So whether it's partnering with brands, whether it's partnering with other creators, whether it's having sort of more of a holistic, comarketing approach to shows that have guests, all of these levers are really just rooted in less growth being one sided, or depending on other parties to push you forward and betting and depending more on yourself and leveraging others to help you grow."— Carly Baker [00:03:09 → 00:03:45]Content Strategy for Brands: "So I think when it comes to starting a new show, it's much harder to have a very broad audience. You should have three kind of audiences or personas that you're thinking about. So you have the core audience, which should be the audience that you want all of your content to resonate with... the secondary audience, which has some overlap with the core, but might be straying a little bit further... and then you have what we like to call the transformational audience... And those are folks where if you can serve the core and the secondary and bring those transformational people into those inner circles, that's really where you're going to see explosive growth."— Carly Baker [00:07:12 → 00:07:24]Growth Strategies in Podcasting: "So not only thinking about audiences as one person, but thinking about it as many people and trying to serve and always iterating on that, I think is going to be a really good way to continue with growth."— Carly Baker [00:07:24 → 00:07:38]The Evolution of Podcasting in Content Marketing: "We have a YouTube network. We have an entire team of people that are kind of functioning as a media company within HubSpot as a whole. And a lot of this was of course built on the acquisition of the hustle, which is what brought my first million to us. And with that acquisition and with having my first million, the conversation was, well, we should start a network, why should we not start a network?"— Carly Baker [00:15:01 → 00:15:28]Joining a Podcast Network: "So for anyone that's considering joining a network, I think having intentionality behind it is really important. So really sitting down and thinking about, okay, what do I not have the capacity to do for my podcast or for my podcast business that I know would make a difference? That should be number one. Number two, what are some initiatives or marketing plays or strategies that I have that are going on that are kind of working, kind of not working and could use the help of a team to optimize and make these work for me? And number three, what do I want help with? What would I want to offload and be fine giving someone else and having them take full ownership of doing on my behalf. Right. And so once you kind of have those three big pillars, then that's going to help you filter out networks."— Carly Baker [00:18:15 → 00:19:13]Navigating Content Ownership in Media Deals: "You need to think about if you want to maintain ownership of your content, if you want to own the ip, if you want a license deal, if you're okay with working in a network where if you leave, you can't take any of the content that they produced on your behalf."— Carly Baker [00:20:24 → 00:20:39]Maximizing Creator Networks: "So if you're trying to monetize your podcast without doing revenue sales, if that's not a part of your network, and you're really looking to build a private membership, and you see a network where six out of ten of the shows, those folks have very successful private networks or private memberships, that's a network you should be interested in, because you can learn from the people that are in there, and in return, you can give them something back."— Carly Baker [00:21:35 → 00:22:00]Evaluating Podcast Partnerships: "Are they bringing on diverse voices? We look at production stuff. Is their production value really high? What kind of social channels do they have? Are they like a thought leader in their industry, those different types of things?"— Carly Baker [00:23:37 → 00:23:52]Content Strategy for Emerging Platforms: "And if there's not an audience on YouTube for what you have going on with your content, because a lot of people are doing it, doesn't mean you should do it."— Carly Baker [00:27:30 → 00:27:38]The Evolution of Content Creation: "Right? Like they're seeing you, they're seeing your set, they're seeing your mannerisms. It's kind of taking that one step further, but that can also be distracting. I think in some ways opening up the floodgates to direct comments and feedback on the content that you're making. But I think ultimately there's lower lift, lower barriers of entry to sort of explore what video could look for you."— Carly Baker [00:28:28 → 00:28:53]Shownotes powered by Castmagic--Have any questions about the show or topics you'd like us to explore further?Shoot us a DM; we'd love to hear from you.Want the weekly TL;DR of tips delivered to your mailbox?Check out our newsletter here Follow us for content, clips, giveaways, & updates!Castmagic InstagramCastmagic TwitterCastmagic LinkedIn ---Blaine Bolus - Co-Founder of CastmagicRamon Berrios - Co-Founder of CastmagicCarly Baker - Listener Acquisition Manager at HubSpot

In today's episode, hear an innovative approach to improving the modern EV battery with guest, Virginia Klausmeier President & CEO of Sylvatex! As electric vehicles become more common worldwide, battery production must rapidly scale to meet the rising demand. The burgeoning electric vehicle market, however, faces limitations imposed by battery costs and material availability. Cathodes, constituting 60% of an EV battery's expense and carbon life cycle, are predominantly produced through energy-intensive and costly processes that also demand a significant amount of water. In light of the automotive industry's widespread commitment to emission reduction and net-zero goals by 2050, the existing challenges posed by current cathode manufacturing techniques emerge as a formidable obstacle for the industry.Virginia Klausmeier and her company Sylvatex are developing a solution. Her startup's single-step dry cathode production process uses less energy and no water compared to traditional techniques. It also has more flexibility in materials used. Klausmeier explains how Sylvatex's innovation could help battery makers lower costs while meeting ESG mandates, supporting widespread EV adoption. Listeners will gain insight into how innovative new companies are future-proofing batteries and accelerating the global transition to reducing transportation carbon emissions. The Earthling spotlighted is Oscar Olivares, an artist from Venezuela. Olivares completed one of the world's largest ecological murals. Crafted entirely from bottle caps, this monumental artwork not only captivates the senses but serves as a testament to human creativity and environmental stewardship, providing a much-needed restoration of faith in humanity. Are you or someone YOU know creating a podcast, Youtube channel or newsletter that deserves a larger audience? Content creator, chef and soon-to-be restaurateur Tue Nguyen (who goes by @TwayDaBae on her social media accounts) started working with BuzzFeed as the host of its Tasty show, "Making it Big," in 2022. After filming two seasons of the show, and recording monthly videos for the cooking brand's channels as part of her role within the BuzzFeed Creator Network, Nguyen is now developing a new show with Tasty that will better showcase who she is as a content creator. In the past year, Nguyen has signed a cookbook deal, started the process of opening a fine dining restaurant in Los Angeles and both maintained and grew her owned-and-operated channels, all in addition to her partnership with BuzzFeed. BuzzFeed's CEO Jonah Peretti has stated that the company's path to growth will be largely dependent on its work with content creators like Nguyen, but Nguyen said during the latest episode of the Digiday Podcast that she has grown a lot as an individual creator because of what she learned while working with the digital media company.

Growing Your Audience Through Recommendations

Word-of-mouth has proven to be one of the most consistent business tactics of all time. If someone we admire and trust recommends something to us, we are much more likely to take their recommendation seriously and take action. The same holds true for creators. Successful creators who have already built their audiences know which newsletters are worth subscribing to and which creators are worth following, and they only recommend the content they believe in to maintain their audience's trust.  ConvertKit's Creator Network is a place where creators can work together to grow their audience with similar interests and similar niches. One of the biggest challenges for newsletter creators is growing an audience, because the ability to “go viral” doesn't exist in the same way it does via social media. Reaching audiences organically and ensuring they will be a good fit is difficult, but not impossible. How can recommendations give you an advantage when trying to expand your email reach?  In this episode, Alyssa and Melissa discuss how to grow and get to know your audience organically through ConvertKit's Creator Network, how to recommend creators that will resonate with your subscribers, and how to maintain a highly-engaged email audience by cleaning your list and being consistent.Key Takeaways [03:02] - What is the Creator Network?  [06:20] - How creators can grow their newsletter lists and get to know their audience better. [08:42] - How to choose which creator will resonate the most with your audience. [10:30] - How automation helps deliverability.  [13:26] - Why it's crucial to clean up your lists. [16:27] - How to boost subscribers on your email lists. [21:05] - Why consistency is key for content creators.  Quotes[07:59] - “If you're going to recommend someone to your audience, it's really important that you believe in their content. You don't want to recommend people sign up for a list that you actually don't enjoy, and then for your audience to lose that trust.” ~ @alyssa_dulin[09:59] - “We know that a lot of creators on our platform are busy running their own businesses. They don't have a lot of time to do the research. So if we are recommending people to you that we know have a similar audience, that's less work that you have to do on your end.” ~ @mel_lambert_ [14:11] - “It's gonna be more important than ever to check engagement levels and make sure that people who may not be opening your emails are either excluded from receiving certain emails or eventually removed from your list.” ~ @mel_lambert_ [20:38] - A larger creator can recommend a smaller creator and have such a big impact. It's wild. I hope a lot of creators get to partner up with each other and connect and help each other grow.” ~ @alyssa_dulinLinks ConvertKit Creator Network Craft + Commerce Conference Subscribe to the weekly Deliverability Dispatch Newsletter Subscribe to the monthly Deliverability Defined Newsletter Ask Alyssa & Melissa questions or suggest content for our next monthly newsletter Connect with our hosts Alyssa Dulin Melissa Lambert Stay in touch Apple Podcasts Spotify Twitter Facebook Instagram Deliverability Defined Website Try ConvertKit's deliverability in actionIt's now free to use ConvertKit with an audience of 1,000 subscribers or less! For those of you out there who are content creators, whether you call yourself an influencer or not, you know I am a loud champion of owned channels. I harp on the fact that you can't rely on the social networks … borrowed channels … for your content or audience forever. You need to have your own website. Your own email newsletter and list. Perhaps your own podcast. I do talk about podcasting a lot, but it's not because I love podcasts and podcasting. It's because podcasters are influencers. And understanding them and their world, which is a little different than a regular social media content creator, is good for those of you who are brand or agency side professionals. It's also hopefully inspiring and helpful for the creators among us who are trying to build something out of their online presence. The challenge for many people with podcasting is that there's so much technical know how perceived to be needed to start, it's intimidating. You have to have software to record and edit. A place to host. Maybe software to make it sound better than you can muster in Garage Band. Do you have a website for it? How do you get it to post on all the podcast apps … It can be a challenge. The less technically inclined someone is, the bigger the challenge. Zencastr recently made some holistic changes to its software platform to make all that technical challenge go away. By way of disclosure, I am a paying customer of Zencastr and use it for my interviews here on the show. Zencastr is also a recent sponsor of Winfluence and its Creator Network has placed advertisements on the Marketing Podcast Network. Neither of those things have anything to do with my guest being invited on today. Josh Nielsen is the co-founder and CEO of Zencastr. When you have the opportunity to interview a big shot, you take it. Sponsorship or not.  Josh and team unleashed a new beast on the podcast industry in late August. Zencastr now is far more than a place to record your web-based interviews for podcasting. It now has full production and editing capabilities for shows, hosting, transcripts, the Creator Network which matches shows with advertisers for monetization. It's a whole new animal.  Josh visited with me to talk about the new features there to help make your owned content easier to manage. But we also talked about the industry as a whole, why podcast apps are terrible at search and discovery and more. And today we are talking to Nina Froriep of Clockwise Productions. Nina, it's great to have you on.Thank you so much for the opportunity to talk about what I love talking about.Yes, that's what we like to hear. So Nina, you own Clockwise Productions. Do you want to kind of start with an intro of that business and what you all do?Yeah. So, Clockwise Productions has actually been around for 25 years. The last six years of which, we have have been working as video marketers, before that, we were just filmmaker, producer, director, that kind of stuff. So what we do now is we take people who want to grow their businesses with not just any client, but their ideal clients with video, and we show them how to create videos, but our focus really is not on the production end. Our focus is on the strategy and content part of it, because in the end, that is where you need to focus, if you are a small business owner or service provider, a business coach, which is a lot of our audience, are business coaches. You're in the business of disrupting something, you're in the business of helping people, so you need to be seen and heard. So strategy and content or content and strategy are sort of the focus of what we do.Excellent. And that's what the business does. How about your own background? You said that the business has been around for a while. What kind of work were you doing 10 years ago and that type of thing?Clockwise. So, yeah. So as I said, Clockwise has been in business for 25 years. I've been in the business for about 30 years. So Clockwise happened fairly quickly. We were a traditional production video or film back then, even production company.
