Gotham needs therapy, Batman needs a concussion protocol, and we're apparently the idiots qualified to diagnose both. This week the CREEP-O-RAMA crew throws themselves headfirst into Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises (2012) before descending into the rain-soaked crime-noir nightmare of Matt Reeves' The Batman (2022), proving once again that three movie nerds with microphones are significantly more dangerous than The Riddler with a carpet tucker.First up, Christian Bale's Batman spends half the episode accidentally giving Gotham's criminal population lifelong CTE because, remember kids... "NO GUNS." Why shoot a criminal when you can instead launch him face-first into a brick wall at Mach 3 and financially assassinate him with six-figure hospital bills? Meanwhile, Tom Hardy's Bane delivers dialogue so unbelievably poetic that we become convinced he spends every evening alone in a subway bathroom rehearsing villain monologues in the mirror. "You merely adopted the dark..." wasn't improvised—that man practiced it 4,000 times while his henchmen awkwardly waited outside wondering why taking over Gotham was behind schedule.Then it's time for Matt Reeves' The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis,and Colin Farrell, where we ask the truly important questions: Is this a Batman movie? Is it Se7en with bat ears? Is it Zodiac wearing combat boots? Why does Batman introduce himself as "I'm Vengeance" ONE. TIME and the entire city knows about it? We also investigate Batman's astonishing ability to contaminate every crime scene with gloves containing approximately forty seven different criminals' DNA, debate why Gordon thought plugging an anonymous USB drive into a work computer was a solid cybersecurity strategy, question whether Paul Dano's Riddler spent more time solving riddles or fighting with duct tape that folded over on itself and argue over whether that wingsuit was actually a good idea. We're still undecided on that one. By the end of the episode, we've somehow transformed two Batman films into discussions about municipal infrastructure, sports franchises, workplace IT violations, and catastrophic healthcare debt. When The Dark Knight Rises came out in 2012, expectations were sky high. After all, Christopher Nolan had shattered all box office records and blown critics away with The Dark Knight… what would he be doing now to dazzle audiences everywhere?  Maybe it's inevitable that the reception would be mixed. For the first time in his career, a Nolan movie was given generally negative reviews. And while it ultimately made more money worldwide than The Dark Knight did, it didn't become the biggest movie of all time. Earlier that year, in fact, The Avengers had pulled that off, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe's reign had officially begun. Nolan said the only reason he would ever consider making a sequel to The Dark Knight was if he came up with a story that was so good it justified its own existence. So… does The Dark Knight Rises do that? Laci thinks so; Matt doesn't. In this episode, 1-Week Rental takes you behind the scenes of The Dark Knight Rises to give you the story of how Nolan developed this idea along with his collaborator David Goyer and his brother Jonah. Movies are dreams, and directors are like the ultimate dreamweavers, if you think about it. Christopher Nolan certainly thinks so, and in his most autobiographical movie, he has Leonardo DiCaprio play man named Dom Cobb (come on, that's not a real name) who is dressed and styled to look a lot like Christopher Nolan, and he must assemble a team of creatives to help a billionaire in his feud with another billionaire. But actually, it's a movie about uncertainty. No one ever really knows whether they're in a dream, or in the Matrix, or being controlled by a demon. And when you understand that the movie is actually about giving you the experience of living with uncertainty, a lot clicks into place. Or at least it did for Matt. Simon and Rachel speak with the novelist and screenwriter Tom Rob Smith. Tom wrote his first novel, "Child 44", about a serial killer in Soviet Russia, at the age of 26. After publication in 2008, the novel went on to sell over two million copies, with translations in 35 languages. It won the International Thriller Writer Award for Best First Novel, the CWA Ian Fleming Steel Dagger Award, and became the first thriller to be longlisted for the Booker Prize. In 2015 "Child 44" was also turned into a film starring Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman. Tom's other novels include "The Farm", "Cold People" and most recently "Twenty Years Together".
