Ken Rea's Outstanding Actor Masterclass About Ken: Professor Ken Rea is a theatre director, internationally acclaimed acting teacher, and author of the bestselling book, The Outstanding Actor, Seven Keys to Success Starting out in New Zealand, he worked with the country's leading theatres and in television drama. In 1973 he formed the Living Theatre Troupe, one of New Zealand's most important experimental companies. He went on to study theatre in China, Japan, and India, then moved to Europe, where he studied with leading European teachers. As Professor of Theatre at the renowned Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Ken has trained some of Britain's top actors and film stars, including EWAN MCGREGOR, LILY JAMES, JOSEPH FIENNES, DOMINIC WEST, JODIE WHITTAKER, DAMIAN LEWIS, HAYLEY ATWELL, RHYS IFANS, MICHELLE DOCKERY, FREDDIE FOX, SIMON RUSSELL BEALE, ORLANDO BLOOM, PAAPA ESSIEDU, and DANIEL CRAIG. Ken is in regular demand internationally and has previously taught at the national drama academies of China, India, New Zealand, and Italy, and he has given courses in the UK, Canada, Indonesia, Germany, USA, and Singapore. As a journalist, he has been a regular feature writer for The Times and was for 15 years a theatre critic for The Guardian. As a public speaker, Ken has given many large-scale presentations in the worlds of business and the arts. He also trains top executives throughout Europe in presentation skills and personal impact. He is about to launch his major online course: Ken Rea Teaches Acting.  How do I get better work? And it's a really interesting question so you don't feel stuck in your career. Ask yourself what would that next level look like for you. Let's think about the acting itself. What would that look like? And so that immediately gives you a target. I want to be like this. So you know where you're going. So the next question to ask yourself is, where do you feel you are now? Which then shows you the gap between now where you are and there where you want to be. Then the next question you could ask yourself is, what would you like to have more of in your work?  You know, for example, would you like to have more personality in your acting, more sense of danger in your acting, more gravitas, more presence, more charisma, more twinkle in the eye, more playfulness? And that immediately is going to take you out of your comfort zone. Progress happens not inside that comfort zone, but just outside it. That's the life of an actor, to be comfortable being uncomfortable. And that's your life as an actor, constantly taking risks, working outside that comfort zone.  How can you be out of your comfort zone and still enjoy that, you know, and love performing? If you want to be more playful, more twinkle in the eye, more dangerous, what is stopping you from bringing that into the work that's stopping you from being out of your comfort zone? And what can you do about that? It takes a certain amount of comfortability in being yourself to know that you can go emotionally to a specific place and also know and play there, and it is out of your comfort zone and in a danger zone and in a scary zone, a risk zone, as you put it, but also always knowing that you have that anchor in yourself that you are able to handle it. Am I going to be good enough? Will I be found out? And I think as you get older, you make it about them, not about you. I find what works for me is, is to get the right mindset. It's about them, the energy going outward and forward with the focus on them, on what I can bring to them. Prepare meticulously. Outstanding Actor So I think the preparation is important and the mindset.  You know, you can coach yourself a lot these days just by trying things out on your laptop, on your phone, recording, and playing it back. Start to experiment with things. Be very specific in your choices.  Using contrary action as an actor. And it helps get that kind of volcano principle, you know, just the rumbling underneath the volcano before it erupts. Before it explodes, which creates, as you mentioned before, a sense of danger.  Danger, I tend to think of that as you set up a tension between yourself, the actor, and the audience, thinking, "Oh, wow, where's she going with this? What's going to happen next?" Because audiences love to be thrilled and surprised, don't they? We lose that sense of playfulness that is the source of our charm, our creativity, and our imagination in adult life. And so a lot of the journey of the actor is to go back the wheel turns full circle back to that, to find at the adult age. I think that it's more fun to play the game if you know that you are capable and can handle whatever circumstance comes your way in life.  Knowing you are capable, I think, is such an important part of being a good actor because you need to feel safe. So a good question to ask yourself then is okay, if there is fear, what is the source of the fear? Ken's New Exercise  Ken's Secret Weapon Exercise And I think a lot is about paring away the clutter. I use that phrase a lot, you know, just to find a simplicity and an energy that comes from a calm center but is fully concentrated. As the actor, you play with the other actor, but you're also playing with the audience and have to make sure they're enjoying being there.

Eileen O'Higgins recently joined host Elias in the cave! You can see Eileen as Kathleen McCarty on EPIX 'Billy The Kid'. Eileen O'Higgins is a Northern Irish actress. She trained at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Her breakthrough role was playing a young pregnant woman in the play Hold Your Tongue, Hold Your Dead which led to a supporting role in the film Brooklyn (2015) and Mary Queen of Scots. Billy The Kid stars British actor Tom Blyth (The Gilded Age, Benediction) and Daniel Webber (The Dirt, Escape From Pretoria), and is written by Vikings and The Tudors creator Michael Hirst. The eight-episode season comprised of hour-long episodes is an epic romantic adventure based on the life of famous American outlaw Billy the Kid (Blyth), also known as William H. Bonney — from his humble Irish roots, to his early days as a cowboy and gunslinger in the American frontier, to his pivotal role in the Lincoln County War and beyond. Webber will play Jesse Evans, another famous outlaw and leader of the Seven Rivers Gang. When they meet, Jesse has already embraced a life of crime: robbing stores and cattle rustling. Billy is attracted to his wild and reckless character and becomes Billy's doppelganger of sorts — his shadow self, forever inviting him over to the dark side of life. In this series of podcasts, Seattle Opera Dramaturg Jonathan Dean gives listeners a taste of nine different types of traditional opera. Music Drama was the personal solution to the problems of presenting opera in nineteenth-century Europe developed by composer/librettist Richard Wagner, opera’s ultimate mad genius. These long, loud, big works challenge artists, audiences, and the art form itself. Their complex music and unique spins on old stories continue to attract, repel, and provoke all who encounter them. Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde (1865) serves as an example of the genre, as does the Richard Strauss opera Elektra (1909). Musical examples on this podcast drawn from Seattle Opera productions of Lohengrin 1994, conducted by Hermann Michael; Parsifal 2003, conducted by Asher Fisch and starring Stephen Milling; Die Walküre, conducted by Robert Spano, 2005 (starring Jane Eaglen) and 2009; Siegfried, 2013, conducted by Asher Fisch; and Tristan und Isolde (1998, conducted by Armin Jordan and starring Jane Eaglen and Ben Heppner; 2010, conducted by Asher Fisch; opening and English horn solo from the 1966 Bayreuth Festival recording conducted by Karl Böhm; conclusion of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Karajan (Deutsche Gramophon 1977); Elektra, Astrid Varnay and Leonie Rysanek with the orchestra of West German Radio conducted by Richard Kraus (Melodram 1953). Stay tuned for another podcast introducing another kind of opera next week!

Ann Sloboda is Head of Music Therapy at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. She is a registered psychoanalyst (British Psychoanalytic Council) and music therapist (HCPC). She studied music at Oxford University, and qualified as a music therapist from GSMD in 1985. Between 1985 and 2005 she worked as a music therapist in the NHS, in adult learning disability, eating disorders, general and forensic psychiatry. She has undertaken research in music therapy with PTSD. A past chair of the Association of Professional Music Therapists, she was Head of Arts Therapies at West London Mental Health Trust for 10 years. In this interview Luke talked to Ann about her personal development as a music therapist and, later, psychoanalyst, as well as about the development of the training course at the Guildhall School. Ann also encouraged Luke to reflect on some of his own experiences as a trainee, which led to some interesting shared reflections on the nature of training, including personal motivations for embarking on a therapeutic career. Ann discussed her own very particular experience of music therapy as a client, with the pioneering analytic music therapist Mary Priestley.

Patsy Rodenburg divides her time between London, New York and Silves in Portugal.  While London and New York is where she keeps busy, Silves is her place to retreat, write and recharge.  I met Patsy in her farmhouse in Silves - a perfect setting for a conversation about presence. Surrounded by citrus groves and vineyards, with an unobstructed view of the Silves Castle on one side and white storks of the Algarve busily flying to and fro above us, we eventually settled in her kitchen with a cup of tea.  Patsy was completely relaxed when I rearranged her furniture to minimise the echo of her newly renovated house, as if having people armed with huge mics and headphones was a daily occurrence on the farm.   It wasn’t until I looked at her fridge that she set her boundaries. “I’m not switching that off.” she said, smiling. I took a mental note: “This is how you can be warm and firm at the same time.”  Patsy and I sat opposite each other in the least “boomy” part of her house, crammed between her fridge and the kitchen window, when I asked my first question, the one i ask every CultureLab guest. “What were the early cultural influence that shaped you as a person?” Without any hesitation, Patsy replied, “Shakespeare”.  She discovered the great English poet and playwright as a 9-year old girl and her life was never the same since.  Since then, Patsy Rodenburg has become a world expert on teaching voice, speech and presentation skills, initially to actors, but more recently in high profile corporate spheres.  And it’s through her work with Shakespeare that she developed the concept of the Three Circles of Energy that we talk about during the interview.  We also talked about other really big topics - culture, leadership, fairness, service, redemption, love, and women’s voices.   Being in conversation with Patsy, in second circle, was a really powerful and intimate experience. She truly practices what she preaches and I hope that you enjoy this interview as much as I enjoyed spending time with her.  Episode highlights What Shakespeare can teach us about power, love and fairness - and how it can be applied in modern organisations The three circles of energy and why being in second is so important, particularly for leaders Why people lose their presence and live their lives disconnected (and what can be done about that) What enables creativity and high performance in organisations How leaders contribute to creating a healthy culture What great actors, singers and great leaders have in common Lessons Patsy learned while working in high security prisons The transformational practice of self-reflection and facing our own demons Why it’s not possible to think our way of certain situations - and what we should be doing instead Generosity and creating a healthy work environment  Maintaining presence when speaking in public Tips for women to get their voices heard    More about Patsy Rodenburg  Patsy originally trained as an actor but soon moved into voice coaching, fast becoming an associate of the Royal Court Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company, and eventually working as Head of Voice at the Royal National Theatre for 16 years. Her first book, The Right to Speak, was first published by Methuen in 1992 and was re-printed in 2015. Patsy then wrote The Need for Words (Methuen, 1993), The Actor Speaks (Methuen, 1997), and Speaking Shakespeare (Methuen, 2001), the last of which is viewed by the theatrical industry as a seminal work on the performance of Shakespeare. She has worked extensively with actors (including Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Daniel Craig, and Natalie Portman), directors (Trevor Nunn, Richard Eyre, Franco Zeffirelli and Tim Burton) and playwrights (Arthur Miller, Harold Pinter, Samuel Beckett), earning her OBE in 2005 for services to drama. She has also coached extensively for high profile politicians and statesmen. Her extensive experience in examining human interaction on a theatrical level has given her vast insight into the qualities that are required for success in the corporate world, concepts which are best explored in her books, Presence (Penguin, 2007) and Power Presentation (Penguin, 2009). Patsy is based in London but has taught all over the world transforming people from all walks of life, helping them to overcome perceived obstacles by helping them to redefine their presence. She is currently Professor of Text and Poetry at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where she has been for 36 years and is on the board of directors with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Patsy also works extensively in the U.S.A from the Michael Howard Studios in New York. IN THE SHOW Where or how have you felt most alive this week? Sue has had a wonderful day working with a new client who had booked the I Gotta Be Me Intensive Coaching Experience and, because he is an actor, Sue had arranged for the Experience to take place in the iconic Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama – an inspirational venue that Sue has hankered after working in for a little while now!  Sherry has two experiences to share – a Rock ‘n’ Roll wedding where she was keen to continue her exploration of being in flow using dance, and also a fabulous day at her latest Fresh Air Networking event exploring both the beauty of autumn and the creative thinking that being in nature can inspire. (01.42 – 07.26) How have you been challenged? This week we explore Leaning In. What does it mean? Why is it important that we do and how exactly does it help us?  How do we do it – what’s the process?  We share our experience of leaning in, both in our former careers (particularly in the recruitment process) and now in building our businesses.  We discover so many facets to leaning in – the strength in authenticity and self belief, the fear of imposter syndrome, the need for alignment between understanding what we do and what we are capable of, and owning who we really are and who we are becoming.  (07.27 – 35.30) So where are you building momentum right now? As we keep saying, momentum is critical in getting past the Tipping Point!  Sue shares some personal insights from the silence & stillness retreat she attended recently (mentioned in the last episode) and, as a result, is launching the ‘We’re Not F*cking Small’ Tribe, a coaching group for women who are ready to stand out, and are looking to make 2018 an extraordinary year.  Sherry has given up on procrastinating (Imposter Syndrome Be Gone!) and has a confirmed venue and date for launching her City Conversations Network! If you’re in or around London on 29th November – make sure you join her!  (35.31 – 42.12) How have you been inspired this week? Sue’s been inspired by one of the Find Your Flow Challengers, Louise Wiles, who wants to apply her learning and experience from the Flow Challenge to her own community. Louise is an expert in helping expats and their families to thrive abroad, and wants to introduce the model used in the Flow Challenge to her clients because it has such powerful application in managing change and transition. (Sue will be two timing Sherry and appearing on Louise’s podcast early in 2018!) Sherry has had a wonderful time interviewing at a local 6th form school to help students practice their interview skills ahead of making university applications.  She was impressed not only by how articulate the students were in their applications and interviews, but also their individual ability to accept and acknowledge the feedback offered. (42.12 – 46.45) What else or what next? Our big WHAT NEXT this week is our fast approaching on-line conference!  On The Tipping Point LIVE starts on Monday 27th November and runs for two weeks until Friday 8th December.  We have some amazing business women and entrepreneurs joining us to share their personal stories of getting past the tipping point to success in their careers and business.  To join us, sign up here. Eckart Altenmüller: Is Music the Universal “Language” of emotions? The Neurobiology and Psychology of Aesthetic feelings

Neuroaesthetics | Symposium Symposium im ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie, 22.-24. November 2012 In Kooperation und mit Unterstützung der Gemeinnützigen Hertie-Stiftung. Although music is generally acknowledged as a powerful tool for eliciting emotions, little is known concerning the neurobiological basis of these emotions. We investigated the psychological and neurobiological basis of strong emotional responses to music (SEM), leading to shivers down the spine (chills) and changes in heart rate. From previous studies it is known that these SEMs are accompanied by the activation of a brain network that includes areas involved in reward, emotion, and motivation. In order to observe distinct acoustical and music structural elements related to chill reactions, in a series of experiments, on-line emotional self report and psychophysiological data was obtained while participants were listening to music inducing strong emotions and aesthetic feelings. Despite of highly individual emotional reactions towards music, some interindividually constant characteristics of music eliciting chill responses can be found. Chills were much more frequent in previously known music and in familiar music stiles. Furthermore, distinct musical events frequently caused strong emotional responses, especially when violating expectancies. These results demonstrate that strong emotional responses are not only related to the psychoacoustic properties of the respective pieces of music, but furthermore to biographical memories, personality traits and social environments. Prof. Dr. med. Eckart Altenmüller is a full university professor and medical doctor, and has an active clinical and academic research career. He holds a Masters degree in Classical flute, and a M.D. and Ph.D. degree in Neurology and Neurophysiology. Between 1983 and 1985, he held a postdoctoral position in the department of Clinical Neurophysiology in Freiburg. In this position, he performed research into brain activation during auditory processing of music and learning of fine motor skills, an area in which he has published extensively. He received his clinical training in Neurology at the Department of Neurology at the University of Tübingen between 1985 and 1992, and was appointed Assistant Professor in Neurology in 1992. Since 1994 he is Chair and Director of the Institute of Music Physiology and Musicians’ Medicine at the University of Music Drama and Media in Hannover. He continues research into movement disorders in musicians as well as motor, auditory and sensory learning. He has published more than 120 peer reviewed papers on this topic and received 18 grants from the German Research Foundation (DFG). Since 2005 he is a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences.
