With How to Train Your Dragon, Chris Sanders taught us about human-dragon friendship. And now, with The Wild Robot, he shows us what happens when technology becomes stranded in the wilderness: a robot named Rozz learns to have a mother's love for a gosling named Brightbill. Paul, Arlo, and forever-guest Eric Sipple discuss how the film merges its natural and sci-fi elements, Sanders' evolution as a filmmaker, the stunning voice performance of Lupita Nyong'o, and what the movie says about parenthood. Plus, Paul gets Born Again with Daredevil and all the celebrities are dying.   NEXT: three is the magic number in a Geek Challenge featuring John Landis' 1986 flop Three Amigos and Robert Altman's obscure 1977 head trip 3 Women.     BREAKDOWN 00:00:39  -  Intro / Guest 00:35:00  -  The Wild Robot 02:01:00  -  Outro / Next   MUSIC “Wild Wild Life” by Talking Heads, True Stories (1986) “Mr. Roboto” by Styx, Kilroy Was Here (1983)   GOBBLEDYCARES National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/  Abortion Funds in Every State: https://bit.ly/AbortionFundsTwitter Support AAPI communities and those affected by anti-Asian violence: https://www.gofundme.com/c/act/stop-aapi-hate Support the AAPI Civic Engagement Fund: https://aapifund.org/ Support Black Lives Matter and find anti-racism resources: https://blacklivesmatters.carrd.co/ The Trevor Project provides information and support to LGBTQ youth: thetrevorproject.org Trans Lifeline: https://translifeline.org/  National Center for Transgender Equality: transequality.org Advocate for writers who might be owed money due to discontinuance of royalties: https://www.writersmustbepaid.org/  Help teachers and classrooms in need: https://www.donorschoose.org/ Do your part to remove the burden of medical debt for individuals, families, and veterans: https://www.unduemedicaldebt.org/ Register to vote: https://vote.gov/

Episode 156 – Styx & Kansas Part 9, 1983 – Kilroy Was Here Another palaver years in the making. Kilroy Was Here is a clear enigma. Some of us LOVE this record. Some of us do not love this record. Some of us are in the middle. There are certainly some very strong feelings on each side of this, but they ultimately lead to interesting discussions. The group certainly had a great time discussing this record. Styx have given us much to consider with this offering. One of the first projects Orson Welles undertook after moving to Europe was a film version of Othello. Despite Macbeth's criticism, he was still confident he could produce a successful Shakespearean film. However, filming was erratic. Its original Italian producer announced on one of the first days of shooting that he was bankrupt. Instead of abandoning filming altogether, Welles as director began pouring his own money into the project. He took acting jobs to ensure continued production. He also raised money by going on the stage. In the summer of 1950 Welles appeared in Paris in his own play called The Blessed and The Damned, which consisted of a short film, called The Miracle of St. Anne, and two one-act plays. It received positive reviews. In August he traveled to Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich, where he starred in An Evening With Orson Welles. Filming of Othello stopped for months at a time to raise money. It took more than two years to complete and was shot in Morocco, Venice, Tuscany and Rome. Before the film's release, Welles played the Shakespearean drama on stage to audiences in Newcastle and London. A dubbed version of Othello premiered in Rome In November of 1951. Welles' original English-language version premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May of 1952. It won the Grand Prix and was released in Europe thereafter. When David O'Selznick got word that Harry Alan Towers had distributed The Adventures of Harry Lime to MGM, he refused to air it, so Towers took the series elsewhere. He quickly found out that MGM was now contractually obligated to provide a series with Welles to the Mutual Broadcasting System. So, in 1951 Towers went to Welles with another radio series. He'd already produced a series called The Secrets of Scotland Yard with Clive Brook. The new series would be called The Black Museum. It was based on real-life cases from the files of Scotland Yard. Walking through the museum, Welles would pause at one of the exhibits, describing an artifact that led into a dramatized tale of a brutal murder or a vicious crime. Towers visited Australia in the late 1940s and set up production facilities in Sydney. The Black Museum was produced there by Creswick Jenkinson. Ira Marion was scriptwriter and music for the series was composed and conducted by Sidney Torch. Orson Welles's introductions were recorded on tape in London, then flown to Australia to be added to the locally recorded performances. This was the first series to be produced in Australia in this way. The program was transcribed in 1951. In the U.S. Mutual Broadcasting carried the series, with more than five-hundred stations airing it. In New York it began airing Tuesdays at 8PM on New Year's Day, 1952. Episode twenty-seven was called “The Notes” or “Kilroy Was Here.” “Kilroy Was Here” is a graffiti scrawl or meme of debated origin that became popular during World War II. It was associated with GIs stationed in Europe, depicting a bald-headed man with prominent nose clutching at and peeking over a wall. Next to him was the phrase. Robert Rietti played leads and Keith Pyott was often in the cast. Beginning In May of 1953, The Black Museum was also broadcast over Radio Luxembourg, a commercial radio station, and was not broadcast by the BBC until 1991. The Black Museum aired for the calendar year of 1952 over Mutual. It was rebroadcast on KABC, Los Angeles, in 1963 and 1964, and on KUAC—FM in Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1967. In 2002, Harry Alan Towers produced The Black Museum for TV, hiring Gregory Mackenzie to be director and showrunner. The anthology series used Welles' original narration. The adaptation was shot on location in London in a film noir style and the pilot starred Michael York as Scotland Yard Inspector Russell.

This time, we're talking to former Army Cav Officer and novelist Brett Allen. After graduating college and being commissioned through ROTC, Brett went on to serve in the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum, NY. Luckily, having grown up in Michigan he was used to the ridiculously cold winters and snow. Then the army saw fit to send him to another ridiculously cold location half-way around the world - the mountains of Southern Afghanistan. There's something about the military; soldiers are plucked from their lives and inserted into a delegation of characters from every corner of the country and world. What better to do than take note and turn them into characters in your satirical novel? That's exactly what Brett did in his novel Kilroy Was Here, a semi-autobiographical take on his time in Afghanistan. We talk about how 9/11 played a part in his decision to serve, how being plucked from the Army's best job, Platoon Leader, is like being “sodomized,” and how if you shove 20-something peeps into your mouth you will be laughed at, and may me yelled at.You can pick up a copy of Kilroy Was Here at Amazon and wherever you buy your books. This episode was made possible in part by the good AMERICANS at Black Rifle Coffee Company.

We often think of memes as living solely online. But the term “meme” was coined in the 1970s -- before the birth of the internet -- by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins. And, more surprisingly, the image that's often considered to "the first meme" appeared as early as the 1940s.  A figure with a bulbous head and sausage fingers, peering over a wall, mysteriously popped up all over the globe during World War II, accompanied with three simple words: “Kilroy Was Here.” The phrase's original meaning may come from the belly of warships, but what it came to represent bears many characteristics of a true-blue internet meme. In the first episode of our meme series, we tell the story of where "Kilroy Was Here" came from, how it spread, and what it tells us about the essence of memes.

His quest to serve in combat took him to Afghanistan in 2009, and while not immune to the effects of a well placed IED, his experience in combat fell short of what he had expected, catalyzing his desire to portray it in his recently published novel, “Kilroy Was Here”. What the Riff?!?
1981 - June: Billy Squier "Don't Say No"

What the Riff?!?

This second studio album is the one that would put Billy Squier at the top of the arena rock world in 1981.  Don't Say No would produce Squier's first breakthrough single, “The Stroke,” a critique of the music industry, and the album would continue to contribute singles and AOR hits as it remained on the Billboard album charts for over 2 years.Billy Squier got his start in the Boston music scene in the late 60's, playing in locally successful groups through the 70's, and releasing a moderately successful solo album in the spring of 1980.  Squier approached Brian May of Queen about producing his second album, but May had scheduling conflicts that kept him from working with Squier.  However, Brian May suggested Squier work with Reinhold Mack who had produced “The Game” for Queen.  Billy Squier would later continue his connection with Queen, opening for the band during their 1982 tour.  Billy Squier wrote his own songs and was a multi-instrumentalist, playing guitar, piano, and percussion.Squier left the music scene in the early 90's with the advent of grunge, but he often tours with Ringo Star as a part of his All Star Band.  He also does one-off concerts for charity, but spends much of his time in New York City with his wife. Are you ready for some early 80's arena rock?  Don't Say No! In the DarkThis song was the second single from the album, and the lead song for the album.  Some think that this song is about lovers keeping their cheating relationships secret.  This album is considered to bridge the hard rock sounds of the 70's with heavy metal of the 80's.  It has a Zeppelinesque feel to it.Don't Say NoThe title track is the last song on the album, and a deeper cut that was never released as a single.  It has an interesting “fade in” effect to kick it off.My Kind of LoverWhile this third single narrowly missed the top 40 (it made it to number 45), it was heavily played at the time.  It has a pop sentiment to it, but is a pretty straightforward song about sex and chasing a woman.Lonely Is the NightSurprisingly, this song was not released as a single, and did not make Squier's greatest hits album.  It's about a guy watching streetwalkers.  It was the B-side of “In the Dark,” and received heavy air play on rock radio. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme to “Raiders of the Lost Ark”This classic adventure film starring Harrison Ford as Dr. Indiana Jones made its debut in the summer of 1981.  This iconic tune is instantly recognizable today. STAFF PICKS:I Missed Again  by Phil CollinsRob's staff pick is from “Face Value,” Phil Collins' debut solo album.  The original name of the song was "I miss you, babe," but the band convinced him to change the name and lighten it up.  "Would you say if I was wasting my time or did I miss again?  ...I think I missed again."All Those Years Ago by George HarrisonThis tribute to John Lennon was originally intended as a song for Ringo Starr, but George Harrison brought it back to himself after the death of Lennon the previous winter.  Brian brings us his favorite Beatle.  Ringo, John and Linda McCartney played on this song, the first time they all appeared on a song together since 1970. Snowblind   by StyxBruce's staff pick features baritone James Young and tenor Tommy Shaw trading lead singer duties in this song about the dangers of cocaine.  It also created a stir when some groups insisted that there were backward masking messages from the devil embedded in the track.  This upset the band, who would make an entire concept album about censorship with their next effort, “Kilroy Was Here.”Nether Street  by BodastWayne finishes us off with a song recorded by a prog rock group that broke up in 1969 when guitarist Steve Howe joined Yes.  You'll recognize the riff because it is embedded in Yes's “Starship Trooper.”  The album was not released until June 1981. LAUGH TRACK:The Spanish Inquisition by Mel BrooksThe comedy “History of the World, Part I” by Mel Brooks brought us one of the most politically incorrect musical numbers ever penned.  "The Inquisition! What a show!"

Today we decided to just go with the flow; starting the conversation with power ballads & how they typically weren’t the best representation of a band but conversely were often the band’s biggest hit. Let us know at ThisTimeWith.com/talk EPISODE #70: How Movie Theatres are Reopening Safely with Sarah Van Lange, Executive Director of Communications, Community and Social at Cineplex - August 3, 2020 MAILBAGBrady says, Hey guys just want to say I enjoyed your recent episode of you guys talking about the Superman Black Suit and the Snyder Cut. I know you guys were curious as to how much Whedon reshot the film and I wanted to help clarify that. As you know Zack Snyder has not seen the theatrical cut but he has stated that you only seen about 10-20% of his footage while the rest of it is Joss Whedon. When Whedon came on board he wrote 80 pages of new script material. So that's about an 1 hour and 20 minutes of new footage that he shot in a 2 hour movie with credits that was mandated by WB. So already that shows you how different the film is. The reason Whedon didn't get credit for directing is cause the DGA rules state that a director who films 90% of principal photography gets sole credit no matter what. Zack Snyder filmed 100% of principal photography so that's why his name is in the theatrical cut. So yes this movie is going to be an entirely different from the Whedon version as well as the version he shot. That's why they are throwing so much money to basically redo it from the ground up. So things like the Russian family and the parademons smelling fear from the Batman scene are not in the Snyder Cut. Sorry for the long message but just wanted to give you that information. Thanks again guys for all you do :) ANNOUNCEMENTSCOMMENTARIES: Game Night, Sicario, and Spider-Man (2002) NOW AVAILABLE ON THE MOVIE PODCAST FEED!CATCH UP: Black Lives Matter, Zack Snyder's Justice League ‘Snyder Cut' Coming to HBO Max in 2021 and Interview with Kevin Lima, Director of A Goofy Movie, Tarzan, and Enchanted and more!CHECK OUT: The Last of Us Part II Spoilercast AVAILABLE NOW! NEWSUniversal And AMC Reach Agreement For Mere 17-Day Theatrical Window - Scott Mendelson / ForbesSix Movie Business Questions After Universal and AMC's Historic Deal - Brent Lang, Rebecca Rubin, Matt Donnelly / VarietyLeonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way Inks First-Look Deal With Apple - Nellie Andreeva / Deadline‘Tenet' Will Release Internationally in August Ahead of U.S. Debut - Rebecca Rubin / VarietyWhy Comic-Con ‘At Home' Was a Bust - Adam B. Dennis DeYoung is a crazy person. He created the concept album/ rock-opera "Kilroy Was Here," which was a half-baked idea that essentially caused Tommy Shaw to quit the band. It's easy to see why. This song and, likely the entire album, was garbage. He was like a non-talented Jim Steinman/ Billy Joel/ Jenna Maroney hybrid.. What on Earth does "Modren man," mean? Why on earth does he pronounce "Mannequin," like that? He's not a hero, he's not a savior, but he definitely IS a murderer who will save you heroically. Kilroy is also possibly the most polite murderer ever. We also discuss what it is that makes one human, and coin a new type of irony; Accidental Irony. Get ready to have this garbage trapped in your ear holes for the next week. There's also a touch of dog-murder. Stay classy, Decomposition! Part 1: Background The two chums discuss the storyline of this concept album and list a few of the experiences and encounters that led bandleader Dennis De Young to create the world of Robert Oran Charles Kilroy and his nemesis Dr. Righteous.  And of course, no conversation can be had on the subject of Styx in the early 80's without mentioning all the juicy conflict and turmoil that was going on behind the scenes.  Part 2: Personal History Was this the first Styx album owned by each of the friends?  Who was the mysterious school teacher that sparked Beil's interest in the band?  And can you find Brian's karaoke standby song on this album? Part 3: Track by Track The lads take a listen to side one of "Kilroy" and discuss each song in just the kind of detail that will make a Styx fan want to rebel against the Majority for Musical Morality!  Enjoy commentary and gain invaluable insight into ...   Mr. Roboto Cold War Don't Let It End High Time   Watch the videos we discuss at:   Mr. Roboto : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzzZkkiJMv8 Read more at http://permanentrecordpodcast.com

HAHAHAHAHA! Well, don’t get me wrong I had to suffer through it too, but still HAHAHAHAHAHA! This week I picked Styx’s 1983 back-masked classic Kilroy Was Here as my torture device, err, album to listen to. You all remember Killroy Was Here right? It spawned the huge hit Mr. Roboto a song that has aged as well as a yogurt cup left out in the sun. I highly recommend everyone take a listen. Buy "Kilroy Was Here" on Amazon A Few Minutes With This week we did something different for A Few Minutes With. Instead of watching a music video, we watched the 10 minute long mini-movie Styx opened their shows with on the tour supporting Kilroy Was Here. Ok, now obviously I was fucking around when I encouraged you guys to listen to the album, but I AM NOT when I tell you to watch this movie. It is Grade A unintentional humor. A Current Affair Ryan picked Do You by Spoon for A Current Affair. Coming Up Up Next-We celebrate the return of Dad Kevin with the ultimate Dad album, Sukirae-by father/son duo Tweedy. See you around

“So that’s how it’s gonna be”–Kevin (probably what he is gonna say) Once upon a time, there were three long time friends that decided to record a very opinionated music oriented podcast. Then one day, “Dad” went on vacation and “Little Brother” and “Other Dude” decided to “fuck shit up”…and “Producer Mark” a.k.a. “The Adult” let them run amok (Thanks Producer Mark, or should I thank your “Cocktails”). Ok, that is getting tedious. Basically Kevin went on vacation, and Phil Ajjarapu joined Ryan and Mark and myself in a spirited discussion of the Ramone’s third album Rocket to Russia…A fine time was had by all. Purchase "Rocket To Russia" on Amazon.com A Few Minutes With & A Current Affair But then it got a little more “Please tell Mom not to listen to this Episode-y”. Phil was (kinda) coerced into picking Smell Yo Dick for the video in “A Few Minutes With”…and I had already said I was picking War on Drugs:Suck My Cock by Sun Kil Moon for “A Current Affair”, so all of a sudden it was like taking a corner in a dune buggy and then the dune buggy stalls out and tips over. But just like I would imagine that everyone riding in said buggy would crawl out laughing, so did we (until Chris Cox and Kevin Newsum hear the show). Coming Up You will experience the brilliance of Kilroy Was Here by Styx. Do I hear a Mr. Roboto chant building???

Derby County Football Club are handing out free “E” cigarettes to their fans - designed to prevent youngsters starting to smoke….I’m not quite sure how they work this one out….I don’t know much about these electronic ciggies but I do know they are expensive and they contain nicotine…seem a strange exercise to me. Sad to hear of the recent death of the Disc Jockey/Broadcaster, David Jacobs….he’s been around virtually all my life…I remember him in “Journey Into Space” on the wireless in the early 50’…..half seven to eight…Monday nights…I could stay up for that one….then there was Juke Box Jury etc…..we are all getting old. ”Kilroy was here” was an expression which was written everywhere during the war….I read an article on who he actually was….his name was James Kilroy from Massachusetts and apparently he worked in an aircraft factory and checked that the correct amount of bolts were put in place…he would do this by initialling the job…but the workers used to rub out the initials and get them checked again by someone else…thus doubling their wages…so Kilroy started adding in big block letters “KILROY WAS HERE”….this became a phrase which caught on and was used by American soldiers who would write it in all the places their battles took them…good stuff eh? The Savile Saga marches on…Dave Lee Travis…Rolph Harris and some bloke off Coronation Street…….all tried and convicted by the press….without any proof of course….to show how wonderful our legal system is they have just found a bloke who murdered a girl 13 years ago by matching his DNA….that is after the guy who was originally accused served 6 years….it really does need sorting. Blackpool have switched on the famous lights….inviting famous celebs to be involved…and lost a packet. Firstly, The Script were supposed to be headlining but dropped out because of a family problem…so Gary Barlowe stepped in…and to give him his due he wanted his fee to be paid to Children in Need…also included was Eliza Doolittle and buffoon Jonathon Ross who had the honour of switching on the lights ……however it was decided to charge 10 quid to see this…….there were not many takers….total cost 500 grand…total income 300 grand…OOPS…..lesson learnt I think.
