Bill Crews speaks with legendary Australian singer-songwriter John Schumann to reflect on the enduring legacy of his Vietnam War anthem, "I was only 19," and his continued commitment to veteran advocacy. The conversation shifts to Schumann’s recent work with The Vagabond Crew, specifically the powerful new song "Fishing Net in the Rain," which honours the memory of sailor David Finney and aims to humanise the findings of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide. Through a blend of musical history and social activism, Schumann discusses the importance of authentic Australian storytelling and the critical need for systemic change within the Australian Defence Force to protect the mental health of those who serve.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this powerful episode of the Dead America Podcast, host Ed Watters speaks with Garret Biss, retired Marine Corps pilot, recovery coach, TEDx speaker, and advocate for veterans navigating the difficult transition from military to civilian life. Garret brings clarity to the often misunderstood crisis facing veterans today, explaining why the true veteran death toll may reach 44 per day when accounting for overdoses, high risk behaviors, and indirect self harm rooted in emotional pain. Garret describes the unspoken trauma of transition, where the loss of identity, belonging, purpose, and meaning can be as destabilizing as combat itself. He explains how meaning increases a person's capacity to endure suffering—and how its absence can leave veterans vulnerable to depression, addiction, and emotional numbing. The conversation explores the civilian–veteran disconnect, nonprofit messaging that unintentionally labels veterans as “broken,” and military cultural norms that discourage help seeking by glorifying endurance and comparison. Listeners will learn about: • Why younger/post 9/11 veterans often feel disconnected from traditional groups like the VFW • How survival state thinking affects reintegration and treatment outcomes • The unique challenges of justice involved veterans, a high risk subset needing specialized support • The importance of nonprofit collaboration to improve measurable results • Garret's TEDx practices: Be the connection, express your truth, seek more joy • Boundaries, self worth, and Ed's “muddy shoe life” metaphor for shedding harmful influences Garret closes with a message of hope: every person is lovable, worthy of peace, and capable of healing. He shares a free resource, The Warrior Reset, offering four daily self care practices in under 15 minutes at thewarriorreset.com, and invites listeners to connect with him at garretbiss.com and on LinkedIn. Magnus Johnson is a former Green Beret, Bronze Star recipient, and co-founder of Mission 22, a national nonprofit dedicated to ending the veteran suicide epidemic. He has spent his life studying what breaks men and what builds them, first on the battlefield, then in the long, often invisible struggle of coming home. After leaving the military, Johnson faced what so many veterans face: the disorienting work of rebuilding identity outside the uniform. That journey, through art, mindfulness, community, and faith, became the foundation for everything he has built. This includes Mission 22's Recovery + Resiliency program, designed to help veterans transform trauma into Post Traumatic Growth. Send a textThis one isn't hype. It isn't fun. It matters.Aaron goes solo to talk about something we've hit since day one: veteran suicide. Since 2001, more veterans have died by suicide than were killed in combat during GWOT. Let that sink in.He breaks down the rising numbers, the mental toll of Air Force Special Warfare and special operations, and why “mental armor” has to be built before you ever step into the fight. You train your body for the pipeline. You better train your mind for what comes after.Aaron shares his own story as a suicide survivor, talks about sobriety, therapy, and why being intrusive with your friends might save their life. This is about insulating, not isolating. It's about asking the uncomfortable question. Coming home was supposed to be the safe part. For the 1st Battalion 17th Infantry, it did not work out that way. They lost 22 soldiers during their 2009 to 2010 Afghanistan deployment, then as many more after returning home. At one funeral, a soldier finally said what many were thinking: "When is someone going to do something about this?" That question pushed former platoon leader Adam Swift to start searching for an answer in the middle of the night, which led him to The Independence Fund and its unit retreat program, Operation Resilience. Scott sits down with Adam and Independence Fund Deputy Chief of Operations Steven Rozina to hear how Operation Resilience brings entire units back together for a long weekend. Flights are covered, the veteran pays nothing, and the schedule blends fun sober events like NASCAR and hockey with long, guided clinical sessions. Units literally map out their deployment, from pre-mob through the worst days downrange and into life back home, finally talking through firefights, IED blasts, and moral injuries they have carried alone for years. Adam shares what it was like to watch brothers he had not seen in 15 years walk out of the hotel elevators, and how The Independence Fund quietly recreated the teepee memorial from their FOB so the unit could honor their fallen around a final-night bonfire. You will also hear exactly how to get your own unit considered for Operation Resilience and why you do not need to be in command to step up and start the process. Army veteran Angie Peacock survived Iraq in 2003, only to become a prisoner of psychiatric torture. Between VA and civilian psychiatrists, she was prescribed 18 psychiatric drugs at once, then cold-turkeyed off benzodiazepines—leaving her unable to walk for 2.5 years and suicidal for three straight years. After losing 20 years to psychiatric "treatment," Angie escaped and has since helped over 1,000 people navigate psychiatric drug withdrawal. In this explosive conversation, she exposes how both military and civilian psychiatry systematically poison patients, why asking for help destroyed her military career, and delivers a radical truth: the mental health system isn't broken—it's designed to create lifelong patients. For anyone trapped in psychiatric dependency or questioning their "treatment resistant" label, this episode proves you're not crazy. In this episode of the Defence Connect Podcast, host Bethany Alvaro speaks with Isaac Ohlin, general manager of policy and services at RSL NSW, about the establishment of the Defence and Veterans' Service Commission – launched on 29 September 2025 in response to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide (2021). The pair discuss the commission's purpose, challenges and impact on Australia's defence and veteran communities, including: The commission's role in providing independent oversight of the government's response to more than 100 royal commission recommendations. The urgency of addressing veteran suicide, with over 1,800 deaths since 1997, and the need for transparent, systemic reform. Barriers to timely action, including the complexity and sensitivity of suicide prevention within the defence ecosystem. The importance of cultural and systemic change within the ADF to promote help-seeking behaviour and improve wellbeing. The critical transition period for veterans leaving service – identifying gaps in support, responsibility between Defence and the Department of Veterans' Affairs, and the role of ex-service and community organisations in bridging those gaps. Measures of success for the commission, such as progress on recommendations, stakeholder engagement and, ultimately, a reduction in suicidality rates. Ways the broader community and employers can support veterans through understanding, inclusion and employment opportunities. Ohlin concludes that while the commission's creation is a positive and necessary step, "the hard work is still ahead", requiring collaboration across government, ex-service organisations and the wider public to deliver meaningful change. Want to be a guest or know someone would be a great fit? I am looking for military vets, active duty, military brats, veteran service orgs or anyone in the fitness industryThe number that stops us in our tracks: every 11 minutes, a life is lost to suicide in the United States. That reality fuels this deep, practical conversation with Tony DeMeio—coach, entrepreneur, media producer, and the founder of Helping Heroes USA—about what actually helps veterans, first responders, and their families when the weight feels unbearable. Tony didn't wear the uniform, and that became a strength. Decades of listening—on bikes, in workshops, and across thousands of interviews—taught him how to earn trust without trying to “one‑up” someone's story, and how compassion plus attention can interrupt a deadly spiral. We trace Tony's winding path from UCLA's Rose Bowl win to building Duraflex Sports Products and beyond, and we land where his work matters most: suicide prevention strategies anyone can learn and use. You'll hear how isolation quietly sets the stage, why warning signs like giving away cherished items or sudden financial organizing can signal acute risk, and how access to firearms changes outcomes. We get specific about reducing means, rallying the right mix of friends and peers, and starting tough conversations with presence instead of judgment. Tony also shares how faith and a one‑day‑at‑a‑time mindset help people move through moments that feel impossible, and why the “victim–persecutor–rescuer” loop keeps so many stuck. If you've ever thought “I don't know what to say,” this episode offers a better script—and the confidence to use it. We talk about building “support angels,” recognizing risk factors like grief, job loss, divorce, and PTSD, and creating simple, reliable routines that pull people out of isolation. Our goal is clear: fewer families haunted by “If I had only known.” Explore free workshops and resources at helpingheroesusa.org and SilentBattle.life, share this with someone who checks in on others, and help us grow a community that listens first. In this episode we have the honor of sitting down with Australian researcher, Ms. Carolyn Heward, lead author of “A Scoping Review of Military Culture, Military Identity, and Mental Health Outcomes in Military Personnel”. Listen in as we discuss the complexity of military culture's impact on military identity and its effect on mental health. We'll dig into the Military Identity Model (MIM) and types of identities such as loyal, warrior, hidden and disrupted. But most importantly we'll consider the clinical benefits of including military identity into case formulation, treatment planning and EBP work. As Heward says “identity work is clinical work” and we couldn't agree more. Carolyn Heward is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Psychology at James Cook University in Townsville, Queensland, Australia, where she teaches in the Master of Psychology (Clinical) program while conducting research on military identity construction and its implications for psychological wellbeing. As a Clinical Psychologist with extensive experience working with the Australian Defence Force (ADF), she brings valuable insights to the intersection of military culture and mental health, particularly through her perspective that identity work is fundamental to clinical practice. Her recent scoping review on military culture, identity, and mental health has contributed to understanding the unique challenges faced by service members, while her current doctoral research explores the construction of military identity within the ADF and its clinical implications. Drawing from her clinical experience, Carolyn's work focuses on developing integrated approaches to clinical psychology that move beyond cultural formulations to address individual identity construction. She has also contributed to public discourse on military mental health through The Conversation, publishing articles on military identity and providing analysis of the Australian Government's response to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide.Resources mentioned in this episode: Carolyn Heward, Wendy Li, Ylona Chun Tie, Pippa Waterworth, A Scoping Review of Military Culture, Military Identity, and Mental Health Outcomes in Military Personnel, Military Medicine, Volume 189, Issue 11-12, November/December 2024, Pages e2382–e2393, https://doi.org/10.1093/milmed/usae276Practical for Your Practice voice mail: speakpipe.com/cdpp4pPractical for Your Practice email: cdp-podcast-ggg@usuhs.edu
