Matthew Fox and Riki Hayashi dive deep into the 2016 Japanese film Shin Godzilla. They explore how this installment in the iconic Godzilla franchise serves as a powerful metaphor for the devastating Fukushima Nuclear Accident of 2011. Join them as they unravel the layers of social commentary and critique woven throughout the film.Key Points:How does Shin Godzilla differ from previous Godzilla movies in its tone and style? Matthew and Riki discuss how the film is shot more like a documentary or mockumentary, emphasizing bureaucratic incompetence and red tape in the face of disaster. What parallels can be drawn between the events in Shin Godzilla and the real-life government response to the Fukushima Nuclear Accident? The hosts examine scenes that mirror the Prime Minister's actions during the crisis and the film's criticism of inadequate evacuation orders.Does Shin Godzilla take a stance on Japan's military and its role in national defense? Matthew and Riki explore the complexities of Japan's pacifist identity post-World War II and debate whether the film suggests a need for a stronger military presence.Other Topics Covered:The meaning behind the title "Shin Godzilla" and its cultural significanceThe absence of the Japanese Emperor in the film and its implicationsThe portrayal of the United States and its role in the movie's conflictThemes of national pride, rebuilding, and civilian ingenuity in the face of adversityComparisons to the more recent film, Godzilla Minus OneShin Godzilla proves to be a thought-provoking and socially relevant addition to the Godzilla franchise. Through its biting satire and poignant metaphors, the film sheds light on the complexities of governmental response to crises and the resilience of the Japanese people.  We've started the conversation. Japan is scarce in critical natural resources and has been heavily dependent on imported energy, so nuclear energy has been a national strategic priority since the 1970s. Japan's power companies had strived to make nuclear power the key to combining environmental conservation with economic growth and energy security, however after a number of disasters, production has been in a sharp decline. The Tokai Nuclear Power Plant was Japan's first commercial plant, but it would also be the location of one of the country's worst nuclear crisis. In this episode, Alex covers Paul Ryan's disingenuous comments about being “Never-Trump-Again.” Ryan claimed to appreciate Trump's record but did not appreciate the losses in 2018, 2020, and 2022. Instead, it would add legitimacy to the “moving-on-from-Trump” movement if someone like Paul Ryan would just say the quiet part out loud — Trump is dangerous! Later, Alex argues that the Hunter Biden investigations that are likely to come may backfire on Republicans and are only an attempt at distracting and deflecting from the nepotism and corruption that plagued Trump's presidency. Finally, Alex discusses troubling reports from the Russian-controlled nuclear plant in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Apparently, heavy shelling out over the weekend has put the facility at high risk of dangerous scenarios.  The International Atomic Energy Agency has voiced concern and called for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine; however, none have occurred.

On Saturday April 26th 1986, the world was given a glimpse of just what Humanity's flirtation with the atom could lead to when the no.4 reactor at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant melted down. It remains the largest nuclear disaster in history being rated at a 7 – the highest number on the International Nuclear Event Scale or INES. Such was the shock and the horror of Chernobyl that perhaps with the exception of the Fukushima accident in 2011, the disaster in 1986 has largely overshadowed the many other nuclear accidents that have occurred in the seventy plus years mankind has harnessed the atom to expand his dominion over this planet. Here, we are going to look at just five incidents that have had political, scientific, military and life-affecting consequences.Episode narrated by Top5sMusic by CO.AG________Our episodes deal with serious and often distressing cases involving serial killers. The tsunami caused by a strong earthquake, which broke into the Fukushima nuclear power plant, damaged the cooling system and was followed by explosions, melting in reactors and a huge release of radiation into water and the atmosphere. Our colleague Ina Strazdiņa talked to Yoshinori Fukushima, Deputy Editor of the newspaper "Mainichi Shimbun".

Dr. Geraldine Thomas is the director of the Chernobyl tissue bank and a Chair in Molecular Pathology at the Faculty of Medicine of Imperial College London. Surprisingly her research on the health impacts of the Chernbyl accident led her towards a pro-nuclear position due to the technologies clear benefits of slowing climate change and saving lives by producing no air pollution. Dr. Thomas shares that contrary to popular belief there is a scientific consensus that the Chernobyl accident has resulted in the deaths of less than 55 people as a result of radiation. This is based on the work of the UN scientific committee on the effects of atomic radiation (UNSCEAR) and the Chernobyl Forum that involved 8 major UN agencies and the participation of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Alternative reports quoting death tolls orders of magnitude higher are methodologically flawed and were sponsored by the European Green party and NGO's like Greenpeace who had an ideological objective and cherry picked evidence to match their hypotheses. Both of them would suffer terrifying radioactive accidents while using the same core of plutonium that would earn a notorious nickname: The Demon Core. A nuclear and radiation accident is defined by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as "an event that has led to significant consequences to people, the environment or the facility." Examples include lethal effects to individuals, radioactive isotope to the environment, or reactor core melt." The prime example of a "major nuclear accident" is one in which a reactor core is damaged and significant amounts of radioactive isotopes are released, such as in the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The impact of nuclear accidents has been a topic of debate since the first nuclear reactors were constructed in 1954, and has been a key factor in public concern about nuclear facilities. Technical measures to reduce the risk of accidents or to minimize the amount of radioactivity released to the environment have been adopted, however human error remains, and "there have been many accidents with varying impacts as well near misses and incidents". As of 2014, there have been more than 100 serious nuclear accidents and incidents from the use of nuclear power. Fifty-seven accidents have occurred since the Chernobyl disaster, and about 60% of all nuclear-related accidents have occurred in the USA. Serious nuclear power plant accidents include the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster (2011), Chernobyl disaster (1986), Three Mile Island accident (1979), and the SL-1 accident (1961). Nuclear power accidents can involve loss of life and large monetary costs for remediation work. Nuclear-powered submarine accidents include the K-19 (1961), K-11 (1965), K-27 (1968), K-140 (1968), K-429 (1970), K-222 (1980), and K-431 (1985). Serious radiation incidents/accidents include the Kyshtym disaster, Windscale fire, radiotherapy accident in Costa Rica,[15] radiotherapy accident in Zaragoza, radiation accident in Morocco, Goiania accident,[18] radiation accident in Mexico City, radiotherapy unit accident in Thailand, and the Mayapuri radiological accident in India.

The nuclear accident at Chernobyl in 1986 was not just a catastrophic event in terms of its effect upon the environment and the health of those who lived nearby. Some claim that the media coverage of the disaster, and particularly that by Radio Liberty, contributed to the introduction of radical reforms within the Soviet Union that changed it forever – and perhaps even hastened its eventual downfall. In this episode, we will assess those claims and show how important Radio Liberty’s place within the Soviet media consumer’s life had become by the Gorbachev era.

There are a variety of opportunities in the Phoenix Real Estate Market for both buyers and sellers. If you're a prospective buyer click here for a full home search, or if you're considering placing your home on the market, get a free home value report, right here. Most Arizonans aren't likely to purchase flood insurance, even after the recent torrential downpours rendered many homes and streets completely flooded and unnaccessible. Although it's not likely to happen again anytime soon, a lot of homeowner's already learned the hard way that flood insurance is not covered in your standard policy. This got us thinking: What other kinds of disasters, that you have no control over, are not covered in standard policies. We compiled a list of 6 different potential hazards that aren't covered by traditional policies, but could lose you a lot of money if they aren't covered.1. MoldMold may be covered in some policies on a limited basis, but it is probably not fully covered. Talk to your agent about what kind of mold coverage you have. 2. Sewer BackupThis is important, as for a small extra fee of $40 or $50, you can add this to your current policy to be protected against a sewer emergency3. SinkholesWhile sinkholes aren't common in AZ, it is required to have a standard sinkhole policy in Florida, where they are much more common.4. TermitesWith termites in Arizona, it's not a matter of if it happens to you, it's a matter of when. Most homeowner policies partially cover termite damage, but may not cover you in all termite related damages. It would be a good idea to check with your insurance agent to make sure you are covered for all types of termite damage.5. Nuclear AccidentsNuclear accidents aren't common occurrences, but if your insurance doesn't cover it, you could be in trouble. There is a plant nearby in the Valley.6. Acts of TerrorismA lot of issues with this kind of coverage came about after the Boston Marathon bombing. If you live in an apartment or condo you may have partial coverage, but you aren't fully covered if an act of terrorism destroys your home. These are all things that you want to talk to your insurance agent about, no matter how minisucle or silly they may seem. Flood insurance in Arizona may have seemed like a bad idea until a few weeks ago. Now we have clients that are spending thousands upon thousands of dollars out of their own pocket, just to restore their homes to normal. If you know anybody in Phoenix that is buying or selling real estate in the next 90 days, please give us a call. We'd be glad to help out!Teaser: Up until a few weeks ago, you probably would have though somebody with flood insurance in Arizona was crazy. Well, who's laughing now? There are actually a lot of things you have no control over that are not covered in your standard homeowner's insurance policy. To see some of the other disasters that you probably aren't covered for, check out our latest video!

It's nearly a year (11 March 2011) since Japan was struck by a huge earthquake and Tsunami. Clouds of radioactive fall out from damaged nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power station spread across heavily populated areas - many kilometres from the plant. The government and power company TEPCO have been heavily criticised for not telling the local population soon enough about what was going on - in many cases people evacuated to areas with higher radiation levels than those they fled. As a result, deep mistrust developed towards government or TEPCO pronouncements on the nuclear incident. In this special one hour edition of Discovery Mariko Oi, visits the Fukushima prefecture to find out what has happened since. She meets scientists working to piece together an accurate picture of the effects of the radioactive fall out, both on the environment and human health. She hears from local community grassroots organisations, many people living in fear of radiation, they argue for a mass clean up operation to reduce radiation levels to zero and further evacuations, especially of children. Mariko examines the current decontamination efforts, which involve removing and disposing of huge quantities of soil and concrete contaminated with caesium 137 – a radioactive isotope which can persist in the environment for 30 years or more. The programme questions whether attempting to remove such contamination is really effective - or even necessary, and contrasts the fears of radiation with the scientific reality.(Image: A journalist watching stricken Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant at Okuma town in Fukushima prefecture.
