While many define inclusion as mixing autistic children into a regular classroom setting, for Chris, it goes beyond autism. Kids with medical complexities, learning disabilities, and trauma also face unique challenges and inclusion should be extended to them as well. ABA professionals play a significant role in helping individuals achieve their goals and improve their quality of life. We should all be aware of what an appropriate level of professionalism is and how we can show it in our roles as ABA therapists, RBTs, and paraprofessionals. Here, we start out by defining professionalism, which goes beyond simply dressing well and having a fancy title. True professionalism is a wide range of attitudes, behaviors, ethical considerations, and more. One of the core ways of showing professionalism is to leave your personal problems at the door before you walk into a classroom or client's home. Continuity of quality service might be one of the most important aspects of treatment with successful outcomes. Quality can refer to a number of variables including a strong rapport between client (and family) and clinicians, built over time with a steady progression of engaging and reinforcing sessions. While case managers are part of this quality service, it is inevitably the registered behavior technicians (RBTs) who share the most time and encounters with client and family. often in the family home. Hence, the reality of turnover of staff, or perhaps the necessity for 'time-off,' can create a semblance of discontinuity in service all on its own. In this episode, Dan and Mike revisit a 'company line' oft used to promote parameters like 'sub' clinicians when assigned staff is unavailable for a session and client as usual--the RBT is 'a service, not a person.' All the while, Mike splits time between being a 'sub' of sorts himself, caring for his 2-year-old while 'mama' is away, as Dan and he analyze the pros and cons of seeing the RBT as a service, and not a person.Lots to analyze in this tasty brew--a hint of bitterness, perhaps a bit sour at times, but it promises a smooth finish. In ABA, we use lots of different assessments to determine our learners' strengths and where they may need more help. Here, we cover the most common ABA assessments and how to know which one to use. The purpose of assessments is to provide us with a starting point and create a baseline. When you're clear on where you're starting from, you can then create a successful intervention. Assessments also help us look at the big picture and help our learners meet their goals along the way. One of the biggest misconceptions about assessments is that they're the same as a curriculum, and we discuss why this isn't the case. Teaching to assessments creates cookie-cutter programs, and good ABA involves customizing interventions to our learners' unique needs. Some of the most common assessments include ABLLS and VB Mapp, and we compare and contrast the two here. There is a moral and ethical imperative to address burnout in physicians." So says the Mayo Clinic and such is Sarah's passion for addressing burnout in our own ABA field. This isn't a 'nice to have' for ABA organizations, it's a must. Sarah's a lively and engaging breath of fresh air: though she's self-admittedly from "the Jurassic Age" as the 1,000th-ish BCBA, she brings a very direct perspective and message to ABA owners to get this right. But she also has a powerful message for individual BCBAs, RBTs, leaders, and owners that we must "recognize our own blind spots" and be part of the solution, not part of the problem. This episode is worth 0.5 BACB Supervision CEs - http://ow.ly/N6HJ50MI6o3 - Today Dr. Nasiah Cirincione-Ulezi speaks with Dr. Natalie Williams Awodeha for this podcast CE Event. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that 11.2% of adults aged 18 years and over report regular feelings of worry, nervousness, or anxiety (Clark et al. 2019). To effectively assess and address turnover in ABA workplace settings, additional research is needed that goes beyond the surface, exploring the ways in which work environments may serve as a source of trauma for staff in ABA settings. Mental disorders are often diagnosed in young adulthood, and research states the adolescent brain, specifically, the prefrontal cortex is not fully developed until as late as 25 years old (Arain, 2013). Although age is not a demographic reported by the BACB, anecdotal reports suggest many RBTs, BCaBAs, practicum students, and new BCBAs fall within this late adolescent stage, as entry-level and early career professionals. It is incumbent upon supervisors to understand the role of trauma and the impact of Adverse Child Experiences (ACEs), among other life experiences, on mental and physical health, considering the high rates of mental health concerns among adult populations. In this presentation, attendees will explore resources, including Mental Health First Aid certification, help supervisors identify and intervene with supervisees while staying within their scope of competence. Attendees will identify ways to mitigate potential triggers in the workplace to create psychologically safe environments for supervisees. Attendees will also discuss the impact of culturally responsive trauma-informed supervision on client outcomes in ABA settings. The presenter will share relevant research, in addition to personal narratives from the presenter's lived experiences. -- If you have questions, comments, feedback, or suggestions, please reach out to operantinnovations@abatechnologies.com

I've been asked many times to highlight the work of Registered Behavioral Technicians, and in this installment of the Apollo Case Study Series, we do just that.   Dr. Jim Moore, Rachel Packiam (Director of Clinical Excellence), Christina Halverson (RBT Training Coordinator), and Emily Jackson (Lead RBT) joined me to discuss Apollo's unique organizational strategies for onboarding and training their RBTs.   As you'll learn in this episode, by the time an RBT works 1:1 with a child, they have had the training and confidence necessary to implement programming successfully. It is important to emphasize that this just doesn't happen by accident. There are many additional hours of supervising and mentoring that happen - hours that go far beyond the basic requirements. And as an outsider looking in, it's impressive to me just how much non-billable time they invest in ensuring their staff are as prepared as possible.   If you're a practice owner, or if you have some administrative role, you're going to want to grab a pen and paper to take some notes, because there are a lot of ideas for staff development and support in this podcast. We go over topics including rapport-building with trainees, soft-skills, staff morale, professionalism, teaching and upholding core organizational values, common struggles of trainees, and lots more!   If you're an RBT or BCBA, and this model of training and service delivery appeals to you, connect with Jim, or contact the folks at Apollo directly to learn more about potential job opportunities in their Atlanta-area clinics.

There's a need and a demand for ABA services with increased funding beginning to occur. The Behavior Analysis field has some great momentum but as the field grows, and large private equity firms enter this space, there is a concern of degradation of the treatment provided and the quality of services. In this episode, Dr. Graham Taylor speaks with Karen Chung, Karen has 12 years of experience as a Certified Behavioral Analyst and is the CEO and founder of Special Learning, Inc., an education technology company that delivers web-based training, virtual supervision, and consultation for BCBAs anywhere in the world. Aside from her work with Special Learning, Karen has been at work building the Ethical Standards Board, an online database of certified ABAs and registered behavioral technicians available for the public to find qualified clinicians and agencies. Together they discuss the current state of the Behavioral Analysis field, some of the challenges of rapid growth, and the demand for services, as well as highlighting some of the gaps in the ethics code and how that fails to regulate the quality of treatment from large private equity firms. Finally, we discuss a new service called the Ethics Standards Board for ABA Centers (ESBAP), which provides a centralized database of ABA Agencies that are rated by their performance by peers as well as by their clients. ESBAP is creating a resource available to the public, to help shift and support those organizations that are behaving ethically, doing quality work, and outcomes-oriented that have opportunities for RBTs to find a career path to mentorship.   For more information about Special Learning Inc., please visit: https://www.special-learning.com/ To contact Karen Chung, please email at kchung@special-learning.com For more information about the Ethical Standards Board for ABA Centers, the ESBAP, please visit: https://esbap.org/

Today, we're talking about what not to do as an ABA practitioner. We're going to review our top five don't-dos as a professional in the field. When we were preparing, it was difficult to narrow it down to just five, but we discuss what we believe are the most important things to keep in mind. It's also difficult to talk about what not to do without speaking about what you should do, so we'll offer you some tips to help you in your jobs.First, you want to avoid using technical jargon. Dumbing things down and putting concepts into practical language isn't just beneficial to parents, but also to newly minted RBTs and BCBAs. Second, avoid being condescending. Speaking too technically can sometimes carry an “I know more than you do” feel, especially if you're in someone's home and notice right away what needs to be fixed. Third, it's so important to be yourself and bring who you are into your job. Our fourth don't is that we shouldn't be working to reduce a problem behavior without introducing a replacement skill. And lastly, don't number five is to remember you don't know everything. We can always learn from the families we work with, along with our colleagues. What's Inside:What not to do as an ABA professional.Tips on how to turn our top five don'ts into dos.Why it's important to be yourself.Mentioned In This Episode:HowToABA.com/joinHow to ABA on YouTubeFind us on FacebookFollow us on Instagram

Michelle's parents advocated for her early on and got her involved with speech therapy, ABA, occupational and physical therapy. As she got older, she gained a lot more skills, including handwriting, and her services were gradually reduced. Today, she works with elementary school students with disabilities and started working as an RBT this year. Michelle's own personal experiences inspired her to work in the field and it's been fascinating for her to witness everything that's changed. Michelle talks about using food as reinforcers and how some of the foods people used in the past just weren't healthy. The field has come a long way, including giving clients more of a choice when it comes to reinforcers. Are you struggling with the BCBA exam or trying to teach RBTs new concepts for your clients? This article, while it seems like an academia and classroom teaching intervention, can help with both of those struggles. After all, RBT training is just small group classroom education. The strategy of interteaching has been used throughout education and has resulted in increases in grades, participation, and even student ratings. However, there is still more research needed on the components necessary to maintain this increase in behavior. This study looks at all the different components and does a component analysis to determine the components that result in the greatest change in behavior. In my opinion, this article is a must read (or listen) for all the practitioners trying to supervise and train RBTs in any fashion. By utilizing more efficient teaching strategies, fidelity of treatments will increase and client outcomes will improve.

Staff training is an important part of our jobs. Whether you're with supervisees, RBTs, or teachers, knowing your audience and having realistic expectations going into the training makes all the difference. Don't assume that your audience knows as much as you do about the topic you're presenting on and always start with what they understand. Set easy, attainable goals and consider using breakout groups to make things interactive. Adding video is another great way to mix things up and keep people engaged.Having your trainees walk away with handouts and visuals helps make things concrete. Handouts help tremendously with more technical concepts and can be used for future reference. Doing a pre and post-test helps track progress on learning and how effective your training has been. Senior members of your organization are great resources to help you with training, especially if you're hosting a large group. Always use stories and anecdotes that are relevant to you and your audience. We are pleased to announce that we've made our staff training series available! “How do you know someone is fluent?” When they demonstrate certain behaviors? Emit certain phrases and buzz words? Complete their SAFMEDS in record time? What about the outcomes we're usually interested in: understanding what other people are doing and why they are doing it, and describing it in such that a way that ties it to behavioral principles. Meaning, breaking down the information we're given into relevant behavior elements (Humility Note: don't break it down and feed it back to them. Please do it in your own head unless they ask you). Once you have your internal translation, use plain language to gauge your own and your listener's understanding, instead of relying on jargon. Learning Objectives: 1. Provide definitions of fluency in both behavior analytic and layman's terms. 2. Describe the values of being fluent in one's practice and science. 3. Describe ways to assess fluency. Take Aways- your bite-sized educational noms: - Check your audience: Provide examples with topics that are known and understood in that person's repertoire and experiences. Forcing jargon doesn't change a person's understanding (and it probably doesn't do great things for rapport and pairing). - Receive instead of transmit: Instead of prescribing, consider what question to ask next to gain more information and paint a more accurate picture. Operate under the assumption that everyone has something to add. - Values of Fluency: Deeper understanding of what other people are doing and why they are doing it, efficacy, improved perspective taking. - Something to consider- we require new practitioners (RBTS, newly certified BCBAs,and BCaBAs) to use perfect jargon when answering questions, interacting with other professionals and stakeholders, yet, they lack experience. We begin with M*A*S*H (1970) - the movie that started a TV show that lasted longer than the Korean war it portrays at a time when America needed an outlet for Vietnam angst. Machismo overcomes emasculation in Westworld (1973) with gritty gunslingers and sex robots. The paramilitary police surveillance state is closer than we think in Blue Thunder (1983) but let's turn it into a weekly fluffy police drama. Based on a true story (not), Fargo (1996) divides us with its ineptitude noir and the banality of evil. Also: Joe tries to bond with #PERL the cat - literally. Laugh track vs. no laugh track. Dee shits on Joe’s facts. We uncover the earliest use of the word “fuck” in cinema. Robots? No! Rbts! RBTS! Dee isn’t impressed by a rubber snake. JAFO, FNG, and REMF explained. Mario Machado! Yah. Yaaaaaah. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. (Go Bears). Dee hates on Minnesota nice. We play a game of “... the TV show!” and Nerd Fight this week is movies that should be turned into TV shows.
