J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is filled with grand figures: mighty wizards like Gandalf whose wisdom and knowledge of Middle Earth is utterly priceless and vital for the fellowship, noble kings like Aragorn, who in the movies is more reluctant to take that role, but in the books, is ready to become king, and ancient evils like the evil of Saruman, where he makes a Ring himself and seems to lose all sanity for his actual purpose.
Many far-right conservatives think The Lord of the Rings is about them. They may love Tolkien, but it's very possible Tolkien would not have loved them back. This episode was produced by Peter Balonon-Rosen with help from Ariana Aspuru, edited by Jolie Myers, fact-checked by Laura Bullard, engineered by Patrick Boyd, and hosted by Noel King. With Walker down and the troupe out of immediate danger, Guy respectfully looted the elf who died for him, and Adam disrespectfully looted the ranger. The troupe learned that the two hobbits were the ringbearer, Yolo Took, and his butler, Frodo Baggins, but they needed to hide until they could meet up with Gandalf the following night. So, Del, Tyler, and the hobbits snuck out an upper-floor window, and Adam and Guy pulled a Weekend at Bernie's to get the elf's body outside to loot it more thoroughly. Can they keep the hobbits safe from bounty-hungry drunk people for another day without drawing the attention of more black riders?Featuring players Tyler Hewitt, Del Borovic, Guy Bradford, and Adam McNamara, and Dungeon Master Tom McGee.Jesters of Middle-earth streams live every Wednesday at 7:30pm ET on Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/dumbdumbdice)Enjoying Jesters of Middle-earth?- Consider supporting the show for as little as $1 a month to get BTS fun, an ad-free feed, and even add your own character to the podcast! Was Tolkien warning us about the rise of AI and transhumanism? What if The Lord of the Rings wasn't just a fantasy epic, but a prophetic story mapping out the dangers of machines, digital power, and a world losing touch with virtue? This episode will change the way you see both Tolkien's work and the world we live in today. Studio Sponsor: Cardio Miracle - "Unlock the secret to a healthier heart, increased energy levels, and transform your cardiovascular fitness like never before.": CardioMiracle.com/TBNS In today's conversation, we dive deep into Tolkien's mythology and explore how his Catholic worldview, his skepticism of machines, and his vision of the “One Ring” eerily line up with the rise of artificial intelligence. Is Sauron more than just a villain? Could he represent the machine itself — an all-seeing force built on binary code? My guest, Paul List, author of Mount Doom: The Prophecy of Tolkien Revealed, walks us through a mind-blowing breakdown of Tolkien's characters and symbols — Gandalf, the hobbits, the Ringwraiths — and how they connect to virtue, vice, and the spiritual dangers of our technological age. You'll never look at Frodo's journey the same way again. We also tackle today's AI race, where governments and corporations pour billions into building smarter machines. But are we building tools that serve us, or a beast that will one day demand our worship? Paul makes the case that Tolkien saw this exact danger nearly 100 years ago, warning us through myth before it became reality. Most importantly, we talk solutions. How do we fight back? It starts with cultivating virtue, clinging to faith, and refusing to hand over our humanity to the machine. This isn't just literature or politics — it's about the future of our civilization. Buckle up, because this conversation will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about technology, freedom, and the stories we tell. ❤️ Order Cardio Miracle (CardioMiracle.com/TBNS) for 15% off and take a step towards better heart health and overall well-being!

Cheryl Manchenton and I go back a long way—I once took a ride from a Las Vegas casino to the airport with her after an ACDIS conference well over a decade ago. And I've learned over the years she also happens to be as sharp—and as outspoken—as anyone I've ever met regarding the subject of healthcare quality, specifically measuring hospital quality with coded or abstracted data and how it all relates to the work of mid-revenue cycle professionals. I think we even talked quality on the way to the airport. So I was thrilled to get her on Off the Record to go deep on this topic, along with her Disney World obsession and other fun asides (Gandalf the Gray makes his way in to the conversation). This was a fabulous, wide-ranging talk on quality. Tune in and listen to: What Cheryl thinks about how we measure quality in healthcare, specifically through the use of coded data What quality-obsessed hospitals often get wrong about impacting outcomes with documentation and coding alone (with a deep dive into healthcare acquired infections, or HAIs). Borderline or unscrupulous practices done to artificially improve quality rankings What concrete steps would Cheryl take were she leading a small community hospital seeking to improve its observed/expected mortality ratio The recently-released 2026 OPPS proposed rule and the large number of hospitals potentially impacted by the new Safety Measures change (we both like this: presently a hospital can rank at the bottom for safety and still be 5 stars) The reality of “picking your poison” among many quality programs and getting aligned with what really matters to your organization Cheryl's career north star, how she stays educated, and thoughts on her long career winding down Disney craze, grandkids, and best tips for navigating the theme parks

This week on Explore Weekly, we dive deep into the genre multiverse with the biggest headlines from sci-fi, fantasy, horror, and comics. From Middle-earth to the Mojave Wasteland, Emmy buzz to alien invasions—here's what's lighting up the internet:
Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universesIt would appear as though Ryan Reynold's social media stunt we discussed last week is having the intended effect as a few of our favorite trades can't seem to come to a consensus. First, in the August 15 edition of Heat Vision, The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive column for all things comics, horror and sci-fi, Borys Kitt claimed that their sources confirmed Deadpool's inclusion in Avengers: Doomsday. However, later that day Deadline refuted the speculation by citing their own sources who said the actor has not been seen on the London set and is not intended to appear in either upcoming Avengers film. In less nebulous Doomsday talk, Nightcrawler actor Alan Cumming described his experience returning to the role as healing, after a terrible experience on 2003's X2. It's a big week for DC Studios with Superman hitting Video-On-Demand last Friday and Peacemaker Season 2 premiering this Thursday. While on the red carpet for the show's debut in New York, DC Studios head and Peacemaker's showrunner James Gunn defended Superman's quick availability for home viewing after just 35 days in theaters, by sharing how the film impacts the series. “It's a big part, definitely Superman leads directly into Peacemaker,” said Gunn, while speaking with The Hollywood Reporter. “Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it's incredibly important,” he continued. Gunn also teased the future for Superman on the big screen, saying, “I've already finished the treatment for the next story in what I'll call the ‘Superman Saga.' The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked-out treatment. I'm working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”Back to the Wasteland we go, as Amazon's marketing for Fallout Season 2 has begun in preparation for its December 17 premiere, with a full-court press that includes first look images and a trailer that was released earlier today. The images showcase returning characters played by Ella Purnell, Walton Goggins, Moises Arias, Aaron Moten and Kyle McLachlan, while the two minute 42-second trailer gave us our first glimpse at Justin Theroux's enigmatic Mr. House and McCauley Caulkin in an undisclosed role, which were of course accompanied, yet again, by the crooning stylings of The Ink Spots. In an interview with Collider, Marvel Zombies director Bryan Andrews confirmed that the series has moved its release date up to September 24th, and all episodes of the series will be available to stream at once. He also confirmed that the four episodes will be rated TV-MA.At a recent London fan event Sir Ian McKellen claimed Frodo and Gandalf will appear in Andy Serkis' upcoming The Hunt for Gollum film without specifying whether he and Elijah Wood would reprise their iconic roles.NBCUniversal announced that it has acquired all rights, excluding publishing, to Robert Ludlum's popular Jason Bourne and Treadstone book series.Weapons took the number one spot at the box office again in its second weekend with a drop of only 43%, bringing its worldwide total to nearly $150 million dollars. Nobody 2 generated around $15 million dollars worldwide in its opening weekend on a $25 million dollar budget.Netflix has dropped a trailer for the second half of season 2 of Wednesday, which will stream on September 3rd.Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers are in talks for a massive overall deal with Paramount that includes both streaming and features with a big theatrical component, something the pair have not been able to get at their current home of more than a decade, Netflix.Original Scary Movie actresses Regina Hall and Anna Faris are coming back as Brenda and Cindy, respectively, for the Wayans Brothers' restart of the comedy franchise, which is eyeing a 2026 release.
This week, Taylor, Sandy, Doug Jordan and Taddea Richard discuss Ian McKellen's Gandalf revelation, sexually demented Labubu dolls, the Taliban's devious ways, a Hogwarts Krispy Kreme mashup and much, much more! All new segments include Bridging the Gap: The Two State Solution! and Our Week's: Answers!

It's time for another long-form podcast! In this episode, we welcome Parker Settecase of ParkNotes Parker's Ponderings for a deep dive into the limits of Stoicism, the role of the God/Logos in this philosophy, and how these same ideas filter through Star Wars, The Lord of the Rings, and more.TOPICS WE'LL GET INTO* The overlap between Stoicism and Christianity: How Stoic principles align and diverge from Christian theology, and the importance of the Logos as a personal being.* Wrestling, discipline, and practical philosophy: How Parker's wrestling background shaped his appreciation for Stoic ideas about self-control and focusing on what you can control.* Pop culture and philosophy: Using characters like Gandalf, Batman, and Star Wars' Jedi and Sith to make philosophical concepts accessible and relatable.* Lust, self-control, and pop culture analogies: How Marcus Aurelius' writings on physical desire relate to modern struggles, and parallels with the Star Wars narrative of Anakin Skywalker and the dark side.* The Sith vs. Jedi worldview: Technology, transhumanism, and the dangers of trying to “challenge forth” and reshape nature, with references to Heidegger, Nietzsche, and Foucault.* AI, humanity, and the risks of technological mimicry: Reflections on the use of AI to recreate lost loved ones, the philosophical implications of large language models, and the importance of preserving human uniqueness.* CS Lewis and the Inklings: The relevance of “That Hideous Strength,” “Till We Have Faces,” and the distinction between “major” and “goetia” magic as analogs for Jedi and Sith philosophies. We pick up our story with the battle at Helm's Deep and end with Gandalf and Pippen racing toward Minas Tirith.
For over a decade, a pair of huge eagles ridden by Gandalf the wizard greeted people as they arrived in the city famous for the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. But no longer. Today, Wellington Airport unveiled its brand new centerpiece created by Weta Workshop and it's already proving a hit with locals and visitors. Massey University journalism student Kajal Nair reports.
We need to have a long talk about Saruman. That's it. That's the whole intro. Because I don't even know where to go with this because he is so vastly different in the book and the details that you get for what he is wearing and what his mentality is in the tale that Gandalf told of his imprisonment at Orthanc is so strange. I just flat out don't know what to think of him. So I want to write an essay to figure it out…this one might be all over the place. I feel like the last few have been all over the place, but this one especially is going to be.
Amongst its pages, there are many familiar names—Oscar Wilde, Quentisn Crisp, Sappho, James Baldwin, Freddie Mercury — but also many we might not expect: Florence Nightingale, Marlene Dietrich, Cary Grant, J. Edgar Hoover, Eleanor Roosevelt, Tchaikovsky, Greta Garbo, Richard the Lionheart, even Abraham Lincoln, along with 1000 other stories of artists, generals, politicians, kings, despots and many more figures drawn from 5000 years of hidden culture. Keith Stern came to the Bureau to talk about his extraordinary encyclopaedia ‘Queers in History', what drove him to write it, and why it matters. The book is more than a who's-who of queer life —it's a challenge to the official version of the past, a reminder of how history gets made, unmade, and remade, depending on who's telling the stories, inviting us to consider how queerness has always existed, and has contributed to the culture. And we get into the subject of whether Gandalf was Queer - yes, we really do…
This is Pod of Doom, a podcast dedicated to the British band Black Sabbath! The hosts of Every Pod You Cast return to discuss all things Sabbath: Justin Mancini of TheCineMaverick.com & Cinema Joes, Chris Mancini, and Randy Allain of Media/Lit will be covering the Ozzy Osbourne and Ronnie James Dio eras of the metal pioneers. In the tenth official episode of the season, Chris, Justin, Randy, and special guest Eric Morgan (professional musician and bass guitarist) discuss the second Sabbath album with Ronnie James Dio. They talk about how “metal” Gandalf fighting a balrog is, imagine Dio creating multiple versions of himself á la Ash in Army of Darkness, and appreciate having an actual musician explain what makes Sabbath great. And of course, they recommend other artists they've been enjoying for your listening pleasure. Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky are the co-creators of the Design Sprint (the famous five-day product innovation process) and authors of the bestselling book Sprint. After decades of working with over 300 startups in the earliest stages, they discovered that most startups fail not because they can't build, but because they build the wrong thing. The very beginning of a startup is your highest-leverage moment, and most teams waste months or years by skipping a few critical early questions. Jake and John developed the Foundation Sprint to help startups validate ideas and compress months of work into just two days. What you'll learn:1. The step-by-step Foundation Sprint process that compresses three or four months of validation into two days—including templates you can use immediately2. Why differentiation is the #1 predictor of startup success (with the 2x2 framework that you can use with your team)3. The three fundamental questions every founder should answer before writing a line of code4. The “note and vote” technique that eliminates groupthink and gets honest answers from your colleagues5. The seven “magic lenses” for choosing between multiple product ideas6. The biggest mistake engineers make when building with AI tools7. If you've seen or read Tolkien's The Hobbit, then you know that Gandalf convinced Thorin and the dwarves to take Bilbo Baggins, a simple hobbit from the Shire. But you may not know why Gandalf chose Bilbo in the first place, or how Gandalf and Thorin met, or how Gandalf received the map and key that he could pass along to Thorin, and still yet how unlikely the whole story is and how the tale is tangled up in the larger fight against Sauron.
