If you're going to take six years to develop an international exposition and build an artificial island for it, maybe open it in an off-year when there isn't an official world's fair on the other coast. The Golden Gate International Exposition opened in 1939, competing with the 1939 New York World's Fair. (Spoilers: they did run out of money and closed early in October 1939, then scrounged up a little more to reopen May-September 1940.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Gate_International_Exposition3. For the purposes of crossover with Melinda's stories about fairy munchkins, hamquatches, reptilibugs and the pets of our extended family, let's assume Fritz is actually my sister-in-law's dog playing the trombone. He's not a Nazi, just playing a part.3. When I was searching for a “sad trombone” on freesound dot org, I found 91 sound trombone samples stretched and modified by user PhonosUPF. In our world, the US agreed in a 1977 treaty to gradually give control of the canal to the nation of Panama, planning the handoff to be complete in 1999.3. Kids These Days might not be aware that until the end of the Twentieth Century, every American city and town and village had a directory called a “phone book” which was distributed to the public and which doxxed everyone who had a phone, listing their phone number and address. You could pay the phone company to be "unlisted," to exclude your name, number or address from the phone book. This was not considered a bribe or extortion because people had not yet reached a consensus that too many people had been stalked or killed over the decades. The introduction of cell phones seems to have changed that paradigm. What makes torpedoes move faster? This Gun in My Hand!Show Notes:1. This episode was inspired by “Journey Into Fear,” an episode of The US Steel Hour of Mystery starring Lawrence Olivier and broadcast on June 9, 1946, which was adapted from the 1940 novel by Eric Ambler.https://www.oldtimeradiodownloads.com/thriller/the-hour-of-mystery/journey-into-fear-1946-06-092. No, it's not my impression of a Greek accent. The lines from Mithrodopolis in this episode are my impression of the guy from that 1946 broadcast of Journey Into Fear, doing an unidentifiable accent that's all over the place. I actually tried to sound like David Lander's character from On the Air, a 1992 David Lynch tv comedy that only aired 3 episodes in the US.3. “Mon petit chou” was an expression I heard not in high school French class, but from my mother. She had learned it from her father who landed at Normandy three to six days after D-Day. He drove a refrigerated supply truck. Or maybe that's vampire rules, entering without an invitation. While we're debunking legal myths, you can ask an undercover cop if they're a cop, they are not required by law to tell you. This episode is a spin-off from the fake commercial “Henley's Away to Shropshire” in episode 73, and partly inspired by season one of Sanditon.2. Another example of rich or middle class Brits taking strange children into their homes is Wuthering Heights. I'm aware of the fan theory that Heathcliff is an illegitimate son of Mr. Earnshaw, which explains why Earnshaw would favor the boy over his own children. But the cover story Earnshaw apparently expects everyone to believe is that he adopted a kid off the street at random. As Eighteenth Century Brits were wont to do, I guess?3. Lord Pelennor uses the word “arse,” so it's not cussing by American standards even though they pronounce it exactly the same way as that other word. Not going to mark this episode as having “explicit language.” Credits:The opening music was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. “Hit Man,” a new film directed by Richard Linklater, is not, in fact, about a hit man. The movie follows Gary Johnson (Glen Powell), a mild-mannered philosophy professor who assists law enforcement in sting operations by posing as a contract killer—and playing on the expectations stoked by Hollywood. On this episode of Critics at Large, Vinson Cunningham, Naomi Fry, and Alexandra Schwartz discuss the history of the archetype, from the 1942 noir “This Gun for Hire” to Tarantino's “Pulp Fiction” and the “John Wick” franchise, and explore why audiences have so enthusiastically embraced a figure that, contrary to the media's depiction, is basically nonexistent in real life. “It's a fantasy of what would happen if our rage was optimized, much like our sleep and our work day and our workouts,” says Fry. “And if it comes with a side of wearing a suit that looks great—even better.” Read, watch, and listen with the critics:“Collateral” (2004)“Pulp Fiction” (1994)“No Country for Old Men” (2007)“Hit Man” (2024)“Dazed and Confused” (1993)“Hit Men Are Easy to Find in the Movies. Violent Vacation with Peruvian Nuns was a tape released by the UK skate/thrash band The Stupids in 1986. In the village where I grew up (literally, legally a “village”), I was not on the cutting edge of knowledge about hardcore punk. The only radio stations within range were top 40, oldies or country, except for a freeform college radio station from Ann Arbor. When my family took a month long road trip in maybe summer 1988, we stopped a few days in San Diego. I might have passed over this tape at the swap meet, never heard of The Stupids before, but the cover had a cartoon of a twitching guy in a wheelchair by Don Martin. Great music, problematic pseudonyms and album titles, probably problematic lyrics but who can understand what Brits are singing? And I bet they used the cartoon without paying Don Martin or Mad Magazine. This Gun in My Hand!Show Notes:1. One of my earliest radio plays was a group project for Creative Writing class in high school, probably 1989. My friends Jeff, Julian and I wrote a script parodying Star Trek, cobbled together from jokes we had probably absorbed reading Mad Magazine. Only five or ten minutes long, we recorded it on tape and played it in class. I'm not sure why Mr. Groesser apologized to the class afterwards, maybe because of the bad language like “Damn!” or “Bloody Hell!” At one point Jeff did the voice of a vendor at a baseball game, calling out, “peaNUTS! Popcorn!” maybe to hint at how large the ship is. I tried to recreate his delivery here. When Julian's girlfriend heard the tape, she asked what girl we had cast for the voice of Uhura. She wouldn't believe I had done it. No effects software to raise the pitch, I did it all in the delivery.2. Dialogue in this episode was taken from His Girl Friday. (Link below.) It's excellent but has (CONTENT WARNING) the kind of racism and sexism you might expect in a 1940 film. There's also a one hour Lux Radio Theater adaptation starring Fred MacMurray and Claudette Colbert; a Screen Guild Theater radio adaptation starring Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell squeezed down into a half hour; and an even more offensive, grittier 1970 film of The Front Page starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. And there's a 1931 film version of The Front Page which I have yet to watch.https://archive.org/details/his_girl_fridayCredits:The opening music clip was from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), with transitional music from His Girl Friday (1940) and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), all films in the public domain. Anachronism: according to Vogue India, “Designers Salvatore Ferragamo, Roger Vivier and André Perugia have all been credited with inventing the stiletto [heel], sometime between 1948 and 1954.” As so often happens in Parabellum City, Sickubus is a little ahead of her time.https://www.vogue.in/content/the-history-of-the-stiletto3. Catch-2022 paraphrases the “snails and oysters” innuendo from the bath scene from Spartacus (1960), which no one in 1939 would recognize. In fact, the scene was censored from the original release and wasn't widely available to the public until a restored version in 1991.4. While the actress Veronica Lake dealt with her share of trauma, her life was not quite the tragedy that it has long been rumored to be. Before she hit her mid-twenties she had appeared in six bonafide classic films, including Sullivan's Travels, a series of noirs with Alan Ladd starting with This Gun for Hire, I Married a Witch and So Proudly We Hail. She left Hollywood behind, but never stopped working on the stage and in television, while pursuing the life she was unable to have as a young star. There was no consensus or large group of credible scientists in the Twentieth Century claiming that another ice age was coming soon. It was always a fringe belief. I'm not using a handful of Erich Von Däniken-adjacent crackpots to argue against the overwhelming scientific consensus today about impending climate catastrophe. It's just funny that the tiny minority of ice age warners were so wrong.2. Fascinating article about honey bee sex. Did you know that male bees have no father, they do have a grandfather, they can be fathers to daughters, granddaughters and grandsons, but they can't have sons?https://wisconsinpollinators.com/Bee/BA_HoneyBeeSex.aspx3. It kills me that The Green Hornet radio show had episodes about narrowly focused crimes like the vanity publishing racket, the citizenship papers racket, a protection racket that bombed fruit stands, a protection racket that bombed gas stations, and another protection racket for parking lot attendants.4. When I was in elementary school in the late 1970s, there was a big fuss locally about banning kids from selling or possessing red hot cinnamon toothpicks in school. Basically toothpicks boiled in flavored water or syrup and you chew or suck on them like gum. I don't remember if the danger was that some kids were allergic or poking themselves or each other or swallowing them, or just that students selling things was “disruptive” unless it was girl scout cookies or book sales.5. It's true that the publishers of The Spider magazine briefly issued a magazine named after his nemesis, The Octopus. In this episode, The Cuttlefish assumes that the magazine went on hiatus, taking a long time to publish its second issue, but a second issue never came. Only one issue was published in 1939 before changing its name to The Scorpion. 3. “The Sinister Ray,” Chapter Five of Shadow of Chinatown (1936) is available on Youtube, along with the rest of the series. 4. In which episodes did you hear about those animal and insect classifications? Mollusks in episode 76; cephalopods in episode 77; arthropods in episode 74; kinkajous in episode 75; hemiptera and hymenoptera in episode 74.5. It's possible that an ad for the real Johnson Smith Company's mail order catalog appeared in The Octopus magazine. It was really located at 6615 East Jefferson Ave, Detroit 7 Michigan in the 1930s. The idea that they offered a mail order training course on biological taxonomy is fictional. 6. That dissertation and its author are legit, and might have been published on microfilm in 1939. Not when it comes to microfilm.Credits:The opening and middle transitional music clips were from The Sun Sets at Dawn (1950), and the closing music was from Killer Bait (1949), both films in the public domain. Lee and Daniel are back to talk about two films suggested by listener Jeff Williams, featuring sexy and dangerous females. First up it is the classic film noir "This Gun for Hire" (1942), and then they move on to talk about an interesting B-western, "Woman They Almost Lynched" (1953). Thinly veiled fetish material; proto-feminism; cat fights; Confederate soldiers portrayed as heroes in westerns of this era; and the recasting of a modern remake of "Woman..." are just a few of the things brought up, as well as listener comments. Despite a tragically short career, Laird Cregar made his mark with several memorable big screen performances in films like This Gun for Hire and The Lodger. With his massive frame, Cregar was a natural fit as “heavies,” but he appeared in a variety of roles in comedies, adventures, and historical dramas. But it was frustration with his size that led him to a dangerous crash diet - one that ultimately took his life. We'll hear Cregar in both of his visits to Suspense - "The Last Letter of Dr. Bronson" (originally aired on CBS on July 27, 1943) and "Narrative About Clarence" (originally aired on CBS on March 9, 1944).

ROBERT WAGNER TALKS ABOUT HIS BOOK YOU MUST REMEMBER THISRobert Wagner is one of the most popular and successful stars in the entertainment industry, boasting three hit series and an impressive list of both feature and television films. As a young man under contract to 20th Century Fox, Wagner was cast by Darryl F. Zanuck in "With a Song in My Heart." Although the part lasted a scant minute, his performance as a crippled soldier responding to the song of Susan Hayward brought immediate public reaction to the studio. Spencer Tracy saw him in "Beneath the Twelve Mile Reef" and requested Wagner for the role of his son in "Broken Lance." Tracy was so impressed with Wagner, he cast him as his brother again in "The Mountain." A small sample of his numerous film credits includes "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story," "The Pink Panther," "The Curse of the Pink Panther," "Midway," "The Towering Inferno," "Banning," "Harper," "Prince Valiant," "The True Story of Jesse James," and "All the Fine Young Cannibals." He recently re-created his role of "Number Two," the villainous henchman to Dr. Evil, the archenemy of Mike Myers' title character in "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me." Antonio Banderas also directed Wagner in "Crazy in Alabama." In 1998, the actor was in "Wild Things," starring Matt Dillon and Kevin Bacon. On television, Wagner has starred on three long-running series, "It Takes a Thief," with Fred Astaire, "Switch," with Eddie Albert and Sharon Gless and "Hart to Hart," with Stefanie Powers. He was nominated for an Emmy for his role as Alexander Mundy in "It Takes a Thief". Since the end of the regular run of the series, the actor has produced eight "Hart to Hart" movies for both NBC and cable's Family Channel. He also starred with Jaclyn Smith in the top-rated miniseries "Windmills of the Gods," based on Sidney Sheldon's best-selling novel; with Angie Dickinson in the miniseries "Pearl"; with Audrey Hepburn in "Love among Thieves"; with Lesley Anne Down in "Indiscreet" and in "North and South III," with Joanne Woodward in "A Kiss Before Dying"; and with Elizabeth Taylor in "There Must Be a Pony," which he also executive-produced. Wagner was chosen by Sir Laurence Olivier to star with him in the television adaptation of "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," in which he costarred with his wife, the late Natalie Wood. Wagner also teamed up with Sir Laurence Oliver in "This Gun for Hire," Danielle Steel's "Jewels" and "To Catch a King."In addition to all his film and television ventures, Wagner has toured the world performing A.R. Gurney's "Love Letters", with Stefanie Powers, who were the first to launch the tour Internationally. Currently, Wagner performs "Love Letters" at charity events with his wife, actress Jill St. John.Wagner enjoys golfing and spending time with his 3 daughters, Katie (Television Personality), Natasha (Actress) and Courtney (Artist). The legendary actor and bestselling author of Pieces of My Heart offers a nostalgic look at Hollywood's golden age! With a career spanning more than five decades, few actors are more qualified to recount the glamorous Hollywood era of the late 1940s and early 1950s than Robert Wagner. You Must Remember This is Wagner's ode to a bygone age, to its incomparable style and how it was displayed, and to its legendary stars.Wagner revisits the houses, restaurants, and other haunts of Hollywood's elite, offering an intimate view of their lives on and off screen. He fondly recounts mythic figures simply entertaining at home among friends, away from the publicity machine and public eye that morphed into today's paparazzi culture. Wagner also discusses the business of Hollywood and its evolution from an industry once dominated by moguls to one run by agents, and examines the career arcs of his peers, carefully considering why some survived and others faded.Engaging and entertaining, You Must Remember This is a window into the splendors of an erstwhile era and an opportunity for readers to live vicariously through one its most beloved leading men.WWW.ROBERT-WAGNER.COMBILL MEDLEY – THE RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS - THE TIME OF MY LIFE Bill Medley's indelible baritone adorns some of the biggest hits of the twentieth century—"You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration," "Rock and Roll Heaven"—and is prominent on the soundtrack of an entire generation. He and his musical partner, the late inimitable Bobby Hatfield, formed the Righteous Brothers in 1963 and forever changed the sound of popular music. The term "blue-eyed soul" was born. After the Phil Spector-produced "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" hit #1 in 1964 and Bobby Hatfield's sweeping solo vocal turn on "Unchained Melody" enchanted millions, the Righteous Brothers found themselves in the thick of the musical and cultural changes sweeping the nation. They toured with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, became friends with Elvis Presley and the Beach Boys, and brought rhythm and blues to the largest cross-over audience it had reached to date. The Time of My Life is an affecting and vivid memoir of those times and beyond, an unvarnished look at Bill Medley's personal triumphs and tragedies through the filter of five decades of musical, television, motion picture, and live-performance success. Medley opens his head and his heart, sharing his thoughts and feelings about the great African-American music that inspired him, his loving yet tumultuous and complicated relationship with Bobby Hatfield, the murder of his first wife Karen and his struggle to raise their son alone, his close friendship with Elvis and its sad ending, his deep depression over losing his voice (and how he got it back), his smash duet with Jennifer Warnes on "(I've Had) the Time of My Life" for the Dirty Dancingsoundtrack, and how he learned to settle down and become a family man and enjoy a nearly thirty-year (and counting) marriage. But Medley's story isn't just about the #1 hits and the awards. It's the story of an immensely talented young guy who lived the rock star life and reached the pinnacle of fame, success, and excess, and how he was eventually able to renew his commitment to both his faith and his family.WWW.BILLMEDLEY.COM

He was famous for his emotionless demeanor and small stature (reports of his height vary from 5'2" to 5'9", with 5'6" being the most generally accepted today). In just about all of his films he played either the hero or a bad guy with a conscience. Ladd was born in Hot Springs, Arkansas to English immigrant parents, and died in Palm Springs, California of an overdose of alcohol and sedatives at the age of 50. After first becoming a star with his performance as a hitman with a conscience in This Gun for Hire (1942), he became most famous for his starring role as a gunfighter in the classic 1953 western Shane. Veronica Lake was an ideal co-star; as she was so petite, 4' 11½" (1.51 m), she made him seem taller than he really was. Ladd also made Quigley's Top 10 Stars of the Year List 3 times, 1947, 1953 and 1954. In 1954 he starred along side Peter Cushing and Patrick Troughton in The Black Knight. Ladd also worked in radio, most notably the syndicated series Box 13. This series ran from 1948 to 1949 and was produced by Ladd's own company, Mayfair Productions.
