0:00 -- Intro.2:08 -- Start of interview.2:45 -- Alison's "origin story". 5:07 -- Her experience in management consulting with McKinsey & Co and Kearney.5:49 --  Her experience as CFO at Barclays Global Investors (now BlackRock) and with private equity as the managing director of Belvedere Capital, focused on investing in US banks and financial services firms. The challenges of banking post-financial crisis and Dodd-Frank (2010).9:26 --  Her pivot to fintech and blockchain investing. Since 2014 she's been investing in crypto. She co-founded Blockchain Coinvestors with her husband Mathew Le Merle.11:57 -- Her take on the future of blockchain "I think that it's completely inevitable that fully digital assets and fully digital payments are coming, it's just a matter of time [but timing is everything if you're an investor]." "There is no doubt in my mind that blockchain technology is a massively important component of the next generation of our global digital economy." "We will have fully digitally enabled payment and assets as part of our next generation web [some referred it as Web 3.0]."13:38 -- On her experience with public company board service. Her first board was in 1998 with Dispatch Management Services Company [Founded in 1994 by Linda Jenkinson and Greg Kidd. DMSC was a publicly traded company that handled point-to-point delivery services]. At the time she was CFO at BGI. Since then, she has served on 22 corporate boards, over half of them public companies, the others in private companies. "It's been fascinating and I really enjoy [this work] enormously."16:51 -- In 2011 she was invited to join the board of the Royal Bank of Scotland. That was her introduction to U.K. corporate governance. She was on the board for 9 years, because there are term limits in the U.K. [after 9 years, a director is no longer considered 'independent'].20:25 -- On dual-class share structures adopted in the UK (against the long standing "one share, one vote" principle).21:24-- On the role of the board in strategy and innovation. "When public companies lose a lot value, 80% of the time it's because of strategy missteps."25:51  -- How should boards deal with crisis management. "From the crisis that I've experienced as a director, ~40% of them have been due to exogenous factors, and ~60% have been due to self-inflicted wounds (such as bad culture, personality clashes, single person failure, etc)." In the latter case, a lot of them could have been spotted earlier by a really engaged board that was connected enough to the company to understand that these things were arising."28:21  -- On whether having more inside (executive) directors on boards impacts at all the governance of the company.29:54 -- On the idea of having employee representatives on corporate boards of directors. "We explored this seriously at RBS, but we decided instead that a sub-committee of the board spend time on 'employee listening sessions' and we created a workers' council to connect on these matters." "I think that U.S. boards could really benefit from more listening sessions with key stakeholders."32:47 -- On the evolution of sustainability and ESG. Her experience with Barclays Global Investors, and the vision of then CEO Patty Dunn, who questioned the idea of companies having great short term value but leaving a wake of damage that later society and/or tax payers had to pay. She posited having a more active role as stewards of long term capital for a more sustainable future. The case of RBS, going from darlings of Wall Street to almost the world's biggest bank failure. "That was a wake up call." "I am a big fan of ESG broadly defined." "I am really excited that [big institutional investors] have leaned in and are tipping this discussion."38:58 -- On the growing influence of large institutional investors in corporate governance: "The [beneficiaries of large index funds] do not want short-term high profit at long-term costs to the economy and people's lives." "I'm very supportive of large institutional investors focusing on broader societal issues and the health of capitalism." "Can capitalism retain the trust of the people that live in a capitalist system?" "I mean, you could democratize the whole thing and say everyone has a vote but your average person is not investing the time to get really educated on these issues."41:35 -- On the books that she's co-authored with her husband Matthew Le Merle: Build your Fortune in the Fifth Era,Corporate Innovation in the Fifth Era,Blockchain Competitive Advantage, andThe Intelligent Investor – Silicon Valley.44:55 -- No specific books "that have changed her life", but she's a big reader of The Economist.45:42 -- Who were your mentors, and what did you learn from them? Patty Dunn, ex CEO of BGI. "She touched my heart, as well my [mind]. She was a great leader and was very inspirational."Ross McEwan, ex CEO of RBS47:26 -- Are there any quotes you think of often or live your life by? From Desiderata (1927): "With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy." 48:32 --  An unusual habit or an absurd thing that you love: "Making jam with my husband, we make a killer Lemoncello and apricot jam"!49:14 --  The person(s) she most admires: entrepreneurs from the Renaissance Entrepreneurship Center (she's a board member of this organization).Alison Davis the Co-Founder and Chair of Blockchain Coinvestors & Fifth Era, a leading VC firm investing in blockchain and Web 3. 83. Pamela Slim - Shape the World Through Your Work  “You have to really know how to tell the story about how your experience has really crafted for this work that you want to do. I call Body of Work the love letter to creation. It really centers what it is that you're building and being very deliberate about what you want to bring to life. And then everything else is secondary.” Guest Info: Pamela Slim is an author, business coach and the co-founder with her husband Darryl of the Main Street Learning Lab in Mesa, Arizona. A former corporate director of training and development at Barclays Global Investors, Pam focused her first decade in business as a management consultant, working with large companies such as HP, Charles Schwab, 3Com, Chevron and Cisco Systems. Since 2005, Pam has advised thousands of entrepreneurs as well as companies serving the small business market such as Keap, Progressive Insurance, Constant Contact and Prezi. Pam partnered with author Susan Cain to build and launch the Quiet Revolution. Pam has written three books: Escape from Cubicle Nation (named Best Small Business and Entrepreneur book of 2009 from  Porchlight Books), Body of Work (2014 with Penguin Portfolio) and her latest, The Widest Net (2021 with McGraw Hill, named Best Marketing & Sales Book of 2021 by Porchlight Books). In 2016, Pam launched the Main Street Learning Lab in Mesa, Arizona, a grassroots, community-based think tank for small business economic acceleration. http://pamelaslim.com/ke In The Widest Net, she explains how to build strong diverse relationships, identify and connect with new partners, expand markets, generate leads, and find new customers in places you may never have considered. With this book as a guide, you'll learn how to connect with potential clients and customers using the true breadth of the marketplace, which she calls an ecosystem of living connections. The Widest Net shows how to: Search outside your own lens/bias/routine/history to target ideal customers. Attract the interest and attention of new leads by learning more about them authentically. Develop products and services suited to these customers. Sell through a trusted reciprocity framework where your customers become part of your ecosystem and you each help the other grow. Build and sustain loyalty and trust with new customers. Nurture a diverse and resilient customer base by identifying and adjusting to the ideal customer target over time. Pam is frequently quoted as a business expert in press such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, Forbes, Entrepreneur, Information Week, Money Magazine and Psychology Today. Favorite Quote: "We all need each other." R.O.G. Takeaway Tips: Questions to contemplate: What are your values? The core beliefs you have about what matters most. What are your ingredients? Skills, experiences, perspectives, hidden talents?  How can you leverage them?  What makes you uniquely positioned in your organization and in the market? What are you creating? What are you investing in that will last long beyond your tenure. How can you center on what you are creating? What do you need? To make the creation work. To get exposure for it. To improve it. What's the work you want to do? Where are your customers? What ecosystem (AKA watering holes) do you want to join? What impact did you want to make? Looking back – What impact have you already made?  What matters most are the ways we purposefully bring our full self: values, ingredients, creations, desires, all of it into the work for a mission greater than ourselves. Quote: "Being In This Skin Is the Only Way to Really Experience It" You simply have to listen to the conversation I had with Troy Prince. Troy is the Founder of Wall Street Bound, an education and training organization focused on the recruitment, exposure, licensing, and placement of inner-city youth into front office intern positions on Wall Street. Troy is also a graduate of the prestigious Bronx High School of Science and the NYU Stern School of Business. Troy and I talked about what it was like growing up in a strong, close-knit, education-focused family in the Bronx. The southern-most section of the Bronx is a mere 10.2 miles away from Wall Street according to Google Maps, and yet it may as well be on a different planet. Most kids that grow up in the Bronx have little to no exposure to the world of global finance nor the employment opportunities it presents. Troy is committed to changing this and believes that while IQ and Talent are equally distributed, opportunity is not. Troy and I have known each other for more than 20 years. We met when he was a buy-side trader at Barclays Global Investors in Tokyo and I was a sell-side portfolio trader at Goldman Sachs. We talked about our experiences in Tokyo and how it was the first time I experience being a 'visual minority', something that Troy has to deal with every day of his life. We also noted that it was the first time a lot of the foreign traders in Tokyo felt somehow out of their comfort zones. Troy also spent almost five years living and investing in Vietnam as an angel investor, but could not get the idea of 'Wall Street Bound' and the positive impact it would have on under-served communities out of his mind. He decided to stop thinking about it and start doing it, like a true entrepreneur. Wall Street Bound currently runs three impactful programs with more on the way. Most recently, WSB has created a program in partnership with Maverick Trading that trains urban youth to trade and manage real money in live markets. This firm doesn't just have bags though, it has baggage as well. It has become notorious for its shady practices and seems to be on a path of world domination. In this video we're going to be doing a deep dive into the controversial investment firm Blackrock. Since it was founded in the late 80s, Blackrock has grown much larger than its older and more established competitors, and now owns many of the big names on Wall Street, including Merryl Lynch and Barclays Global Investors. The reach of this firm extends far beyond their own business as well.

Today I talked to Pamela Slim about her new book The Widest Net: Unlock Untapped Markets and Discover New Customers Right in Front of You (McGraw Hill, 2021). Almost all the new jobs created in America come from small businesses, Pamela Slim reports. The precise number may be as high as over 99%. And those same businesses provide over 50% of the nation's GDP. So why not focus more on them? Slim does so by being expansive. Her focus includes Native American, Black, Latinx, Asian, disabled and LGBTQ entrepreneurs. How can they find their niches, then expand them? Who's their ideal customer? What challenges or problems does a company's branded offer solve? What kind of partners can one find? What kind of eco-system of “watering holes” allows one to join a greater community and thrive together? What do cohort-based courses like Wes Kao and Seth Godin's altMBA program look like? If taking a business partner, what pitfalls to be on guard against? Those are among the topics this episode explores. Pamela Slim is an author, community builder, business coach, and former director of Training and Development at Barclays Global Investors. Among her accomplishments is partnering with author Susan Cain to build and launch The Quiet Revolution. Among her books is Escape from Cubicle Nation: From Corporate Prisoner to Thriving Entrepreneur. Dan Hill, PhD, is the author of nine books and leads Sensory Logic, Inc. The Widest Net: Unlock Untapped Markets and Discover New Customers Right in Front of You by Pamela Slim About the Book: Discover and create a dynamic new model for growing your business by connecting with customers outside your usual field of view. Do you think you know your ideal customer? Think again. Many businesses create an ideal consumer profile―aiming all their sales and marketing efforts towards this single type of person―and end up missing out on endless opportunities to sell their services or products. Award-winning business coach, speaker, and author Pamela Slim has helped thousands of entrepreneurs around the world start, sustain, and scale their businesses. In The Widest Net, she explains how to build strong diverse relationships, identify and connect with new partners, expand markets, generate leads, and find new customers in places you may never have considered. Social media is a valuable business tool, but it can often create a comfortable cocoon for entrepreneurs, marketers, and leaders who all need to understand the entirety of the marketplace, not just their own social graph. About the Author: Pamela Slim is an author, business coach, and former corporate director of training and development at Barclays Global Investors. Intro.(1:30) - Start of interview.(2:12) - Abe's "origin story". He grew up in L.A and moved up to the Bay Area where he attended Berkeley for college and law school. After law school he went to Seattle and worked in-house for US West Communications (now Qwest Corporation). Back in northern California he joined another telecom before joining the founding team at Glass Lewis in 2003 ("the market was ripe for disruption").(5:37) - His time as the Global Head of Corporate Governance at Barclays Global Investors (2005-2009).(7:38) - His time as the Managing Director and Global Head of Corporate Governance and Responsible Investment at BlackRock (2009-2011). "The focus and attention to corporate governance was ramping up at that time and BlackRock was an incredible spot to be in a moment of so much change in the space."(9:39) - On why he decided to start Camberview Partners in 2012. "Most of the people thought I was crazy. It was a big decision to take that leap." "Maybe the hardest decision that I've had to make professionally but probably the best decision in terms of what it has created in the market."(11:45) - He started the firm because he believed that they were at a moment in the evolution of governance where companies would have to care a lot more about the institutions and people voting their shares. Two drivers: Say-on-Pay (after Dodd-Frank) and the rise of Shareholder Activism. Companies were not doing much engagement with voting teams at the big institutional investors. They needed better advice.(19:38) - On the rise of institutional investors and their growing influence in corporate governance.(24:28) - On the rise of stakeholder capitalism and ESG. "I think it's definitely here to stay."(26:53) - The current state of play in shareholder activism.(31:20) - Two issues to consider in the current market:"It's very common for public companies to underestimate the extent to which investors don't care so much about the messenger as they do about the message. They care about the substance.""The need for companies to change how they manage their IR strategy has never been stronger."  "Most companies are still operating in an old and outdated IR model [still tailored mostly to fundamental investors, when it should address a much broader set of constituencies]."(36:53) - On board diversity and social changes. "This has impacted the investor dialogue, including human capital management."(41:42) - On the rise of private markets and startup governance issues. How PJT Partners has allowed them to expand their governance footprint beyond only voting (in public companies). Now they tap all investor issues (their team has about ~70 people now).(47:28) - The books that have greatly influenced his life:Crossing to Safety (1987), by Wallace Stegner. The Return of Martin Guerre (1983), by Natalie Zemon Davis.(48:48) - His mentors: his scout master (Marty Burger), his grandmother, and his former his boss at BGI (Naozer Dadachanji, who became a board member and investor in Camberview Partners).(51:42) - Quote that he thinks of often, or lives his life by: "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." (Martin Luther King).(52:54) - An unusual or absurd habit that he loves: family tradition of watching "the price is right" (while they're home sick).(53:35) - His time as Mayor of the City of Piedmont.(55:06) - The living person he most admires: his wife.Abe M. Friedman is a Partner and Head of PJT Camberview, based in San Francisco. Mr. Friedman joined PJT Partners through the acquisition of CamberView Partners in 2018. Mr. Friedman founded CamberView in 2012 and served as its Chief Executive Officer through 2018. Before founding CamberView, Mr. Friedman was Managing Director and Global Head of Corporate Governance and Responsible Investment at BlackRock. Prior to that role, he served in leadership positions, including Global Head of Corporate Governance, at Barclays Global Investors from 2005 until the company merged with BlackRock in 2009. The future of defined contribution retirement savings will always be marked by two key concepts: putting individual investors first when designing plans, and constantly innovating. Over the course of the next four episodes, we're going to discuss how regulation, litigation, and the role of consultants both support and deter innovation. We're going to start with two featured guests who laid the foundation for the modern 401(k):     • Brigitte Madrian, who pioneered behavioral economics work on automatic enrollment    • Larry Tint, creator of the Target Date Fund   Key Takeaways: [:29] Josh opens up today's episode with a quick recap of episode 4 which focused on the work of two innovators in the field. He pursues the series by talking about his  experience and what he believes the very heart of the issues to be — innovation, regulation and consultancies. [4:00] How did Larry Tint — former U.S. CEO of Barclays Global Investors — change the trajectory of the retirement industry? Josh and Larry detail his career trajectory and how it led to meeting the future Nobel prize winner Bill Sharpe and the birth of SharpeTint. [8:00] Most individual investors don't know how to build investment portfolios! Larry talks about his time at Wells Fargo and his work with Don Luskin to use the technology he created with Bill to the benefit of individuals. The Target Date funds were born. [11:39] The General Motors exception! Also Larry talks about the innovations he didn't act on or think of and how this might have changed the course of things even further — wheels on suitcases? [15:30] Target date Funds were still being held back, and more innovation was required. Josh introduces Behavioral Economist Brigitte Madrian — ninth Dean of the Marriott School of Business at Brigham Young University (BYU).  [17:10] Behavioral Economics was not a thing when Brigitte began her academic career. She speaks to a life-changing moment in data analysis and the 20 plus years of research this generated! [22:29] So why is auto-enrollment so successful? Brigitte shares what her research points to as well as the kinds of organisations that immediately were on board, and the ones that weren't. [26:07] The biggest hurdle… Lawsuits! Brigitte talks about the policy makers that got in touch with her and how she helped shape policy. She also shares the pride she feels about her public and academic involvement. [28:55] Larry takes a moment to reflect on his contributions to the retirement landscape. [29:43] Josh thanks his guests for sharing their stories and opens up the discussion on what came after Target Date Funds and automatic enrollment in the retirement planning space.
