Our Global Chief Economist surveys recent US and Australian census data to explain immigration's impact on labor supply and demand, as well as the implications for monetary policy. ----- Transcript -----Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Seth Carpenter, Morgan Stanley's Global Chief Economist, along with my colleagues bringing you a variety of perspectives. And today, I'll be talking about immigration, economic growth, and the implications for monetary policy. It's Monday, April 1st, at 10am in New York.Global migration is emerging as an important macro trend. Some migration patterns change during and after COVID, and such changes can have first order effects on the population and labor force of an economy. That fact has meant that several central banks have discussed immigration in the context of their economic outlook; and we focus here on the Fed and the Reserve Bank of Australia, the RBA.In the US, recent population estimates from the CBO and the census suggests that immigration has been and is still driving faster growth in the population and labor supply, helping to explain some of last year's upside surprise in non-farm perils. In Australia, the issue is even longer standing, and accelerated migration in recent years has provided important support to consumption and inflation. From a macro perspective, immigration can boost both aggregate demand and aggregate supply. More specifically, more immigration can lead to stronger consumption spending, a larger labor force, and may drive investment spending. The permanence of the immigration, like some immigrants are temporary students or just visiting workers, the skill level of the migrants and the speed of labor force integration are consequential -- in determining whether supply side or demand side effects dominate. Demand side effects tend to be more inflationary and supply side effects more disinflationary. In Australia, the acceleration in immigration has played an important driver in population growth and aggregate demand. In the decade before COVID, net migration added about a percentage point to the population growth annually. In 2022 and 2023, the growth rate accelerated beyond two percent. The pace of growth and migration and the type of migration have supported consumption spending and made housing demand outpace housing supply. Our Australia economists note that net migration will likely remain a tailwind for spending in 2024 -- but with significant uncertainty about the magnitude. In stark contrast, recent evidence in the US suggests that the surge in immigration has had a relatively stronger impact on aggregate supply. Growth in 2023 surprised to the upside, even relative to our rosier than consensus outlook.Academic research on US states suggests that over the period from 1970 to 2006, immigration tended to increase capital about one for one with increases in labor -- because the capital labor ratio in states receiving more immigrants remained relatively constant. That is, the inflow of immigrants stimulated an increase in investment.Of course, the sector of the economy that attracts the immigrants matters a lot. Immigrants joining sectors with lesser capital intensiveness may show less of this capital boosting effect. So, what are the implications for monetary policy? Decidedly, mixed. In the short run, more demand from any of the above sources will tend to be inflationary, and that suggests a higher policy rate is needed. But, as any supply boosting effects manifest, easier policy is called for to allow the economy to grow into that higher potential. So, a little bit here, a little bit there. Over the long run, though, only a persistently faster growth rate in immigration, as opposed to a one-off surge, would be able to raise the equilibrium rate, the so-called R star, on a permanent basis. Thanks for listening. If you enjoy the show, please leave us a review wherever you listen to podcasts and share Thoughts on the Market with a friend or a colleague today.

In an era of drones, loitering munitions, precision strikes, and manoeuvre warfare; discussing fortification seems almost quaint. Surely the revolution in military affairs and its successors have rendered bunkers and fixed positions irrelevant. If the future battlefield is transparent and the kill chain is as swift as proponents anticipate, staying still is a death sentence. That is, of course, a trite assessment, but it reflects that very little consideration is given to hardened positions in the modern era. King's College London professor David Betz offers an interesting corrective to this misguided notion in his new book "The Guarded Age" (a copy of which was kindly provided for review by the publisher). In the interests of full disclosure, Betz was one of my tutors at King's whilst I pursued my MA in War Studies. Readers will now undoubtedly attempt to divine how fairly he marked my papers based on the outcome of this review. Fortifications are not just castles and bunkers, as Betz shrewdly shows. The process of fortification is, ultimately, about controlling and channelling the movement of forces and people (and data, too). Sensibly broadening the definition without losing fidelity allows for a more nuanced consideration. Fortifications are all around us when we stop and look. Indeed, much of urban design and planning incorporates fortification at a base level. As the war in Gaza illustrates, cities themselves, both before and after destruction, are perhaps the ultimate fortified position. Designed to channel the flow of people when intact, they serve as superb hardened positions when destroyed - deadly for offensive forces but ideal for defenders, enabling them to hold key positions and tie down attackers with minimal resources. Whether Haussman's redesign of Parisian streets to prevent the creation of barricades or the redesign of the Strand outside of King's College London and across from Bush House, city planning is about restricting movement and creating safety and security. From personal experience, the space outside King's was hazardous to students' health as lorries, cars, and cyclists competed for space. After considerable renovation and redesign, the space outside the Strand Campus is a delightful haven for students. There is a palpable sense of enthusiasm, tempered by shrewd professionalism, that suffuses Betz' writing and elevates his final product. "The Guarded Age" is a book that runs counter to the zeitgeist of defence and security writing, where everything is about mobility, manoeuvre, autonomy, and precision. In an era when everything seems fluid, writing about something that is fixed seems odd. In less enthusiastic hands, the case for discussing and considering what fortifications are and could be would be harder to make. Writing about fortifications of the past? Decidedly easier. Writing about fixed positions and emplacements when everything is about drones and hypersonic munitions? Vastly more difficult. Fortifications have a "strategic stratigraphy" to them, Betz writes. In essence, successive cultures, countries, or armed forces build upon the fortifications and embattlements of the past - a palimpsest approach to digging in and hardening positions. This, on reflection, is rather self-evidence but a novel way of looking at the bastions of the past and today. As others like Tim Marshall have eloquently written, geography still matters. While it does certainly change due to geological, meteorological, and cartographic developments, high ground remains high ground, channels remain channels, and the desire for strategic advantage endures. Yet beyond the positioning of fortresses, their design remains strikingly consistent - stone walls are succeeded by Hesco barriers and moats are replaced by concrete bollards. Even the designs of the past are found in use today, with medieval star forts being replicated in the Sahel. A good idea remains a good idea. Perhaps the sole exception to this rule is in the r...

Greetings! This week's program focuses on bands that will be playing on the 2024 edition of Cruise To The Edge, a progressive rock experience at sea. The eighth CTTE voyage will set sail from Miami, Florida on March 8th with yours truly aboard, making our way to Cozumel, Mexico. Headliners include Marillion, Steve Hacket, Flying Colors & Big Big Train, accompanied by returning acts Adrian Belew, Martin Barre, The Flower Kings, Haken, Protocol, Queensrÿche, Airbag, Baraka, Klone, and Wishbone Ash. There will be a number of newcomers as well including Gryphon, Lonely Robot, Claudio Simonetti's Goblin as well as Symphony X. To say I'm psyched is an understatement, so I've crammed as many artists into today's show as I could. Enjoy! Jess is the mom of two boys, she is sweet, honest and was a sucker for the mommy wine culture. It seemed normal to her.Jess shared how she was hanging in the crowd that did everything with alcohol until she found This Naked Mind and started to become curious as sobriety. The first year of sobriety for her was very much about survival, how can I get past the witching hour. And then she came to believe this was her new identity as a non-drinking in long-term sobriety. Jess focused on healing and being of service. She created a journal to help herself and others to build confidence, self-love and healing in sobriety. She found it so beneficial as a chance to be off the screens in front of her boys. Because of the modern sobriety movement, making this change wasn't significantly difficult for her within her social circles. Having fun and non-alcoholic products helped her feel comfortable.Jess is the host and founder of Decidedly Dry. She inspires the ever-growing sober community and believes it is her calling to help women embrace a sober lifestyle. She's the mom of two active, adventurous and loving boys, and resides in the beautiful Pacific Northwest.https://decidedlydry.substack.com/ IG: @decidedlydrySupport the showSupport the showOh, and by the way, if you didn't know, my program Sober Freedom Transformation is now open! It is for women who have been sober for a year to many and are ready to discover who they want to be in long term sobreity, develop confidence and improve their relationships. If you aren't part of the Confident Sober Women Facebook group, it's a great place to be. There are over a thousand other sober women there building lives they don't want to escape from. Come on over and join us.And if you haven't read my memoir, grab a copy today and maybe a second one for a friend. There is so much hope in recovery, and I shared my story so raw and vulnerably so that others would know they aren't alone and that there is a way to live well, manage relationships, parent your kids, and have a healthy body, all while staying sober. Greetings! As we close out 2023, I thought I'd sample a bit of new & classic prog in addition to sampling some tracks from releases I acquired thanks to this cool free music download web-site, "https://www.getmusic.fm/". Per the site, "artists can promote their Bandcamp releases without having to worry about tracking codes. When a fan clicks the link to redeem a code, it's automatically redeemed, and the code is marked as used so that it won't be handed out again." It's an excellent way to explore music in many different genres, for free! Check it out. Here's wishing you a happy and healthy new year! Greetings! This week's program features lots of new releases in varied genres in addition to another track from the Larks' Tongues In Aspic (The Complete Recording Sessions) 50th Anniversary release. LTIA has always been one of my favorite KC albums and now even more so with the new Steven Wilson and old David Singleton mixes. It only made sense to precede that track with a new take on the KC classic, "Starless" from Crimson alumnus, David Cross from his latest, "Ice Blue, Silver Sky". Enjoy! Greetings! Well...in October I was back in Connecticut for my 50th high school reunion and on the way back I had to make my quarterly pilgrimage to the Princeton Record Exchange and load up, thus the title of today's program, an inquiry from my wife. I was thrilled to find a bunch of CDs released on Foster Reed's wonderful New Albion label. I've never been a completist about any label or artist, but I've been making a concerted effort to obtain the New Albion catalog due to their consistent high quality in terms of performances, composers and recording quality. While no longer producing new releases, they are available for digital download. Do check their catalog out. http://www.newalbion.com Enjoy! Lots of cool things this week with a focus on Ian Power's new release, "Ave Maria: Variations on a Theme by Giacinto Scelsi" which I felt could not be done justice by only playing a portion of it. In this week's Omni Talk Fast Five, sponsored by the A&M Consumer and Retail Group, Firework, SPS Commerce, and Sezzle, Chris and Anne: – Were conflicted, yet optimistic, about Walmart's new microfulfillment center inside of an Arkansas store – Decidedly split in their opinion about Wakefern's new Freeosk take on in-store sampling – Agreed on the long-term significance of Uber debuting group buying for groceries – Lapped up Walmart adding free virtual veterinary visits to its Walmart+ membership – And, finally, already started jonesing for the day when they can pay for everything with their palms, including alcohol via Amazon's new age verification system There's all that, plus Pipedreams, marriage proposals aboard superyachts, and the oh so important disclaimer that, yes, Anne and Chris indeed do all their own stunts for their podcast.
