In a world that often feels dominated by technology and constant change, it's easy to forget that some people are still living by the rhythms of ancient traditions. James Rebanks, an author and shepherd, is one of them, and in today's episode, he shares what following a way of life that has endured for thousands of years can teach us about modern life and the things that matter.James offers a glimpse at the often ignored and misunderstood world of pastoral life in England's Lake District, which isn't just about working with sheep and cattle but maintaining a deep connection to past generations, a commitment to community, and a sense of purpose. He takes us through the life of a fell shepherd, where the timeless values of hard work, seasonality, stewardship, and stillness still get lived out day to day.Resources Related to the PodcastJames' booksGrazing SchoolThe Poetics of Manhood by Michael HerzfeldBraiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall KimmererDying Breed article: 5 Things Farmers Have Taught Me About Work, Life, and LegacyWendell Berry's booksRegeneratist Allen WilliamsRegeneratist Greg JudyConnect With James RebanksJames on XJames on IGSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by highlighting the upcoming webinar on Thursday, hosted by Alex, which will cover the application process for those targeting the M7 MBA programs and feature admissions coaches from our friends at Leland. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/m7clearadmit Graham then noted the weekly refresh series that Clear Admit publishes during this time of year, which is designed to keep MBA applicants updated with admissions-related updates at the leading MBA programs. Graham also discussed a new admissions tip which focuses on all the standardized tests that non-English language MBA candidates might use to demonstrate English proficiency in the admissions process. We continue our series of Adcom Q&As, and this week we have two Q&As, from Harvard Business School's Rupal Gadhia and Maryland / Smith's Maria Pineda. Finally, Graham highlighted a recently published podcast that focuses on the strategy consulting industry and its importance for MBA candidates. This is a recording from a panel discussion from our spring event in Boston and includes a representative from Bain Consulting. For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate has a superb 795 on the GMAT, but a very modest GPA. We discussed the impact of this GPA on their overall profile. This week's second MBA candidate is from India and has not yet taken the GRE. They are targeting top MBA programs outside the United States. The final MBA candidate has a 745 GMAT and 3.95 GPA in chemical engineering. They work at a small firm, with no title change. We do think this is a very strong candidate. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!
Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present skeptical UFO researcher John Keeling, author of "LANDED! The Great British Flying Saucer Hoax & Other Extraterrestrial Spoofs." It asks some important questions: What would we do if aliens landed? Would we offer greetings? Would we panic? Or would we shoot to kill? In 1967, a maverick group of British students wanted to know. As apprentices at Farnborough's prestigious Royal Aircraft Establishment, they hatched an ingenious and audacious plot to test the authorities; landing multiple flying saucers across the width of England. Not only would "The Great Flying Saucer Hoax" challenge the Police, the Royal Air Force, the Army, and numerous government ministries, it also confronted Ufologists with the scenario they continuously prophesize (and claim to be prepared for). John's book also chronicles many other instances of extraterrestrial spoofing, to examine what such incidents might tell us about our hopes and fears of potential contact. After years of research, John does not embrace the extraterrestrial hypothesis for the phenomenon. John has written for The Fortean Times, and in addition to creating social media content for the East Anglian Astrophysical Research Organisation's proposed UK SETI project, is completing his next book. He lives on the Essex coast, close to his two daughters. Which is why we find him outside of the Earl of Oxford's rooms, negotiating with a private guard who is as thick as mince while a company of increasingly hot and sweaty actors wait in the yard, trying not to look at what Oxford, a.k.a. England India Daily, 5th Test, The Oval, Day 3: It was Yashasvi Jaiswal's day at The Oval, as India pressed home the advantage of a weakened and inexperienced England attack. What a knock from the opener. 50s from Akash Deep and Ravindra Jadeja, and late fireworks from Washington Sundar kept the foot on the throat of the weary hosts. And to top it off, a Mohammed Siraj yorker to castle Zak Crawley completed the visitor's superb day. How will England approach the chase with so much time? We all know the answer to that. On today's episode, we pick up right where yesterday's chapter left off - with Kit Marlowe cracked over the back of the head with a club and bundled into a pure black covered carriage. The person waiting within is cool and calm, despite the summer heat. Old, dying, yet phenomenally powerful, Sir Francis Walsingham is Queen Elizabeth's Secretary of State. Like a spider at the heart of a web, he has agents everywhere - but the one he has most pressing business with is the young playwright sat before him.Specifically, Walsingham has a mission for Kit to undertake. Although Walsingham's code name speaks of his true nature, for while Marlowe might be known as 'Ganymede,' the young boy lover of the God of Gods, Sir Francis is known as 'Janus' - the two-faced deity of both endings and beginnings...See you again tomorrow for Chapter 3!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. You're walking through a busy modern city—and then a towering Gothic church stops you in your tracks. That's exactly what happened to me in Bristol, when I stumbled upon St Mary Redcliffe, a church Queen Elizabeth I herself called “the fairest, goodliest and most famous parish church in England.” I'm Claire Ridgway, historian and author, and in this episode I share the story behind this incredible Tudor site—from Elizabeth's 1574 visit, to her letters patent for its restoration, to the royal grammar school she founded right next door. Did you know a statue of Elizabeth I from her lifetime still survives—inside this very church? Join me as I explore this hidden Tudor gem and reveal why it should be on every history lover's travel list. I also share a few other places to visit in Bristol, including the nearby cathedral and the fascinating M Shed museum. Well hello, hey, and hi there - we're currently at Black Shuck Festival in Suffolk doing a whole bunch of Three Ravens-related stuff, but, as it has been over a month since the end of Series 6, we thought that today, on Lammas Day, we might release this little update episode about what's been going on with us.To sweeten the deal, we have included excerpts from our two Patreon Exclusive episodes for July 2025, including a chunk of our discussion of 'The Books That Made Us' and the opening section of our Film Club episode, as released yesterday, about the wildly entertaining 1988 cult horror comedy movie 'The Lair of the White Worm.'While those things close the episode out, beforehand we have news about recent collaboration episodes made with some of our favourite podcasters, updates on our first sponsor - Three Spirit Drinks (use Offer Code THREERAVENS for 15% off any purchase!) and the rather momentous milestone we've literally just crossed - of half a million downloads! With lots of other bits of incidental chat, we know that for members of our Patreon community some of this isn't exactly new news, but nonetheless, if you have been chilling and not really following goings-on while episodes of our Lang Fairy Tales Project have been coming out then consider this a digest of what you might have missed. We really hope you enjoy it, and that you also enjoy Dog Days - we will have new chapters releasing every day on the main and Patreon podcast feeds throughout the month, so let's let 'Hot Dog Summer' off the leash and howl together at the Barley Moon! Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcastThree Ravens is a myth and folklore podcast hosted by Eleanor Conlon and Martin Vaux.In each Monday episode we explore a historic county, digging into heritage, folklore and traditions, then we tell a new version of a legend from that county. As long heralded, and under the influence of the Canis Dog Star, we warmly present the first installment of our Bonus Series project for August 2025!Set in 1589, Dog Days follows young English playwright, poet, spy and bounder Christopher 'Kit' Marlowe who, when we meet him, is fast asleep and drenched with sweat in his newly-acquired rooms in Norton Folgate, London.Yet, beneath the sweltering summer heat, Kit has quite a lot on his plate - including French Catholic agents trying to kill him, a new play script he owes to the Earl of Oxford, a secret mission he has been tasked with by Sir Francis Walsingham, his relationship with his new bedfellow, Barnaby Raynott, and then there's the matter of the strange girl who appears at his window bringing news that he really does not want to hear.Expect new chapters to release every day throughout the month containing swashbuckling action, esoteric lore, demonic hellhounds, lots of jokes, and kissing.See you again tomorrow for Chapter 2!Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. HAIR METAL Podcast EP.28. Part 2: Black Sabbath 'Back To The Beginning' Concert w/ Kaotica Studios Film Director: Johnny K. NOTE: This podcast was recorded 3 days before we learned of the passing of Ozzy Osbourne. Your Hair Metal Podcast hosts and guest are sadden and are mourning the death of Ozzy, our 'Prince of Darkness', who helped lead the way for all metal fans, and the next generation of metal fans to come. RIP Ozzy, thank you for contribution to our Metal fandom. On this special episode of the Hair Metal Podcast we discuss 'Black Sabbath: Back To The Beginning' Benefit Concert. Back to the Beginning was a benefit concert by the English rock band Black Sabbath, with a number of supporting artists. It took place on July 5th, 2025 at Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham, England, very near where the band was formed in 1968. The event concluded with the final live performances of both the band and lead singer Ozzy Osbourne; it also marked the first time since 2005 that the original line-up of the band (Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward) had performed together live. Osbourne, no longer able to walk due to advanced Parkinson's disease, sang while seated on a throne. The widely-lauded concert was streamed worldwide via pay per view with a broadcast delay. It featured an all-star lineup of supporting acts, including two supergroups of musicians serving as the house band. Proceeds from the event totaled £140 million, and will be donated to Acorns Children's Hospice, Birmingham Children's Hospital, and Cure Parkinson's. Black Sabbath is widely regarded as a foundational band for heavy metal, with their influence extending to various subgenres. Their impact is undeniable, shaping the sound and lyrical themes of countless bands across generations, from the 70s through to current day modern acts. Jacke continues his journey through the list of the 25 Greatest Books of All Time with a look at Flaubert's "perfect novel," Madame Bovary (1856-57). Telling the story of the bored wife of a provincial doctor who enters into a series of infidelities, Flaubert's debut caused an immediate sensation - and changed the way we've come to view both novels and novelists. In this episode, Jacke talks about the book and its impact; passes along three Madame Bovary tidbits from Mike Palindrome (who is currently slow-reading the novel as part of the Bluesky Together project); and revisits his experience with Madame Bovary in Tibet, which first ran in 2017. Special Announcement: The History of Literature Podcast Tour is happening in May 2026! Both Dan's stories seem to present exceptionally strong evidence for life after death. The first comes from the state of Illinois and is the exceptionally strange late 19th century tale of the Watseka Wonder. Then his second story takes us back to the early 18th century to Canterbury, England. Did famed English author Daniel Defoe write the first based-on-a-true story ghost encounter claim? Lynze begins the back half of the show with a creepy encounter with a shadowy figure inside of the mind of someone playing a game. Then, we are off to New Orleans where we hear about two fans strange stay in a French Quarter hotel. Monthly Patreon Donation: This months charitable donation is going to Ignite Adaptive Sports. Ignite Adaptive Sports mission is to provide snow sport opportunities to people with disabilities. They believe that everyone should be able to enjoy winter sports, regardless of skill or ability level. We are a volunteer based organization that provide snow sport lessons to athletes with disabilities out of Eldora Mountain Resort. In 2024, 320 volunteers gave 22,390 hours of their time to provide 1,690 snowsports lessons to 459 athletes. Ignite Adaptive Sports provides sit skiing lessons, cross country and snowshoe lessons, downhill skiing, snowboarding and ski biking lessons. They rely on grants, donations, an annual fundraising gala, and our host mountain Eldora to be able to provide this much needed service. Dan and Lynze had the pleasure of meeting Sam Brady who works with this great non profit. Sam shared with us that Ignite Adaptive Sports is run by almost all volunteers with only 2 paid staff members. They typically receive funding for disabled veterans to be able to receive lessons at no cost to them. However, this year, due to budget cuts in the DEI space, it's not looking good. Sam asked if we'd be interested in supporting this cause and supporting disabled people, especially disabled veterans. We sent $11,600 over to them and put another $1250 into the scholarship fund! Paleontologists have identified an ancient reptile with a towering crest made not of skin, or scales, or feathers, or antler—but something else entirely. It's some kind of integumentary outerwear we've never seen before. The small creature sporting the curious crest was named Mirasaura grauvogeli, and it lived during the Middle Triassic period, about 247 million years ago, just before dinosaurs evolved. Host Flora Lichtman talks to evolutionary biologist Richard Prum about this dramatic dorsal mystery and what it tells us about the evolution of dinosaurs, birds, and feathers. Plus, how fast did dinosaurs run? It turns out that the equation scientists have been using for five decades to estimate dinosaur speeds is not completely accurate. To understand what this could mean for velociraptor velocities, T. rex tempos, and spinosaurus speeds, Flora talks with paleobiologist Peter Falkingham.Guests: Dr. Richard Prum is a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and head curator of ornithology at the Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut.
