"Bruce Vilanch, a storyteller without peer, has written a tell-all . . . on himself! And it's hilarious! He's finally coming clean and owning up to his part in creating some of the worst television of the twentieth century, and that's saying a lot. There's no one like him. As they've been saying since I discovered him as a cub reporter at the Chicago Tribune, when you're in a pinch . . . Get Bruce!" -BETTE MIDLER Bruce Vilanch is known as a go-to comedy writer for award shows, sitcoms, and top-heavy variety specials, but he has also been responsible for quite a few of the worst shows ever put on television-legendarily bad productions. Some of his work lives in infamy-The Star Wars Holiday Special, The Paul Lynde Halloween Special, Rob Lowe dancing with Snow White at the Oscars, and The Brady Bunch Variety Hour. How did these ever seem like a good idea? Well, everyone has screwed up a few times, or had their work screwed up by others. It Seemed Like a Bad Idea at the Time is a lifetime reflection of what Vilanch has experienced, learned, forgotten, dismissed, and embraced in decades of working in show business, specifically the south forty acres known as comedy. It involves very famous people and people who were not very famous but should have been. And it explains  to the person in the audience who says to himself, once he has gotten his jaw off the floor, "'How did this ever get made?" Don't we all want to know?Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Two-time Emmy Award-winner Bruce Vilanch has written jokes for Bob Hope, Lily Tomlin, Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and virtually every Hollywood star to grace the Academy Awards stage from 1989 – 2014.  As one of the entertainment industry's most sought-after joke writers, the actor, comedian and songwriter was perhaps best-known to audiences for his work behind-the-scenes at the Oscars, supplying one-liners to hosts and presenters. (Oscar-watchers are still talking about the year Jack Palance did push-ups on the stage, and the time Rob Lowe went rolling down the river with Snow White – two moments that left Bruce and his fellow writers scrambling backstage to help viewers make sense of it all.)  Over the years, Bruce became a familiar face to television audiences, when he stepped from behind the curtain for a long-running stint as a celebrity panelist on “Hollywood Squares,” where he also served as head writer. As such, he is uniquely positioned to offer note and comment on what it takes to craft topical material for some of our leading personalities – honing his own voice as a comedian and performer while honoring the voices of his famous clients. Bruce was the subject of the 1999 documentary “Get Bruce!”, and he has played himself in the movies and on television, including a memorable turn in an episode of “The Simpsons.” Join us for an outrageous discussion on Bruce's adventures (and, misadventures) in Hollywood, including the inside story behind one of the most notorious flops in the history of prime-time network television (1978's “‘Star Wars' Holiday Special”), the infamous Friars Club roast that featured Ted Danson in blackface, and a cameo turn from Ira Gershwin who was brought in to rewrite the lyrics to a song called “Treat Me Rough” for Marie Osmond, in hopes of slipping the number past the Morman elders who handled censorship duties on the “Donny & Marie” variety show.  Learn more about Bruce Vilanch: Website Twitter Please support the sponsors who support our show. One of the most sought-after jokesmiths in the entertainment industry, Bruce Vilanch has become a recognizable face in his own right, thanks to the feature-length documentary “Get Bruce!” (1999) and his one-time stint as a regular on “Hollywood Squares” (1998 ), for which he also served as head writer.Mr. Vilanch was born in New York on November 23, 1948, but was adopted by the Vilanch's–his late father, Jonas, an optometrist and his mother, Henne, a former Broadway show girl–and then grew up in Patterson, New Jersey. He has a very special bond with Henne and according to him, gets a lot of his show biz humour from her.“She's as obsessed with image as famous people,” Vilanch says of his mother, his hands making the kind of hyper motions that indicate adoration of the stage veteran. “When I was little, the house had what she called the showcase room. The furniture was all wrapped in plastic and nobody except company could go into it. Of course she took the plastic off then. A few years ago, the dog discovered the room, ripped through the plastic and ruined the upholstery. She called me and said she was going to redecorate it. And when I asked her what excuse she would use, she said, ‘I'm telling people it's because Sonny Bono died.”Known for his eclectic eyewear and collection of unique T-shirts, he began as a child model for Lane Bryant, but when his initial efforts as an actor came to naught, he became an entertainment writer for the Chicago Tribune instead. Impressed by his review of her cabaret performance in 1970, Bette Midler hired him to punch up her act where he gave birth to Midler's famed Sophie Tucker jokes. He later moved to Los Angeles where he wrote for variety shows like the original “Donny and Marie” and “The Brady Bunch Hour” (both ABC) and provided material for Richard Pryor, Lily Tomlin and Joan Rivers. He has maintained his connection with Midler through the years, working on such projects as the feature “Divine Madness” (1980) and the TV special “Bette Midler–Diva Las Vegas” (HBO, 1997), as well as writing for her short-lived but lively sitcom, “Bette!” (CBS, 2000 ).He made his feature debut as a dress manufacturer in “Mahogany' (1975), starring Diana Ross, and also contributed material to her live act. Mr. Vilanch put his Muppet-like persona to excellent use as Santa's number one helper in the syndicated TV-movie “It Nearly Wasn't Christmas” (1989). On the heels of “Get Bruce!”, Vilanch performed his comedy stylings Off-Broadway in “Bruce Vilanch: Almost Famous” (2000). After a first act reminiscing on his odd path to almost famousness, he opened up the floor to questions in Act II, displaying his amazing ability for off-the-cuff one-liners. As he told US WEEKLY (June 12, 2000), there is a downside to celebrity: “Now, I get knocked if someone tries something that doesn't work. Before it was the fault of these anonymous people, ‘the writers.'”Vilanch began contributing to Academy Awards telecasts in 1989, collaborating with the likes of Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and David Letterman, and graduated to head writer in 2000. He has roasted celebrities like Elizabeth Taylor and President Clinton. The Whoopi connection led to his providing the notorious material Ted Danson performed in blackface at a certain 1993 Friars Club roast of his then-girlfriend Goldberg, but his resume also includes “You Made Me Watch You”, the touching Emmy-winning valedictory Midler crooned as a send-off to Johnny Carson. He scripted most of the Academy Awards telecasts over the last decade, two of which won Emmys, including the one featuring Billy Crystal's Hannibal Lecter entrance. Mr. Vilanch has also written for The Tony's, The Grammy's, The Emmy's, and just about every other award show to brighten your television screen. He also participates and volunteers at almost every charity function, especially those dealing with GLBT issues.

It's the Better Each Day Podcast Radio Show and once again it's me, Bruce Hilliard, bringing you Kaleidoscope Heart. Sometimes I laugh, sometimes I cry, sometimes I let my guard down and let people into my life and my heart. I'm so thankful I'm a songwriter because I can vent my sometimes over the top affection by writing sappy lyrics...and somehow that seems okay. Being too transparent without the guise of a third party doing your dirty work and saying for you “hey, you're just great” is dangerous. There's a confusing unwritten manifesto that states that emojis and greeting cards are safe but to express yourself a little too much on the personal level, depending on the audience, is risking “order in the court cause here come da judge.” I must have reached some sort of emotional security as part of the aging process because I don't care anymore. I just write songs. When this particular song reached it's point of emotional no return I used my favorite new phrase, it's not original, that works well when you run out of words, like when you just kinda trail off, it's “That's all I got.” I use it a few times in song. That's all I got. So, here's the backstory on one of my latest songs and it's all true. I quit growing in the 8th grade and I still sport the same clothes I wore then even though they're resembling cobwebs. Okay, that's not true, I made that up. My friends, sisters Freya and Annie (aka Nitro and Glycerin) saw me playing at a new venue here in Mukilteo called Tapped.  Freya, in her Florence Nightingale mode of feeling nothing but deep sorrow for my wardrobe dysfunction, talked to little sister Annie and they put together a Care package rescue idea in their sorrow for me. It was an instant plan: Get Bruce new clothes NOW, take new promo shots ASAP. Okay, I used my ragamuffin to my advantage but it worked. My latest promos were shot in a racquetball court and basically sucked. Of course, this was all communicated via text. Why? So we could attach images of Napoleon Dynamite and Steve Urkel as our fashion references. We don't do anything very seriously. The brain was designed to function best on a no hassle, fun vibe. Plus, Freya has very good taste. First off, a shopping spree with Freya. She grabbed me by the wrist and with masked faces we stormed the mall like it was weird Black Friday. We had Annie on text for selection approvals. So she was a virtual shopper.  There weren't dressing rooms so trying on pants in the aisle while going commando was a no. (I was actually wearing my 8th grade cobweb undies.) We selected a hundred shirts, some boots and pants and done. Next up the photo session at Annie Wolcott Photography. Annie had her studio set up and ready for various lighting, poses, and change of attire and fun. Later I'm sure she must have deleted many shots of me laughing. It was funner than any photo shoot I remember. Plus, we started off with a homemade scone and awesome coffee. It was fun and for me, a guy who doesn't like posing for photos. It was relatively painless. The promo photos are currently in use. Some with back lighting, some with me stuck to the wall with Velcro and the one shot she laughed at. The one with a cool filter I looked at and said “It looks like a kaleidoscope, a kaleidoscope heart.”  During the shoot, I don't think she caught my comment. That was a title of a song that needed to be written. Kaleidoscope Heart. The rest of the song was written based on what was happening at the time. My friends Freya and Annie, the clothes and photographs and a list of color names I remembered from working at the Home Depot paint department. They have pretty cool poetic names. Medallion, ginger, alabaster, pearl and ivory white. Two verses of Behr paint. I had to cut some of the lyrics. I wrote too many paint verses. It was too easy. The phrase “That's all I got” is one of those personal jokes I think I... Support this podcast

(1999) and his stint as a regular on "Hollywood Squares" (1998- ), for which he also serves as head writer. Known for his eclectic eyewear and collection of unique T-shirts, he began as a child model for Lane Bryant, but when his initial efforts as an actor came to naught, he became an entertainment writer for the Chicago Tribune instead. Impressed by his review of her cabaret performance in 1970, Bette Midler hired him to punch up her act, and he later moved to Los Angeles where he wrote for variety shows like the original "Donny and Marie" and "The Brady Bunch Hour" (both ABC) and provided material for Richard Pryor, Lily Tomlin and Joan Rivers. He has maintained his connection with Midler through the years, working on such projects as the feature "Divine Madness" (1980) and the TV special "Bette Midler--Diva Las Vegas" (HBO, 1997), as well as writing for her sitcom "Bette!" (CBS, 2000- ). Vilanch began contributing to Academy Awards telecasts in 1989, collaborating with the likes of Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and David Letterman, and graduated to head writer in 2000. The Whoopi connection led to his providing the notorious material Ted Danson performed in blackface at a certain 1993 Friars Club roast of his then-girlfriend Goldberg, but his resume also includes "You Made Me Watch You", the touching Emmy-winning valedictory Midler crooned as a send-off to Johnny Carson. He made his feature debut as a dress manufacturer in "Mahogany' (1975), starring Diana Ross (to whose act he also contributed), and put his Muppet-like persona to excellent use as Santa's number one helper in the syndicated TV-movie "It Nearly Wasn't Christmas" (1989). On the heels of "Get Bruce!", Vilanch performed his comedy stylings Off-Broadway in "Bruce Vilanch: Almost Famous" (2000).

Contrary to belief, just because we eat a sufficient amount of protein, doesn’t mean that it’s healthy. To help us understand more about what clean protein is, my guest, Bruce Friedrich, will educate us on why quality and not quantity should matter.    Starting Clean   Bruce Friedrich is a staunch advocate of producing meat that is devoid of chemicals and unethical practices. His mission is to educate people and companies the importance of creating the right environment to sustain plant-based and clean meat for consumers.   “I’ve been working against industrial farming. Because I saw what happened to companies who are creating better, healthier, more sustainable products that people want to consume,” said Bruce Friedrich.    The Good Food Institute   The Good Food Institute was established by Bruce Friedrich to develop definitive steps towards producing clean food that is healthy to eat and delicious. Ultimately, these little steps also significantly help prevent the destruction of our planet as far as environmental issues are concerned.    “Pretty much everyone makes their food purchasing decisions with considerations about taste, price, and convenience,” Bruce Friedrich said. “Hence, we can transform agriculture away from the industrial use of animals by creating products that people want to buy. That’s the purpose of The Good Food Institute.”   Clean Protein   Now, what is clean protein? It’s hard to find food that is considered clean protein. Most food products are laden with chemicals, pesticides, and heavy metals. These can be found in commercial meat, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy products.    According to Bruce Friedrich, if we’re not picky about the quality of the food we eat, there will be negative consequences health-wise. So how do we make sure it’s clean protein?    For starters, buy food from a reputable source, especially meats. One solution that The Good Food Institute came up with was to grow meat from a small cell sample. This way, there is no need to slaughter animals.    The Solution   Clean meat is still considered real meat. However, it is safer to consume because it has no chemicals or residue from bacteria. And because of the way it was made, harmful greenhouse gas emissions from factories can also be avoided. Hence, a significant advantage to our environment.    According to Bruce Friedrich, food scientists are likewise looking into the same procedure to produce healthy and high-quality plant-based foods. Plants are being sourced to create plant-based meats, eggs, and dairy products. In fact, some companies in the U.S. and Europe are already producing clean meat products using this concept.    Clean Protein Book   The book is co-authored with Kathy Freston. Bruce Friedrich says the Clean Protein Book is an excellent resource for whoever wants to learn everything there is to know about clean protein.    According to Bruce Friedrich, the Clean Protein book is an inspiration from a book he read 30 years ago, called the Diet For A Small Planet. The book also includes the lessons he learned ever since he practiced a plant-based diet since he was 18 years old.    “Kathy and I were both investigating the science of nutrition for decades.  Plant-based is cleaner protein. People get sick from eating contaminated meat. They get hospitalized and die,” said Bruce Friedrich.   The Harsh Reality   According to Bruce Friedrich, many Americans are prone to sickness and obesity. Apparently, most of the diseases they suffer from are dietary diseases. Hence, it is essential that we make changes in what we eat before it’s too late.    “Vegetarian and vegan diets are healthy for every stage of life from infancy to very old age. The diet makes people less prone to heart disease and stroke,” explains Bruce Friedrich.     Meatless Mondays   Health authorities have been more aggressive over the years promoting a meatless diet.  In fact, Bruce Friedrich says there’s a program called Meatless Mondays which is supported by several schools of public health.    Meatless Mondays mostly encourage people to shift away from animal products consumption one day a week. Under the program, people should eat the meat size of a deck of cards. And according to Bruce Friedrich, the more you eat legumes, nuts, and whole grains as a protein source, the healthier you’re going to be.   “One of the things that The Good Food is working on, is finding a way to deliver high-quality protein in the form of plant-based meat that people want to consume,” said Bruce Friedrich. “For people who want to eat real meat, eating cultured meat is an option that is so much better for the environment and cleaner product.”   B-12 and Fiber   Bruce Friedrich says we can get our daily dose of B-12 from the environment. And since B-12 is created from bacteria, Bruce Friedrich says that the most convenient option would be to take a B-12 supplement.    Furthermore, Bruce Friedrich says that among people who are entirely plant-based, the rate of those with iron-deficiency anemia is not higher than it is in the general population. However, people who are on a plant-based diet are suffering from much lower rate of the diseases like heart disease and diabetes.   “The more whole plant-based food you eat, the healthier you will be. Furthermore, 97% of Americans are not taking in enough fiber,” Bruce Friedrich explains.    He adds, “Women should take at least 25 grams of fiber a day, while men must take 38 grams of fiber. The average person’s intake is 15 grams. Therefore, we must make it a point to get enough protein and fiber because it lowers the rate of diseases.”    Bio Bruce Friedrich graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown Law and Phi Beta Kappa from Grinnell College. He also holds degrees from Johns Hopkins University and the London School of Economics.    Bruce Friedrich is a popular speaker on college campuses and has delivered presentations on food innovation at most of the nation’s top universities, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, and MIT. He has co-authored two books, including the forthcoming Clean Protein: The Revolution That Will Reshape Your Body, Boost Your Energy—and Save Our Planet with New York Times bestselling author Kathy Freston, contributed chapters to five books, and authored seven law review articles.   Get Connected With Bruce Friedrich! The Boyz of OUTSpoken talk to Bruce Vilanch and Jeffery Johns creator of “Waiting in the Wings”OUTSpoken Jeffrey A Johns started singing and dancing ever since he was old enough to walk and talk. In fact, he was performing in his church choir before he even knew how to read! At a young age he performed in local theatre and the oldest running Minstrel Show in the world. I guess it’s no surprise that Jeffrey still loves the music of Vaudeville. When he wasn’t on stage, Jeffrey was a competitive swimmer and a Boy Scout. To many people’s surprise, this song and dance guy eventually earned the rank of Eagle Scout. After high school Jeffrey went off to college and continued studying theatre, but decided he also wanted to focus on children’s entertainment. He graduated from Manhattanville College with a degree in Elementary Education and Performance. Following college, Jeffrey moved to California where he was performing at Disneyland, with regional theater companies, on national/international tours, sweeping movie theatre floors, and living off peanut butter and jelly while enjoying the life of an actor. Eventually he headed to Las Vegas performing with the cast of Naked Boys Singing and Tony ‘n Tina’s Wedding at the Planet Hollywood. With his return to California, Jeffrey continued to performing in theatre, but also started working in film and television. He appeared several times on America’s Got Talent and a variety of television series, web-series, and feature films. He wrote a children’s book entitled, “Have You Ever Tried To Stop The Rain?” and the feature film, Waiting In The Wings: The Musical.   Synopsis: Waiting In The Wings: The Musical is a feature film where two entertainers, destined for the big time, are mismatched in a casting office from two very different online contests. Tony, a stripper from New York, is cast in an Off-Broadway musical and needs to trade in his tear-away trunks for tap shoes and tights. Anthony, a naive musical theatre enthusiast from Montana, needs to decide if he can strip all the way down just to stay in town. Hilarity ensues as they realize that “to make it” they’re gonna have to learn some new tricks. Shirley Jones, Sally Struthers, and Lee Meriwether round out this heartwarming homage to Broadway with some delightful cameos. He has co-authored twenty-three Academy Award spectacles, winning two writing Emmys in the process (almost as good a nominee/win ratio as Meryl Streep’s). He has also been nominated for seven other Emmys — one of them was for his participation on the celebrity panel of HOLLYWOOD SQUARES, where he resided for six years just to the left of Whoopi on your screen. For two years, he starred on Broadway and the road as Edna Turblad, Baltimore’s most glamorous plus-sized tootsie, in the musical HAIRSPRAY. His one-man show, ALMOST FAMOUS – he had that title first, dammit – was a big hit a few years before that. He is so well-known as a provider of comic material for other performers that Harvey Weinstein made a documentary about it (during the Miramax years). GET BRUCE features comic deconstructions by such Vilanch collaborators as Bette Midler, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg and a roster of others from Michael Douglas (soon to be seen as Liberace!) to Nathan Lane to Paul Reiser to Lily Tomlin to Shirley MacLaine. In addition to the Oscars, he has co-written many Tonys, Emmys, Grammys, Peoples Choice, American Comedy Awards, TV Land Awards, SAG Awards, and a ton of other pageants, roasts, tributes and various trumped-up reasons for people to enjoy t&a on a red carpet. Many of his collaborators have gone to Broadway with his material, including Diana Ross, Michael Feinstein and Michael Buble’ and the late Peter Allen, whose stage shows he wrote and subsequently re-wrote for Hugh Jackman when he played Peter in THE BOY FROM OZ. He has co-authored multiple dozens of variety television shows and actually put words in the mouth of Cher. People recognize him a lot – some think he’s Michael Moore, but no – from his appearances on MILLIONAIRE MATCHMAKER, CELEBRITY FIT CLUB (where he lost 21 lbs, which he subsequently found), THE WORLD’S DUMBEST CRIMINALS, THE 100 MOST SHOCKING MOMENTS IN SHOW BUSINESS, LIVE WITH REGIS & ELLY (where he shaved his beard to play Edna), JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE, THE VIEW, THE JOY BEHAR SHOW, MATCH GAME (a special version hosted by Ricki Lake) and a raft of others. He’s also a lyricist, scoring gold and platinum records for disco songs he wrote for Eartha Kitt (WHERE IS MY MAN?) and Village People. Pre-HAIRSPRAY, geeks of all ages will remember him as Weird Wendon, the evil emperor with a big head but no body, in ICE PIRATES, or in THE MORNING AFTER (with Jane Fonda). Musical theatre geeks will remember him as the co-author of the Broadway misfire called PLATINUM, which was revived off-Broadway last season for reasons which continue to mystify Bruce.
