull to share. However, I heard you mention not knowing of any Irish bands in Atlanta. I'm sure you know John Maschinot. He has a group that plays some. Then, there's the Atlanta Junior Irish Ceili Band that Katherine Irwin Thomas runs. Over in Augusta, you've got de Ceádaoin, which is also more of a ceili band. We do sessions twice a month, once at each of the two breweries here (come join us if you're in this area. We're at Riverwatch Brewery the last Friday of the month and Savannah River the middle Wednesday of the month) and occasional gigs. We're presently working on a Christmas CD that will feature some little-known Christmas jigs and reels as well as some better known carols. We'll send you a copy when it's out. Also, Lillie Morris has a number of children violin students, and they play occasionally in Harlem. At any rate, my main reason for writing was to let you know that the Irish music scene may be nano-sized in Georgia, but there are a few of us fighting the good fight out here in the hinterlands! Best wishes from east Georgia!" Ed Stoffer responded to a Celtic Music Magazine email: "Hey Marc, Yes I did get all the music downloads. In every episode of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, I mention "celebrating Celtic culture through music." It’s easy to miss the nuance of this mission statement. This podcast is not just about the traditional music of Ireland or Scotland. It is about all of those under-served aspects of Celtic music, and its many forms, from around the globe. It's about the fusion, the change, and the growth of the musical traditions of the Celts. So I found it disappointing to hear someone attack my guest host Susan J. E. Ritta last week for promoting the women of Celtic music and FairPle, an organization dedicated to giving Celtic women in music a voice. It's both disappointing and rather disgusting. Women are under-represented throughout the music business, including Celtic music. If you've spent ANY time studying the music business since it began, like I have, you would know this to be true. Sadly, some folks feel threatened by those who are marginalized and gain a fair footing. It happened to the Irish when they first came to American. If you have studied the history of the Celts, you will note the Celts too were marginalized. And when you belittle one marginalized group, you disgrace all of our Celtic culture. You disgrace the history and suffering the Celts endured and overcame. So let me be clear. The women of Celtic music deserve our support. If you disagree, that's your choice. But I will continue to fight for these amazing women and promote FairPle and any organization that stands up against small-minded people who refuse to change with history. So whether you're a new listener or long-time, if that's you, I wish you a fond farewell. This podcast is not for you. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com Allison Walker-Elders emailed from DC: "Hi Marc,I've been meaning to write this email for weeks! During your episode # 405 (Fight Like a Celtic Woman) I was so moved by Heather Dale's song "One of Us" that I had to stop in the middle of my hour-long run and have a good cry. The song reminded me of every woman I have ever looked up to in my life, personally or academically or in my career. I don't know if it was intentional on Heather Dale's part, but I was strongly reminded of the 2016 American election-- while I didn't always agree with Secretary Clinton, she would have made a great president and I was proud that she was one of us. Remembering that feeling of pride combined with the devastation of her loss while listening to "One of Us" brought me right back to that moment in the early hours of November 9th, 2016. Thank you for everything that you do to raise up the voices of underrepresented Celtic musicians and songwriters.I especially appreciated Lady Susan's episode this past week and can't wait to listen to other episodes of her show. If I were to request anything from your show, maybe it would be a longer episode for workouts--I'll be running a marathon later this summer and plan on listening to your show while I run it in the beautiful mountains of Washington State." Thank you so much Allison for your touching response. I'm so happy the song moved you. It's become a favorite of my daughter Kenzie too. And I'm quite proud of that. You are right. There are many voices underrepresented in the Celtic community, especially from Celtic women. I know a quarterly episode is a very small contribution. But I'm proud I can add that into the world. And while I originally planned it just for 2019, I've since changed decided to extend it into the future. As for the longer workout episodes, may I should add that as a Patreon Milestone--Celtic Marathon Training. That'd be fun.

Doing so, however, alienates those of us that despise social media in all its forms. Legacy platforms are where you began and I can only hope that you continue." Glen Singer emailed: "Hi, Have never listened to Celtic music. That said, I saw your podcasts, so what the heck, I gave it a listen. Wow - fantastic! Just finished walking around Halifax, and listened to your new posting on the Texas festival. I am hooked. Being that I am a newbie, are there any introductory Celtic music podcasts out there? I know the hard work that goes into the entire podcast process-You do it well: combination of music and context/dialogue. Kind Regards."
