Auto - Rund ums Auto.

¡Pues vamos a verlo!

The figuresstaggering – 544kW of power and 950Nm of torque from its plug-in hybridpowertrain – a combination of a twin turbo 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine paired withan electric motor and despite tipping the scales at nearly 2600 kilos powering to100km/hour in just 3.5-seconds. This German coupe style SUV feels absolutelybullet proof, with a 25.9kWh battery we are talking about a very sophisticatedPorsche. With all wheel drive, eight speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox, anadaptive electronic suspension, four available drive modes plus a verysophisticated traction management system this is a technically impressive upperluxury SUV – and the coupe style gives it a sporty profile to match theperformance capability. If I had a criticism, option prices on the test car tallied$42,000, some simply over the top like the Porsche crest on the headrests $950for branding, barely what you should consider an option. This aside, theperformance capability very impressive, details next segment. I'm David BerthonSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Driving the Porsche turbo Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe SUV today – the mostpowerful combustion engine Porsche available from $297,200. The best plug-inhybrid I've driven but given the price maybe understandable – enormouslycapable the turbo Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid Coupe ticks all the performanceboxes – powered by a combination of a 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 and a 130kWelectric motor - producing 544kW of power, a staggering 950 Nm of torque drivingall four wheels though an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic with four drive modes – inSport Plus mode its performance aggressive but with so much electronicsophistication just so accomplished – with a top speed potential of 295 km/hour –a plug-in hybrid with nearly 80kms of electric range and with charging on the overrun and through regenerative braking the best I've encountered in a plug-inhybrid – as an example, on a short 30 km drive I managed to recover 11km ofelectric range. The Porsche E-hybrid Coupe delivers highly competent handlingand braking yet a very comfortable ride in a cabin that oozes class and comfort. Asimply fabulous driver. An upper luxury Coupe style SUV that's hard to fault apartfrom some options that simply should be standard fare and a short three-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.

LG Chem plans to build a new factory in Europe BMW produced its 200,000th i3 model Four Car Charging Networks Join Octopus Energy Network   Show #912   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Tuesday 20th  October. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   MADE IN CHINA MODEL 3'S LEAVE FOR EUROPE NEXT TUESDAY "The first batch of Gigafactory Shanghai’s China-made Model 3 is about to begin their journey to Europe. The vehicles are reportedly en route to the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium, where they will be distributed to countries such as Germany and France." says Teslarati: "Recent reports from Chinese media have announced the shipment of thousands of Made-in-China Standard Range Plus Model 3s from Gigafactory Shanghai. As noted by Tesla owner-enthusiast @Ray4Tesla, the shipments will start next week on Tuesday, October 27. Tesla owner-enthusiast Armand Vervaeck suggested that the China-made Model 3s could be shipped by train to Europe due to the vehicles being fitted with protective wraps. Based on comments under Teslarati’s previous article, it seems that shipments by train would have an estimated arrival time of two weeks."   This does point to towards Model Y coming to Europe, if demand in China allows. And Model 3 from Fremont no longer has to do the 20 day journey down the West Coast, Mexico etc, through the Panama Canal and across the Atlantic. Plus the margin on those MIC cars is much better.   As a commenter notes: "Tesla can charge more for an SR+ in Europe vs China, LFP Version provides better margin compared to the US Model 3 might be battery cell constraint along with the model Y ramp. So to supply Europe, they can further diversify their cells. So I believe they bypass Chinese demand in favor of supplying Europe. Can't wait to see first European YouTube reviews about the MIC M3 build quality etc."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-china-export-europe-start-date/   TESLA RESEARCHERS PRESENT BATTERY WITH 2 MILLION MILE LIFECYCLE "Tesla battery researchers around Jeff Dahn have presented updated test results for their battery cells. Instead of one million miles, the batteries are now expected to last 10,000 cycles and provide traction power for more than two million miles – that’s about 3.2 million kilometers." says electrive: "With “special additives”, the batteries should be able to withstand 10,000 cycles. Assuming a relatively conservative 350 kilometer range per cycle (i.e., a full charge from 0 to 100 percent), this would be 3.5 million kilometers. Whether 3.2 or 3.5 million kilometers: the one million miles or 1.6 million kilometers announced in September 2019 seem to be clearly surpassed. If the batteries were only discharged by 25 to 50 per cent of their capacity, they would show almost no degradation. This is a charge level range that many electric car drivers use in practice – the battery is rarely discharged to less than 20 per cent, on the other hand, it is rarely charged over 80 per cent."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/10/19/tesla-researchers-present-battery-with-2-million-mile-lifecycle/   TESLA HAS OVER 120 OPERATIONAL MICROGRIDS "Tesla has over 120 operational microgrids around the world using its batteries and renewable energy, according to a new comment from an executive. Ever since the launch of Tesla Energy and its stationary energy storage products, Tesla started working on microgrid projects" says electrek: "Michael Snyder, director of engineering and construction, energy projects at Tesla, released the information in a Linkedin post about a new position on the microgrid team: If you like solving problems at the nexus of power systems interactions, protection coordination, system and product level controls, and DERs (Powerpacks, Megapacks, solar, and generators), check out the link below for a microgrid-focused product engineer. We have 120+ operational microgrids around the world with high impact to a variety of communities/customers. This is a unique and rewarding role."   https://electrek.co/2020/10/19/tesla-120-operational-microgrids-world/   TESLA EXPANDS CHARGING IN EUROPE Tesla’s Supercharger network has rapidly expanded since the beginning of the quarter with over 250 new Supercharging stalls located all over Europe, with around 240 of these being V3 Superchargers. All our chargers are placed on well-travelled routes which allow you to explore every corner of Europe. The Tesla Supercharger Network will continue to expand around the globe to enable all-electric journeys to be effortless.   PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO S E-HYBRID "Porsche has announced two new hybrid powertrains for its Panamera hatchback and Panamera Sport Turismo estate, bringing back the 4 E-Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid models to the range. These join the 4S E-Hybrid that was launched when the Panamera was facelifted a few months back" writes evo.co.uk: "The Turbo S E-Hybrid reclaims its position as the most powerful Panamera derivative, now peaking at 690bhp, 9bhp more than before. The extra power is derived from the 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine at the core of the powertrain, which on its own produces 563bhp. Despite its near 2500kg kerb weight, the Turbo S E-Hybrid will reach 62mph in 3.2sec (0.2sec quicker than the previous model) and go on to 196mph, while also being able to cruise for up to 31 miles on the electric motors alone. "The German plugin vehicle market had another record month in September, with a little over 41,000 registrations. Plugin hybrid (PHEV) registrations continued going through the roof, up 463% to 20,127 units" reports Clean Technica: "The plugin vehicle share reached a record 16% (8% fully electric vehicles/BEV), pulling the yearly tally to 10% (4.8% BEV), so this market has officially reached double digits, also known as … The Disruption Zone."   Zoe, Model 3, ID.3, Mercedes GLC300e and Kona EV   https://cleantechnica.com/2020/10/19/16-plugin-vehicle-market-share-in-germany/   LG CHEM PLANS TO BUILD A NEW FACTORY IN EUROPE Reuters says: "LG Chem is looking for a site to build a new factory in Europe, as it plans to more than double its global car battery capacity to 260 gigawatt hours (GWh) by 2023, from 120 GWh this year."   "LG Chem already has two battery cell plants in Europe and both are in Poland where most of LG Chem’s global battery cell production is located. If production capacity is expanded at its already operating plants, LG Chem can produce 120 GWh annually and this would be enough to assemble more than 2 million (2.400.000) battery packs with 50 kWh each." according to PushEVs: "With a third battery cell plant in Europe LG Chem expects to reach a global annual production capacity of 260 GWh by 2023. This would be enough to produce more than 5 million (5.200.000) battery packs with 50 kWh each."   https://pushevs.com/2020/10/19/lg-chem-plans-to-build-a-new-factory-in-europe/   BMW PRODUCED ITS 200,000TH I3 MODEL "The 200 000th BMW i3 model rolled off the production line yesterday – almost silently as always. The BMW i3s with Fluid Black metallic paint finish and accents in BMW i Blue was produced for a customer from Saxony and will be delivered by the BMW branch in Leipzig." "With the start of production in 2013, the plant in Saxony became a pioneer and centre of excellence for sustainable mobility. The BMW i3 was the BMW Group’s first purely electrically powered large-scale serial model and also the company’s first vehicle with a passenger cell made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic"   https://electriccarsreport.com/2020/10/bmw-produced-its-200000th-i3-model/   FOUR CAR CHARGING NETWORKS JOIN OCTOPUS ENERGY NETWORK Octopus Energy announces that four electric vehicle (EV) charging firms have joined its Electric Juice Network in a bid to simplify on-street charging. The Group is planning to launch almost 70 new electric models in the next ten years – instead of the 50 previously planned. As a result, the projected number of vehicles to be built on the Group’s electric platforms in the next decade will increase from 15 million to 22 million. Expanding e-mobility is an important building block on the road to a CO2-neutral balance. Volkswagen has signed off a comprehensive decarbonization program aimed at achieving a fully CO2-neutral balance in all areas from fleet to production to administration by 2050. Volkswagen is thus fully committed to the Paris climate targets. In order to support the electric offensive, LG Chem, SKI, CATL and Samsung were selected as strategic battery cell suppliers. In view of the constantly increasing demand, Volkswagen is also taking a close look at possible participation in battery cell manufacturing facilities in Europe. Looking further ahead, solid-state batteries also have great potential. The goal is to enable an industrial level of production with this technology together with our partner QuantumScape.   https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2019/03/VW_Group_JPK_19.html   Porsche Next-Gen Batteries Set To Provide Huge Electric Range A quote for Porsche: "The next generation of batteries will come in 2020, and will bring an increase in the ampere hours of our battery cells from 37 to 47. This will permit us to achieve larger ranges, which we will gradually introduce into our products." A Steven Loveday article on InsideEVs.com today: "Porsche CEO Oliver Blume revealed in a recent interview that the company has next-gen batteries already set for next year. These new batteries will eventually make their way into Porsche’s upcoming plug-in electric vehicles. While Blume did say that the new battery cells will go into Porsche vehicles as soon as next year, the automaker is putting greater effort into getting its upcoming Taycan launched first. The automaker already has some 20,000 people interested in the vehicle. It announced not long ago that due to the high demand, it will increase production pursuits." According to Electrek, the CEO noted that the company may try to get customers into a temporary Panamera Plug-In Hybrid if they have to wait too long for their Taycan to arrive. He explained: "If there are waiting times, we might take the opportunity to gently introduce customers to the Taycan; so for example, we could make a Panamera plug-in hybrid temporarily available to customers before they receive a Taycan. But right now we’re awaiting the start of production before we talk about specific delivery times."   https://insideevs.com/porsche-next-gen-batteries-huge-range/   Bentley Flying Spur PHEV Caught Recharging Its Battery News on the new Bentley Flying Spur: "the new generation will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain joining the familiar V8 and W12 versions of the luxobarge. The prototype was caught charging its battery pack, which will be a part of a PHEV system likely inherited from the Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid." Says Adrian Padeanu for MOtor1.com: "It is believed the PHEV variant will also offer a pure electric mode, although the battery pack’s juice (14.1 kWh in the case of the Panamera) won’t last for more than 30 miles (48 kilometers). The version with the two fuel caps will be the most economical Flying Spur of the bunch taking into consideration Bentley doesn’t have plans to install a diesel engine underneath that long and imposing hood."   https://www.motor1.com/news/308990/bentley-flying-spur-phev-spied/   Almost 75% Of Electric Car Sales In U.S. Were Teslas In February 2019 Mark Kane at InsideEVs.com as the estimated February U.S. sales figures: In February 2019, Tesla sold about 7,650 all-electric cars (InsideEVs’ estimation) in the U.S., which is 67% more than a year ago. As the overall plug-in market didn’t grow much last month, Tesla further increased its market share. Tesla results: Tesla Model 3 – 5,750 (12,250 YTD), Tesla Model X – 1,100 (2,050 YTD), Tesla Model S – 800 (1,675 YTD). Tesla holds a huge stake in plug-in car market – in February it was roughly 44% out of the total of 17,239! In the case of the all-electric car segment, Tesla’s share is 74% and it’s expected to exceed 80% again when volume deliveries of the Standard battery Model 3 version begin."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-sales-high-february-2019-u-s/   PEUGEOT e-208: price and availability "According to the French auto magazine L’Argus the PEUGEOT e-208 will have a starting price of 31.000 euros. Moreover, PEUGEOT expects the all electric variant (e-208) to represent 15 % of the new PEUGEOT 208’s sales. Last year 230.049 PEUGEOT 208 were sold in Europe, 15 % would be 34.507 cars, therefore less than Renault ZOE." According to Pedro at PushEVs: "the PEUGEOT e-208 is undeniably an appealing electric car, however I think that the Renault ZOE 2.0 will be more successful. Not only the production capacity for it will be higher, but specs are also expected to be better. According to Automobile Propre the new ZOE 2.0 will have a 61 kWh battery, which will put it in Kia e-Soul and Hyundai Kona Electric’s territory. Moreover, the 22 kW on-board charger gives it an unrivaled practicality." He also says in the comments: "While DC fast chargers are rare and expensive, public 22 kW EVSEs and common and most are free to use. That’s why I think that the 22 kW on-board charger is great to save money. Charge for free and relatively fast at commercial areas while shopping or watch a movie."   https://pushevs.com/2019/03/12/peugeot-e-208-price-and-availability/   Tesla Reportedly Talking With CATL For China Battery Order "There’s little doubt Tesla is going to explode in China, but there’s a lot the company needs to put in place. For starters, finishing construction of its Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai. But also, assuring there are battery suppliers in the area that intend to work with it." Reports Steven Loveday for InsideEVs.com: "We always take these Automotive News announcements with a grain of salt. This is because Tesla CEO Elon Musk usually comes forth on Twitter saying these announcements aren’t true. Sad but true, but still, we must share what’s reported, and in this case it’s positive once again. As reported by Automotive News: CATL has been discussing the required specifications for the batteries with Tesla officials, the people said, asking not to be named because the talks are private. Still, there’s no guarantee that an agreement will be reached, according to the people. Tesla Inc. is in talks about ordering rechargeable batteries from top Chinese producer Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. to power Model 3 cars the U.S. electric automaker plans to start assembling at its new factory near Shanghai, people familiar with the matter said."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-talking-catl-china-battery-order/   Tesla acquires car-hauling trucks and trailers "A recent Form S-3 submitted to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has revealed that Tesla is acquiring car carrier trucks and trailers from a California-based trucking company using over $13 million worth of Tesla shares." Says Simon at TEslarati: "Tesla’s acquisition of Central Valley Transport’s trucks will help the company optimize the delivery of its vehicles. The electric car maker’s efforts to improve its delivery processes was highlighted in the third quarter of 2018, at a time when Tesla was just getting the hang of producing the Model 3 at scale. Elon Musk noted then that Tesla has moved from “production hell” to “delivery logistics hell,” referencing the company’s struggles to get the vehicles it was producing to delivery centers where they can be picked up by their owners. To help the company address its logistics issues, Musk noted that it even started building its own car carriers to help move as many vehicles as possible."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-car-carrier-hauling-trucks-trailers/   Fisker teases $40,000 mass-volume EV to be revealed on March 18 Announcing our "close" to $40,000 pure electric vehicle with a teaser picture & some tech details on March 18th. #fisker #ElectricVehicle #batterytech #EVs #automotive #cars #affordableev pic.twitter.com/GuJYAQTA4C — Henrik Fisker (@henrikfisker) March 8, 2019 "Based on the teaser photo and Fisker's comments about the car, we're expecting a small crossover. To be built in the U.S. and expected to launch in 2021, this will be the company's volume model eventually aiming for several hundred thousand sales per year." Says Autoblog: "It will compete somewhere around the BMW X3 ICE category and Tesla Model Y EV segment. The only thing we know about its looks beyond the A-pillar and side mirror is Fisker's desire "to make it really futuristic-looking." At the same time, "it has to be very versatile because we obviously want to get into a certain high volume with the vehicle."   https://www.autoblog.com/2019/03/12/fisker-mass-market-ev-solid-state-battery-crossover/   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. Hello and welcome to the Monday 18th June edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   A TALE OF TWO HYBRIDS This weekend marked a lot of TV watching for me - the 24 hours of Le Mans. I know, dirty noisy polluting but if there was an electric version of the series of course I'd watch it instead. But well done to Toyota and the number 8 car of Fernando Alonso who won. And well done to Toyota for winning with a hybrid. There's 500hp from the combustion engine but 500hp from the electric powertrain, which gives it 4 wheel drive too, using a High-powered lithium-ion battery The second Hybrid I’ve been watching Fully Charged, and Jonny Smith goes for a smooth ride in a Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid. There is so much tech in the Porsche, but we're interested in the 14.1kWh battery. 4 hours to charge on a 3.6kW and 2.4hours on a 7.2kW charger. It is unashamedly a big nasty petrol car which is all about speed and noise but i love that Fully Charged featured it. Because hybrids will be a stepping stone for so many buyers. But as you can drive on EV power alone it won't be long before owners will want a full BEV.   ARE TESLA USING A TENT? DOES IT MATTER? After reporting the new yesterday that Tesla have built a third general assembly Model 3 line in just three weeks, as Elon tweeted around the time i record the show, after that a lot of comment surfaced online about WHERE the line was built. Namely - a tent. Not just any tent, this is a luxury tent. But this is California, you don't have to account for the 6 inches of snow we had here a couple of months ago. In particular this year has seen, at least to my eyes, more pure hatred for Tesla and Elon than I've ever seen. It seems you can't be an impartial observer, you've either drunk the koolaid or you want to see Tesla go bust and for their cars to all burn in hell. Of course the truth is they make great cars and yes, they'll make mistakes along the way which we need to hold them accountable for in the right way.   EVEN TRUMP FANS CAN'T IGNORE EVS  There was a great article over the weekend about EVs and politics on ThinkProgress. The problem is the typical people who feel like they SHOULD turning their noses up at the liberal, snowflakes who are buying electric cars, are really annoyed they're cheaper to run. And also that you can charge them from your solar panels, which is the ultimate sign of sticking it to the big government who want to keep you under the control of big power companies. "the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) reported that it is much cheaper to drive an electric car any distance than it is to drive a comparable car fuelled by gasoline. The DOE says “The average fuel cost savings for all states was 60%.” But, in reality, the savings are going to be much, much larger — probably 80 percent or more. As solar gets even cheaper — and penetrates more of the market — many places will end up with a lot of excess low-cost carbon-free power during the day." So whatever your politics, whether it's on the left or right, the socialists who care for each other and the environment, or the capitalists who want the best deal, it doesn't need to be politicised. EVs make sense for everyone.   CHEAPEST EV GETS A RANGE BUMP The Worlds cheapest EV is considered to the be Chinese SAIC Baojun E100, which would cost the equivalent of $7,300 if you could buy it in the US, after subsidies. But alas it's for Chinese buyers only. Now Baojun E100 on a single charge can drive up to 200 kilometers – about 50 miles more than before. The new figure compares with the reserve of electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric and BMW i3. But then again it's for two doors, a top speed of 62mph and a 40hp motor.   SHENZHEN EMBRACES ELECTRIC VEHICLES "Shenzhen, once known for spewing out dark clouds of toxic smoke, has done much to clean up and transformed into China’s most sustainable city, according to several research reports. In less than a decade, Shenzhen has reduced its average air pollution by around 50 per cent, according to city authorities." According to a report on SCMP.com "Shenzhen has made global headlines for being the first major city in the world to roll out an all-electric public bus fleet. In 2009, it was chosen as one of 13 Chinese cities to pilot a national new-energy vehicle programme. Today, the city has three times more electric buses than the entire fleet of all buses in New York, and nearly eight times the total of Los Angeles. Lau says the e-bus fleet is not just good for air quality, it represents the city being at the forefront of green novelty." They continue: "The city’s electric taxi fleet is substantial as well. Standing by a crossing in central Shenzhen, one would estimate that more than half of all taxis were e-cars from BYD, the Shenzhen-based battery and electric vehicle maker in which American tycoon Warren Buffett is an investor. The city’s transport commission said in December that 62.5 per cent of all taxis in the city were electric, with the goal to turn the fleet all-electric. All existing gas cars in the taxi fleet are on target to be replaced by EV's by 2020." And what can we learn from this? "Out of the world’s estimated 385,000 electric buses, 90 per cent are in China. Every five weeks, 9,500 brand new electric buses take to the roads in China. That’s the equivalent to the entire London bus fleet, according to Bloomberg Energy Finance data. Only 1.6 per cent of city buses in Europe are electric, and a smaller 0.5 per cent in the US."   ANOTHER JAGUAR EV - WITH A DIFFERENCE! More news from Jaguar and it's not about the I-PACE. "Jaguar’s battery-powered V20E boat just broke a maritime speed record" according to The Verge. "Peter Dredge, the co-founder of Jaguar Vector, piloted the boat at speeds of 88.62 miles per hour across eight miles of the Coniston Water lake in Cumbria, England. His speeds broke the previous record of 76.8 mph set ten years ago. The specifics of the battery, motor, and controller are unclear, but the team used similar hardware and technology that Jaguar uses in Formula E, the all-electric street racing series."   http://www.williamsf1.com/advanced-engineering/news/jaguar-vector-racing-break-maritime-electric-world-record-with-williams-advanced-engineering     COMMUNITY YouTube comments about blocking.   You can listen to every previous episode of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Thursday 17th May 2018. PORSCHE CAYENNE E-HYBRID REVIEW The first reviews are in for the Porsche Cayenne e-hybrid, ahead of the move of the legendary 911 to electrified power, so whether purists like it or not, battery power is here to stay. EVO has been my go-to magazine for performance car reviews for a long time and they're impressed: "There are now four driving modes to choose from: full electric (E-Power), Hybrid Auto, Sport and Sport Plus, all of which can be selected via the same rotational switch fitted to the steering wheel of Porsche’s range of sports cars. The default mode on start-up is full electric, which offers a range of between 14 to 27 miles on a full charge (up from 22 miles, with a full charge taking around 8 hours on a house hold plug). Switch to Hybrid mode and the Cayenne will adapt its use of the powertrain to suit the individual driving style of whoever is behind the wheel, switching between full electric and petrol-electric as and when it needs to, and with uncanny smoothness, too." As for environmental credentials, that's always hard for a gas burning SUV to argue, but: "The Cayenne E-Hybrid will return a theoretical 88mpg on the combined cycle while emitting just 72g/km (putting it 3g/km under the free congestion charge limit)."   TESLA WILL USE SIX-DAY SHUTDOWN TO FIX MODEL 3 ASSEMBLY LINE PROBLEMS We know Model 3 production line shut downs are coming, and now we have more details. Tesla will pause production at its California factory for six days at the end of the May to improve the Model 3 assembly line says inside sources who have spoken to Reuters. So far we've seen shut down in February and April to upgrade the factory. Musk has said the planned stoppages are intended to give the company time to perform upgrades that will help it reach a goal of building 6,000 vehicles per week by the end of June.   NISSAN LEAF NOW WITHOUT ENTRY-LEVEL VISIA TRIM Pedro at Push EVs has noticed something on the European Nissan websites: "At least in Portugal, Spain and France you can no longer order the entry-level Visia of the Nissan Leaf. With fewer trim levels to choose from, production complexity and costs are reduced. No need to waste time and resources to produce a trim level that customers don’t want. Acenta has always been the most popular trim level on the Nissan Leaf and it’s now the entry-level trim. I see this as good news, furthermore Nissan is not only adjusting the trim levels, but also the prices. Let’s see the evolution in Portugal." Indeed the UK Nissan site is also reporting the Acenta as the base model now with no sign of the Visia trim. The base model Acenta is from £25,190, the N-Connecta adds around view monitor, heated seats, 17” alloys wheels, privacy glass and electric door mirrors for £26,890. You can go up one more step to Tekna for ProPILOT assist, BOSE premium audio, leather front and rear heated seats, Full LED auto headlights and electronic parking brake from £28,390. They all of course come with e-pedal.   THE 'AUTOPILOT BUDDY' IS CRAZY Regardless of whether you think Autopilot is a good name for Teslas driving assist technology, implying it does more than it actually does, they do make it as idiot proof as possible. You are required to keep your hands on the steering wheel when it deems assistance necessary, and if you do not, it gives you a visual warning on the dashboard followed by an audible one. And if you really let it go too long, the car comes to a stop. But what if you could avoid all the need for being aware about what a two ton fast moving lump of metal and batteries was doing. That's exactly what one idiot thought when they designed a product for other idiots to buy. Welcome to Autopilot Buddy. It will run you $179 and is magnetic plastic that will attach to your wheel to fool the car into thinking your hands are on it. Now there's really nothing stopping you swapping seats - yes someone was recently banned from driving for doing that - or making youtube videos off you hanging out of the window at seed - yes someone has done that. Their website says: "Tesla owners were searching for ways to hack the autopilot or extend the autopilot features without voiding the warranty. “Autopilot Buddy” allows early adopters to once again enjoy autopilot for longer durations, by reducing or turning off the autopilot check-in warning." You would only buy this product to be less attentive at the wheel.   ELON MUSK HIRES TESLA INTERNS WHO HELPED SOLVE MODEL 3 PRODUCTION ISSUES Getting a Tesla internship is a dream for many engineering students, but what about when you spot something in the Model 3 process which improves production? In this case, it lands you a job offer from Elon Musk. According to Matthew Lane, one of the interns, speaking on CBC Radio: "“Essentially, it was a gating problem with the Model 3 production ramp. What had happened was we saw an opportunity to solve the problem. We came up with our own idea, and we actually sort of crashed the meeting with Elon himself and presented the idea. And, after speaking with him and one of his VPs, Doug Field, they essentially said ‘This is a good idea, but here’s the problem we are facing right now, so you guys go talk with us.’ And it snowballed from there,” he said. Mark Comeau added: "“So about a month and a half after that, we worked on this issue, brought things online. And then, literally at 10 a.m. Monday morning, the week after we’re finished, we received a message saying ‘Hey, head to Nevada to the Gigafactory.’ And, a five-hour car drive later, we arrived in Nevada, with a whole new situation and a whole new set of problems to address. “Elon is the type of CEO that is actually hands-on in the factory floor. He’s not one of those that sits on the ivory tower and just gets reports. He’s actually on the line, seeing the issues himself in person, and seeing what contributions people are making, and what the issues are. He doesn’t like to hear things second-hand. He likes everything first-hand knowledge. “So this issue had caused some delays with the production, so of course it was one thing that was always on his radar, and once we had figured it out and got it up and running reliably, he came by, and he had us walk through it. It’s probably one of the most unnerving experiences ever, because he’s the CEO of the company and here we are, just two interns. And, he’s basically like ‘Yep, you’ve got to stay.’”   NISSAN’S SOLAR AND BATTERY STORAGE SYSTEM HITS UK MARKET "Nissan’s solar and battery storage system is now available to buy for homeowners across the UK" according to Energy Live News: "consumers can choose to buy either new or second life batteries from Nissan EVs – the firm adds these will be used to give increased independence from the national grid and electricity suppliers as well as the ability to generate, store and manage energy for use overnight. The cost of the solar and storage package starts at £3,881."   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Monday 7th May 2018.  NORWAY IS NO LONGER THE BEST EUROPEAN MARKET FOR ELECTRIFIED CARS You may know that in March Norway reported that 56% of all new car sales were EV's, and then on yesterday’s show, that was down to below 50% but it's still very respectable. However one consequence is that Norway is no longer Europe's number one for EV sales. So who is? That honour goes to the home of diesel makers, Germany. CarBuzz reports: "EV sales increased 70 percent in the first quarter of this year, for a total of 17,574 vehicles sold. It’s important to note, however, this figure not only includes pure electric vehicles, but also plug-in hybrids as well. Two of the most popular EVs in Germany include the BMW i3 and Nissan Leaf, while the BMW 2-Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid, which isn’t sold in the US, is also a very common sight. Norway remains Tesla’s third-biggest market after the US and China"   NISSAN JOB FEARS AS CAR MAKER PUTS BRAKES ON DIESEL SALES IN EUROPE Whilst I always want this show to be about how you and I are interested in electrifying transport, and sometimes about the industry around the cars, EV's don't exist in a vacuum which means when they're on the rise, you have to ask about what's going down. And the answer is diesel. Whilst it was never big deal in the USA, many European countries quickly rose to 50% market share as governments saw it as a way to reduce CO2, whilst ignoring NOx. Some countries like France, Italy and Germany has far larger market shares. Now that's all changing. Now a report in the Telegraph says Nissan: "will not put diesel engines in future models of its car as it adapts to a sharp decline in diesel vehicle sales. Japan’s national public broadcaster NHK reported that Nissan would stop selling diesel in Europe as part of its aim to sell one million electric vehicles a year by 2022. A Nissan spokesman could not be reached for comment. Car industry figures have blamed the Government for “demonising” diesel, which has resulted in sales of the cars in the UK nosediving. While UK new car sales rebounded in April after a year-long slump, diesel sales continued to plunge, suffering a 25pc year-on-year drop. Diesel’s market share of sales last month fell to 31pc from 45pc a year ago."   AUDI’S ‘BETA’ WEBSITE REVEALS MORE One of the behind the Fully Charged YouTube channel, who goes by @FullyChargedDan on Twitter, found the Beta site for the new Audi e-tron Quattro was live. And he spotted: Arrives early 2019, • 370 kW / 310 mile range from 95kWh battery, • Integrated solar cells in roof that generate electricity for the air conditioning and heated seats, • 80% charge in 30 minutes, “THRILLING EXPERIENCE IF YOU’RE ONLY USED TO COMBUSTION POWER.”   THE PORSCHE CAYENNE E-HYBRID IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE GAS MODELS The Verge has a very interesting article you should read about the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid pointing out how important it is the future of the brand; "In addition to all of the weight savings introduced on the third-generation car, the Cayenne E-Hybrid will also boast the newly introduced technology, such as a trio of digital displays in the dashboard for driving information, navigation, and a new off-road app. Energy and efficiency displays are also included as part of the E-Hybrid package. Starting from $79,990, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid may not sound like an important car for the masses. There are other, less expensive plug-in hybrid SUVs already on the market. But for Porsche’s reputation as an electric vehicle manufacturer, it’s the way most of its customers will experience technology in the near future."   WHY PLUG-IN HYBRIDS ARE BETTER THAN ALL-ELECTRIC CARS Finally, Douglas May at Torque News really nails the use case for a PHEV: "for those of us who actually own electric cars, we quickly realize that long electric ranges are not necessary because your home is the "gas station" where you plug it in each night to charge the battery. In fact, all you really need is a battery just big enough to cover your daily commute and no more! For most people, that means an electric range of 20-50 miles will do just fine. The best way to describe a Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) is "Electricity for your daily commute and gasoline for your long weekend getaways". “This combination makes sense for two reasons. 1) Lithium-Ion batteries are very heavy. A Tesla battery weighs 1,200 lbs in which you are only using 10-15% of it on a daily commute basis. That means you are lugging around 1,000 lbs of unused batteries which is the equivalent of hauling three full size refrigerators in your everyday commute! 2) And when you are making those infrequent weekend getaways, filling up at a gas station is still far more convenient than waiting 1-4 hours at a charging station assuming it's even available. When those Tesla Model 3s become popular, line-ups at freeway charging stations will invariably become common. With a PHEV, you can switch back to gasoline mode for those infrequent weekend getaways and don't have to worry about long lineups or non-existent charging stations. Sunday 25th March 2018. TESLA ‘SLOW DOWN’   Elon Musk is having a killer week on social media. Well, Twitter. That would be because just joined the #deletefacebook movement and axed both the Tesla and SpaceX pages. Next he has been busy responding to comments and his mentions. The most recent being a response to an Electrek story within minutes of it going live. Electrek said Tesla is: “experiencing capacity issues so they are instead going through Gothenburg port and having to use more trucks to move the cars to its stores and service centres. According to several media reportsin Norway, over half a dozen of those trucks have been stopped by the authorities for a variety of safety reasons during inspections and one of the trucks that wasn’t stopped ended up in an accident. According to registration data, Tesla delivered only just over 300 vehicles in Norway during the first two months of the year, but it already delivered almost 1,000 vehicles in March with still one week to go. However then Electrek has to update the article as Elon directly replied to their article, despite Tesla’s already having issued an official statement. Elon said: “I have just asked our team to slow down deliveries. It is clear that we are exceeding the local logistics capacity due to batch build and delivery. Customer happiness & safety matter more than a few extra cars this quarter.” So can we read anything into “a few extra cars”. Does that mean they’re working hard to meet earnings call targets, or just that it’s the usual end of quarter increase?   FIVE EVS COLD WEATHER TESTED IN NORWAY  The Norwegian EV Association has tested five electric cars in winter weather to see how they coped. The cars they tested were the BMW i3, Hyundai Ioniq Electric, 2018 Nissan Leaf, Opel Ampera-e (aka Chevrolet Bolt EV) and Volkswagen e-Golf. Greencarreports noted: “The conclusion of the test drivers was that "none of the cars is best for all" drivers. The best car for an individual driver will depend on how it's used, and that buyer's tastes and desire for comfort and amenities. That said, the "most discussed" cars during the test were the Chevy Bolt EV-derived Opel Ampera-e and the Hyundai Ioniq Electric. The South Korean car, the testers noted, delivered almost as much effective range in cold weather as the new-generation Nissan Leaf (despite the difference in their EPA-rated ranges: 124 miles vs 151 miles). A further factor in the Hyundai's favour was its ability to fast-charge at up to 100 kilowatts under certain circumstances, higher than the 50-kw limit on the rest of the cars, including the new 2018 Leaf. And a side note on the LEAF, this week has seen Youtube videos of drivers who, after a couple of rapid charges, found the Battery Management System (BMS) slowing down their charge rates. With 20,000 new LEAFs sold you have to remember it’s a handful of people but, as they’re often EV enthusiasts, they also know a lot about what they’re talking about. I’m not going to comment as I have no first hand experience of it, but we’ll wait for a response from Nissan.   NEXT PORSCHE CAYENNE HYBRID ON VIDEO Porsche has confirmed in a Youtube video that the Cayenne will return in hybrid form, as part of their new redesigned model. Digitaltrends say: “expect the Cayenne to use the same plug-in hybrid powertrains offered in the Panamera. That means the standard model will get the setup from the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, including a 2.9-liter twin-turbocharged V6 and eight speed dual-clutch transmission with integrated electric motor”   COBALT-NICKEL BATTERY According to New Scientist Magazine, German company BASF is also working on improved cobalt-nickel battery technology that will provide the sought-after experience of a charging station that works as quickly as a gas fill-up and which provides roughly 300 miles of range in a standard EV. “You will be able to recharge your electric sports car in the time it takes to drink a coffee, then drive 500 kilometers before needing to top up,” the magazine reported. When an EV requires no more investment in time and planning than a gas-powered car, and costs far less to operate, it will become a true game-changer for the automobile industry. It’s not here yet, but people all over the world are working on it and making progress.   EVS COULD POWER 300,000 UK HOMES Energy provider OVO published a report which, according to Renewable Energy Magazine: “Based on the number of Nissan LEAF electric cars on UK roads at present, the research found that new vehicle-to-grid chargers could enable the cars’ owners to contribute more than 114 MW to the National Grid at any time; enough to power approximately 300,000 homes. The research further showed that 38 percent of UK adults that own or intend to purchase a car in the next 12 months and were not aware that you could purchase this type of charger, would be more likely to buy an electric vehicle if they could use their car as a virtual power station.” And that’s interesting, because you can’t. It doesn’t matter if 100% of people were aware of V2G, I can’t pop down the shops and buy a box which runs my house from my LEAF.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
