Critical minerals are required for the manufacturing of electronics, aerospace equipment, medical devices, and renewable energy technologies, making them essential for a country's economic and national security. These materials have been at the center of China's domestic and foreign policy for many decades, and China's ability to integrate internal industrial policies with foreign trade and investment policies has allowed them to gain dominance in the market. Meanwhile, the US has lagged behind China in terms of both access to and processing technology of critical minerals. The country has been heavily dependent on China for its critical minerals and struggles to find an alternative supplier.China's announcement to impose export restrictions on seven rare earth elements on April 4th has opened many conversations surrounding critical minerals, especially regarding the US and its supply chain vulnerabilities. What has China done to achieve their global dominance in the critical minerals sector, and what can the US do to address the overdependence issue they are facing today? To answer these questions and more, host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Gracelin Baskaran, the director of the Critical Minerals Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. She is a mining economist whose area of expertise is critical minerals and trade. Timestamps[00:00] Start[02:13] US Dependencies on Rare Earths and Critical Minerals[03:51] Sourcing from Latin America, Africa, and Asia[06:28] Environmental Harm from Mining and Processing[08:11] Deliberate Suppression of the Price of Rare Earths in the Market[11:06] Chinese Exports Restrictions on Seven Rare Earth Elements[14:08] US Administrations' Approaches to Critical Minerals Vulnerability[20:02] 2010 Fishing Boat Accident and Japan's Response [24:00] What might China do moving forward? [27:42] Timeframe for the US to Catch Up to China

International Graphite (ASX: IG6) has completed successful purification test-work on graphite from its Springdale Graphite Project in Western Australia. The test-work, coordinated by Japan's Marubeni Corporation, achieved total graphitic carbon (TGC) purity of up to 99.97%, meeting lithium-ion battery anode specifications. The bench-scale program used graphite concentrates from drilling and bulk concentrate extraction conducted in 2023. Further purification test-work is planned. Marubeni, one of the world's largest integrated trading and investment conglomerates, is seeking to expand its access to critical minerals, including graphite, to support Japan's battery and motor vehicle manufacturing industries. Representatives from Marubeni recently visited the Springdale Graphite Project and the Collie Graphite Processing and R&D Facility to progress discussions on collaboration under the existing non-binding memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the companies. This MoU covers potential graphite supply and financial support for International Graphite's mine-to-market strategy. International Graphite stated that partnering with Marubeni strengthens confidence in its assets and development strategy. The company emphasised that Japan's battery industry required new sources of graphite, and IG6 offered a secure and reliable Australian supply. #InternationalGraphite, #Marubeni, #Graphite, #BatteryMaterials, #LithiumIon, #GraphitePurification, #SpringdaleGraphite, #CollieGraphite, #CriticalMinerals, #Mining, #AustraliaMining, #BatteryIndustry, #GraphiteProcessing, #ElectricVehicles, #EVBatteries, #MineralResources, #JapanIndustry, #GraphiteSupply, #MiningTechnology, #BatteryManufacturing

EYE on NPI - STMicroelectronics' AEK-POW-BMS63EN Battery Management System Module

This week's EYE ON NPI is a part of a balanced breakfast, wait no we mean a balanced battery pack! It's STMicroelectronics' AEK-POW-BMS63EN Battery Management System Module (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/aek-pow-bms63en-battery-management-system-module) featuring the L9963E automotive multicell battery monitoring and balancing IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/q4jw21t1). This chip brings automotive-grade battery management to any product designer, at a great price, so you can keep your batteries monitored and balanced for a safe and long usage life. All cars have batteries, and if you have a internal combustion engine car, you're probably familiar with the 12V lead acid battery (https://www.diehard.com/vehicle-batteries/) that needs replacing every 5-10 years, these batteries do not power the moving car itself, just the lights, stereo, electrical system and the spark plugs needed to get the engine running. These batteries are pretty simple, there are two big lugs, a ground and a +12V, inside is 6 series Lead Acid cells, of 2V nominal each. The battery is charged by the engine, and while you don't want to over or under-charge lead-acid batteries are pretty forgiving. In EV electric vehicles, the batteries have to have much higher energy density (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Energy_density) so they use Lithium Ion cells, often '18650' cylindrical cells. These are connected in long series strings, to provide high voltages and then parallelized to give high currents. The same batteries are also used in e-scooters, e-skateboards and other micro-mobility devices, they're very low cost, and packs are easy to make. BUT, Lithium-based batteries, as part of the high energy density, have a lower life and are more sensitive to charge and discharge cycles. One of the things we have to worry about is keeping the batteries balanced. That means that we have to monitor each cell in the string carefully to make sure the state of charge matches the rest. The ST L9963E does this in two ways (https://www.digikey.com/short/q4jw21t1), first is per-cell voltage monitoring, and also per-string current monitoring. Once each cell's state of charge is known, internal or external FETs can be used to shunt current from each cell during the charge cycle, with the goal of bringing the cells back into balance at the cost of charge rate because now we're going to charge every cell as slow as the 'worst' cell. However, this keeps the system safe from overcharging, and is a lot less expensive/complex than active balancing. Since this chip is fairly complex, having a ready-to-go eval board that is already set up with the isolated SPI interface is a worthy investment. You can get started fast and just integrate the AEK-POW-BMS63EN directly into your prototype while you work out your battery management system. The board has USB-like ports on either side but these are actually two-wire isolated SPI, which protects your low-voltage microcontroller or computer from possibly getting zapped by the 48V+ battery. You can use USB A-A cables, since the pinout will work fine, but just be aware you can't plug it into your computer. To connect the opposite side to your micro, you'll also need to pick up a de-isolator AEK-COM-ISOSPI1 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/AEK-COM-ISOSPI1/19721659). Finally you'll need to write the SPI interface library for managing the battery. We found one published L9963E library that might get you started (https://github.com/squadracorsepolito/L9963E_lib) - written by the Squadra Corse student Formula SAE teams. (https://squadracorsepolito.com/) If you have a project with large batteries and you want an automotive-grade battery management system, the L9963E automotive multicell battery monitoring and balancing IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/q4jw21t1) and matching Evaluation Board (https://www.digikey.com/short/c00jq224) will make it easy to get started. And best of all, both are in stock right now for purchase at DigiKey! Place your order today and your order will ship in moments, so you can get started with battery management by tomorrow afternoon.

So what if we have terawatts of renewables? Nothing matters unless we can store the energy generated and re-use it later. That's the challenge being thrown at all the players in the energy storage industry. But developing a battery that stores 2-5 hours of energy doesn't cut it anymore. The only word that matters is "Long-Term". Join us in a scintillating discussion with Jorg Heinemann, Chief Executive Officer at Enervenue as we discuss the world's most durable long-term battery technology invented, why it's economics matter and why it is the underdog to Lithium Ion!Host: Chris Sass and Jeff McAulay Additional Reads: Enervenue: https://enervenue.com/  Enervenue Energy Storage Vessel Datasheet: https://enervenue.wpenginepowered.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/esv-4-datasheet.pdf

Additionally, the company boasts strategic land positions in Canada's Northwest Territories amidst a rising wave of lithium pegmatite exploration. In positioning itself to supply the urgent lithium demand in Asian and North American electric vehicle supply chains, Lithium ION Energy has accumulated over 100,000 hectares of prospective lithium real estate. With disciplined exploration and a focus on capital efficiency, strategic partnerships offer strong potential to unlock significant value across the company's asset portfolio over the coming 12-18 months.Flagship Mongolia Assets Offering Leveraged ExposureLithium ION Energy prioritized Mongolia's lithium potential early, recognizing vast tracts of unexplored territory, rapidly expanding infrastructure, and China's proximity as an ideal consumer. The company has since outlined significant lithium mineralization at its two projects - the 20,000-hectare Urgakh Naran brine project and 81,000-hectare Baavhai Uul brine project. As first movers in the country, unlocking value hinges on validation and strategic partnerships. Lithium ION Energy has suggested that reviews by established lithium producers could accelerate confidence and development. Government entities from China, France, and India have all recently shown interest in Mongolia's mineral potential as demand soars.Strategic Acquisitions in Canada Offering Consolidation PotentialIn Canada, Lithium ION Energy has made strategic land acquisitions in the Northwest Territories, where lithium pegmatite exploration is accelerating rapidly. The company holds the 5,798 hectare Bliss Lake property, located 10km from Yellowknife and positioned amongst peers now drilling out deposits. It also has the 900 hectare Little Nahanni project neighboring an active lithium discovery.Pathways to Unlocking ValueIn Mongolia, validation from lithium experts and potential strategic corporate or government partnerships could transform market perceptions and valuations. Proving out the immense potential by systematically derisking assets likely paves the fastest avenue for shareholders. In Canada, positive early sampling and reconnaissance drilling has potential to elevate Lithium ION Energy amongst the numerous neighboring explorers vying for attention. However, the primary focus remains advancing the flagship Mongolia assets where scale and first mover status persists. For investors, Lithium ION Energy provides an intriguing leveraged play on proving up Mongolia's lithium potential, while maintaining strategic options in Canada. The company's vast lithium-focused property portfolio, when combined with the structurally tight backdrop for battery metals, leaves tremendous shareholder upside on offer through exploration success and new partnerships aimed at elevating these assets up the value curve.—View Lithium ION Energy's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/lithium-ion-energySign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

It's actually the irradiance that the area receives on an annual basis is kind of how the industry works off of. And there are specific maps. So, for instance, Phoenix, which is way higher than the equator, right, is going to get way more sun than, let's say, Panama City, right? And that's more of a function of cloud cover and moisture in the air than it is, you know, anything else. There are some industries that are so energy intensive that solar wind and battery don't make sense as their own unit, but they can very easily create that energy that can be used. Everybody resists change, right? That's kind of human nature. And we need to learn how to embrace change. For some reason, our industry has gotten a little bit more politicized, so that change seems to be a little bit more controversial. Nobody was screaming and yelling when we went from 2G to 3G, and 3G to 4G.
