Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - John 20:1-2, 11-18 - On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, "They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don't know where they put Him." Mary stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the Body of Jesus had been. And they said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken my Lord, and I don't know where they laid Him." When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus there, but did not know it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?" She thought it was the gardener and said to Him, "Sir, if You carried Him away, tell me where you laid Him, and I will take Him." Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to Him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni," which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, "Stop holding on to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to My brothers and tell them, 'I am going to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.'" Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord," and then reported what He told her. Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene Saint Mary, pray for us! Read OnlineMary stayed outside the tomb weeping. And as she wept, she bent over into the tomb and saw two angels in white sitting there, one at the head and one at the feet where the Body of Jesus had been. John 20:11–12Early in His ministry, Jesus cast seven demons out of Mary of Magdala. As a result, she became an exceptionally faithful follower of Jesus. She was most likely one of His followers who provided for Jesus and the disciples out of her own resources as they traveled. She listened to His teachings, witnessed His miracles, was present when He was condemned, stood at the foot of the Cross with Jesus' mother, helped to prepare His body for burial and was the first person recorded in Scripture to whom Jesus appeared after His Resurrection. The Gospel for today's Mass tells the story of Mary going to the tomb early Sunday morning to complete the anointing of Jesus' dead body as He laid in the tomb. But much to her surprise, the tomb was empty. Therefore, she ran to tell the Apostles, which makes Mary Magdalene the first of His followers to witness to the Resurrection. After telling the Apostles, she returned to the tomb with Peter and John; and, after Peter and John left, she remained outside the tomb weeping, as is mentioned in the Gospel passage quoted above.Mary's tears are beautiful. They are an expression of her deep devotion to her Lord. She did not yet understand that He had risen, but her fidelity to Jesus is a testimony to her love. Jesus had restored her dignity. He freed her from the seven demons who tormented her. She most likely had been a sinful woman in the past, but now she was singly devoted to the Savior of the World. The witness of Mary of Magdala is one that should inspire us all. Though few people are possessed by seven demons, we are all tormented in one way or another. We all sin. We all are weak. We all have a past we regret. And we all are invited to do better. Mary's “better” was a life that was given to Jesus with the utmost fidelity. She didn't care if the authorities saw her at the foot of the Cross. If they were to persecute her as a result, it did not matter. She was faithful. She didn't care if the soldiers would have harassed her when she went to the tomb to anoint the body of Jesus—she only thought of that last act of love she could offer Him. And when she saw Jesus risen and thought He was the gardener, she didn't care if He saw her heartbroken and in tears—she only wanted to see the body of her Lord.As a result of her unwavering fidelity, Jesus gave her a gift beyond imagination. He appeared to her, after being resurrected from the dead, and sent her to be an apostle to the Apostles. He sent her to go to the Apostles to tell them that Jesus had risen and that He was preparing to go to His Father in Heaven. Reflect, today, upon the holy soul of this woman. She was a repentant sinner who turned her whole life around. She devoted everything to Jesus and, in return, received even more. In Heaven, Mary Magdalene will forever cling to Jesus and adore His Sacred Heart. May we all strive to imitate her by turning from our own life of sin and becoming unwaveringly faithful to our Lord. My resurrected Lord, You appeared first to Mary of Magdala after Your Resurrection. You now invite her to share in Your glorious life in Heaven. Help me to learn from her by turning away from all sin and becoming deeply devoted to You. May my fidelity to You, dear Lord, be absolute and unwavering, so that I, too, will one day share in the glory of Your Resurrection. Jesus, I trust in You. Time for some math. If there are 72 crabs in a bushel, how many crabs are in 260 bushels? And for extra credit, how many crabs per person if they are one of the 1,400 or so at the 80th Annual Rotary Coffee Annapolis Crab Feast on August 1st? SPOILER: The answer is nearly a dozen! Today, we sit down with Lisa Mam, a local realtor and the force behind organizing a feast for over 1,000 people on August 1st. We went from A to Z — from all-you-can-eat to zero waste, and a lot in between. What is required to organize this? How many crabs do you need? When does planning start? How many people make it all go? And then we discussed the rewards for the community — grants to non-profit organizations, as well as other Annapolis Rotary initiatives. To be honest, I am not sure what the community would do without them! Tickets are now on sale online, and some will also be available at the gate on August 1st. Have a listen! Preaching for the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene, Martha Ligas invites us to let God's love transform us and - through us - the world: "May this day, this Feast of Mary Magdalene, be an opportunity to re-commit to transforming the world. To encountering and becoming the Love of God that the world so desperately needs. May we do it for our grandmothers, and our granddaughters, too. Like our ancestor Mary of Magdala, may we fall in love. May we stay in love. And may we let it decide everything."Martha Ligas (she/her) serves as the Pastoral Minister at the Community of St. Peter in Cleveland, Ohio, and Program Associate at FutureChurch. Both spaces give her room to ride the coattails of the Spirit by reimagining what it means to create faith communities of belonging. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Ministry from Fordham University. Martha lives in Cleveland, OH with her partner and their pets. Send us a textStrong Women Strong WorldEsther | Part 4Senior Pastor Keith StewartJuly 20, 2025The book of Esther is one of the most creatively written books in the entire Bible. In fact, you'll be amazed by it. The lead character is female and she's a true hero. Not only does she help to avert a planned holocaust for the Jewish people, this story becomes the basis of the annual Feast of Purim which celebrates God's protection of His people. You'll also see amazing parallels between Esther's story and Jesus' story. Don't miss this next installment in our series, Strong Women, Strong World!____________Discussion Questions 1. Though Esther lived in a time of extreme patriarchy (where the rights of men were far greater than those of women), she was able to rise to a position of influence and use that influence to save the nation. What was true about Esther's day was also the prevailing culture throughout most of the history during which the Bible was written. What other stories of women in Scripture are you aware of who rose to prominence and leadership in spite of the culture of the day? Discuss the ways in which they were used by God. How do their stories inspire you? How are you or the women you know impacted by stories like these?2. Take some time in your group to discuss the following quote, “In the moral conflict now raging around us, whoever is on God's side is on the winning side and cannot lose; whoever is on the other side is on the losing side and cannot win” (A.W. Tozer). 3. God gave Esther a mentor in her uncle Mordecai. How important have mentors been in your own life and development? Have you ever had one? If so, in what arena of life? What was their impact on you? How has that person helped to shape the person you have become? 4. The Bible makes a distinction between time (chronos – which is clocks, days and calendars) and time (kairos – a pregnant moment in time, a pivotal moment in history). Esther's story is a reminder that we are where we are and who we are for a reason. And sometimes, everything seems to align to create an opportunity to exercise our gifting, utilize our influence and invest our talent – a Kairos moment. In reflecting on Esther's Kairos moment, are you aware of other Kairos moments in Scripture, in world history or US history, or in your own personal life? If so, describe what happened and why you think it was a Kairos moment. 5. The book of Esther is written in a very creative style. Pastor Keith talked about this very Jewish way of writing which is most commonly known as chiastic writing. As a group or individual, download both the simplified and detailed chiastic structure of Esther from the online message notes. Notice how each and every negative and dark outcome in the first half of the book is then corrected by a positive and hopeful outcome in the latter portion of the book? What did you learn about this style of writing? Why did Jewish writers use it? How does it help to clarify and amplify the message of Esther? 6. As Pastor Keith wrapped up the message, he focused on some of the parallels between Esther's story and Jesus's story. Can you name the parallels he mentioned and why? Are you aware of any other ways that Esther's story is similar to Jesus' story? If so, what are they?

Spurgeon says that this text overpowers him: “It is a gem of priceless value.” Even before he gets to the formal substance of his sermon, his unusually long introduction has turned that gem in the light so that its facets begin to reflect something of the goodness of God, and set us up for the main elements of his address. In fact, he effectively gives us a couple of mini-sermons before he gets to the sermon proper! When he eventually begins to work through five particulars to which he wants to draw our attention, he first considers blessings in their fullness—God as our sun. Then there are blessings in their counterpoise—that God is also a shield. Developing that thought, he then turns us to blessings in their order. Building on that, we have blessings in development and in maturity. Finally, there are blessings in their universality. The sermon is less one of sequence and more one of layering, thought laid upon thought, and insight upon insight, giving us a rich and sweet feast for those who walk uprightly, and closing with urgent entreaties to enjoy and expect the good things that the Lord has laid up for his people. Janelle shares her journey into intermittent fasting after a long history in the world of bodybuilding. Janelle explains she first heard about intermittent fasting during her bodybuilding days in the early 2010s, though at the time, she and others in the fitness community dismissed it as just another fad. She attempted fasting briefly under the guidance of someone who didn't fully understand the clean fast principles, leading her to give up, concerned about muscle loss. Many years and life changes later—including pregnancy, motherhood, and the closure of gyms during the pandemic—Janelle found herself struggling with unexplained weight gain and low energy, even after trying traditional approaches to nutrition and fitness.A turning point came when a coworker, whose sister's doctor recommended intermittent fasting, rekindled Janelle's interest. Janelle began her journey in June 2023, starting with a 14:10 approach and gradually narrowing her eating window as she learned more, eventually settling into a routine that worked for her lifestyle. Her initial research brought her to Gin's book, Fast. Feast. Repeat., which she credits—as well as the Intermittent Fasting Stories podcast and community—for giving her the knowledge and support to embrace clean fasting and the “delay, don't deny” philosophy. Listening to the podcast episodes, Janelle connected deeply with the stories of others and found practical tools and reassurance in their diversity of experience.Janelle's approach to fasting has not been defined by rapid weight loss but by steady progress and substantial health improvements. She openly discusses her slow, “turtle” pace in shedding pounds, emphasizing how much better she feels in terms of physical energy and mental clarity. Throughout her two-year journey, Janelle has released over 20 pounds and, most importantly, shifted away from a restrictive, scale-obsessed relationship with food, particularly as a former bodybuilder. She highlights the newfound freedom she enjoys around food and eating—modeling a positive example for her young daughter and appreciating treats, family meals, and special occasions without guilt or diet mentality.Janelle concludes her story by encouraging newcomers to immerse themselves in well-researched resources—particularly Gin's books and the podcast—for practical guidance and support. She underlines the importance of keeping an open mind, especially for those with a diet-focused background or entrenched ideas about nutrition. Janelle's final advice is to try intermittent fasting without overcomplicating it: read, learn, don't stress about perfection, and remember it costs nothing to give it a shot. According to Janelle, intermittent fasting has been truly life-changing, and she urges others to discover its benefits for themselves.Get Gin's books at: https://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html. Friends of the Rosary,Today is the Memorial of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the feast day of the Carmelite Order and the Feast of the Scapular. We celebrate worldwide the devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and her Brown Scapular. This feast was instituted in 1332 and extended to the whole Church by Benedict XIII in 1726.In the twelfth century, a group of hermits living on Mount Carmel was organized into the Carmelite order devoted to the contemplative life under the patronage of Mary, the holy Mother of God.The Carmelites were still under constant harassment, and the sixth General of the Order, St. Simon Stock, pleaded with the Blessed Virgin for some special sign of her protection. On July 16, 1251, she designated the scapular as the special mark of her maternal love.Today, the scapular is a distinctive feature of the Carmelites, and lay persons also wear this sacramental object, enjoy the graces associated with it, and do so as a sign of their devotion to Our Lady. The Brown Scapular object is an expression of our belief that we will meet God in eternal life, aided by the intercession and prayer of Mary.Today, in New York City's East Harlem, is one of the oldest festivals in America dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Additionally, Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY, hosts the annual Festival of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel and St. Paulinus of Nola (Festa Del Giglio).Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars and movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Sometimes we are lucky enough to even speak with them about their work. And sometimes, they are both a movie star and a movie director. Today that's Embeth Davidtz, director of Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight, now in theaters and expanding this weekend. Our B-Sides include Feast of July, The Gingerbread Man, Mansfield Park, and Bicentennial Man. We speak with Davidtz about her directorial debut, her incredibly diverse acting career, and adapting from the memoir by Alexandra Fuller. There's extended discussion of Robert Altman's direction of actors, the underrated qualities of Feast of July (a Merchant Ivory production!), and the ambitions of Bicentennial Man. Not to mention the incredible high-wire act by Davidtz's in her dual performance in that Chris Columbus sci-fi epic. There are reflections on working with B-Side friend and frequent guest Alessandro Nivola, the legacy of the Miss Honey character from Matilda, and the “trickery” involved in directing a child like Lexi Venter to an incredibly natural performance.

What if stress didn't have to control how you feel—and you had simple tools to change it, starting today? If you've been enjoying The Health Feast, I'd be so grateful if you left a quick review on Apple Podcasts. It helps others find the show—and keeps this Feast growing. Dr. Robyn Tiger knows this firsthand. Years ago, she was a practicing radiologist with what looked like a perfect life on paper—two kids, a great career, a supportive husband. But behind the scenes, her body was breaking down. Migraines, digestive issues, numbness, anxiety… she went to specialists, ran every test, and took every medication. Nothing helped. The real diagnosis? Chronic stress. In this powerful conversation, we dive into Robyn's journey of healing and how she now helps others reclaim their health through simple, science-backed tools. Robyn is a double board-certified physician, certified yoga therapist, life coach, and the founder of StressFreeMD. I met her through the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, where she is a leading expert on mind body medicine, and leads breathwork, yoga, and mindfulness sessions. In this episode, we discuss: The hidden ways chronic stress shows up in the body (and why 90% of symptoms seen in primary care have stress as a root cause) Emotional buffering—why we numb stress with food, alcohol, or overwork, and how to break the cycle The yoga class that shifted everything for Robyn—and why it worked Why physician burnout is not a personal failing, but a systemic issue Practical, evidence-based tools you can use to feel better now (and yes, she guides us through one of them in the episode!) Robyn's story is a reminder that feeling better isn't just possible—it's a choice. And sometimes, the first step is simply learning how to breathe again. Live Well and RAK ON, Dr. Rak

Producer/Director - Jeremy McCarter, Sound Designer - Misha Fiksel Making its World Premiere at the venerable Tribeca Festival and featured on Apple Podcasts, MakeBelieve's revelatory new take on Shakespeare's iconic tragedy drops you inside the fractured mind of the prince. Produced and directed by Jeremy McCarter and with breathtaking binaural sound design by Tony-Award winner Mikhail "Misha" Fiksel, this is Hamlet as you've never heard it before. JEREMY McCARTER Jeremy is the founder and executive producer of Make-Believe Association, a nonprofit audio production company. Prior to Hamlet, he co-created, co-wrote, and executive produced Lake Song, the acclaimed audio-drama series that was an Official Selection of the Tribeca Festival, a Webby Award nominee, and the winner of three Signal Awards. He also co-wrote (with Natalie Moore) and executive-produced City on Fire: Chicago Race Riot 1919, an audio docudrama about the summer that ravaged and remade the city. It was co-produced by Make-Believe Association and WBEZ, and won the Headliner Award for Best in Show for radio broadcasts in 2019. Prior to founding Make-Believe, he spent five years on the artistic staff of the Public Theater in New York, where he created and ran the Public Forum series. These performances and conversations featured many of America's leading actors, writers, activists, and community leaders, exploring the intersection of arts and society. MISHA FIKSEL Initially a theatrical artist, Fiksel pursued his curiosity and appreciation of the screen, both as a composer and a sound designer. He has scored several independent feature films, including “Glitch” and “The Wise Kids” as well several shorts such as “Alien Queens”, “Both/And” and “The Learning Curve” (a short film inspired by an acclaimed immersive theatrical production exploring the high school experience). Misha has worked on several trailers and promotional videos for various corporate and non-for-profit clients and expanding on his collaboration with Albany Park Theatre Project, he worked with documentary director Dan Andries, scoring several film adaptions of APTP's stage plays, including “Feast” which received the 2018 Emmy (Midwest) for Direction. Ghana's twentieth century was one of dramatic political, economic, and environmental change. Sparked initially by the impositions of colonial rule, these transformations had significant, if rarely uniform, repercussions for the determinants of good and bad nutrition. All across this new and uneven polity, food production, domestic reproduction, gender relations, and food cultures underwent radical and rapid change. This volatile national history was matched only by the scientific instability of nutritional medicine during these same years. Moving between the dry Northern savannah, the mineral-rich and food-secure Southern rainforest, and the youthful, ever-expanding cities, John Nott's Between Feast and Famine: Food, Health, and the History of Ghana's Long Twentieth-Century (UCL Press, 2025) is a comparative history of nutrition in Ghana since the end of the nineteenth century. At the heart of this story is an analysis of how an uneven capitalist transformation variously affected the lives of women and children. It traces the change from sporadic periods of hunger in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, through epidemics of childhood malnutrition during the twentieth century, and into emergent epidemics of diet-related non-communicable disease in the twenty-first century. Employing a novel, critical approach to historical epidemiology, Nott argues that detailing the co-production of science and its subjects in the past is essential for understanding and improving health in the present. John Nott is a Research Fellow in Science, Technology and Innovation Studies at the University of Edinburgh. His research interests sit primarily across the history of medicine and economic history, with a particular focus on colonial and postcolonial contexts. He also has complementary interests in medical anthropology and STS, and is currently a Research Fellow on Lukas Engelmann's ERC-funded project, "The Epidemiological Revolution: A History of Epidemiological Reasoning in the Twentieth Century." Amongst other things, he is working on a monograph detailing the economic and medical history of surveillance in Anglophone Africa. Dr. Nott is also the Principal Investigator of a collaborative British Academy-funded project, "Population Health in Practice: Towards a Comparative Historical Ethnography of the Demographic Health Survey," which explores the history and contemporary production of epidemiological and demographic data in Ghana, Tanzania, and Malawi. Dr. Nott was trained at the University of Leeds, where his PhD focused on the history of nutrition and nutritional medicine in Ghana since the end of the nineteenth century. Immediately before coming to Edinburgh, he was a fellow at the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa (MIASA) at the University of Ghana. Before this, Dr. Nott was based at Maastricht University as a Research Fellow on Anna Harris' ERC-funded project, “Making Clinical Sense: a Historical-Ethnographic Study of the Technologies Used in Medical Education. The edited collection, “Making Sense of Medicine: Material Culture and the Reproduction of Medical Knowledge,” recently won the Amsterdamska Award by the European Association for the Study of Science & Technology (EASST). You can learn more about his work here. Afua Baafi Quarshie is a Ph.D. candidate in history at the Johns Hopkins University. Our Homeland Visit | Roots & Stories (Ep. 472)This week on IGNITE Radio Live, Greg and Stephanie recount their summer “pilgrimage” to the sacred soil of Wisconsin—beginning at the breathtaking Basilica of St. Josaphat in Milwaukee and culminating at Our Lady of Champion, the only approved Marian apparition site in the United States (up there with the hallowed Lambeau Field). Along the way, they reveled in holy encounters, family hilarity, and divine appointments—from their son Seph taking the main stage at Lifest, to strolling the old Oshkosh neighborhood where faith, sacraments, sports, and mischief once collided at Sacred Heart School. Amid bratwurst, bonfires, and the beautiful mess of family life, they rediscovered the joy of shared roots and the sacred power of telling our story—woven into God's larger story of redemption. This episode is a heartfelt invitation for every family longing to reconnect with what matters most.Plus, we're excited to share two epic creative projects on the horizon:
Andrea is not only a retired elementary music teacher but also a piano composer, karate instructor, and women's self-defense teacher. They dive right into how Andrea discovered intermittent fasting in 2023 after hearing about it from a friend, initially reacting with skepticism before getting curious and quickly diving into podcasts and resources. A structured person by nature, Andrea took to tracking her fasting hours with an app, finding the visual goal-tracking motivating, and soon made fasting a daily habit, even amidst travel and a busy, active lifestyle.Andrea shares several anecdotes highlighting how intermittent fasting has become more mainstream, citing moments in pop culture and interactions with global karate colleagues who also fast. She describes her initial fasting experience, gradually finding what worked best for her, including experimenting with alternate day fasting (ADF) and 500-calorie down days. Andrea found joy in making down days a fun challenge by cooking satisfying meals within calorie limits, and she emphasizes the flexibility and long-term sustainability she now feels with intermittent fasting.A significant part of the conversation centers on mindful eating, overcoming toxic diet culture, and the freedom that comes from ditching rigid calorie restriction. Andrea candidly recounts her own weight plateaus and how shifting away from eating while distracted—especially stopping the habit of eating in front of the TV—made a real difference in her progress. She encourages listeners to track their weight over weeks, not days, and to adjust their process (including mindful, plated meals) rather than simply trusting the process when stuck. Both Gin and Andrea also reflect on the pitfalls of diet brain, the importance of eating real foods over ultra-processed choices, and the culture of comparing oneself to unrealistic standards.Andrea finishes the episode by sharing her advice for anyone starting out: celebrate finding intermittent fasting, consistently plate your meals, avoid distracted eating, and prioritize some form of exercise or stretching routine. She advocates for patience, embracing the journey, and seeking out community to find inspiration and support along the way. Andrea's story is a testament to adapting intermittent fasting to fit your life, making mindful choices, and prioritizing long-term health and enjoyment over short-term restriction.Get Gin's books at: https://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html.
