On today's show we create alternate reality TV Spinoffs of some of our favorite TV shows. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: What Fox's Roku Acquisition Signals For Local Broadcast Wurl Chief Warns FAST Business Model Is 'Fundamentally Flawed' Walmart in reported $1.4 billion deal to acquire connected TV ad platform Google Home will soon get better at recognizing you Other: Pioneer SPHERA car stereo review Clever Spinoffs to Our Favorite TV Shows HBO Max is making a clever spinoff from "The Big Bang Theory" called "Stuart Fails to Save the Universe". The show follows comic book store owner Stuart Bloom from The Big Bang Theory in a new series where he attempts - and apparently fails - to save the universe, staying true to his unlucky nature. The spinoff consists of ten episodes, streaming every Thursday at 9 PM. It debuts July 23 on HBO Max . So this got us thinking about some cool spinoffs with quirky characters from other shows we've watched over the years. Here are three clever spinoff concepts in the same spirit as Stuart Fails to Save the Universe: Jack Bauer from 24 Title: 24/7 After finally retiring from CTU, Jack Bauer is forced to take a mundane job as head of security at a mid-sized suburban office park in Los Angeles — mostly to keep his health insurance. Still operating with the intensity, paranoia, and zero-tolerance policy that once saved the world multiple times, Jack now applies his elite counter-terrorism skills to everyday annoyances: package thieves, passive-aggressive HR Manager, broken printers, and the HOA president who keeps violating noise ordinances. Every episode plays out in real time (a 24-minute comedy format), following Jack as he tackles a new "crisis" — whether it's a missing office dog, a suspected mole in accounting, or an all-out war with the food truck that keeps getting his lunch order wrong. Jack still does dramatic split-screen monologues, tortures (metaphorically) the vending machine, and keeps a "go bag" full of zip ties and protein bars in his desk. His long-suffering team includes a burnt-out millennial assistant, a retired cop who just wants to nap, and his daughter Kim, who keeps trying to get him into therapy. Tagline: He saved the world 8 times. Now he has to survive the corporate retreat. Chandler and Monica of Friends Title: The One Where They're Spies After years of marriage, Chandler Bing and Monica Geller have the perfect cover: a boring, stable suburban life in New Jersey. Chandler works as a "data analyst" for a vague government contractor, and Monica runs a high-end catering business. In reality, they're a highly skilled CIA husband-and-wife operative team. Chandler's deadpan sarcasm and quick wit make him an elite handler and master of undercover personas. Monica's terrifying organizational skills, attention to detail, and competitive nature make her an absolute weapon in logistics, interrogation, and hand-to-hand combat (she once took down three targets with a perfectly thrown fondue fork). While they're out saving the world from international threats, they have to keep their double lives completely hidden from Ross, Rachel, Joey, and Phoebe — who still think Chandler hates his job and Monica is just an obsessive chef. Every episode balances high-stakes spy action with classic Friends-style comedy as the couple frantically tries to explain away their suspicious behavior: "Why do you have a go-bag in the closet?" "Why does Chandler suddenly speak fluent Mandarin?" "Why was Monica gone for three days and came back with a new scar and a Russian accent?" Tagline: They're saving the world… between coffee at Central Perk. Charles Boyle from Brooklyn 99 Title: Boyle After a high-profile case goes sideways, Detective Charles Boyle is transferred to the NYPD's newly formed Unsolved & Unusual Crimes Unit — a ragtag squad that handles cold cases too weird or embarrassing for anyone else. Still the passionate, food-obsessed, emotionally open romantic we know and love, Boyle now channels his legendary enthusiasm into solving the city's strangest unsolved mysteries: everything from a serial killer who leaves gourmet meals at crime scenes to a black-market truffle smuggling ring. He attacks each case with the same intensity he once reserved for perfecting his coq au vin recipe. Backed by a small team of misfits (a jaded ex-homicide detective, a tech genius who only communicates in food puns, and a rookie who idolizes him), Boyle brings both razor-sharp detective work and delightful chaos to every investigation. He still cries during interrogations, quotes obscure food history mid-stakeout, and maintains an emergency "comfort cassoulet" in the precinct fridge. Tagline: He may cry at crime scenes… but he always gets his man.

Pack your bags and head to small town Champaign, Illinois with Producer Brandon for one last year of the Roger Ebert Overlooked Film Festival, affectionately known to movie-lovers as Ebertfest. Brought back for a final year, festival organizers Chaz Ebert and Nate Kohn programmed a lineup of modern classics and under-the-radar films audiences may have missed. First, Brandon sits down with actress Betty Gabriel following a screening of her film, Get Out (now coming up on its 10-year anniversary). Critically acclaimed for her role as housekeeper-with-a-disturbing-secret Georgina, Betty reflects on being a part of Jordan Peele's beloved horror-social satire's legacy. The conversation then pivots to Betty's current and upcoming projects in television and film. Get Out is currently available to stream on HBO Max.Next, Brandon is joined by writer-director Tracie Laymon & actor French Stewart of the Barbie Ferreira & John Leguizamo dramedy, Bob Trevino Likes It. The film follows a lonely young woman (Ferreira) who strikes up a relationship online with a stranger (Leguizamo) who shares the name of her own narcissistic father (Stewart). After premiering at the South by Southwest Film Festival, the crowd-pleasing film received both the Narrative Feature Grand Jury Award and the Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature. Tapping into her own experience with her own father, Tracie discusses the semiautobiographical nature of her film and how the personal themes and narrative have resonated with audiences from all walks of life. In this joint interview, French Stewart provides insight into his role as an unsupportive father and how he approached playing this antagonistic character with pathos and three-dimensionality. Tracie then touches on how following the worldwide success of Barbie, Mattel Studios hired her to write and direct a live-action film based on the discontinued 90's cult toy, Tony The Tattooed Man. What does a Lion King–level director really think about AI “slop,” streaming wars and whether machines can ever tell great stories? On this episode of the AI XR Podcast, Charlie Fink and Ted Schilowitz talk with Rob Minkoff, director of The Lion King, Stuart Little, The Haunted Mansion, Forbidden Kingdom and Paws of Fury, about the future of filmmaking as AI, streaming consolidation and new tools reshape the business.Rob shares how he watched Netflix “eat Hollywood” by doing streaming better than the legacy studios, why Netflix walking away from Warner Bros. and letting Paramount overpay is bad news for creators, and what fewer buyers means for directors and writers trying to sell original work. He explains why he sees AI tools like Seed Dance as potentially both iceberg and Noah's Ark, and why he believes the average will rise but the cream will still rise higher: tools may let anyone make competent images, but audiences will still chase the one-in-a-thousand voices that have something genuinely new and human to say.In XR News You Should Know, the host cover Anthropic's standoff with the Pentagon over using large, unstable models for high-stakes military decisions, Netflix walking away from a Warner Bros. deal and collecting a breakup fee while Paramount overpays, streaming brand confusion around HBO/Max and Paramount+, VITURE's new raise and its patent fight with XREAL over “birdbath” smart-glasses optics, and Google's Gemini gaining multi-step action capabilities on Samsung and Pixel phones before Apple's Siri catches up.The conversation digs into whether AI will really make feature films cheaper and more common, or just flood social feeds with short-form “AI slop.” Rob compares AI tools to word processors and home recording studios: they are powerful, but they don't turn you into Bruce Springsteen or Steven Spielberg. He argues that empathy, taste and genuinely fresh perspective will remain the differentiators, and that audiences will quickly tune out work that feels derivative, even if it looks slick. He also raises a bigger question: if AI drives productivity to the point where work is optional for many people, what happens to purpose, competition and the human psyche?Key Moments01:16 – Anthropic vs. the Pentagon and why unstable AI systems may never meet military safety standards02:42 – Netflix exits the Warner Bros. deal, collects a breakup fee and leaves Paramount holding the bag05:31 – HBO, Max, Paramount+ branding confusion and what happens to these streaming labels06:00 – VITURE's $100M raise, XREAL patent lawsuits and the simple science behind “birdbath” smart glasses07:31 – Why Miami is becoming a new tech and defense hub and what that signals about America's “neighborhood”10:00 – Seed Dance 2.0, Hollywood's deepfake panic and the “ship first, apologize later” strategy15:16 – Rob joins: 34 years in film, Netflix “eating Hollywood” and what consolidation means for creators19:18 – Seed Dance, stolen IP and whether AI tools are an iceberg or Noah's Ark for filmmakers24:39 – Can AI become a true “prophet,” or can it only emulate empathy and taste?30:57 – Will AI make many more animated movies or just flood the world with average content?37:32 – If AI does most of the work, what's left for humans—and can entertainment absorb all that free time? This episode is a grounded, filmmaker's view of where AI fits: powerful tools, real risks, but no substitute for a human vision that cuts through the noise. Rob's perspective is invaluable if you're trying to understand what will actually matter in a world where everyone can generate “good enough” images on demand. This episode is brought to you by Zappar, creators of Mattercraft, the leading visual development environment for building immersive 3D web experiences for mobile, headsets and desktop. Mel Brooks is about to turn 100 years old! When Mel celebrates his upcoming birthday on June 28th, filmmaker Michael Bonfiglio, who has directed (along with Judd Apatow) a joyful and action-packed two-part HBO documentary about the legendary comic and filmmaker, might want to talk to the folks at HBO about changing the title of their film: “Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!” Otherwise, I'd advise not changing a thing. Joining Ken on the pod, Michael talks about how Judd's comedic bona vides probably made the difference in convincing Mel to participate in the film. Michael, who previously teamed up with Judd to direct the Emmy-winning documentary “George Carlin's American Dream” (check out Michael Merrill's “Top Docs” season 2 interview with Michael), compares the two comedians and projects. We discuss what has made Mel such a special and impactful comedic force, from his homespun “2,000 Year Old Man” skit, performed with best friend Carl Reiner, to his work in early television, culminating in his breakout film career (“The Producers”, “Blazing Saddles,” ‘Young Frankenstein”, “Spaceballs,” etc.). We discuss Mel's marriage to actress Anne Bancroft and his lingering pain since her death. Not to get too serious, Michael ends by sharing his favorite Mel Brooks moment. Lucky for us, with Mel still creatively active (“Spaceballs: The New One”!), there will no doubt be more signature Mel Brooks moments to come. Happy Birthday, Mel! “Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!” is streaming on HBO Max. The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix. Follow: @mbonfiglio2000 on Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and X

DP James Whitaker, ASC breaks down the look of HBO's DTF St. Louis: street photographs, a brutalist style police station, and inobtrusively lighting intimacy. Podcast highlights include: -How street photography, not cinema, was the right reference point for shooting ordinary suburbs. -What led to the unusual set design and lighting of one of the key locations, featuring a brutalist interior that feels right out of Eastern Europe. -Engineering a remote-controlled lighting rig for the show's many intimate scenes, so that the mood never had to be broken. Join us LIVE AT FIVE (PT) on YouTube for the watch party every Wednesday: https://www.youtube.com/@birdsandbeesdontfck Caitlin V is a sex and relationship coach, former sexuality researcher, author of Harder, Better, Longer, Stronger, and host of Good Sex on HBO Max from Michigan where her earliest sex education included a fifth-grade period lesson, a graphic STI scare slide in health class, and years of curiosity about pleasure that she had already discovered on her own. In this episode we talk about what men actually want help with in their sex lives, why performance goals like "lasting longer" rarely solve the real problem, and how intimacy, not frequency, is what most couples are actually craving. Caitlin shares how she went from academic sex research at the Kinsey Institute to coaching men about sex and relationships, why maintenance sex can quietly kill desire, and how intention, presence, and curiosity can transform a sex life. We also get into astrology and sexual chemistry, loud sex and the connection between breath and orgasm, group dynamics in intimacy, why coaching spaces for men matter, and the surprising way Caitlin realized academia wasn't where she wanted to make her impact. Presented by HBO Max | For Your Consideration – HALF MAN – Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour or More)Production Designer Emer O'Sullivan joins Decorating Pages to discuss the production design of the HBO/BBC limited series Half Man, created by Emmy-winning Richard Gadd and starring Richard Gadd and Jamie Bell.Emer breaks down the design of Half Man, including Laurie's house, the boys' bedroom, the kitchen, the hospital room, the prison visiting room, the wedding locations, and the Glasgow architecture that grounds the story across multiple decades. In this conversation, Emer talks about using social realism photography, fashion photography, mood boards, hand drawings, wallpaper, pattern, color, and Scottish municipal architecture to create a world that feels emotionally truthful. She also discusses the responsibility of portraying working-class homes with warmth, pride, and specificity, rather than reducing them to gray or downtrodden spaces.Kim and Emer also discuss the “cozy claustrophobic” design of Laurie's house, the pistachio and pink palette, how domestic spaces change over time, building the upstairs of the house, transforming a rough location into a major set in eight days, and designing the prison visiting room with glass, brutalist influence, and controlled discomfort. This episode is a must-listen for fans of Half Man, Richard Gadd, Jamie Bell, HBO dramas, production design, set decoration, Scottish television, character-driven interiors, and anyone interested in how sets carry emotion, memory, trauma, and story.Half Man is now streaming on HBO Max.For Your Consideration: HALF MAN — Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour or More)

399 Disclosure Day TMNT Pizza Ocarina Remake Management RegretDoom Scrolling IntroThe Foos are one episode away from 400, and while a big blowout special is still a “real big maybe,” they take a moment to acknowledge the milestone and the long, weird road to getting there. They recap a productive weekend, including house chores and a trip to LA to see Sparta open for Local H opening for The Toadies at the Belasco. Joe nerds out over Sparta's At the Drive-In connection, Local H's two-piece setup that somehow sounds like a full band, and The Toadies delivering plenty from the Possum Kingdom era. Also: a drunk guy in the pit goes way harder than the songs require. This week's Florida story features a fugitive accused of stealing crab legs from Winn-Dixie, then allegedly hiding inside an air conditioner air handler behind ductwork while his girlfriend hides in a closet. Because in Florida, seafood theft apparently turns you into HVAC.Geeking Out starts with Steven Spielberg's new alien thriller Disclosure Day, which opened big and brings Spielberg back into the alien-movie conversation. The Foos talk practical creativity versus AI, including Emily Blunt reportedly creating her alien clicking voice herself instead of using AI.Then it's food and nostalgia: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pizzeria is opening in Santa Monica on June 20, fully decked out with cartoon-style décor, merch, neon turtle faces, and a pizza pickup counter designed like the front of the Turtle Van. They also shout out 50 Burger in Upland as a legit local smash burger spot.Nintendo drops a nostalgia bomb with a Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time remake planned for 2026, plus Switch/Switch 2 news and more from Nintendo Direct. The Foos compare it to the larger trend of remakes and remasters like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy.DC talk continues with Lanterns, the upcoming HBO Max series being pitched like a darker detective drama in the style of True Detective, plus My Adventures with Superman returning with a Reign of Superman-inspired season.Steph also spotlights Larry David's upcoming historical comedy series The Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America, which looks exactly like Larry David being dropped into major moments in history and complaining his way through them.Tech Talk makes a brief appearance with Logitech's MobiFold, a tiny foldable portable mouse that sounds surprisingly practical. They also remind listeners that Doug Brody's Shelley: Our Evolution is coming out June 19, and Steph is already deep into the book. Here's What I Would Do gets unusually existential:Michael (Irvine) got the management promotion he worked toward for years, but now misses the hands-on work he actually enjoyed.Rachel (Pasadena) isn't sure whether she wants kids, because both versions of the future — parenthood or child-free life — seem like they could be happy, and choosing one means letting go of the other.ChaptersDoom Scrolling IntroIntroOne episode away from 400 + possible milestone episodeBelasco recap Sparta Local H ToadiesDrunk pit energy during songs that did not need itFlorida fugitive steals crab legs hides in air conditionerGeeking Out Spielberg alien thriller Disclosure DayEmily Blunt practical alien voice vs AITMNT pizzeria opening in Santa Monica June 2050 Burger Upland smash burger shoutoutNintendo Direct Ocarina of Time remake nostalgia bombLanterns HBO Max True Detective superhero vibeMy Adventures with Superman Reign of Superman seasonLarry David historical comedy series previewLogitech MobiFold foldable portable mouseDoug Brody Shelley Our Evolution June 19Here's What I Would Do Promotion regret Michael IrvineHere's What I Would Do Deciding whether to have kids Rachel PasadenaOutro + Doom Scrolling Outro

Welcome back to This Person I Met! My name is Kayla and I'm the host of this podcast.Since the release of Heated Rivalry, a show commissioned by Canada's Crave and distributed by HBO Max originally written by Rachel Reid, queer media has had some of the greatest visibility I've personally ever seen in my life. From Young Royals to Red, White, and Royal Blue to Girls Like Girls to Leviticus, it seems as if, finally, queer folk are being eagerly represented. Sometimes, though, I cannot help but wonder if representation is inherently progressive, or if the undertones to the sudden intent from large corporations to depict queer folk could be sinister. How does capitalistic demand drive which “type” of queer person is shown in media? Where is the line drawn between fetishization and appreciation? Is there even a “right” way to create and market queer media to a predominantly straight audience?Joe Halsch, the director of The Jim Toy Center in Ann Arbor, a community for queer folk and allies dedicated to advocacy and community engagement, helps answer these questions during this 2-part segment in which we discuss the history of queer representation and its implications in modern day media, as well as his own thoughts and experiences regarding queerness.Without further ado, here's Joe.

Send us Fan MailIn this episode of Neo News, Ben and Eli discuss the cultural phenomenon of HBO Max's new hit medical drama, The Pitt. Sparked by an insightful critique in The New Yorker by Dr. Dhruv Khullar, they dive into why this Noah Wyle-led series is capturing the attention of millions of Americans, including healthcare workers and patients alike. They explore how the show's unflinching portrayal of systemic failures, from ER overcrowding to uninsured patients leaving against medical advice, mirrors their daily reality in the hospital. Tune in as they discuss whether the shared humanity seen on screen can bridge the gap between doctors and patients or simply highlight the exhausting "pit" of modern medicine!----The Pitt: https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-lede/what-the-pitt-taught-me-about-being-a-doctorSupport the showAs always, feel free to send us questions, comments, or suggestions to our email: nicupodcast@gmail.com. The Pitt Season 2 has come to a close and Sepideh Moafi has delivered a downright brilliant first-season arc as Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi. She kicked off her run in the series by swooping into the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center Emergency Department to cover for Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) during his upcoming sabbatical. Rather than wait for Robby to give her the lay of the land, Dr. Al-Hashimi jumps in feet first, immediately inserting herself into the goings-on at the hospital. As Moafi herself put it, “It was set up for her to disrupt the rhythm of this established hospital. Dr. Robby is America's golden boy, or the world's, really, golden boy, so anyone who comes in his path is going to be scrutinized to a certain degree.”In the early episodes of Season 2, she was indeed scrutinized — by Dr. Robby and the colleagues that would eventually have to work under her on the show, and also by The Pitt fans concerned about Dr. Al-Hashimi upending the ED foundation and group dynamic established during the events of Season 1. Over the course of the day, strengths and weaknesses are unearthed, but perhaps more important than anything, so is her purpose: “Delivering and finding ways within this broken system to find creative solutions to deliver the best quality care for patients.” Moafi added another concept inspired by Toni Morrison that she held especially tight to; “If you are free, your job is to free somebody else. If you have some power, then you need to empower somebody else.” Dr. Al-Hashimi abides by those principles every step of the way in The Pitt Season 2, and at the end of the season, it's revealed that while working toward those goals, she's also trying to figure out how to live her life and do her work with a seizure disorder. With all of The Pitt Season 2 now available to watch on HBO Max, Moafi carved out the time for a Collider Ladies Night conversation to revisit her journey to the hit medical drama and also her experience making Dr. Al-Hashimi's Season 2 arc feel especially full. On top of that, Moafi also took a moment to look to the future.
