Following her father's passing 10 years ago, Deanna Clayton's artwork took an unexpected turn when she found herself modeling clay into a figurative vessel rather than a decorative one. The translation of the clay form into glass symbolized glass' inherent life-affirming qualities. Soft, flowing edges at the bases of these sculptures add to the sense of impermanence; electroplated copper helps to ground the figures, enhancing their presence. Clayton states: “The inspiration for this new body of work is a true love of the life inherent in glass itself. To create a face in glass is a self-evident evocation of the material's life quality. Creating abstracted forms in glass that become believable as life is what is truly inspiring. This is what continues my quest to experiment and explore glass and its capabilities as an art form.” Clayton started working with glass 35 years ago as a student in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She began as most glass artists do, by being introduced to a blow pipe and a furnace of molten glass. Her work prior to finding glass was primarily drawing and printmaking, with an emphasis on representing the human form. She earned her associates in fine arts degree at Bucks County Community College. Wanting to continue her education in glass, Clayton chose Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, where the program taught by Henry Halem had produced some of the most successful glass artists working at the time. After two years, she moved to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, where she graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor of fine arts degree in art history in 2002. While attending the University of Illinois, Clayton started her own glass studio with her husband, Keith Clayton. After 10 years in Illinois, in 1995 the couple discovered beautiful Door County, Wisconsin, where they moved with their three children. The studio was known for its pate de verre technique and electroplated copper vessels – a successful source of inspiration to her for over 20 years. Today, D.C. Studios LLC is designed to educate others in the ancient and rewarding process of pate de verre. Clayton has taught classes at the Corning Museum of Glass, New York; The Cleveland Institute of Art; and Duncan McClellan Glass Project, St. Petersburg, Florida. Her work can be seen in public and private collections around the world. This year's exhibitions included a solo exhibition, Surging Forward, at Duncan McClellan Gallery, St. Petersburg, Florida; Glass Coast Weekend, Habatat Fine Art, Sarasota, Florida; and Art Palm Beach, Mattsen Fine Art, Palm Beach, Florida. Artist awards include the 2019 Collectors Choice, 47th Annual International Glass Invitational, Habatat Galleries, Royal Oak, Michigan; SAC Award, Professional Dimensions Group, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Most Unique Interpretation of a Vessel, Habatat Galleries, Boca Raton, Florida. Says Clayton: “I love the versatility and freshness of glass as an artistic medium. The potential for expression in contemporary glass is limitless.”

After completion, they went on to get our associates degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management from Bucks County Community College. The rest was taught in the kitchen. They both truly became deeply interested in the farm-to-table world when holding chef de partie positions at The Mainland Inn. Yes, they have worked in a lot of the same restaurants! They did full animal butchery, gardening, growing under lights, tapping maple trees for syrup, raising bees and spinning the honey, making our own hot sauces & vinegars, foraging for garnish and such. They were in our own little heaven of a restaurant. When volunteering at Quarry Hill Farm, Stephen was told about the WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) program. A pitch that said you could travel for free, as long as you offer your work to the farmers in exchange for housing and meals. Well, five years later, the time was just right and they spent 2 months on Flying Pond Farm in Vienna, Maine in the summer of 2020. Thats where this whole idea became just a distant reality. After countless conversations with the farmer and his family (Harold and the Grams), we had somewhat of a plan of attack for when we returned home to start cooking these private events. After a little bit of revising, they had our vision!"

His column brings a sorely needed left/progressive voice to the pages of the papers that serve one of the most hotly contested Congressional districts in the state: PA-1.  To give you a window into Cyril’s background, let me simply paraphrase from his introductory column for the Courier Times. Cyril is a son of Bucks County. He grew up in Holland, went to St. Bede Elementary School, graduated from Council Rock High School, and went to Bucks County Community College where he edited the student newspaper. He finished college on the West Coast and just kept going after that. His writing, activism, and teaching has taken him all over the country — and the world. He’s organized anti-Iraq war protests in upstate New York, knocked on doors in Bucks County for former Democratic Congressman Patrick Murphy, and campaigned against free trade deals like the FTAA and CAFTA in Florida. He’s also worked as a human rights observer and accompanier in Ecuador monitoring a violent mining conflict, participated in human rights and solidarity delegations in Central America, and taught at an international school in the Kurdish region of Iraq. His writing has also appeared in progressive publications such as Truthout, Upside Down World, The Indypendent, Toward Freedom and Common Dreams. Cyril certainly wasted no time jumping into the political fray. On March 24, Cyril turned his lens to an on-going issue in the Pennridge School district - something you have heard me talk about in the past. His article, “Turning Point USA a Trojan horse of right-wing extremism for Pennridge students?,” focuses on a growing concern by local parents and students about the far-right group - Turning Point USA - gaining access to the halls of the high school. Turning Point USA has been flagged by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center for their documented cases of racism, bigotry, and white nationalism. He also raises questions about the behavior of some members of the Pennridge School Board who have fanned the flames of extremism. I am hoping this is the first of many occasions to have Cyril join us here on Out d’ Coup. On March 11, 2021, I hosted a Zoom to commemorate the passage of Newtown Township's LOVE is LOVE Resolution. The primary goal of this meeting was to discuss ideas on raising awareness of discrimination against and bullying of the LGBTQ+ minority youth in our community. Participants also discussed building ally ship to combat all forms of discrimination. Several activists, elected officials and students were guest speakers. One speaker was Kevin Antoine, who is the Chief Diversity Equity Inclusion Officer at Bucks County Community College, and the Chair of Newtown Township’s Human Relations Commission. In this 10-minute audio clip from the meeting, Mr. Antoine talks about the Equality Act that was recently passed by the U S House of Representatives. He explains why this Act is necessary to amend all previous federal civil rights laws. The Act is monumental because, if passed by the Senate, the rights of LGBTQ citizens would be protected by these laws, which currently do not offer such protection.

#10 - Jess Walcott - Brain Myths

Insight at Work with Ken Blackwell

IN THIS EPISODE: Today were going to discuss one of my favorite topics which is neuroscience and the study of the brain!  About 20 years ago I was introduced to neuroscience through the lens of how it applied to coaching, training and leadership development. This understanding of neuroscience instantly gave me a context for why a particular development approach worked well and why another didn’t. I found that when the approach sync’d with how the brain works it was successful, when it ran counter it almost always failed. It changed the way I trained and coached. And ever since, I’m always on the lookout to increase my knowledge and understanding of neuroscience.  Needless to say, I was really intrigued when I heard a friend use the phrase “brain myths” during a conversation. Ooh, tell me more!  So let me step back a bit for a minute and tell you about my friend. Jess Walcott is an assistant professor at Bucks County Community College where she teaches neuroscience and biology. Her undergraduate work at Bryn Mawr College was in chemistry and psychology but she then went on to complete a Ph.D. in neuropharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, Jess began a career as a medical writer working on regulatory submissions for new drugs and writing publications in scientific journals which she found more gratifying that running her own experiments. On a lark, she began teaching biology at Bucks and realized this was WAY more engaging than sitting at a computer analyzing patient data. These days her focus is completely on teaching where she concentrates on boosting scientific literacy and getting messy doing real experiments.  Back to brain myths.   As as a fun and  interesting way of pulling together the learning for her students at the end of the semester, Jess challenges them to identify a myth about the brain and then explain why it’s not true. There are many beliefs about the brain that we commonly believe are true, when in fact they’re not. What are we talking about here? You know things like there are left-brained and right-brained people. That the brain works like a computer. Another one is very common is the belief that we only use 10% of our brains. Of course a favorite of mine, and apparently of Jess’ students is the myth that drinking alcohol can kill brain cells.  Jess and I sat down to discuss these brain myths and others and to get into some of the science that underlies these fallacies and if there are parts of them that might in fact be a little bit true. ABOUT OUR GUEST: Jess is an adjunct professor at Bucks County Community College where she gets to learn along with her students in neuroscience and biology. Although she majored in chemistry and psychology for her undergraduate work at Bryn Mawr College, she studied neurodegeneration in an inherited form of muscular atrophy to complete her Ph.D. in neuropharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania. Outside of the classroom, Jess serves on the board of directors for a residential summer camp and volunteers at an organic farm. Jess also has two boys who provide her with countless opportunities to marvel at the wonders of the developing brain. Our goal with this interview was to bridge the gap between the black woman and the privileged white woman and discuss how can we work together to decrease racism and build healthy relationships across communities and between individuals, personally and professionally? Vulnerability June's Thoughts Acknowledging that I don't know everything.   There's much left for me to learn.  Even as a black woman, there is much left for me to learn about relationships and inclusion that's left for me to learn.  In the state of vulnerability, it's about being patient, trusting that I can learn, reaching out, asking questions and having conversations.  And sometimes, getting feedback about something that I did as a leader and not taking it as a personal attack upon myself for the sake of being vulnerable.   Being vulnerable allows us to learn things that we don't know.   Learning is positive and what we're in taught in the moment is valuable. Right now, in our society, we are at a vulnerable state. Tracy's Thoughts When doing the racism evaluation at Bucks County Community College, Tracy received results that surprised her.  She didn't think she had any racists tendencies, but she wasn't as tolerant as she thought she was.  One thing she learned was that saying “I don't see color” actually takes away from a black person's identity.  Not having bad intentions, Tracy felt like since she and her black colleagues worked together, and they were friends they were all the same.    Tracy had never thought about the color of her skin being an advantage.  She hadn't never thought of back women she went to school with were any different than her. Timing God has a knack with timing.   The COVID pandemic has forced us to face the issue of racism and really learn and be educated.   Learning is more powerful than a training on racism that you have to do.   Education is more sustainable than trainings so if we can work together to educate others on racism, we will have a better chance of bridging the gap for good. White Privilege and Racism Being privileged is not about money.  It's about access.   The important thing is to recognize privilege and not pretend it isn't there. Both Tracy and Robyn admit they were ignorant as to what white privilege is. Neither one of them associate with racism, but they also didn't recognize white privilege. June points out the difference between her upbringing in an impoverished area with little resources.   College was a dream, not a reality.   Minimum wage was considered success.   It took being outstanding in order to make it out of the neighborhood and go to universities.  There is much more pressure for the impoverished black people who have to do ten times the amount of work to be able to get to college. Leadership How can we as female leaders change the landscape of racism? Take the entrepreneurial mindset of risk taking and channel that energy into conversations about racism like the one we have on the podcast. It would be easier to keep quiet instead of getting uncomfortable, but if we are going to channel the entrepreneurial mindset, we have to bring it into conversations.  That is the only way any measurable change is going to happen.    Female entrepreneurs are the people who can do this because we have the support of other women who are willing to come together and work with each other.  Bring the spirit that drove us into entrepreneurship is what is going to do it. We must be willing to take the risk and be supportive when other women are taking the risk and let the uncomfortable conversations happen. Being a Leader Comes from Within Being a leader of ourselves must happen first.  Open the channels to improve and build relationships.  It must start with the individual.   We must take the action to improve ourselves first before we can lead others.    Take the time to reach out, ask questions and seek resources to education ourselves and then use our knowledge to lead. Assumptions We can assume that others are in the same situation we are in.  Once we focus on our-selves we can realize that there are differences and accept the things we don't know. Accountability We need to have accountability partners to ensure that we are taking action and not only listening but taking the necessary action.    As women we need to hold each other accountable for taking action.   But also, if we do something or say something in accordance with what I'm saying about mutuality and inclusion and decreasing bias, then also call each other out on that. Micro-aggressions of Racism Behaviors or things done or said that are offensive but not directly done or said towards someone.    Doesn't have to be directed at you but will offend you. Being aware of what we say and do is critical to avoid committing microaggressions. Humanity We should live with humanity as a core value.  Human decency may not be measurable, but we can certainly hold each other accountable for human decency. Everyone commits microaggressions, not just white people.   But do we have the decency, once called on it, to do better. Without human decency, all of the training on racism, all of the speakers and education on racism, will not do any good…it has to happen internally with each and every one of us. January 10, 2018 I've been looking forward to this interview for a long-time, one of the most inspiring teachers I ever had, drumset player and percussionist extraordinaire Mr. Ray Deeley!  I was very fortunate to take private drumset and percussion lessons with Ray while a high school student ('85-'89).  Ray taught at numerous Catholic high schools through-out the Philadelphia area, and coincidentally one of his students at another school was Heather High, who I would later meet in the percussion ensemble at West Chester University, which eventually led to our marriage, four great children and a wonderful life. After attending Mastbaum Vocational High School in Philadelphia with classmates the likes of Lee Morgan, Ray Deeley received a full scholarship to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music, studying with Fred Hinger and graduating in 1955. After graduation he worked as a first-call drumset player and percussionist touring the world with A-List musicians and entertainers, including Vic Damon, Bobby Rydell, Chubby Checker, Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Liberace, Milton Berle, Don Rickles and Julie Andrews, just to name a few. He also traveled with the Dick Clark American Bandstand tours to Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Hong Kong, performed on The Ed Sullivan Show, worked as a studio musician at Cameo-Parkway Records, and later taught drums and percussion for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, Bucks County Community College and Immaculata University. Today Ray exercises daily, continues studying and practicing drums and percussion and performs for various musical artists throughout Philadelphia and South Jersey.
