In this episode of The Psych Files I explore ideas from Daniel Leviton's fascinating book, Your Brain on Music, especially those ideas concerned with what composers do to draw you into their music by first conforming to your musical expectations and then carefully confounding them in order to surprise and delight. I talk with guitarist and composer David Temple to get his perspective on this process as well. Along the way you'll hear excerpts from some fascinating pieces of music and David and I will discuss what makes them so compelling, especially those in the minor key. He expresses his admiration for Todd's ability to make readers both despise and love the main character simultaneously. The discussion then shifts to Todd's career as a professor and his role in directing the low-residency MFA program at UC Riverside. Todd shares his philosophy of teaching and his goal of positioning his students for success in the writing business. He emphasizes the importance of treating writing as commerce and not settling for struggling as an artist.David and Todd briefly touch on Todd's previous podcast, Literary Disco, which was highly regarded in the literary world. They mention that the podcast is currently on hiatus but may return in the future. The episode concludes with David asking Todd for his best piece of writing advice. Todd shares a valuable lesson he learned from author Donald Westlake: a story is over when the reader could write the next page. He explains that this advice has shaped his approach to writing and has led him to constantly surprise readers and avoid predictability.Overall, this episode of The Thriller Zone provides listeners with an engaging and insightful conversation about Todd Goldberg's writing career, his fascination with gangsters, and his approach to storytelling. To learn more about Tod visit his website: TodGoldberg.com and purchase his book on Amazon here. On this 145th episode of The Thriller Zone, I'm excited to be hanging out with yet another outstanding author of thriller fiction. Today, it's Taylor Moore, author of Ricochet. If you haven't heard of Taylor before, it may be because this is only his third book; however, there's one thing I can guarantee: you'll be hearing a LOT more from this phenomenal writer.Ricochet, the third in the Garrett Kohl Series, has everything you're looking for in a thriller: fast action, superb suspense, an intriguing premise, and a hero you can root for.Taylor had this to say about his somewhat new career: "I'm often asked how I ended up at the CIA, a question to which there are more than a few answers. But what I think people really want to know is what edged a regular guy like me out of the light and into the shadows of the intelligence world: a what makes you tick kind of thing. It's a question I can answer in one single phrase—passion for adventure. This is the same passion that drew me to childhood heroes like Indiana Jones, James Bond, and Jack Ryan. This quest for adventure propelled me on a solo journey at the age of twenty-four through the jungles of Bolivia, over the Andes, and across the raging Drake Passage on a Russian icebreaker to Antarctica. And it's the same passion I have now that spurs me to write thriller novels and action-adventure stories. We may grow up, but we don't have to give in. No matter our age or what we do, a good passion for adventure never dies. And if you're like me and you're searching for the next one, then look no further. You've arrived."Folks, you're in for a genuine treat, as Taylor introduces you (or reintroduces you) to a believable hero with smarts, and more than an ample amount of heart.Want to learn more about Taylor and his world? Welcome to one of the best podcast episodes of 2023. Why? Because my guest is the multi-award-winning New York Times bestselling author Don Winslow. With nearly two dozen novels under his belt, many of which have experienced international best-seller status, Don has spent a better part of 30 years honing his immense writing craft. With the debut of his "City Trilogy," which includes last year's smash hit, "City on Fire," followed up this year with "City of Dreams," the only thing left to do is to wrap the trifecta of narrative fiction tastiness with his "City In Ruins" that will release in 2024.But for now, I sit down with Don to spend an hour talking about his various series, many of which I've read, and my listeners have enjoyed for the past several decades. We discuss the art of writing, the writing community, what it takes to be a successful writer, and his best suggestions on crafting winning thrillers. Plus, perhaps some of the biggest news to cross our desks: Oscar-nom Austin Butler has been contracted to play Danny Ryan, the lead in the City Trilogy. Austin will likewise produce, alongside Don and his long-time friend and agent, Shane Salerno of The Story Factory. We also share a mutual passion for Jazz, and discuss that, as well as our love of New York City, both past and present; our appreciation of taking the time to do whatever it takes to make the very best product possible, and we discuss our mutual love of Los Olas Mexican Restaurant (an Encinitas/Cardiff mainstay). In the fun-and-games section of our show, called "Rapid Fire Questions" we learn what makes Don tick, as it pertains to his preference for writing (tools, music, and technique). And wait'll you hear whose three guests he would invite with him and Jean to dinner with Tammy and myself. All in all, I had a simply sublime time with a man whom I greatly admire, and am both humbled and honored to call "friend." And as I say near the end of the show, I consider him one of the most significant writers of my generation. To learn more about Don, visit his website at: DonWinslow.com. David Darling is an up-and-coming author, with several books under his belt, including the latest reality-bending thriller, Edge Of Time. He has been self-publishing for some time, now has an agent, and is "this close" to getting his career going. On today's 129th BONUS Episode of The Thriller Zone, David and I talk about his latest book, of course, but we also talk about life in Canada, his time of service in the Army, what it takes to be a writer today, his routine (read: substantial self-discipline), and much more.We discuss the "1,000,000 Words" aka 10,000 hour "rule" that many promote, as a way to gauge one's preparation for success. And along the way, we get his take on what it takes to be a success. All in all, it's a good time. David is a Thriller Zone fan, and he has always shown his support in so many ways. I suppose that's one of the reasons, besides his talents, I wanted to carve out some time with him. You'll enjoy his down-home approach, and clever sense of humor. And I hope you'll enjoy the bit of "Random Thoughts" I share at the very start of the show. I suppose it's a reflection of just one of the many ways I look forward to "broadening the scope" of this podcast. Let me know what you think, okay?To learn more about David, visit his website: DavidDarlingBooks.com, take a look around, and consider helping a creative guy who loves to write. His book drops on 4.25.I'm David Temple, host of TheThrillerZone.com, and I thank you for listening.
