It's no secret that the so-called "hyperscalers"—Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Meta, and others—are doing their hyperscaling in the context of the AI revolution. The pace of digital infrastructure buildout is mind-boggling—about $450 billion in 2024 and with no sign of slowing. All of this has implications for the water sector. So I wanted to talk to someone who is a) in the thick of this, and b) has been part of a hyperscaler's water work for some time. Will Hewes is a superb guy, a proper water veteran all the way from his undergrad work, and he took his considerable expertise in infrastructure into running water resources first at AWS, and now across all of Amazon. They have been at the forefront of basin-wide sustainability efforts, and it was so energizing to hear how an "intrapreneur" builds inside a company like Amazon, all the way down to how these individual projects get done. Please enjoy my conversation with Will Hewes. Hewes details the two-pronged approach: internal efficiency improvements (ex. direct evaporative cooling design reducing L/kWh, real-time monitoring, using recycled water), and external replenishment projects. These projects, chosen for local impact and verified credibility, address needs like WASH access or agricultural irrigation efficiency, often catalysing tech adoption. 00:00 - How AI and Data Centers Are Reshaping Water Demand 03:40 - Amazon's Water Positive Strategy Explained 05:00 - Sustainable Cooling in Data Centers with Water Efficiency 08:45 - Shifting from Potable to Recycled Water Sources 11:49 - How Amazon Builds Global Water Replenishment Projects 13:55 - Partnering with Startups to Scale Smart Irrigation 18:24 - Measuring Impact and Verifying Replenishment Claims 21:55 - The Reality of Corporate Water Risk Assessment 24:45 - Why Hyperscalers Collaborate on Water Stewardship 27:33 - Balancing Growth with High-Quality Sustainability Practices 30:33 - Lessons from Will Hewes' Career in Water Infrastructure 34:44 - Why Scalable, Fast-Adopting Water Tech Wins 43:21 - Advice for Water Entrepreneurs Links: Burnt Island Ventures: https://www.burntislandventures.com/ Will Hewes: https://www.linkedin.com/in/will-hewes-61947232/ SM Material Key Takeaways: "Water is the most fundamental resource. It's about public health, urban planning, and managing wild spaces." "Water is key to cooling strategies in data centers. It reduces energy use and meets sustainability goals." "Our Water Positive program commits to returning more water to communities than we use." "Efficiency and recycled water are cornerstones of our water sustainability strategy." "Water replenishment projects must respond to local watershed challenges." "Technology can unlock water security and reduce carbon associated with water treatment." "Collaborate with partners to implement innovative water solutions that address local needs."
How does someone who is living, like it or not, in the last third of life, address everybody else who is living in the second third? It's an important question, cuz most of the time it's like two ships passing in the night. An older Episcopal priest used to come up to me about once a week -- he was assisting in a busy parish where I was rector -- and say, "Hey, Paul, relax. You're working too hard. Please, relax." Every time he did that -- and his "intentions were good" (The Animals, 1965) -- I'd get a-fib! Literally, my heart would jump and I'd get a-fib. What this nice man said was kindly intended, but it always had the opposite effect....: a-fib. So hey, how can Hewes Hull, my conversation partner this week, and yours truly say what our experience and our faith has taught us -- mostly through impasse and insuperabilities -- in such a way that it can get through to a normal, busy (i.e., stressed) listener? That is the Question. I think the podcast probably works. And mainly because of a story Hewes tells, from his own life, near the end. Oh, and there's the music, too, and especially the last, eternal track. So, hey, you out there,... Relax. LUV U, PZ
While one was within the second third of one's life, one had all these goals in view, of happy marriage, happy fathering, and (most of all, sadly) successful careering. That was the way it was -- and probably the way it is, at least for some who may be reading this. And in that (now) embarrassing order, too. But at this point it's beginning to look a little bankrupt -- at least the order of valuation. Maybe "superficial" is a better word. So "What Now, My Love?" (H. Alpert/M. Ryder/Sonny & Cher... ad infinitum). Is the last third of life, i.e., for those of us among the "new demographic", disillusionment and moping; or compulsed repetition; or possibly/impossibly "Behold, I do a New Thing" (Isaiah 43:19)? Today, and again next week, my friend Hewes Hull and I will be discussing this (to us, core) theme: What Now, My Love? Is it Marcus-Aurelian grinning-and-bearing it? Or maybe assisted suicide, even? Or again, "Something Better Beginning" (The Kinks, 1965)? Hewes has had a fine career practising law and then in private equity finance. He has an extraordinary wife, Trent, of 31 years. Hewes himself is 57 years of age. (A young man, as I now pronounce him.) His chief hobbies are theology, jujitsu and hunting/fishing. Hope you'll enjoy our conversation. Oh, and I hope you'll LUV the closing track, by... wait for it... Bobby Sherman! LUV U.

On the PRmoment Podcast this week, we're talking to James Hewes, CEO of the PRCA. James joined the PRCA in January this year. The organisation had been in an uncertain state for a year or so because of the long-term illness and untimely passing of previous CEO Francis Ingham. In 2023/4, the PRCA set off on a governance review and subsequently made significant changes to its structure, senior team and member offer. So, I thought it would be good to get James on the show to give an update on his plans for the PRCA and what he's been up to for the first six months of his tenure. The PRCA has a turnover of £3.8 m.Before we start, our PR Masterclass: Agency Growth Forum has now launched. It's on 12th November 2024, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm GMT. Both face-to-face and virtual tickets are available. The event is held in central London. The final entry for the ESG and Sustainability Awards deadline is 27th of September. Finally, thanks so much to the PRmoment Podcast sponsors the PRCA.Here's a summary of what James and PRmoment founder discussed: 2 mins What state was the PRCA as an organisation in when you started?“We were probably doing too much stuff. There was a tendency to throw resources and activity at every single thing…rather than stopping and thinking what was the best value for members.”4 mins Was the PRCA's governance review worth it?“The positive outcome of the governance review: there's a lot more transparency…there's more opportunity for members to get involved in a structured way.”“It (the governance review) has simplified things dramatically.”6 mins James updates us on the PRCA's finances.“The numbers were a bit tough for 2023, they'll be a bit tough for 2024, but the organisation is on a much much more stable footing.”“The organisation has been a break-even business for a very long time. In a world of great uncertainty, you need to be a bit better than that.”“We are non-profit making with a good cash reserve…we're cash generative.”10 mins Are the PRCA's membership numbers growing again?11 mins Over the years, there have been stop-and-start rumours about the CIPR and the PRCA merging. Are there any active conversations on that side of things at the moment?12 mins Where does James want to take the PRCA under his leadership?19 mins The PRCA's Articles of Association talk about growing the organisation internationally. James talks about how that has gone so far.22 mins Who are the key people at the PRCA now?23.30 mins What does James see as the most important issues affecting the PR sector currently?

In last week's blog, we looked at researcher/investigator Hayden Hewes and some of the cases he looked into. One of those was in Aurora, Texas, where a UFO was reported to have crashed in 1897, killing its not-of-this-world pilot. The pilot was said to have been buried in the local cemetery, and an enthusiastic Hewes attempted and failed to get an exhumation order. The case has endured in the UFO mythos despite the likelihood that the story was made up by a reporter trying to raise some publicity for a dying town. In the midst of the publicity stirred up by Hewes and other investigators, Jim and Coral Lorenzen of the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization expressed their doubts in their publication, the A.P.R.O. Bulletin. Read more →
When it comes to having an interest in the subject of UFOs, there are those who enjoy it casually, those study it more deeply, and those who become active as investigator/researchers. As for the latter type, some, such as Max B. Miller, start young. Miller was the president of the Junior Flying Saucer League at age 15 in 1952, and in 1953, was the editor of Saucers, a magazine he and his group, Flying Saucers International, put out until 1960. In 1953, Miller came up with the idea to organize a convention and FSI organized what was billed as “The World's First Flying Saucer Convention.” It was held at the Hollywood Hotel from August 16–18, 1953, and was moderated by FSI member Jeron King Criswell, whom some readers may know as the narrator for Ed Wood's masterpiece, Plan 9 From Outer Space. Another precocious UFOlogist, Hayden Hewes, started the International UFO Bureau in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the age of 13 in 1957. Hewes may not be as well known as Miller is to some readers, but he and his group were involved in some cases that should be.Read more →

We are talking about Lifelong Youth, that is how to live not just a long life, but a long, happy and vibrant life. Dr. Parker has tons of insight to share (I mean he has written a book on it). This will be part one of the discussion! Parker is a dynamic chiropractor and life enthusiast. His dream is to help transform Jackson into a Blue Zone of the longest living, healthiest, and happiest people on the planet. He notes that Jackson is already well on its way to this achievement, and is excited to be joining such a wonderful community. In order to stay happy and healthy himself, Parker is a dabbler, a lifelong student, and a goofball. Name any sport, yard game, or outdoor activity, and he'd be ready to play. Got a recommendation for a book, podcast, or blog? He'll be the first to give it a look. And if you see someone walking barefoot and dancing with no music, it's probably Parker. Dr. Parker has also written a book called “Lifelong Youth: The Simple Path to a Long and Youthful Life.” He will use this book as an educational tool for patients and community members to support their health journey. We are excited for our community to get to know him and his talent, energy, and beautiful caring spirit. Order the Lifelong Youth book here. https://www.lifelongyouthbook.com/ https://www.facebook.com/LifelongYouth https://www.instagram.com/mylifelongyouth/ Follow along on our Health in the Hole Facebook page. As a woman in theatre body image, health & fitness can be a pressing topic, especially as a dancer, Today's guest, Samm Hewes Cramer has been dancing since she could walk! Dance is where her active lifestyle and love for moving began. As a dancer her transition into the fitness industry was seamless and continues to be the best way she know how to express herself. We get one body; take great care of it and love it through all its seasons. There's a mindset, food will make me fat, but the reality is what are you eating? If you are eating whole foods, it's hard to reach 2300 calories a day. We need to retrain our brains and educate ourselves on the food that gives us the best energy. Nutrition is the biggest part of any fitness journey. We have to study in order to get better. We may say, “I deserve this treat because…”, but if we wouldn't give our kid this sugar filled treat, then why would we consume it ourselves? It may taste really good, but what's the long term effect? When am I going to crash from it, be bloated from it, be tired at my desk? Samm leaves us with tips on how to train our mindset from way's to have something sweet but have energy all day long, to tricks when dinning out. The food fuel is being mindful of what your eating, when your eating it and where it's coming from. And ask yourself, “how hungry am I?” Don't mistake hunger for dehydration, drink yo water! We conclude with the beauty vs. the negativity of social media, discussing how conversation are more beneficial than noise. We are in charge of our reactions, where will you choose to invest your emotions? If you want it, and you're willing to work hard at it, it's gonna happen. In the early days, Lauren studied Applied Science (Physical Education) at Uni and after a few years of being a Physical Education teacher, Lauren moved into Personal Training and Pilates instructing. Lauren’s career has continuously evolved. Lauren is passionate about training postnatal women who have experienced pregnancy loss and assist them on their fitness journey. It’s through blending personal and professional experience that Lauren has created ‘Tiny Ladder' and is here today to talk about her vision. “Tiny ladder is a interesting name for a business, particularly for a fitness business. It’s been in my visions for quite a number of years now and it’s through blending my professional experience and my personal experience that I had in 2009, I experienced a stillborn baby, my baby was forty weeks and two days gestation, when I found out my baby’s heartbeat had stopped and through that experience of stillbirth I felt my body had failed me, I felt like… I wanted to turn my back on my body. After awhile I became wanting to get back into my exercise regime, but ironically there was nowhere in the fitness industry I could turn, I didn’t fit into a regular mums and bubs class, I didn’t fit into a group training class as my post natal body had those consideration of that late pregnancy, so I developed Tiny Ladder by blending both my personal and my professional experience to create a safe space for women to meet, talk and train in a comfortable and safe environment following pregnancy loss with a postnatal exercise specialist.” http://tinyladder.com.au/lauren-hewes/ https://www.facebook.com/TinyLadder/ SUPPORT NETWORKS – Australian organisations Stillbirth Foundation https://stillbirthfoundation.org.au/ Stillaware https://stillaware.org/ Bears of hope http://www.bearsofhope.org.au/ Rednose https://rednose.org.au/ SANDS 1300 072 637 Become a Patron with Patreon- your monthly donation makes this podcast, my workout videos and blog possible. I have a deep Compassion and Love for God, Christ, the Holy Spirit as well as the Angelic realm... I respect all the original Saints and deciples who followed Christ and the Holy Mother who gave him birth. The Spiritual path explanied by Christ was referred to as "The Way of Life" and it offers a process of personal transformation that will awaken inspired and dedicated individuals to recognize their true identities, their oneness with the Divine, and their unique talents and abilities. I beleive Christ was more a "Spiritual" person then modern day Church wants us to ever know...
