A note from Talking Taiwan host Felicia Lin:   When Taiwan went in to soft lockdown in May, a group of diaspora who had moved there decided a Covid 19 Taiwan fundraiser for organizations assisting society's most vulnerable was needed. They created the Taiwan Covid Relief Fundraiser and before they launched it, I spoke with three of the seven organizers- Catherine, Kevin and Jane.   We talked about how the charities benefitting from the fundraiser provide direct assistance to the homeless, disabled, migrant workers and survivors of domestic violence, and how all donations will go directly to the participating organizations. The fundraiser's organizing team has pledged to match the first $10,000 donated. The team's novel approach to organizing the Taiwan Covid Relief Fundraiser has given the charity organizations greater exposure to English language speakers and international donors.   The #TaiwanCovidRelief Fundraiser Organizing Team:   Catherine Chou is a second-generation Taiwanese-American who writes on Taiwanese history and identity, and tweets at @catielila.   Kevin Lin is the Co-Founder and former Chief Operating Officer of Twitch. He was born and raised in New Orleans. Through co-founding groups like Gold House, Kevin is giving back to communities that he cares about through sustainable investing, hoping to support creators of all shapes and sizes. @kevinlin Jane W. One of the biggest complaints you'll hear from people in business is that “there's not enough time in the day”... any yet many of us are wasting so much of it without even realising.  This can cause overwhelm, stress, anxiety and potentially burnout… and that's why I wanted to bring Catherine Gladwyn on this show.  She's an expert business mentor and multi-award winning #1 bestselling author of two business books. Catherine Adel West (author of Saving Ruby King) talks about how she found her agent, the strong women of Saving Ruby King, and how she decided to make the church a narrator. This post contains affiliate links, through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights How different her first draft was from the final book. The story of how she found an agent (via a Twitter contest for marginalized writers!) and Saving Ruby King was bought by a publisher. The exact tweet she used to pitch Saving Ruby King in the Twitter contest. Her advice to querying writers. Saving Ruby King‘s original title and Ruby’s original name. The message Catherine wanted to share about the strengths and struggles of black women through her story and her characters. What growing up on the South Side of Chicago was like for Catherine. How she decided to make the church a narrator. How her own relationship with her faith and church shaped the book. Her Dad’s (he’s a pastor and the character of Jackson Potter is based on him) reaction to the book. The prequel to Saving Ruby King that Catherine is currently working on…and the possibility of this being a 4 book series. How Catherine got Leesa Cross-Smith to blurb Saving Ruby King. The Enlightenment´s emphasis on science, progress, tolerance and rationality not only attracted philosophers. Even absolute monarchs dreamt of “Enlightenment Now.” But how do you combine enlightenment without undermining the traditions and ideas that legitimate absolute rule in the first place? Fortunately for Europe´s modernizing rulers, some of Europe´s most prominent 18th century philosophes – including Voltaire - stood ready to praise and legitimize the new winds of “enlightened despotism” that took hold in places like Russia and Prussia.     In this episode, we cover the ground zero of enlightened despotism: Russia. A country whose Tsar Peter the Great, according to Voltaire, single-handedly dragged across both time and place from the Dark Ages and Asia into the 18th century and Europe. Among the topics tackled are:  How the benefits of modern science, learning and the fresh air of religious tolerance attracted Peter the Great. How Peter the Great believed in “move fast and break tradition” and combined enlightenment reforms with ruthless suppression How Peter kicked off his modernizing reform with a fashion statement ordering men to shave their beards and women to dress like Parisians How Peter´s reforms planted the seed for more liberal Enlightenment reforms How Catherine the Great, introduced the idea and principle of freedom of speech into Russia´s deeply traditional culture How Catherine modelled her “Great Instruction” on the ideas of Montesquieu and Beccaria and corresponded with thinkers like Voltaire, Diderot, and D´Alembert. How Catherine reversed her course and tightened censorship How the French Revolution caused Catherine to crack down on radical Russian writers like Alexander Radischev and Nikolay Novikov How Alexander Radischev used relied on “freedom of the press as the great bulwark of liberty” to write the most radical and robust defense of free speech in Russian history. Why have kings, emperors, and governments killed and imprisoned people to shut them up? And why have countless people risked death and imprisonment to express their beliefs? Jacob Mchangama guides you through the history of free speech from the trial of Socrates to the Great Firewall.   PROFILES SUPPLY CHAIN CONVERSATIONS   —————————————————   EPISODE 2 CATHERINE COOPER ON CHANGE MANAGEMENT, INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS, AND DEFINING SUCCESS   —————————————————   Welcome to Episode 2 of Profiles, a podcast centered around supply chain conversations hosted by Brian Glick, founder and CEO of Chain.io. Our guest this week is Catherine Cooper. Educated as an engineer, Catherine has dedicated her career to the logistics industry with the last 18 years in top leadership positions (CIO of a $1 Billion global logistics service provider and president of two successful consulting firms). She founded World Connections in 2006 where she works with senior executives from Fortune 500 companies, private equity firms, and global logistics service providers who partner with Catherine to develop innovative solutions at the intersection of technology and people. Recent clients include QVC, Coca-Cola Enterprises, and Gap Inc. Catherine's articles on leadership, project management, technical trends, and change management are published in these industry journals: Inbound Logistics, Food Logistics, IIE Solutions, Operations and Fulfillment, and Distribution Management.     The real definition of success to the wife of the climber and the children of the dad who’s climbing is getting down the mountain and coming down alive…    Listen in as Brian and Catherine discuss: How Catherine got into the supply chain business and why she decided to stay The evolution of change management in regards to people vs. technology Tips for how to keep change management in scope Why Catherine founded her business, World Connections What Catherine wishes she had known at the beginning of her career that she’s learned since The challenges that folks who are new to the supply chain industry face today Best practice for handling employee mistakes, especially in light of how costly supply chain mistakes can be The balance between A.I. tech and human involvement in supply chain processes Upcoming challenges that logistics practitioners need to be aware of Whether best practices for brand messaging should also be applied to internal communications regarding change management and project implementation The importance of leaders to openly communicate risk so that it is shared by more than just the person in charge    You need to help your team understand the difference between no evidence of risk, and that that is not evidence of no risk. Try to explain to them that these are the things that are out there, do we all agree we’re going forward with this level of uncertainty? Do we all agree this is a risk? And I think getting people to share the risk with you will certainly help you in your career because it becomes a thing where you’re the leader of the discussion but not the sole owner of all the problems.    Links and resources mentioned in the show: World Connections “When the Chain Breaks”, an article from The Economist   Subscribe to the podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts so that you’re updated when we post a new episode!   Take care, and until next time,   Brian Glick chain.io

I'm really excited to be sitting down with Catherine Beard of The Blissful Mind this week to talk about the importance of mindfulness and self-care, two topics that I have become pretty focused on as of late. Our conversation starts with the power of awareness, as Catherine shares how mindfulness found its way into her life and what it's changed as a result. We also talk about the difference between mindfulness and meditation, as well as the tools that allow you to be more mindful in your everyday life. We round out the conversation with a discussion about self-care and mindfulness and how they are integral pieces of the same puzzle. And while all of those things are pretty darn great, my favorite part about this conversation is how Catherine is able to make mindfulness approachable and grounded in our current reality. Because without mindfulness, life becomes a never-ending sprint to the finish line of acquiring more things without really pausing to appreciate the journey that got you there. I’d love to hear from you! What stood out most from Catherine’s interview? What role does mindfulness play in your own life?   Topics Discussed: An introduction to Catherine Beard and what she does How Catherine got into mindfulness by way of minimalism and a capsule wardrobe The power of awareness and how that has changed Catherine's journey Knowing better versus doing better Our daily choices and how routines help to keep you on track How to create a morning or evening routine that works for you The difference between meditation and mindfulness Easy ways to infuse more mindfulness into your day Mindfulness and eating — finding a way to slow down and savor each bite Self-care and how that relates to mindfulness Consumer-based self-care versus true holistic self-care Self-care versus laziness and where do you draw the line The chicken and egg question around self-care and mindfulness The boundaries between work and play and how mindfulness plays a role Mindfulness and religion. Algae may not sound sexy, but hopefully it makes you feel sexy. Catharine Arnston the CEO of ENERGYbits is here today to talk about all of the wonderful health benefits of algae. In this episode of the Clean Eating for Women podcast, we talk about:   How Catherine decided to devote her life into making algae a mainstream product Algae is the fastest, purest, safest, most nutrient dense way to get your body all of the nutrients it needs in seconds Health benefits of algae Some highlights of this episode: Algae found Catherine when her younger sister developed breast cancer. Catherine's sister's doctor advised her to go on an alkaline based diet to help with the chemo. Phytonutrients and chlorophyll are all very cleansing and healing to the body. Catherine's sister switched her diet and completely healed. [01:34] Catherine read about 10 books on the topic and then went to the Institute for Integrative Nutrition and got a certificate as a health coach. She taught green nutrition. She discovered that everybody knows they should eat more greens, but they are too busy or don't like the taste. [02:45] Algae is one of the most nutrient dense foods in the world. It has the highest concentration of chlorophyll of any greens. It also comes pressed into tiny little tablets that you can swallow or chew. Catherine decided to devote the rest of her life into making algae a mainstream product. [03:49] Algae was the first plant life on Earth. Algae releases oxygen and oxygenated the Earth. There are only a couple of edible algaes. Spirulina a blue-green algae.  The very first life form. Technically a bacteria. There is nothing for your body to breakdown. It stops the growth of cancer and has the highest concentration of protein in the world. It’s loaded with B vitamins and EFAs. [08:15] Chlorella has the highest concentration of chlorophyll in the world. It is one of the few fat based antioxidants. It heals the cell walls, so nutrients can get in and toxins can get out. It is cleansing and pulls out toxins. It even pulls out alcohol and radiation. It's hard cell attaches to the toxins. [15:41] RECOVERYbits Chlorella is cracked using sound waves. They make sure they have the cleanest algae ever seen. Chlorella is a health algae that pulls out toxins and helps keep us young. It builds the immune system. It also has a high concentration of tryptophan. [19:28] Have ENERGYbits or SKINNYbits in the morning, afternoon, and before workouts. You can have 30 or whatever suits you. Have the RECOVERYbits at night, so your body goes through a natural detox. It's also good to take RECOVERYbits before eating if you have digestive issues. [26:41] The first large scale algae production for large consumption started in the 1950s, but then it was closed down, and the Japanese spent 10 years trying to grow algae for mass consumption. They focused on Chlorella. This is why the industry is based in Asia. In Japan, they don't buy vitamins, they just take chlorella. The nutrient profile is so powerful it will get noticed. There aren't enough words to describe how excited I am for you all to hear this conversation I'm having with Catherine Rains, also known as The Hotel Artist! Alternate titles for this episode include: "Catherine Rains blows Steph's mind live on the air waves""Stop everything & listen to this" "Don't listen to this if you want to keep making excuses & staying stuck" In seriousness, it feels like I am telling you week after week that another of my "favorite episodes" is being published, which is such a cool feeling. But this episode is truly special. For one, the "Courage" & "Clarity" components are fused together in one jumbo episode because they were too intertwined to separate. Beyond that, Catherine is a captivating, open-book type storyteller who's got a few decades on me. As such, you'll hear her drop so much wisdom on me, I'm doing mental gymnastics live on the air just to keep up. There's so much growth here, so much to think about, and so much easy-to-apply-immediately mindset stuff that you really need to hear. In this episode, you'll hear: How to stop fighting AGAINST your circumstances, and instead learn to work WITH them A few precise mantras to help you stop dwelling in "tomorrow", "what if", "if only" & "someday"How Catherine used this mindset shift to go from hating her job, to loving it so much she cried when her dream job came along How Catherine was able to believe that cancer & divorce were amazing gifts, even as they were happening to herI know there's a lot of "mindset" and "positivity" stuff out there, but this episode resonated with me on a deeper level than many of the other books I've picked up or podcasts I've heard before. I hope you find the same to be true, and if you do, you have to let me know!
