Venerable Hue Can is the Abbess of Sunyata Meditation Centre in Vic Park and has the very clear goal to teach others how to realize their full potential through Zen Buddhism. Venerable Hue Can had an interesting and diverse career as a teacher, Children's Librarian and co-ordinator of the Ethnic Child Care Resource Unit. As an advocate for access and equity she have worked in the area of social welfare, particularly in the Vietnamese community in Western Australia. When the Most Venerable Master Thich Thanh Tu came to Perth in 1996 she was fortunate to attend his lecture “Why am I a Buddhist”. She found out that Buddhism could give her five things that she had always been searching for – wisdom, altruism, freedom, equality and emancipation. She wanted to become his disciple and follow the path that he had illuminated. Her first ordination occurred in 1998. Every year, the monastic community (Monks and nuns) go on a three month retreat called the “Rains Retreat” from mid July to mid October. During this period, they do not visit our centres for teachings as it's a time for deepening their own practice. While the monks and nuns are away, we will have some interesting guest speakers coming in to give the Friday Night talk. The last night — and the one I nearly didn't write...Mørketid ends tonight. Sweden.Fair warning on this one...This episode is about children. The bäckahästen drowns them and the Myling is one that was left in the woods to die, and while I've kept the detail out, it's there for the whole half-hour. If that's a hard subject for you, take this one at your own pace or skip it — the series works without it and I'd rather you were alright than completist.What I worked out while writing it...The bäckahästen is a white horse standing in a summer meadow. A child climbs on. Nothing happens, so a second climbs on behind them. And there's room. However many climb on, there is room, because the back gets longer — never suddenly, just, each time, space for one more. And a child being helped onto a horse isn't measuring the horse.Then it walks — walks, not gallops — into the water.Sweden has close to a hundred thousand lakes and children drowned in the summer in numbers we'd find unbearable now. And I don't think this story is a warning to children at all. It's far too appealing for that, and it clearly didn't work.It's for the parents. It's a story in which it wasn't the water and nobody looked up too late and nothing could have been done, because a beautiful white horse chose them.And the myling...A child left in the woods, which waits by the road and cries and asks to be carried to the churchyard so it can be buried properly. It gets heavier the closer you get to the gate — so the last two hundred yards are worse than the whole mile before them. If you make it, it rests. If you put it down, it kills you.I kept trying to work out why it gets heavier, and the answer isn't cruelty. It's that the nearer you get, the more it becomes a child, and the more the entire weight of what was done — and of a village that knew exactly what had happened and asked nothing — is on one person's back at once, in the dark, in sight of the wall.What the four nights turned out to be about...I didn't plan this and I only saw it writing the last Turn. Every one of these countries is dark for a third of the year. Every one had people living six miles from the next house with no light and no help.And what all four of them built wasn't a set of monsters. It was a set of instructions. Say the name out loud. Turn your coat inside out. Don't laugh at her. Watch what's in her hand. Don't put it down.Small, stubborn, faintly ridiculous things that a frightened person can actually do.That's what folklore is, I think. Not an explanation of the dark. She's just published her first memoir and is also currently on stage in The Children at the Lyric Hammersmith Theatre in London. Government figures show there have been at least 194,000 cases since March, and around 1,000 new cases are being reported everyday. The World Health Organisation says this makes Bangladesh the country with the highest number of cases in the world right now. The government is responding with an emergency vaccination campaign. Anita talked to Dr Zakiul Hassan, a medical doctor who works at an international research institute in Bangladesh and is currently completing a PhD at the University of Oxford's Pandemic Sciences Institute.Elite rock climber Shauna Coxsey has become the first woman to complete the UK's hardest deep-water solo climb. Shauna scaled The Olympiad, an overhanging cliff route above the sea in Pembrokeshire. Deep-water solo climbing involves scaling coastal routes without ropes or a harness, with climbers falling into the sea if they come off. Ronnie James Dio joining Black Sabbath really gave the band a shot in the arm. After declining returns with Ozzy in the late 70s, Ronnie's emergence as a singer and a songwriter helped push 1980's Heaven and Hell to platinum status in the US. The band and record company were eager to recapture the magic of Heaven and Hell but founding drummer Bill Ward had to replaced by American drummer Vinnie Appice, who stayed available during the Heaven and Hell Tour just in case Bill wasn't able to play. They loved the success of Heaven and Hell so much, it seems, that they tracked Mob Rules very similarly to H&H. They come charging out of the gate with Turn Up the Night (as opposed to Neon Knights), they go back tp doom Sabbath with the Sign of the Southern Cross (not dissimilar to Children of the Sea) and end with the epic title track (E5150, or in Latin EVIL, is really the intro to Mob Rules in our book). But it's all great Sabbath thanks to the soaring vocals of Ronnie James Dio, the groovy bass lines of Geezer Butler and some extraordinary work by The Riff-Master - Tonny Iommi. It fit perfectly with the H&H material and maybe Tony got some inspiration from the young lads in Iron Maiden as producer Martin Birch had just worked on Maiden's sophomore release Killers. The second side might not be as strong but the urgency and spectacular groove of Falling Off the Edge of the World galloping along to Ronnie's powerful and emotional vocals make it all time great Sabbath track. Though they would put this lineup back together for Dehumanizer in 1992 and again as Heaven and Hell in the 2000s, this would prove to be their only release during their heyday. The follow up live album Live Evil showed what an incredible lineup this was and it's sad to think it ended for cliched reasons but that's rock n roll. We celebrate Mob Rules and a killer Black Sabbath lineup as it turns 45. Show Notes: Nostalgia, Recorded at 5:45 in the Morning For their first dip into the 1990s Wilderness Years, John and Jim take on The Paradise of Death—the five-part BBC Radio serial that brought Jon Pertwee, Nicholas Courtney, and Elisabeth Sladen back together in 1993 for Doctor Who's 30th anniversary. It's a lavishly produced piece of nostalgia with everyone slipping effortlessly back into their roles, and Jim surprises himself by having far more to say about it than he expected. But it's also, both hosts agree, a real mixed bag—one that runs long enough to test even a devoted listener's attention. A Theme Park That Predicted the Future Space World, London's flashy new amusement park, runs on "ER"—Experienced Reality, a full-immersion virtual experience that the hosts note eerily anticipates where technology sits today. The opening episode earns near-universal praise from both hosts, complete with a sound effect for entering VR that somehow just works. From there, the story spirals out to an alien world, a corporation with sinister motives, gladiatorial games, and a plant with a very dark secret. When You Bring Back the Legends But Don't Give Them Much to Do Here's where the hosts wrestle with the production. Jon Pertwee shines and the female guest character, Onya, nearly steals the whole thing—but the Brigadier spends most of the story, as Jim dubs him, the "backseat Brig," and Sarah Jane is saddled with more victim duty (and with the widely loathed new photographer Jeremy Fitzoliver) than the fans would have liked. There's a debate about whether leaning on nostalgia alone is enough when the beloved characters aren't given real material, and a discussion of the ways Barry Letts's script reaches for a more "mature" register than classic TV Who ever did—some of it landing, some of it distinctly uncomfortable. A Continuity Snag Only a Barry Letts Could Introduce In a move that baffled fandom, the script stages a first-time introduction between two characters who had already met on screen. The hosts dig into exactly where and when that introduction really happened, why nobody in the room caught the error, and what it reveals about how much (or how little) oversight this side project got. There's a running argument that a Terrance Dicks-style continuity person could have saved the production from itself. Reverse the Polarity of the What Now? One creative choice genuinely sours Jim: the story pauses to deconstruct a certain beloved Third Doctor catchphrase, explaining away something that never needed explaining. It sparks a lively debate about which Doctor catchphrases should simply be left alone (Allons-y, my giddy aunt, brave heart) and whether taking the Mickey out of Pertwee's signature line crosses a line of its own. There's a happier callback later, too—a Venusian lullaby and a fondly remembered name from the Pertwee era that the hosts were delighted to hear. A Death That Actually Lands Amid the mixed feelings, the hosts single out a genuinely affecting moment of grief in the final episode—the kind of heartfelt reaction to a character's death that earlier Doctor Who so often skipped right past. It's a reminder of what the production gets right even as the hosts find their attention wandering through the sprawling later episodes. In this urgent conversation, Darin sits down with clinical psychologist, wisdom teacher, and conscious parenting pioneer Dr. Shefali Tsabary to confront what she sees as a crisis facing modern parents and children. Drawing from her work and her books Raising Conscious Daughters and Raising Conscious Sons, Dr. Shefali explains why connection and attunement between parent and child have become increasingly difficult in a world dominated by smartphones, social media, gaming, endless scrolling, pornography, algorithms, and AI. Dr. Shefali argues that parenting begins with the parent. Children look to their caregivers to understand themselves and regulate their internal worlds, but when adults themselves are distracted, overstimulated, and dysregulated, that connection becomes harder to create. She explains why simply taking a device away isn't enough: parents have to become willing to put down their own devices and replace digital stimulation with actual human presence. This week we note and mourn the passing of pediatric cardiologist and thought leader Dr. Steven Lipshultz who passed on September 4, 2026. Dr. Lipshultz was one of the most significant cardiologists of the past half century and his contributions to the fields of pediatric cardiomyopathy, HIV cardiomyopathy and cardio-oncology were gigantic and meaningful. This week we turn back the clock and review a landmark work of Dr. Lipshultz from the Pediatric Cardiomyopathy Registry that was published in 2003 in the NEJM and we speak with 3 pediatric cardiomyopathy experts as well as friends and colleagues of Dr. Lipshultz - namely Dr. Neha Bansal of NYU, Dr. Daphne Hsu of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Dr. Joseph Rossano of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
