Stress can get in the way of our communication with others. To manage our stress, psychologist Jenny Taitz says, we first need to adjust the conversations that we have with ourselves.Taitz is an assistant clinical professor in psychiatry at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the author of several books, including Stress Resets: How to Soothe Your Body and Mind in Minutes. According to her, much of the stress we experience is self-created through negative thought patterns and harsh self-criticism. “We're doing this to ourselves all the time,” she says. But as we become aware of these unhelpful mental loops, Taitz' “resets” can help us disrupt them and reframe self-talk in more productive waysIn addition to changing our self-talk, Taitz offers tools for refreshing our communication with others. In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, she and host Matt Abrahams explore her G.I.V.E. framework — how being gentle, interested, validating, and easy-mannered equips us for more positive conversations with ourselves and othersEpisode Reference Links:Jenny Taitz: Website Jenny's Book: Website Communicator Jenny admires: Sharon Salzberg Ep.69 Feeling Nervous? Key lessons on reinvention from our conversation:The worst moment in your life, can also be your best: You can use devastating times to build necessary momentum for change  to create opportunities. Adversity can lead to new paths and self-discovery.Experimentation over comfort: If you never try, you will never know what works for you. The key for high-performers lies in setting realistic expectations,  and embracing self-love unconditionally amid imperfection.Confidence despite fear of failure: Your people-pleasing tendencies push you towards perfectionism and hinder you from trying. True confidence lies in owning your uniqueness, celebrating small wins, turn comparison into motivation, and giving yourself grace when you fail. External validation wasn't sustainable to begin with.Authentic is strong:  Being a successful content creator or a successful model and actor in the competitive market of LA requires standing out. You can't stand out if you're a carbon copy of everyone else and trying to fit in. Dare to be different.Happiness is on the Other Side of Fear of Failure: Facing your fears is like finding the keys to doors that lead you into  rooms you never thought existed. # 171: How To Be More Confident In Your Career Change Choices

The Career Change Maker Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 28, 2022 16:02

In today's episode of the ‘Career Change Maker' podcast, I talk on the topic ‘How to Be More Confident in Your Career Change Choices'. I want to dive into how you can confidently take career change decisions in a way that's going to keep you moving forward rather than staying stuck. The reason why I am discussing this topic is that often I see people waiting until they have any idea about what it is that they want to do before they take any action.  Episode Highlights·       04:10 - The importance of recognizing the correction process does not begin with identifying what you want to do next because before you even get to that point, you need to know why this is what you want to go for.·       06:25 - It's not about what should I do because should is the issue, should is probably the thing that got you to where you are now feeling like I'm just showing up every day doing a job that I don't want to do.·       08:10 - If you're someone who's saying I've been trying to figure this out for ages, I've been going around in circles, just asking myself, what else should I do? What we start with is, what do I need for me to feel happy and fulfilled in the role.·       10:37 - If you don't feel confident enough then you need to ask yourself, how am I coming up with the answers or the potential options.·       12:20 - What you need to be able to do is to position yourself in a way that attracts the type of opportunities that you want going forward. But if you're not confident in yourself, then it's difficult to position yourself correctly in the marketplace. What you will learn:·       Most of the thoughts that you think on a day-to-day basis are repeated. The statistic is that 90% of anything today is repeated for both yesterday, and so the things that you are consistently thinking about and the way that you're consistently approaching things is the pace at which you're trying to decide on doing something different.·       It is difficult to say this is the type of role which is right for me, because when you get to a certain point or phase in your career after you've gone through the first phase of settling into your professional role and climbing the ranks a little bit, then you want that role. Also, if you're not taking the time to check in with yourself, then it's likely it's going to be hard for you to identify what the right type of role is.·       In my Group Coaching Program, when I work with my clients, I talk a lot about making data-driven decisions. They don't make decisions on a whim, instead, they take an approach where they ensure that they're doing all that they can and collect enough data so that they can make an informed decision about the steps that they're going to take to move them forward.Other episodes you may also enjoy:Episode 166: Want To Make More Impact And Have More Satisfaction In Your Career? Do This...Episode 168: The One Thing You Need To Make A Successful Career ChangeTHIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMThis episode was brought to you by my signature program, the Career Change Maker Program. If you are looking for support with changing career direction, book a suitability call >>

Becca Ribbing is the author of The Clarity Journal and has been a coach for over a decade. She's on a mission to help people break out of the cycles of uncertainty and struggle that hold them back. She helps women going back forth and with the big, seemingly endless question of what to do next so they can stop going around in circles and finally figure out what they truly want and create the clarity and momentum they crave.   So many people find themselves stuck and unsure of their direction. Using journaling prompts and helping people become more honest with themselves. She moves her readers forward gently and empowers them to embrace their strengths while letting go of any negative self-talk that has held them back in the past. She's been on many podcasts, including “What to Read Next” and “Say Yes.”   Questions   Could you share with our audience a little bit about your journey? How did you get to where you are today? We have a lot of listeners who are business owners or managers in businesses, females, males, how would this book really help them? Could you share with us just how this all comes together? What are maybe one or two things that you would recommend that they could employ in order to just be more confident or have a greater conviction or assertion in whatever they're thinking of doing or not doubting themselves or be so fearful? Could you share with us what's the one online resource, tool, website or app that you absolutely cannot live without in your business? Could you also share with our audience, maybe one or two books that you've read, could be books that you read a very long time ago, or even one that you've read recently, but it really has had a great impact on you. What's the one thing that's going on in your life right now that you're really excited about, either something you're working on to develop yourself or your people? Where can listeners find you online? Do you have a quote or saying that during times of adversity or challenge you'll tend to revert to this quote or saying, it kind of helps to get you back on track or get you refocused if for any reason you get derailed?   Highlights   Becca's Journey   Becca shared that about 3 years ago, she was going back and forth about her next career move, she had just had her second son and she had been a coach for a while. And she had also been running a mindfulness website that she had to let go when her son was born, her son had a bunch of medical issues, none of them were huge, but they all were very time consuming.   And so, about 3 years ago, she was going back and forth with a friend of hers about what path she wanted to take next. And it was so funny, because she stopped her and finally she said, “Hey, Becca, you are a coach, you've been a coach for a long time, what would you tell your clients in this situation?” And she stopped, she was like, “Oh, what would I tell myself?” And she got off that call and she wrote down all of the questions she asks her clients to help them move forward.   And as she was writing these questions down and asking them of herself, she started getting more and more and more clear. And the thing that came up for her is that she really needed to get back into writing, even though it was difficult with the kids, writing was really truly what she loved doing. And so, this ended up becoming her first writing project. It was just so powerful to have the questions asked that she wanted to make sure they got out to the world.   Your Book, The Clarity Journal - Find the Clarity and Momentum You've Been Searching For! – How This Book Can Help Business Owner or Managers in Business   Me: So, your book, as we mentioned prior to the actual recording starting is entitled, The Clarity Journal - Find the Clarity and Momentum You've Been Searching For! So tell us, we have a lot of listeners who are business owners or managers in businesses, females, males, how would this book really help them? Because I know, for example, there are people who are in their 20s and their 30s, sometimes even in their 40s, who still have not figured out if what they're doing is what they really want to do. And so, where do you start? Do you start just by having a conversation with yourself in your head? Or do you find journaling helps more? And is there a scientific proof that supports that? Could you share with us just how this all comes together?   Becca shared that the main thing, is to start getting yourself out of the question and moving towards an answer. So, she finds a lot of times when someone comes to her and is really stuck, they are just constantly asking the same question over and over again, “What do I do next?” Or “What is my passion?” And they really just get so fixated on the lack of what they don't know, that they have a really hard time branching out from there.   And so, she would say she loves journaling, you can also hire a coach. She thinks that a lot of us get stuck and we don't even realize it though. We get stuck in this single train of thought where we're looping back over and over. And so, she would say that the very first step in her mind is recognizing when you are stuck, being mindful about being stuck and recognizing that you are not going to be able to really move yourself through it, doing what you've been doing up to date.   So, she believes journaling helps a lot, she thinks that hiring a coach helps a lot and some of your listeners may not be stuck about what they want to do, so much as like stuck about exactly how they want to do it, or exactly what the career path should look like for them.   And she runs into this a lot with entrepreneurs, especially very small business entrepreneurs, where they really aren't as clear as they think they are about their mission and what they are doing, and so it just muddies the water so much because every time they start something new, every time they go to do a blog post, or every time they start working on a new product, because they are not clear, they have a really hard time diving into it without an awful lot of second guessing at the very beginning.   And so, she doesn't really have scientific proof that journaling works, she can't off the top of her head think of a study and now after she gets off of this call, she's going to go look and see what scientific studies there are for journaling. But she thinks the real trick of all of this is to just be honest with yourself about where you are.   Because we also oftentimes want to push away that indecision, push away the fear; push away whatever it is that's causing us discomfort. And so, if we don't actually shine a light on it, if we don't really look at it deeply, then we're going to be stuck in that same cycle and she thinks that really comes clear when she's talking to her clients that are managers and are in this realm, because they aren't clear and they're muddying the waters for their employees. But also, a lot of times, they're not clear about what they want in terms of employees.   She runs into a lot where someone's been dealing with a bad employee for a very long time, and speaking of scientific studies, there is a really interesting study a couple of years ago, the statistic she's going to be a little bit off on because she can't remember what exactly it was. But basically, if a team had a complainer on it, that the entire team's productivity went down by something like 30%. Isn't that shocking? And so, really getting clear about what you want your management style to be, really getting clear about what it is that you need to be successful can also be extremely powerful.   Recommendations Persons Can Employ In Order to Be More Confident   Me: So, persons who suffer from like low self esteem, or their confidence is not as high as another person, what are maybe one or two things that you would recommend that they could employ in order to just be more confident or have a greater conviction or assertion in whatever they're thinking of doing or not doubting themselves or be so fearful?   Becca stated that that's a great question. She feels like a lot of times people don't really recognize their strengths. When we have a strength, it usually comes really easily to us and so we discount its value, because it's not hard.   And she finds especially people with low self confidence, they haven't really embraced the strength that makes them really unique and valuable, and so they're constantly using things that are actually their weakness at work.   And so, she would say that her first priority when she gets a new client is actually to help people see their own strengths because if you can't see it, then you're not going to try to design your life and your job around using your strengths.   When we're in school, all of our teachers and our parents usually do this thing, if we get a report card and we have an A in writing and a C in math, they don't focus on how great the A in writing is and what they could do with their life with the A in writing. What they do is they focus on that C in math, “Oh, you need to work harder; you need to work harder, like what is going wrong that you don't understand this?” And there's a lot of blame, and the kid feels bad.   And so, we have been trained as kids to focus on our weakness, to focus on fixing our weakness, to focus on what our weaknesses are and that she feels like really does not help you in the real world, because in the real world, the more you can bring in your strengths into work, the better off you will be.   So, if you were having low self esteem right now, you were actually trying to do this, one of the things that she would do is actually ask, if you have a really close friend who's a co-worker or even just your family or friends, the ones that are really positive and supportive, when you ask them, “Hey, what do you see my strengths as being?” really listen to what they say and try very hard not to discount it. Don't tell yourself, “Oh, well, everyone has that,” because they don't, not everyone has that strength. And the people that don't have that strength, that kind of means that it's a weakness of theirs, it's okay to value it even though it comes easy to you.   Me: It's so interesting that you brought that up that they focus on the negative it's so true. Even as a parent myself, I have to kind of retrain myself as an individual in terms of focusing where my daughter is concerned. I remember growing up, ever report that I got from I was in kindergarten come all the way up to university said, “Yanique is our great student, but she just talks too much.” I love to talk to this day, clearly. That's why I have a podcast and interview people. And that's why I'm a Customer Service Trainer and my voice is now how I express myself in so many different areas, like different platforms, and to contact and connect with people. So, I think you are right, you should focus on what your strengths are, and don't negate the fact that you're good at something, even if you're not so good at something else, because we all have strengths and some of them won't be similar. So, we all for example, can't be a lawyer or a doctor.   And then that's the next thing too Becca, I find that traditionally, especially here in Jamaica, we're not training our kids to do careers that are not the normal careers, because I'm sure that there are careers that have emerged since the pandemic, that if we were to ask somebody if they would go into that profession 5/10 years ago, they wouldn't, they would have been like, “No, that's probably never going to exist.” But so much has forced people to just do different things differently and technology has increased so much that professions that didn't exist, all of a sudden, because of the pandemic, and we're all forced into the digital so quickly, it just has really emerged. What are your thoughts on that?   Becca stated that having a career now versus say in 1950, just requires so much being willing to be flexible. And she thinks that one of the things that goes along with that is recognizing your strengths and weaknesses, because you will make better shifts if you can really analyze what it is you want to be using within yourself.   And she has to say, she laughed as Yanique was telling the story about everyone saying that you talk too much, because of course, it's actually a beautiful strength, it's just not a strength if they want you to sit still at school for 6 hours a day. She thinks that something that's been really hard for her is also what Yanique was talking about with the kids, because you want them to be persistent, you want them to try their best and you want them to really flourish. And the way that they're going to flourish is to like find their joys, find their strengths.   And so, when she's working with people about, back to the original question about how do you do this going forward, the thing that she has noticed the most, especially with older clients, and we will all eventually be older is that they hit a certain age and they start not wanting to learn new things. And she should back preface for anyone who is like 50 or 60, 70 even, not everyone does this, but she does notice a big trend with older people where they're not going to learn the next app, they're not going to learn the new computer programme and they fall off a bandwagon at some point where they're not going to do anything new because it's not useful to them, it's too complicated, they just don't have the brain space.   And she would say that when you do that, you end up limiting yourself because as you start to insulate yourself from the new technology changes, you are inherently going to limit your potential 5 years from now because you didn't keep up with the times.   And she thinks that there's a lot to be said for that that happens a lot in business too where you have a slightly older manager and what's working right now is working and so we don't have the bandwidth as a company, especially as a small company to add something new. And then all of a sudden, what you have been doing has been working, and it might work for another year or two but you're going to end up running into a brick wall if you haven't been consistently changing with the times.   Me: So, really being adaptable and being flexible, and just being open to learning new things regardless of your age. And you are right, I do notice it myself but I don't think it's everybody. But I do believe that the older persons tend to be a little bit less willing to embrace something that they're not familiar with, or they feel like it's just out of their comfort zone. I remember my dad died about 3 years ago, and he was a business owner for many years. And of course, just to make deposits at the bank for his business or anything, he would still physically drive to the bank and have to stand up in front of a physical person even though the technology exists for online banking, or even just going to an ATM and using a debit card, he never had a debit card. If he needed cash from his account, he would go to the bank physically and stand in front of someone because that's what he was so accustomed to and it's just amazing. Even when you said to him, “It's so much easier, Daddy, you could try it this way.” It was just not something that he was willing to embrace. And then the flipside is I've met persons his age, and they're fully with technology, they probably use social media way more than me, I guess they have more time on their hands. And they really and truly embrace it. So I guess it depends on their headspace on how open they are.   Becca stated that also she's actually run into it with younger people, too. She once had a client who was 24, who was a graphic designer who hated Adobe. And she was just like, you're fighting a losing battle, you're going to have to use Adobe in any job you have, you're a graphic designer. So, she doesn't want to stereotype too much but as we get older, it becomes easier to get into the status quo. And it's almost always going to hold you back.   App, Website or Tool that Becca Absolutely Can't Live Without in Her Business   When asked about an online resource that she cannot live without, Becca shared that she has been really loving this programme called Ommwriter. And it is this very streamlined writing software that has like this beautiful background and it has music that pipes in that flows, that's very flowy music and it also sounds like a keyboard, like a really nice old fashioned keyboard.   And she has found that when she's using it, her writing speeds up, she probably writes about twice as fast as she normally do because something about it just helps her flow through and write really fast. The picture on it naturally draws your eyes to the bottom and she just feels like the whole UI is so great.   It's not great for editing so she usually copy and paste whatever she's writing into a Word document to actually do the like the spell-check and the grammar check. But it is amazing. She thinks a lot of people have this experience, even if they are not writers, where they have to write an about page or a page for new sales for a new product or just even a really long and complicated email where just even getting it out is hard. And so, she knows a lot of people have actually switched back to pen and paper because of that. So she would say if you ever have a hard time or you're writing long length things and you find yourself getting stuck a lot, then definitely download it, it's only $7 or $8. Her new favorite toy.   Books That Have Had the Greatest Impact on Becca   When asked about books that have had a great impact, Becca shared that she is loving Burnout. It's called Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily Nagoski PhD. And it really speaks, she thinks, mostly to women but it is all about why we get overwhelmed, and why we get stressed out and frazzled, and very practical little steps you can take to help combat that. And she thinks that anyone listening to this, especially anyone with kids, or a really intense job can relate to feeling burnt out, and feeling stressed. And so, if you are in that space right now, she highly recommends the book.    What Becca is Really Excited About Now!   Becca shared that she's working on her next book. So, she just got started on writing the next book, her kids just went back to school and it's been a little hard in the States, I assume in many other places where people are listening with COVID. So, the kids have been with her for a very long time.   Me: And what state are you in?   Becca shared that she is in Washington State, she's in Seattle. And so, she's working on her next book. And the working title right now is called Mindful Procrastination.   Me: When are you expecting and is that book going to be similar to The Clarity Journal, like a working book? Or is it more of a reading book?   Becca stated that it's a book, book, and she's hoping that it'll be out within the next year. But this will be her first book, book so she's cautiously optimistic that it will take her about a year once everything is said and done and the editing process is all finished.   Where Can We Find Becca Online   Website – www.beccaribbing.com Twitter - @beccaribbing Instagram - @beccaribbing   Quote or Saying that During Times of Adversity Becca Uses   When asked about a quote or saying that she tends to revert to, Becca shared, “Be here now.” Very often times when she's stressed out, it's because she's thinking of 100 things and it helps really centre her on the one thing she needs to do right now. Whether that is family or work, it just helps clear out the clutter because yes, we all have 100 things on our to-do list, but you can only do one of them at a time.   Me: Very true. You really can only focus on one thing at a time. And I think many years ago, I read an article that said that it's not humanly possible for you to be doing two things at the same time and be doing both of them at 100%. So, it's like driving and talking on the phone or driving and eating, something is going to not be done at its highest level of efficiency because it's just humanly impossible for you to do both of them at 100% capacity.   Please connect with us on Twitter @navigatingcx and also join our Private Facebook Community – Navigating the Customer Experience and listen to our FB Lives weekly with a new guest   Grab the Freebie on Our Website – TOP 10 Online Business Resources for Small Business Owners   Links   The Clarity Journal – Find the Clarity and Momentum You've Been Looking For! “How to Revive Your Self Trust” provides practical ideas to help you believe in yourself again, restore your self trust and start believing in your decisions, and your way of life. Here, you also find answers to the following questions: - What is self trust and how it first comes about? - What makes us lose or not have enough self trust? - What can we do to revive, restore, or reaffirm our self trust?Self trust reflects our ability to trust what we feel, think, decide, or do in life without any doubt or desire for external validation. Unfortunately, we are not born with self trust and must develop it in the course of our life. When we have a low level of self trust, all of our decisions are mixed with doubt and everything we do is being observed by our inner critics, who are aware of this doubt and view it as a sign of weakness or incompetence. But when we trust yourself, doubt has little room in our decisions or actions. Our inner critics are relaxed and our occasional failure or mistakes in life are no longer seen as reflections of who we are, but rather as experiences that make us grow and become wiser, as they are meant to be.       Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based, psychospiritual model with applications in psychology and coaching. Be confident in your authenticity, even when life and other people try to push you around or tell you to be someone you're not. A couple of years ago, I was asked to write an article for a very professional publication. Their readers are intellectuals, academics, and probably more conservative and elite. So, you can imagine my surprise that they wanted me-someone who prefers to be more casual and down to earth-to write an article for them about starting a business. I submitted the article and was a little surprised when they came back with feedback that the tone of my writing was "too chatty." I was like, Really? You're surprised by that? Have you not heard me speak, read my blogs, or listened to one of my podcasts? Because that tone is actually my entire brand! I remember thinking, If you don't want chatty, then you probably don't want me. Related: Ep 86: Be More Confident by Believing in Yourself I felt like this publication wanted me to be someone I wasn't. They wanted me to write like an academic with big fancy words, and that's just not how I write, talk or connect with people. Thankfully, we ended up getting to a good place where they felt like the article met their standards and could be published while staying true to my voice. But it was really eye-opening for me to realize how important it is to not only be authentic, but to be confident in that authenticity, even when life and other people try to push you around or tell you to be someone you're not. That's why today I want to walk you through how to be authentic in your daily life. This is going to help you not only be authentic, but also remain authentic no matter who tries to push you around. Let's jump right in . . . How to Be Authentic 1. Be vulnerable. Let me go ahead and start by saying this is not my idea. Brené Brown introduced this idea of vulnerability years ago with her book Daring Greatly and her TED Talk "The Power of Vulnerability." It's a brilliant concept that says, as we step out in vulnerability-as we open ourselves up, not just to pain but also to love-we're able to have deeper connections and a deeper sense of confidence in who we really are. As an Enneagram eight, vulnerability is really hard for me. So often I want to put up a tough exterior like I've got it all together. But the truth this: Authenticity is about trueness, and you can't live your truest self without being vulnerable. If you're always holding back a piece of yourself or hiding behind a tough exterior, how can you become who God created you to be? That's why vulnerability is so important when it comes to being authentic. 2. Tell the truth. There are two extremes when it comes to telling the truth: There are those who never share the truth, and those who refuse to accept the truth. Those who never want to share the truth lack the ability to be vulnerable. They want to act like everything is always great, so when someone asks how they're doing-even if they're going through a hard time or their kids are driving them crazy-their response is always, "Oh, I'm fine. I'm doing great." The other extreme are those who downplay or don't acknowledge when things are going well in their lives. You know, this person: You give them a compliment about a beautiful...

They want to act like everything is always great, so when someone asks how they’re doing—even if they’re going through a hard time or their kids are driving them crazy—their response is always, “Oh, I’m fine. I'm doing great.” The other extreme are those who downplay or don’t acknowledge when things are going well in their lives. You know, this person: You give them a compliment about a beautiful meal, a flattering dress, or the way they lead the charge on a big project at work, and they dismiss it or downplay it. They say something like, “Oh, this old thing?” or “It was really a team effort. I didn’t do much.” Related: Ep 83: Develop Self-Awareness and Turn Your Weaknesses Into Strengths When you dismiss compliments, you're not only dismissing your own sense of confidence in that moment, but you're also dismissing the truth. So, instead of always rejecting the kind things people say about you, resist the urge to say anything other than thank you. To live a more authentic life, tell the truth—when things aren’t going well and when they are. 3. Know your values. So often we identify with the roles we play, like wife, mom, sister, friend, leader, etc. And what's interesting is, if we're not careful, we’ll always operate from the surface level of our roles. We’ll fulfill tasks for the people in our lives while missing the deeper layer of what our mind and our heart truly desires and values. We say things like: “I’d love to work out, but I don't have time to. I value playing with my kids outside, but by the time I get home from work, I don't have any energy left. I’d love to go on a vacation with my husband, but we haven't even been on a date in months.” How can you say you truly value those things when you don’t actually do them? When you don't spend your life and your time on things that are important to you, you'll live your life stressed, anxious and exhausted because there's an inconsistency between what you value and what your life actually reflects. So, a key to being authentic is to close that gap—to identify what’s important to you, and then actually do those things. 4. Love yourself. It's amazing how we—women especially—will spend our entire day, from the moment we wake up to the moment we go to sleep, beating ourselves up about how we look, how we dress, how we keep our house, how we parent our kids, how we fail at work, etc. It’s an all day, every day narrative in our head that is mean and exhausting. But you know what? You can't offer something you don't have, and you can't lead others where you are not. So, if you want to love people in your life, sister, you better love yourself first. I love how Brené Brown says, “Talk to yourself like you would to someone you love.” Here’s a really practical tip to help you do that: Go to your Bible! God has some amazing things to say about you. He says He delights over you with singing. That He knit you together in your mother's womb. That He would move heaven and earth for you. That he chose you and that he loves you. You are precious in his sight. Replace the lies in your head and heart with those truths. If you’ll practice these four things, you’ll be on your way to living a much more authentic life—one that is true to you and that you’re proud of. Being Authentic with Sarah Dubbeldam I'm so excited about my guest today, Sarah Dubbeldam! Sarah is the founder and creative director of Darling Media and Darling magazine, a publication that celebrates real women. I love this magazine so much. They have a beautiful quote on the back of their magazine that I believe illustrates what it means to live authentically. It says: “Darling is the art of being a woman. Darling magazine holds the modern mold of women up to the fire to evoke a discussion on femininity and reshape an authentic design. Darling is a catalyst for positive change; leading women to discover beauty apart from vanity, influence apart from manipulation, style apart from materialism, sweetness apart from passivity, and womanhood without degradation. Darling leads women to practice the arts of virtue, wit, modesty and wisdom, all while creating beauty and embodying love. Darling says women are not only interesting but original, not only good enough, but exceptional, not just here but here for a purpose.” On this episode, Sarah and I talk about: Why it’s so important to live according to your values What modesty actually means and what it looks like How living authentically leads to living confidently Encouragement: God Did Not Create You to Berate You A few months ago, I had an experience that absolutely rocked me to my core. My husband, Matt, and I were hanging out at our friend’s house for a cookout. The weather was amazing so we—the adults and the kids—were hanging out in the backyard. My husband watched the boys while I ate, and when I finished, I told him I’d take over watching the boys so he could go inside and get some food. Well, I went to throw my plate of food away, and the next thing I know, I see my husband running out of the back door to the front of the house. And as soon as I saw him dart past me, I knew what had happened: Conley, my son, had run off. I took off after my husband and saw Conley standing at the end of the driveway with his toes on the street as cars were flying by. Thank God we got him. Nothing happened. But him getting out of the backyard and near the street was my fault. I was supposed to be watching him. I cried the rest of the day and kept thinking, How could I be so stupid? What must my husband think of me? What must my friends think? Those thoughts went on and on as I beat myself up about the mistake I’d made. Now, I want to be clear: The mistake I made that day—taking my eyes off Conley—was not okay. But you know what else was not okay? How I lived in that shame for the rest of the day. Related: Ep 76: Practice Self-Care and Give Yourself Grace As I was praying throughout the day—praying and crying and praying and crying—I felt God say to me, “Christy, we’re a team. Conley is my son too, and I'm going to help you when you fall short. I'm going to be there. There's grace for you in your mistakes.” I was so incredibly thankful for that reminder. And today, I just want to remind you: When you have those kind of voices in your head—when you make a mistake or you slip up and you're just beating yourself up—I want you to stop and ask yourself a question: Is this what God says about me? Because I guarantee you, those voices are not from God because God did not create you to berate you. God will coach. He will correct. He will convict. He will help you grow, improve and mature. But He will not tear you down. He is a God who builds up. He is a God who gives grace. He is a God who shows up. And He is a God who loves His children. God doesn't just love Conley. God loves me—even in my flaws, my failures and my setbacks. I love how the Bible reminds us that God is love. First and foremost, God is loving. So, if the thoughts you're feeling or the words you're hearing in your mind aren’t loving, then they're not from God. At the end of the day, the most important identity you take on is that of a loved, chosen daughter of the King. Rest in that today. I hope this not only encourages you to appreciate someone that might be wired differently than you, but also gives you some practical tips to work better with them.

Several years ago, I met someone I’ve admired from afar for years. I was on the road for the spring Business Boutique event in 2016, and we had booked someone who I consider to be a mega-celebrity speaker: Christine Caine. I couldn’t believe I was going to meet her in person and share a stage with her. I would have been grateful simply for the privilege of shaking hands, taking pictures, and hanging out with her. It felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But it was even better than that. We became friends in real life. The following year, she even invited me to speak on her conference tour, Propel Women. Of course, I agreed. We traveled around the country and spoke at six different events. And this relationship has only continued to grow. She was one of the first people I texted when I found out I was having a baby girl. And she is someone who I continually lean on for mentorship and guidance. Christine is just one example of the many incredible people I’ve had the privilege of building relationships with through Business Boutique over the last five years. Not only have these connections benefited my personal life, but they’ve also helped my business as well. It’s true what they say: “It’s all about who you know.” The quality of your life is a direct reflection of the quality of your relationships. The same is true in business. The quality of your business is a direct reflection of the quality of your relationships. Every opportunity that you will ever have in your lifetime will come through people. So regardless of what type of business you’re in, you’re in the people business. Related: Building Business Relationships That’s why I want to help you with something that many people find intimidating: networking. I meet so many women who are terrified of it. They often feel like making new connections is only for outgoing personalities. But I don’t believe that to be true. So today, I want to bust three myths we believe about networking so you can stop believing these lies and take advantage of all it has to offer. Three Myths We Believe About Networking Myth #1: There’s only one way to do it. When you think about networking, you probably picture talking to strangers at a formal event and a lot of awkward interactions. It’s no wonder you want no part of it! But do you know what networking really is? Meeting people and making connections. That’s it. It’s really that simple. And you can build relationships with people anywhere and at any time. I’d be willing to bet you’re already doing this every single day. As women, we’re naturally relational and enjoy connecting with new people. It’s what we do. You don’t need to have a pitch or an agenda or be in a formal setting to meet someone new. Stop thinking about networking as anything more than making a new friend. Related: 4 Friends You Need for Your Business Myth #2: You have to be extroverted. Introverts might experience more anxiety when walking into a roomful of people, but they actually have the advantage. Why? Because introverts are gifted at connecting one-on-one and building deep, quality relationships. They may not want to work the room or be the life of the party, but they’re going to walk out of there with at least one real connection. Here’s a tip for you introverts: Start small. Scan the room and see if you can find just one person who looks inviting (bonus points if they’re also alone). Walk up to them and introduce yourself. I guarantee that anyone in that room who is standing by themselves will welcome a friendly face because they’re probably feeling exactly how you are. Keep in mind that this doesn’t have to only be in-person. You can make connections online. For introverts, it’s a great way to get out of your shell and get some practice under your belt. Myth #3: You’ll come off as self-seeking. We all have this fear that people will think we have an agenda or we’re going to take advantage of them when we’re networking. It’s the same reason we feel weird about selling. But there’s a tried and true way to get over this: Focus on what you can give, not on what you can get. Here’s what’s so beautiful about this idea: It will help you in business, marketing, speaking, life and networking. Basically, it will help you everywhere. I want you to approach everything in your life by focusing on what you can give. I guarantee the person on the other side of the conversation will feel the difference. Related: How to Sell Without Feeling Slimy When you walk into a trade show or event, don’t walk in there thinking, How can I get a business card or a new client or a referral? Instead, think about how you can provide solutions and real value. When you have that mindset, I’m willing to bet you’ll get more than you can imagine in return. Remember, people buy from those they know, like and trust. So just focus on the relationship. Business can happen later. Because, at the end of the day, networking is just a fancy word for making new friends who can play a role in building your dream and your business. So, of course, I’ve been thinking a lot about being a mom and the qualities I want my children to have. I often think, What do I want for my children? Who do I want them to be? What prayers should I pray for them? For as long as I can remember, there has been one particular quality that I have wanted above all others: Confidence. I have seen how it can be a game-changer in your life. When you’re self-assured, you’ll reach for bigger dreams and write scarier goals. You’ll ask for more and assume you’re capable of doing whatever it is you want to do. You’ll withstand peer pressure (even in adulthood), put yourself out there, and take more risks. Related: How to Be More Confident  Like networking, people tend to think confidence is just for extroverts and the social butterflies. It couldn’t be further from the truth. Confidence is a skill and freely available to anyone Fear, on the other hand, establishes limits in your life. Nothing will build your confidence like pushing beyond your comfort zone, trying something new, going after what you’re afraid of, and realizing you are capable of far more than you imagined. Friends, don’t stay stuck feeling like your fears will always rule you. Confidence is a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it becomes. Over time, it will become authentic. Don’t wait until you’re not scared to do the thing you want to do. Work on cultivating confidence in your own life and then go do it scared. 1:21 Three Myths We Believe About Networking 14:21 How to Make the Right Connections with Ken Coleman 50:55 Encouragement to Cultivate Confidence in Your Life Resources The Proximity Principle by Ken Coleman Ken Coleman's new book, The Proximity Principle: The Proven Strategy That Will Lead to the Career You Love, gives you a proven plan that will lead you to more opportunities than you’ve ever seen before. “If you don’t love yourself, how are you going to love someone else?”   The intention of TODAY’S episode is - How to Be My Blazing Self   Whoever you are and wherever you are in life, you deserve to be loved. In order to receive the love the universe has for you, you first have to be able to love yourself. This week on I HAVE TODAY with Diane Forster, we’re talking about giving yourself permission to fully be yourself. When you embrace confidence in who you are, you have the freedom and capacity to find fulfillment and joy in your life. This week’s guest Ashley Spedale is a makeup artist turned Personal Brand Coach. Her personal journey has empowered her ability to help entrepreneurs discover what sets them apart from others - their unique passions and gifts that are a recipe for wild success. Listen in to hear more about Ashley’s journey, and learn how you can choose TODAY to embrace confidence and allow the world to see the gift that you are.   “I was seeking love from outside, but I had to find it within. When you give yourself permission, your whole world changes. The answer is inside, you just have to pull it out of yourself.”   Three Rules to Become More Confident You’ve got to stop caring what people think.   There is nothing wrong with you. Everyday we are learning, evolving and expanding. Do your best to figure out what your unique gifts are.   “33% of people are going to love you. 33% aren’t going to like you, no matter what you do, and 33% won’t care either way. Focus on the first 33%!”   Each week, we end the episode with a mantra meditation. This is a powerful and transformative way to apply this week’s principles to your life today. There is no way to clear out self-limiting beliefs, without replacing them. Replace your limitations today with the power to choose. You have the power to choose happiness. Sit back, relax, listen, and watch you life begin to change before your eyes.   “You are unique. You are capable to do anything that you believe. Don’t worry about the how. Just start.”   Some Topics we talk about in this episode:   Introduction - 0:54 Ashley’s Journey - 5:02 Three Rules to Be More Confident - 16:12 How Ashley Lives the “I HAVE TODAY” Way - 25:27 Wrap-up and Takeaways - 30:00   How to get involved To learn more about Ashley, and the work she does with entrepreneurs, visit www.ashleyspendale.com, or tune into her podcast Brunch with the Universe. It's time to talk about learning from failure. I know. Learning from failure is no one's favorite subject. No one gets excited about failure, but y'all, failure is a reality in life and business! We might as well just learn from it! I have had a lot of failures in my life . . . and in Business Boutique . . . and in speaking. So I've gotten a lot of practice. And today, I'm going to help you answer the question, "How do I learn from my failure?" Three Ways to Learn From Failure 1. Adjust on the Fly When it's possible, adjust on the fly. A few years ago I was booked to speak at Catalyst, talking to women about life balance. Everything I wrote was directed at women and what we struggle with when it comes to life balance. I used stories that were relatable to women and I even pulled stories from the Bible, citing Scripture about women. On the day of the event, I stood at the back of the room and watched the room fill up with people, who were all men. Do you see the problem? I could have gone ahead and given the talk as if I were presenting to women. That would have been the safe route. Or I knew I could adjust on the fly to the failure. That's what I did. I had notes from a previous talk and just scrapped the slides! It was exactly the talk I was supposed to give, and they only heard it because I was willing to think on my feet. The lesson? Don't be afraid to think on your feet and make it up on the fly to save a misstep from becoming a complete failure! Related: How to Be More Confident 2. Deal With It If you make a mistake, drop the ball, or just fall flat on your face, deal with it. Back when I worked as the aquatic director at the YMCA, in the middle of a chaotic day, I made a big mistake. On the day of our mandatory annual aquatics safety training, my director called me to ask why my lifeguards were not in attendance. Luckily there were two options for sessions: 9 a.m. or 2 p.m. But I'd not only forgotten, I also hadn't told a single person they needed to be there. You know what I did? I dealt with it. I went speed walking down the hall to the executive director's office and opened the door. I looked her in the face and said, "I am sorry to bother you, but I need you to know that I have dropped a huge ball. I am taking care of it, but I just want you to know that I am aware of it and I am really sorry." I explained what I'd forgotten and gave her my plan to fix it. Thankfully, I got almost 100% of my staff to the 2 p.m. training. I failed but I did three things to face my failure head on. Own it. It's in our nature to hide, cover up, make excuses, and place blame. By owning it, you are doing the opposite of what most people choose, while demonstrating maturity, integrity and self-awareness. In the process, you're also building trust. Apologize for it. Apologizing shows you're coachable. It demonstrates humility instead of defensiveness, which makes others want to work with you more. Fix it. Doing your best to fix a mistake is proactive. People will respect your ability to try to repair a mishap when one happens. 3. Dust Yourself Off There's no magic lesson with this one. But here's the truth: You're going to have experiences you would never want to relive. There are going to be times you fail so badly it stays with you for a while. Many years ago I had a speaking engagement that I try to forget, and it haunts me to the this day. But you know what? It hasn't kept me from doing the thing I'm meant to do. I kept going. And you can too. Y'all, it's totally possible to learn from failure with these three strategies. If you can adjust on the fly, you might avoid it all together. If you can't avoid it, then deal with it. If you can't deal with it, just dust yourself off and keep going. But aren’t they all? Here’s a quick challenge to help you prioritize during this season! First of all, know that not all priorities are created equal. But when you have tons of responsibilities, you need to have priorities and determine what’s most important to you. You need to know what comes first and second and third—and fifteenth. That way, when two things compete for your attention, you can make a decision based on your priorities. When you know what your priorities are, decision-making becomes so much easier. So, determine what’s most important to you. It’s your life. You want to spend it on what’s most important to you! They’re your priorities, and it’s your time. Fitnesspreneur's Life

It’s funny how life works.    Just recently I was asked to give a presentation on how to build, maintain and sustain confidence, I’ll share with you some of the highlights of that process below.   Putting together that presentation got me thinking back to the first time I ever stepped on stage.    That guy, way back in 2010, knew nothing about confidence.    I can honestly say that I remember the feelings I had like it was yesterday because it was in front of five hundred people, my very first time, no easing onto things, huh, and I had very little clue what I was doing.   I got at least one thing right, that I would recommend you do from now on when you thrust yourself into the unknown- get a coach or mentor.   When I got the call to present and take this next leap in my career, I jumped first, looked for a parachute second.   I remember hanging up the phone with Bedros, there was excitement and nerves all at once, so I did the only thing I could think of; I called my mentor to get his advice.    Alex gave me some really good instruction and I felt prepared, but the minute I took that stage most of that went out the window as I began to pace the stage like a caged lion.    Somehow I survived that day and got some good feedback. I guess people hadn’t seen many presenters yet. HA!   I remember most this one thing Alex said to me after the talk. He asked: “how did you feel?” I responded that I “thought I was confident.” And he said something that has always stuck with me, he said” “Vito, don’t just say it, BE it.”   I don’t think it dawned on me until years later the difference between saying something and BEING something. One is momentary and can come and go, but being something means it’s who you have become, who you are.   I know from that day on I wanted to BE confident, not just think I was, feel I was, or hope I was- I wanted to BE it.   Flash forward to today and many years of study later working on how to master the art of confidence, I’ve put together a little blueprint for you how to generate the kind of confidence that kills every time.   That last part surprises people. Generating confidence? Isn’t confidence something that you’re born with?    Doesn’t confidence come from money or good looks or some other thing that some are just lucky to have inherited? Nope.   Confidence, like any skill, requires work and practice. It’s like a muscle that you need to work on constantly. To build something that is going to constantly help your brand and business, you need to work at it.    I’ve put together something I call the Confidence Ladder.    It’s a series of steps that provide a framework for putting your confidence front and center.   Step One: Build and Decide.   This very first step of building confidence happens in the smallest synapses of our brain. It is a very basic thing, and yet so complex. It’s easier said than done…to build confidence we need to simply DECIDE to be more confident.   You’d be surprised at how effective and important that one belief becomes. Too many times, we go through life expecting bad things to happen or letting a negative thought derail our whole day. Let that go and embrace your confident future.   A simple exercise I have all my high performance students do is to set a daily reminder on their phone.    Most people now live and die by their phone, so I have them put a little reminder in their calendar that is set to go off at 9am, everyday, with an alert, that reads ‘Be More Confident.”   This way no matter how bad the morning was going, they get a jolt, at 9am that snaps them back into their confidence and they can course correct the day and get a few more hours of productive living back in.   Little by little that daily reminder becomes the person.   It’s all about intention.    It’s a crucial first step and one that determines your success moving forward.   Step Two: Sustain. Have a North Star.   It’s not enough to just decide to be confident. You have to be able to weather the storm of uncertainty and worry. That’s where many people fall or lose momentum.   And momentum is a confidence builder.   If you are constantly being derailed in life you can never get a full head of steam behind you to really push things through to heightened and sustained levels of action. Heightened and sustained levels of confidence are necessary if you want to achieve greater things in life and take your business to the next level.   The key to sustained confidence is an understanding of your purpose in life or what I like to simply call “Have a North Star.”   Which just means, have that thing that is up in the night sky always calling to you, beckoning you on, just out of your reach that is bigger than you. Something you might not ever attain, so that when the moments of doubt come, you can always remember you are living for something more important than doubt, worry, criticism, and fear.    Aim Your Skills.   If you’re one of those people who sit around saying “I don’t know how to do that?” Or “I don’t know what to do.”   Have you heard of Google?    If there’s something you’d like to know more about, look it up, take a course and work on your professional and personal development versus sitting there thinking you don’t know what to do or how to do something. That’s just the lazy man’s excuse today.   Anything can be learned, researched, and studied if it’s important to helping you achieve your dreams and marching towards that North Star.   Are you willing to create a learning plan? Stick to it? Invest in it?   Arm yourself with as much knowledge and professional experience as you can. Earn the skills that will take you to the next level.      Step Three: Teach   Sharing is caring…and what better way to share your experience and knowledge than teaching?   Teaching, whether it’s online or in person, is a great way to showcase your confidence. It’s the natural culmination of your expertise and it, in turn, feeds your confidence further because your knowledge has now been tested.   Let today be the day that you assume the mantle of a confident leader.    Build, sustain, and teach that confidence in order to keep the train of your life going.    There is no telling where you will end up if you apply my framework. I can tell you this: you’ll leave behind any other fit pros that aren’t so sure of themselves.    People that don’t invest in themselves and don’t put in the time to be the most advanced and confident fit pros in the market aren’t going to have clients or business gravitate toward them.   In today’s ever expanding marketplace, where time and money are getting scarcer by the day, clients will head towards the men and women who project confidence and value.    Those people aren’t the ones who were born confident. They are the ones who work on themselves and ignore the negative frequencies that trip us up in our everyday lives.    It’s inside you, so get to work on bringing it out to the world. There is no greater purpose.
