Hello there, friends. Welcome back to Thrive Beyond Size. As you probably guessed from the title, today I want to talk about Simone Biles, the world's best and most decorated gymnast, who recently blew us away with her grace and incomparable physical skill in Paris. She won 3 gold and 1 silver medal in the Paris Olympics. But I think back on her bowing out of the Tokyo Olympics four years earlier as a different kind of shining example of courage and skill. She stepped down to take care of her mental health. She knew her body was ready but there was a disconnect in her mind and she acknowledged how important it was to be mentally ready too, to have mind and body work in harmony. That was a beautiful decision. But it must have been challenging for her to do. And that's what I want to talk about, doing the difficult thing that's best for us. When I look at my own life struggle with diet culture and weight loss, and I hear the stories I'm privileged to have other women share with me, I often realize that the reason we aren't taking charge of our health is because it's too big of a change right now. It's frightening. It's hard. And what I now teach people to do is what I had to do myself. That is take a look at where we've been for years and years, the way we've treated and showed up for our bodies, and make that incredibly challenging decision, much like Simone Biles, to step down from all of that and embrace a new way of thinking. I talk about how part of the fear is the sunk cost fallacy, that we've already invested so much of our time into dieting that we don't want it to be a waste, and part of it is that we're terrified of giving our bodies what they actually need which is the idea behind intuitive eating. In order to change direction and take care of ourselves mind and body, we need to first make that big bold courageous decision to step away from dieting and embrace something different. Something healthier. So join me because we're going to talk about exactly that in today's episode. I'm going to share my journey and we're going to explore what we can learn from Simone Biles. __Resources mentioned in this episode:CNN: Simone Biles reflects on Tokyo Olympics in ‘Rising'Episode 137: Talking About Your Body in Relationships with Rob Issa__About Dr. Michelle Tubman:Dr. Michelle Tubman is certified by the American Board of Obesity Medicine, which means she understands exactly what's happening in your body when you diet. Although she does not provide any medical advice in her coaching programs, this knowledge gives her an edge over most coaches. She also holds Level 1 and Level 2 Precision Nutrition coaching certifications which make her skilled at coaching nutrition, dietary change, and habit change in general. Realizing that emotional eating and bingeing are complicated for most of us, she also did training in mind-body and intuitive eating. Peace around food is possible. As the old adage goes, how we do one thing is how we do everything. It's very true that how we do food is often how we do life too. And if we've been struggling with food and body image, there's a good chance that other domains of our lives are contributing - relationships, family, work, money, sexuality, stress. Michelle knows that coaching us through all of this is what leads to our true transformation - from the inside out.__Learn more about Dr. Michelle Tubman and Wayza Health:Website: www.wayzahealth.comFollow me on Facebook and InstagramEmail Michelle: michelle@wayzahealth.com

I know this is a weird introduction, but the other night I watched Atlas with Jennifer Lopez. In the movie, there were AI robots. A couple of kinds. The one that saved her was the one that she had to simulate her mind with the Robot Smith. It took her all she could to do that final 100% sharing of her feelings. The key to her survival. I believe sinking with ourselves is just that. And this is where Ana's story intrigued me to how it related to finding yourself. JLo found herself through a robot asking her to fully engage her mind to help them both work together for him to help her survive. The truth is, WE need to synch with ourselves to survive. The key to our survival is knowing what is in our hearts. Ana shared her intimate story, and at that moment she said "I shared with my cousin I was bulimic. She was the first person I told" I cried. I cried because I know the emotions of "coming out".Ana turned her life around by finding what is in her heart, her passion, and her MISSION. She is now a Spiritual Coach. With the help of Reiki and Card Reading, she helps those who struggle with eating disorders to find the same path of recovery she did. And what is important is her Clients know she is speaking from the heart because she traveled that journey and recovered.Ana says it's about opening up the heart and sharing. It sounds easy, but it's not. Trust is required. It is why she opens her heart to her Clients so they know being vulnerable is the best way to be and that she can be trusted because she has been there.Ana's story is beautiful. Sad, caring, and about learning that everything happens for a reason. Her's is to serve, and help those who need to reach out and heal. The Magic In Healing. I am sure that will be a beautiful Podcast and book someday. In the interim, you can reach Ana on Instagram here... @TheMagicinHealing I appreciate Ana's honesty and her compassion for helping others recover. May is Mental Health Awareness Month. I really wanted to dive a little bit deeper with my friend the Uncomfortable Conversation Starter, Torre (Tor for short!) White. She is the founder of Simpleetor, the author of The Art of Being Self-ish: Discovering Understanding and Accepting Yourself, and a licensed Recovery & Life Coach. In this episode, we are opening up a bit more about Postpartum Depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and how navigating depression as a Black Woman and surviving suicide led her to the creation of her book and business. Her mission is to normalize the conversation surrounding mental health in BIPOC Communities. From Tor: "My purpose is to be the voice echoing to those whose pain is overshadowed by societal "norms." Too often we are told to be silent through our struggles, tough it out through our tears, and just plain "suck it up." However, I can tell you first hand this is not a healthy approach to living a full and happy life. It is okay to get help. It is okay to scream. It is okay to cry. We all have feelings for a reason, and you are reacting to a trigger for that very reason. Acknowledge it and get the help you need. Mental fortitude is the ability to focus and find solutions amid adversity. It's being able to get back up when you fall. As entrepreneurs, we hear about this all the time, but it's often easier said than done. Whenever we face challenges, we have two options: fight or flight. At that moment, we need to make a choice. Will you take ownership of the situation and keep going? In this episode, Lisa Tamati joins us to talk about how her personal life and business challenges built her grit and determination. She shares several business secrets to take your work to the next level. Mental fortitude is not just about your attitude towards challenges; it's also how you deal with your daily life routine. Lisa shares some healthy habits we need to incorporate into our lives. If you want to be inspired to build mental fortitude, then this episode is for you! Here are three reasons why you should listen to the full episode: Learn how to build mental fortitude through consistent action. Discover how you can actively take ownership of your life and decisions. Understand how to create healthy habits and routines in your daily life. Resources If you want to optimize your health and fitness, check out Lisa's epigenetics program. To find out more about how Lisa and her mother defied the odds, get your copy of Relentless. Follow Lisa on her website and Peak Wellness. For more information about health optimization, you can follow Lisa's podcast, Pushing the Limits. You may also tune in on Apple Podcasts. You can contact Lisa through email (support@lisatamati.com) or find her on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. Episode Highlights Building Mental Fortitude over Time Lisa learned discipline at a young age through her father and gymnastics. Gymnastics taught Lisa how to work hard, overcome fears, and perform in high-stress situations. Lisa shares that wanting to please her father and prove herself capable was a big driving force in her actions. Take Action When we make mistakes and stumble, we get back up again. As we keep taking action, we might fail, but there's a chance for success too. Lisa shares how she did a little bit of everything. Although she wasn't qualified in the usual sense to do the work, she finds ways to do them anyway. Overcome Challenges and Obstacles Lisa shares the hardest challenge she ever had to face was almost losing her mother to an aneurysm. They told her to expect the worst, but Lisa refused to accept it. She read up on everything she could about brain injuries and aneurysms to help her mother. Listen to the full episode to hear Lisa's story! How to Take Ownership Lisa notes how doctors have limitations. Some work long shifts and have hundreds of patients per day. We need to do the work and have due diligence. Obsessively researching helped Lisa get her mother back to good health. Take ownership of the situation and get into the details of your problems. Lisa's Business Secrets Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is essential. Knowing them means you find the right partners and people to cover your weaknesses. Quit when an idea isn't working anymore is crucial. It can be tempting but don't keep holding on to it. Time management means more energy throughout the day. Knowing what you need to focus on saves energy. Building a Healthy Habit Through epigenetics, Lisa knows when the optimal time is for exercise, intellectual work, and resting. It's common for people to say entrepreneurs need to work harder, working over 18 hours a day. This kind of attitude is dangerous and leads to health issues and sleep deprivation. Resting can be just as productive as work. Understand that if you're not stressed all the time, you can be more productive in half the amount of time. How Nature and Nurture Helps Us Genetics doesn't spell our destiny. It just guides us on what we have to watch out for. Once we know what we're susceptible to, we can build a routine to optimize our health. You can influence how your genes express through the actions you take and the environment you put yourself into. Through epigenetics, you can learn about what you can eat and what you should avoid, when and what you should exercise, and more! Learn more about personalizing your routines in the full episode! Accepting Yourself and Your Body Often, our goals focus on the way we look and how we perform in specific sports. We need to understand and accept that our bodies are different, and it's a reality that some sports just aren't for us. Being different isn't bad. It means we have different roles to play. Pushing your limits, in your way, helps you learn more about yourself. Becoming stronger means facing challenges head-on. Lisa's Advice on Building Mental Fortitude Remember, we're more capable than we think. Live your life and keep working towards your big goals. Don't forget to rest. Recovery is an important part of working hard too! 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “Having that mentality of just ‘go, go, go' and take action, and [when you] fail and get back up again: learn from that mistake. And that resilience, I think that comes from that because you do fall on your face sometimes; and other times, you're hugely successful.” “You have to be the one that goes and does the work, does the research, and not feel as if you don't have the right to do that because we live in a day and age where we can access the greatest minds on the planet.” “So many people are just written off as: you've got a terminal illness, you've got cancer or you whatever the case may be, and there's no hope for you. When that is not true.” “I used to work up until 12, 1 o'clock in the morning. I don't anymore because it's a false economy, you think you are getting more done by being an absolute hard entrepreneur working 18 hours a day, all that does is lead to health issues and problems and sleep deprivation.” “So genetics is not your destiny - it depends on which genes are turned on and off, how they will really express and this is when your environment comes into it. So if you have a combination of knowing what your genetics are, and knowing how to optimize them, and avoid trial and error, then you'll be able to do the best with what you've got.” About Lisa Lisa Tamati is one of New Zealand's well-known ultramarathon runners. Beginning your spiritual journey is an amazing experience, and it can be very challenging at times when you are wanting to attune your spiritual and psychic gifts, skills and abilities to the highest level you can to provide the great result. Learning and attuning can be a slow process from some, and a faster process for others. Patience is virtue, as everyone is different and manifests their abilities at different times of their journey. Patience is very important to the continued positive impact of your spiritual travels. Accepting yourself as a divine conduit and spiritual healer and messenger from God is very overwhelming at times, even when you are constantly shown signs that you are doing as you were put here to do. Some of this has to deal with one not fully accepting themselves for who they are within their spiritual soul and spirit. Listen as I share some ways on you can obtain more patience via one of my meditation techniques, and why you already accept yourself but sometimes find yourself judging yourself and how that is blocking that acceptance, and how to remove those blocks!
