He's still learning to walk again after ECMO caused major nerve damage in his legs- and we just went to see the musical he directed. Sometimes this world feels so dark right now but this made me incredibly happy. The night we had tickets for the show, we lost power, so we made it a full date night and went for dinner too. A visit from my cousin Gayle. We enjoyed a great pool day on Sunday and dinner in our town Monday night followed by a walk along the harbor. With over 200 fine artists, live music, kids’ activities, and even chalk art, it’s a can’t-miss event for art lovers and families alike. The Artist Market will feature works in every medium imaginable: oil, acrylic, pottery, jewelry, photography, and more. Artists will be on-site to chat about their process, and the beloved Painted Pots display returns with its stunning ceramic creations. For kids (and the young at heart), the Chalk Spot street art experience is back, hosted by Marietta High School’s Visual Arts Program and GPB. STORY 2: Marietta school board eyes AI guidelines in new technology plan The Marietta Board of Education is mulling over a new tech plan for 2025-2028, and it’s got some big ideas—AI guidelines, faster internet, and better tools for teachers. Jennifer Hernandez, the district’s academic achievement director, summed it up: “It’s about using tech to support teachers, not replace them.” The plan, shaped by feedback from teachers, parents, and community members, focuses on three areas: infrastructure, access, and support. Infrastructure? Think faster internet, updated equipment, and federal E-rate funding to keep it all running. “We don’t want to fall behind,” said tech director Torey Bradley. Access includes making learning platforms like Schoology easier to use and figuring out how to teach students and staff to use AI responsibly. Support will include a new professional learning hub with bite-sized training videos and resources for teachers and parents. The board plans to vote on the plan at its next meeting. STORY 3: Cobb officers recognized after saving children from 117-degree car  Cobb Police officers were recognized at the Georgia Capitol this week for saving two kids trapped in a sweltering car. On June 4, in the Cumberland Mall parking lot, bystanders spotted a boy and girl locked inside a vehicle and called 911. Officers arrived fast, smashed a window, and pulled the kids out. The car’s internal temperature? A staggering 117 degrees—on an 87-degree day. Gov. Brian Kemp and First Lady Marty Kemp commended the officers for their heroic actions. “This is what happens when citizens and officers work together,” the department shared on Facebook. The children’s guardian, J’quawn Dixon, was arrested and charged with leaving them in the car for 41 minutes without air conditioning. Gambrill called the improvements a “huge, huge impact.” What’s coming? Better ADA access, a much-needed extra restroom (parents, rejoice), and four new pickleball courts to add to the existing six. “Pickleball’s booming,” Gambrill said. The park, already a hotspot with baseball fields, tennis courts, and disc golf, sees over 13,000 kids for baseball alone. No timeline yet—officials are still ironing out details with the contractor. In recent years, more and more women have been speaking openly about their decision to not have children. There are numerous books on the subject, dedicated social media spaces for childfree women and an ever increasing media interest in sharing the stories of those who refuse to go down this well-trodden path. However, some of the lesser told childfree stories are those of older women, who went against the grain at a time when motherhood was not only expected of women, but regarded as central to their lives. In this episode, Róisín Ingle is joined by one such woman, 77 year-old writer and academic Helen Taylor, who from a very young age decided not to have children. In her new book Childless by Choice: The Meaning and Legacy of a Child-free Life, Helen shares her reasons for choosing to remain childfree and she unpacks the complex feelings that have accompanied her choice. Tonight's story comes from a mother named Sarah who reached out to me through a mutual acquaintance after years of keeping silent about what happened to her family in the remote forests of Alabama. When she first contacted me, she could barely get through the telling without breaking down, especially when describing the night she heard her own voice calling her youngest son into the darkness—while she was standing right beside him.Sarah and her two boys, ages ten and twelve, fled to an inherited cabin in the Bankhead National Forest to escape an abusive relationship. What should have been a healing retreat in nature became a two-month ordeal that defies conventional explanation. The creatures that stalked her family didn't just throw rocks or make strange vocalizations—they learned. They studied. They mimicked the family's voices with perfect accuracy, always trying to lure one of them outside.What makes Sarah's account particularly disturbing is the apparent intelligence behind these encounters. These weren't random animal behaviors but calculated attempts to separate and take her youngest son, Ben. The female creature that Sarah describes seemed to be mourning a lost child of her own, leading to questions about what these beings actually are and what they truly wanted with a human boy. The historical pattern Sarah uncovered in old newspaper archives—children vanishing in that exact area for decades—adds another layer of horror to her experience. Each disappearance left behind the same massive footprints that were always dismissed by authorities. Some reports even describe tall, hair-covered figures seen with smaller companions that looked almost, but not quite, human. Three years later, Ben still dreams about the "forest mommy" who called to him.At sixteen, he's drawn to wooded areas in ways that terrify his mother, and during a recent camping trip, teachers found him standing at the forest's edge at 3 AM, fully awake, listening to something only he could hear calling from the darkness.Sarah's story raises uncomfortable questions about the nature of these beings and their interest in our children. Are they simply animals operating on instinct? Or are they something more complex—intelligent enough to plan, patient enough to wait, and alien enough that we may never understand their true intentions?As always, I leave it to you to decide what you believe.
