“I don't think anyone can live this life and not be affected.” Sara Wilkinson, gold star wife of Navy SEAL Chad Wilkinson, joins Emily and Jason in Jacksonville for Episode 047 in hard, honest conversation about growing up in a military family, her and Chad's love story, the life of deployments as a military spouse, being a mom to Kinsley and Hudson, and Chad's death by suicide in 2018 and the birth of Chad 1000x. SCPO Chad Wilkinson was born into the Navy. Both his uncle and father were SEALs (before his dad became a Marine One helicopter pilot) and Sara says it was what Chad was born to do. As a fellow military kid he, with his two brothers and sister, grew up on bases and he ultimately graduated from Camp Lejeune HS. After a year at UCF, Chad enlisted in the Navy and successfully completed BUD/S. After three deployments with SEAL Team Eight, Chad left service for almost three years. He re-entered and (as Sara recounts) rejoined and was selected to join SEAL Team Six out of VA Beach. Among many deployments in Afghanistan, Iraq and various places in Africa, Chad served for 21 years and was the recipient of the Silver Star. Chad was on active duty in Virginia Beach when he died by suicide on October 29, 2018.  Sara met Chad on her first day of 9th grade on a base in Quantico, VA. It was the 14th of 15 K-12 schools she would attend as “a military kid born and bred,” daughter of a Marine. Chad's signature “hey” started a surprise Homecoming invitation her sophomore year and a long, somewhat tumultuous courtship. Separations, breakups, and life changes punctuated their teenage and early adult years, culminating in a proposal and elopement right before Chad's second deployment. Throughout, Sara says, “I wanted to be where he was.” Two great kids, a separation and reenlistment in the Navy, cross country moves, climbing mountains and finding community in CrossFit followed.  Sara talks about the unique personality required to survive and thrive to be married to the guys who do this work: fearlessness, independence, resilience. And the terrible toll that it can take on tier one operators as well as “their first responders.” She talks through the “what ifs” and all the looking back she has done to see if there were signs of Chad's unseen injuries which ultimately led to his death. “There's so many questions you're never going to get answers to.”  Finally, as one who knows what it feels like to have her person gone, Sara talks about her call to suicide-prevention advocacy, community with other widows, and the search for the multiple answers for others as well as finding some healing for herself. She, with Jason and Emily, share the story of the birth of Chad 1000x and The StepUp Project and how the ripple effects of Chad's life and death continue to move outward.  This is a long conversation so some timestamps to help navigate it: 0:00 - Introduction and excerpts from Sara's speech at the National Navy SEAL Museum on Memorial Day 0:05 - Sara's young life and meeting Chad 0:15 - College years and BUDs 0:25 - Proposal, elopement, and living in the “team house” in VA Beach, living as a military spouse 0:34 - Move to Raleigh and decision to “get back in,” move to CA… and back to VA Beach 0:44 - Finding CrossFit and life back in VA Beach with SEAL Team 6 deployments 0:50 - Early signs, symptoms, leading up to 2008 1:20 - Chad's last days and death 1:35 - The aftermath, what has helped Sara 1:40 - The birth of Chad 1000x and going forward Links: Sara on Instagram National Navy SEAL Museum “Crossfit - Meet Sara” (2013) Video The First Chad1000x Video Episode 028 - Dave Castro and Morning ChalkUp Story Learn more about GORUCK and Chad 1000x Glorious Professionals podcast website

Season 3, Episode 2: Darren ThorntonIn this episode of Two-Brain Radio, Mateo Lopez of Two-Brain Marketing speaks with Darren Thornton, owner of CrossFit Defy in Toronto, Ontario.Though Darren’s passion for CrossFit was born out of a love for competition, today, he runs CrossFit Defy for one purpose: to help people get better at life. He’s also a brand-new entrepreneur—CrossFit Defy is less than one year old.But that doesn’t mean he lacks experience to share. Darren learned quickly the lesson it takes many gym owners years to learn: Get help. Though he’d experimented with Facebook ads and had hired another coach just a few months after opening, he soon realized he needed “a bit of direction.” The business was stable, but growth had halted.Today, after completing the Incubator, Darren is flourishing in Farmer Phase, having learned some valuable lessons about business structure, digital marketing and how to hire according to your long-term vision.Links:https://crossfitdefy.com/https://www.levelmethod.com/Contact: darren@crossfitdefy.comTimeline: 2:11 – Finding CrossFit in the British Royal Marines.3:58 – From commando to competitor to gym owner.5:21 – Discovering Two-Brain Business: “I knew I needed help.”6:30 – Darren’s mission: to help people get better at life.8:18 – Lessons learned in the Incubator.10:49 – Onboarding new clients, personal training and hybrid memberships.12:28 – It’s all about relationships.17:15 – Upselling as you go.18:59 – Hiring for the bigger picture.24:25 – There’s no magic success pill—you’ve got to work for it.

This week we talk to Bethany Pappas, owner of CrossFit Loft in West Seattle.  From creating handmade puzzles to hustling townys into her window washing biz at age 10, Bethany has always had an entrepreneurial spirit.    Finding CrossFit and subsequently opening Jet City CrossFit with her father, she eventually split off to open her own fitness business.  With the support of her wife, Bethany takes us on the trials and tribulations with getting a small business off the ground and running a very successful fitness brand. We travel the road of a micro-gym; going from CrossFit only six years ago to offering yoga, weightlifting, strongman, mobility, bootcamp, high intensity interval training.  Expansion and constant construction.  Upgrading, adding classes, variety of training and quality and quantity of coaches.  What has stayed and makes it all possible is the positive culture within the community. We get into CrossFit as a positive/negative brand.  Where CrossFit is heading.  What's going on this year as a competitive CrossFit athlete and competitor programs.  Separation of CrossFit and The Games.   Escaping the restaurant business, we talk about our transition to working with "normal" people.  Micro-relationships vs. personal investment.  What's going on in todays restaurant. We flow into education, the future, depression, entrepreneurship, relationships, adrenalin/work addiction, personality tests, family.  Living for your children. We go deep into insecurities, drinking as a coping mechanism, and being ok and accepting yourself.  We examine sobriety, and what dependency is.   Finish with brining it back to what entrepreneurs should do going into a business venture.  What to look out for.  Not being afraid to seek advice.  And finding financial mentorship.

Happy Saturday! I hope your weekend is absolutely lovely and not painfully cold like it's going to be here in Colorado. I'm so not into it. And don't tell me not to complain - I'm a Colorado native, I earned my complaints! Anywho, let's talk about confidence. I thought this was a great topic to go over because it's something that I struggled with for a long time. About 23+ years. And working in a gym and online with many, many women, I often see other women struggle with it as well. So I thought this would be the best platform to really talk about what I struggled with and how I pushed through those negative thoughts. And I think it's good to remember that confidence is ever-evolving as we grow and change! Here's a quick run down of what has worked for me (listen to hear full details and I'll have it transcribed soon!): Ridding myself of the relationships that created negative experiences and negative energy and bringing positive relationships into my life I stopped looking at magazines and certain social media that made me feel insecure. It wasn't other people's fault I had those feelings, but I had to recognize how I felt and why and face the changes I had to make Finding CrossFit, lifting, and competing in CrossFit Stopped comparing myself to others Faced my own inner demons Stopped obsessing over food Stopped competing in CrossFit when it was no longer making me happy Stopped caring what others thought of me since I like me! And I stopped obsessing over the little things that were meaningless Those are the things that made me the happiest person I've ever been in the last 4 or so years. And I hope just thinking through those things and thinking about what truly makes you happy and acting on it, gets you to your happiest place in your life! Listen to the podcast then let me know if you have any questions or if I missed yours! Thanks for asking all your questions, I have so much fun answering them and they make the podcast way more exciting! See all previous podcasts here! Episode 13 Transcription: This is Juli Bauer from PaleOMG and you are listening to PaleOMG Uncensored. Juli Bauer: Well good morning! I don’t know what time of day you’re listening to this; and I don’t know why I’m saying good morning, because it’s 5:15 p.m. on a Friday night here. But you know what; it’s been a busy f*cking day, so I’m going to call it morning. Because that just sounds really nice. You know what does not sound really nice? I’ll tell you what. My best friend; my maid of honor; she’s the best girl in the whole wide world. Literally the f*cking best. Her birthday is tomorrow, on Saturday. And you know what she decides? She decides that she wants everyone to run a 5K for her birthday. Take a second to think about that. That’s f*cked up. Ok, that’s f*cked up. I always say I hate running. I don’t hate running, I just don’t like to do it for long bouts of time over a mile. It’s just really boring to me. I don’t want to f*cking just keep my legs moving. Not interested. But she’s all into trail running. Does marathon; whatever they're called, triathlons, just that kind of sh*t. gross, whatever. So she wants to run a 5K for her birthday; cool, I’ll run a 5K. I’ll do whatever you need me to. The problem is; tomorrow, in Colorado, it’s going to be negative; the race is at 11. It’s going to be -1 degrees outside; or is that degree; degree? No plural. -1 degree. Oh, she’s texting me right now. Whatever Laura. So we’re going to be running a 5K because it has not been canceled yet. In -1 degree weather. What the f*ck? Why can’t she just be normal? Why can’t we go to brunch, get buzzed on a Saturday afternoon? Do what normal people do on their birthday? So disappointed in her. I can only talk sh*t about her because I’m prett...
