"I'm a big fan of a very specific genre of crime novels, which is the Golden Age novels, the Agatha Christies and the GK Chestertons, the novels of the 1940s and '50s. I don't get to read those types of books any more, where at the heart of the book is a very classic murder mystery, a whodunnit. You're not really that concerned about realism; it's not very gritty; there's not a lot of murders that are very unpleasant. Someone just drops dead and everyone's concerned about who's done it. I wanted to write a book like that. These days, the kind of crime that's being written — there's a lot of police procedurals; there's a lot of realistic crime. I wanted to veer away from all of that. There's so much going on that's unpleasant that people really like to have a break from all of that. You know, it's nice to worry about something as frothy as a murder mystery that you can curl up with over a cup of coffee!" - Samyukta Bhowmick, author, A Fatal Distraction, talks to Manjula Narayan about her cosy crime novel set in Delhi.

One of the most exciting things about the streaming age is the sheer amount of acting talent we're inundated with week after week. From exciting new actors that have exploded onto the scene to renowned actors finally getting their due in shows like Jamtara, Panchayat, Scam 1992, Paatal Lok, The Family Man, Delhi Crime, and Mirzapur to name but a few. To examine just how much streaming has done for casting and vice versa, I sat down with two leading casting directors. Kavish Sinha has worked on shows such as Rocket Boys, Mumbai Diaries, Rudra, Avrodh and Undekhi, and Panchami Ghavri is behind the casting of series like Class, Mismatched and Masaba Masaba. Together, the two spoke to Suchin about the importance of an actor's social media following, the scourge of influencers, how easy it is to sell a show of all newcomers, and the casting demands of platforms that annoy them the most.

Shefali Shah has never been the kind to take the path that's got many travelers on it. Her roles have never been conventional, she's always playing a character that has something to say or leaves an impact. From playing a minor girl's role in Rangeela to portraying the role of an urban - Indian housewife who cannot find the confidence to leave her broken marriage in Dil Dhadakne Do, Shefali Shah's performances have been path-breaking. However, her character in International Emmy Win web series ‘Delhi Crime' as DCP Vartika Chaturvedi was a game changer in more ways than one and it left a resounding effect on the hearts and minds of audiences and critics alike. Miss Conduct: A True Crime Podcast

This episode is about Sonu Punjaban. It is a depressing episode. Good luck with it.Sonu Punjaban is an Indian sex trafficker who was convicted and sentenced for trafficking a minor. She was sentenced to 24 years, with a very low likelihood of being let go for good behavior. Sonu is also known as Geeta Arora. She was alleged to be a kingpin of the sex trafficking trade of Delhi and the NCR region for many years. It is also alleged that her clients included high-profile businessmen, and to a certain extent, the Delhi police looked away or didn't interfere. She also employed a large list of henchmen, whose jobs included protecting these women and escorting them to places like Kolkata, Mumbai, Rajasthan and Punjab. Sonu was arrested in 2007 under suspicion of contravention of the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act. But in a few weeks, she received bail and was set free. She was arrested again in 2008 for a similar offense, and set free again. She was arrested again in 2011… and guess what happened? She was let go again. In 2017, her last arrest was for the trafficking, drugging, torture and abuse of a minor girl. For this, she was finally convicted and jailed for 24 years in Tihar jail, in Delhi. In July 2020, Sonu was convicted under various provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 or the POSCO. She was found guilty of administering drugs forcefully to a minor girl, selling her for sexual exploitation, and keeping her locked up and torturing her ruthlessly. When informed of her sentence, Sonu attempted suicide while still in Tihar jail, just hours after the conviction. She was rescued, hospitalised, and eventually shifted back to jail to spend the rest of her sentence. In the words of the judge that sentenced her – “The shameful deeds of Sonu Punjaban deprives her of any leniency from the courts.” ALSO!! I remember when I watched Delhi Crime, it was gut wrenching, and took me back to the time when news reports were trickling in about Jyoti Singh’s gruesome rape and death. The show gave me a chance to understand how the Delhi Police went about nabbing all those involved.  The hard hitting docu-drama was awarded the International Emmy Award in November last year, becoming the first show from India to win an Emmy. But the show was initially declined by Netflix. It’s this need to champion independent voices that Apoorva Bakshi is most passionate about as her role as a producer. She has also spearheaded National Award winning movies such as Shut Up Sona and Leeches.  As one of the youngest producers in South Asia, she is the co-founder of Golden Karavan and Managing Partner at Project Fuel. October is almost here and we've got a show that's tastier than pumpkin spice - We start with "The Artist's Wife" which stars Leno Olin as the wife of the renowned abstract artist Richard Smythson (Bruce Dern), who is plunged into a late-life crisis when her husband is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and is in danger of not completing the paintings for his final show. And if that's not enough angst for you Bill McCuddy tells us about "Delhi Crime" which follows the Delhi Police investigation into the finding of the men who perpetrated a deadly crime that made international news. And speaking of crime, there's also "Kajillionaire." It stars Evan Rachel Wood as a woman whose life is turned upside down when her criminal parents invite an outsider to join them on a major heist they're planning. But wait, there's also "Enola Holmes." It's on Netflix and stars Millie Bobbie Brown ("Stranger Things") as Enola Holmes-Sherlock's teen sister-who discovers her mother missing, and sets off to find her, becoming a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young Lord. Any normal podcast would call that enough, but we're not what you call normal. So we also discuss that strange Emmy Awards Show last week and well as the upcoming season of "Saturday Night Live." As always, Neil Rosen, Bill McCuddy and Bill Bregoli are on hand and we should mention that we're sponsored by The Accutron Show, because, why not!

Episode 33 of the Khandaan podcast brings you one of our favorite movies, 2007’s Om Shanti Om. Directed by Farah Khan, this Shahrukh Khan-starrer was also Deepika Padukone’s debut film. Co-starring (Chowkidar) Kirron Kher as Maa, Shreyas Talpade as Friend, and all of Bollywood as backup, OSO is an homage to Hindi film. It should surprise nobody that co-hosts Asim, Amrita, and Sujoy love this film. What’s the thread that connects _Love, Death, and Robots_, _PM Narendra Modi_ the movie, Netflix’s _Delhi Crime_, and a documentary accusing Michael Jackson of paedophilia, _Leaving Neverland_? All four, feature on this podcast. That’s what. On this episode of Pop Sanskriti we’re joined by Jaskirat Singh Bawa, a journalist who covered the Nirbhaya gang-rape incident(the focus of Netflix's _Delhi Crime_) from start to end, and he’s going to tell us what Delhi Crime got wrong about the case, and what it got right. Why does Love, Death and Robots get a 20 on 10 for creativity, direction and production? Nearly ten years after Michael Jackson’s death why did two men accuse him of sexually abusing them when they were children? Also, what’s the deal with PM Narendra Modi, the movie? Listen to all of that and tonnes more, on this episode of The Quint’s pop culture podcast - Pop Sanskriti!

On this week's episode of The Awful and Awesome Entertainment Wrap, hosts Rajyasree Sen and Abhinandan Sekhri cover the Patriot Act episode by Hasan Minhaj on India's elections, Netflix shows Delhi Crime and Cricket Fever, a short film, and a lot more. Holding the conversation baton, Abhinandan kicks off with a rant on the quality of short films being made, saying: "Short films are an indulgent filmmaker’s time pass.” They then discuss Cricket Fever, which is a sneak peek into the lives and dressing rooms of players and officials, spiced with how efficient and decisive Akash Ambani is as a leader. Abhinandan narrows the discussion down, saying: "So it's basically positioning Akash Ambani as a genius taking our country to a different level of success.”Next up is Hasan Minhaj's India episode of Patriot Act, where the hosts discuss how Minhaj simplified the idea of India's elections without taking any sides and presented a neutral show. They mention how Minhaj not only talked about Yogi Adityanath but also questioned Shashi Tharoor about his own controversies. Rajyasree points out the hurdles Hasan faces, saying: "He’s Indian, he’s Muslim, he’s brown. It’s not easy for him.” Abhinandan says he found the show a bit "plain". They then discuss the latest ad films by Mothers Recipe, specifically their idea of unrealistic cooking timeframes. Referring to a play, Rajyasree decodes this mystery of fast cooking: "Maybe they have a hidden Ramu who does all the cooking for them." For this and a lot more, tune in!
