The “year of democracy” holds the potential to bring profound change to global politics, economic policy, and the investment environment. By the end of 2024, more than five dozen countries, accounting for nearly half of the world's population, will elect new leaders. Elections in Europe, including the UK, France, Germany and European Union, have already yielded both expected and surprising results. The US presidential election in November, as well as key congressional races, also could create significant policy changes—both expected and unexpected—during the next administration, no matter who wins the White House. For investors, the challenge lies in identifying the impact of elections on financial markets. How are 2024's elections going to change the investment outlook? This episode of The Outthinking Investor takes a closer look at elections around the world, the issues most important to voters, the challenges that political leaders face, and election season's potential short- and long-term implications for investors. Our guests are Jeanne Sheehan Zaino, professor of political science and international studies at Iona University and author of “American Democracy in Crisis”; Morris Fiorina, Wendt Family Professor at Stanford University and senior fellow at the Hoover Institution; and Taggart Davis, Vice President of Government Affairs at PGIM.

Embark on an emotional odyssey with Diane Marie Pisera as she recounts her voyage from the picturesque Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia to the bustling heartbeat of New York State. In her narratives of youthful summers spent in Calabria and the significant life shift of immigrating to America, Pisera's story is a vibrant canvas of nostalgia, love, and the enduring spirit of an immigrant's journey. Her recent engagement in the cobblestoned town of Tropea adds yet another heartfelt chapter to her tale, underscoring the profound connections that bind us to our places of origin. Our conversation then weaves through the entrepreneurial endeavors that define our collective heritage. I reflect on my own family's past, from my grandfather's American business success in the bridal wear industry. These narratives are not just personal recollections, but a testament to the entrepreneurial flame that flickers in the hearts of those with Italian roots. Diane's transition from candle making to marketing, and the inspiration behind her podcast "Passport to Thrive," further illustrate how a lineage of enterprise continues to shape our aspirations and actions today. Finally, we turn to the transformative magic of travel, urging our listeners to embark on their own paths of discovery, whether through the lens of a tourist or the ambition of a budding entrepreneur. We dissect the cultural threads that connect Italian Americans to their ancestry and muse over how traditions, such as hip hop, can fortify identities across generations. The episode culminates with the evocative experience of visiting the Vatican amidst the uncertainties of COVID-19, a poignant reminder of the complex world we navigate. Together with Diane, we invite you to join us in celebrating the intricate mosaic of Italian culture, entrepreneurship, and the unyielding quest for personal growth.Immigrating from Italy with her mom at nine years old has given Diane Marie the grit and resilience to start her own business to reshape generational legacies and create her own American Dream. Tobin Anderson is the Men's Basketball Head Coach at Iona University. He's in his first year there, and you may recognize Tobin and his name from last season when he was the Head Coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University in their Men's Basketball program. They shocked the world; they beat #1 Purdue in the NCAA Tournament, they actually won a game before that to enter the NCAA Tournament, and Tobin and his team became a Cinderella story, sort of the sweetheart of college basketball last year, having only been the second team to win as a 16 seed over a 1 seed. Tobin is a basketball lifer; his dad was a high school basketball coach, he's coached at every level (Division III, Division II, and now Division I). And we'll talk about the different levels of basketball in this conversation, and you're going to find him pretty transparent, genuine, authentic, while we also get into the politics and the political nature of basketball. We talk about pressing and his defensive philosophy and his style. If you're not into basketball, this conversation may be a little over your head, but if you're a hoops head like me, you're going to love Tobin's energy, his curiosity, his creativity, his willingness to try new things, his willingness to grow, to change, to evolve. He's highly competitive, he's highly enthusiastic and energetic. This conversation flowed for me, and I hope it will flow for you as well. Tobin had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “The backbone of our program has always been competition and competing” (5:35). “The most important thing is we compete on a daily basis” (5:50). “Let's not get caught up into so much teaching and X's and O's and that stuff, when at the end of the day if we're competitive, we have a chance to be very successful” (6:10). “Our worst practices are on the days when I overthink things as a coach and I try to do too much, try to teach too much” (6:40). “We improve every day” (7:20). “To have a chance to be very successful, you have to get better every day” (8:10). “When you're on a good team, you have to sacrifice for your teammates” (12:05). “The two things that really help you are shared success and shared suffering” (15:00). “Winning begets winning” (15:30). “The hard days, the tough days, the uneven days, those are the days you build a team” (16:35). “Sometimes the best you is the best us” (24:45). “Can you blend in to help us all be successful?” (27:55). “If you screw it up, then figure it out” (29:20). “The best practices to me are the sloppy ones, the crazy ones” (30:15). “I try to step back more now and let them screw up, let them make mistakes” (31:50). “Scared goes home” (33:40). “Even when you're the top dog, you're trying to create that underdog mentality” (38:00). “Belief is a moment-by-moment situation” (40:55). “I love what I do, so there's not a job component to it” (46:35). “You don't know what you don't know” (53:00). “It's about after the good things, after the bad things, not letting yourself react either way” (58:40). “We're not a big adjustments team. We want teams to adjust to us” (1:04:45). “The game in December is just as important as the game in February” (1:12:34). “I share everything. I'm not trying to hold anything back” (1:17:25). “It's not about what you do, it's about how you do it” (1:17:30). Additionally, you can follow Tobin on Twitter. Thank you so much to Tobin for coming on the podcast! I wrote a book called “Shift Your Mind” that was released in October of 2020, and you can order it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. On this episode of the show we welcome local runner, and also current full time student from Iona University in America, Lachlan Wellington. Lachlan is over here on holiday during his summer break, catching up with family and friends (and running). He runs in the NCAA division in the US for Iona and comes on to chat to us and tell us all about his experiences and racing and training there. Lachlan is a very humble runner but we did dig into some of his fantastic achievements, including a sub 30 minute 10k and running 14:12 in the 5k. Two very good achievements amongst many others. And as always Dave and I kick start the show for 20 minutes with a bit of running chat, and also Dave's new hobby baking sour dough bread. Do his skills and talents have no end? Thank you for listening and supporting the show everyone. As always, happy running to you all x

From August 12, 1966 through February 18, 1968, Thomas Merton and Rosemary Radford Ruether engaged in a vibrant exchange of nearly 40 letters. In this talk, Robinson builds on this existing exchange by placing passages from Merton's and Ruether's broader bodies of work into conversation. He specifically lifts up insights from Merton and Ruether that can aid us in imagining and incarnating sustainable lives, communities, and societies that are grounded in spirituality and committed to social justice. In the process, he considers the links between Merton's insights, Ruether's insights, and Pope Francis's promotion of an “integral ecology.” Jim Robinson is a member of the Religious Studies Department at Iona University, where he serves as Director of the Thomas Merton Contemplative Initiative and Associate Director of the Deignan Institute for Earth and Spirit. He received his PhD in Theology from Fordham University, his MTS from Harvard Divinity School, and his BA from Drew University. He is a recent ITMS Shannon Fellow and a GreenFaith Fellow. He is actively involved in a number of lay Catholic communities committed to embodying spirituality, ecology, and social justice, including Agape Community in Hardwick, MA, and Benincasa Community in Guilford, CT.

Moshe Ratson was born and raised in Israel but always wanted to be in New York. In this podcast, Moshe discusses his academic and professional journey which eventually led him to become an innovative and well-known psychotherapist, business consultant, and executive coach in New York. He recalls what made him gravitate toward psychology and admits that learning about all of the available psychology programs, schools, degrees, and career paths was “pretty confusing” but explains that once he knew he wanted to have a private practice in marriage and family therapy, the choices became clear to him. Moshe earned his Bachelor of Science in Marketing and International Trade, his Master in Business Administration, and his Master of Science in Marriage and Family Therapy/Psychotherapy all within New York. He then became a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and clinical member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). His experience serving as a Vice President of Sales at a Fortune 500 Company along with his experience in marketing, business, coaching and consulting led him to start his own practice. Today, Moshe is the Founder and Executive Director of spiral2grow Marriage and Family Therapy in New York and has an anger management book called “Anger Is Your Compass.” During our discussion, Moshe shares what colleges in New York for psychology and therapy he attended and why he chose them. He also discusses some of the requirements associated with becoming a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) in New York including how many clinical hours were needed back in 2006 when he received his license. He discusses some of the philosophies and methodologies used in the field of psychology and which ones he uses in his practice. Finally, he talks about his practice, spiral2grow Marriage and Family Therapy, and how it has evolved through the years and how it is different from other psychological practices. Around the 32-minute mark in the podcast, Moshe offers specific advice for those wanting to start their own business or their own practice. One aspect of his practice focuses on sports psychology, and he admits that his experience as a professional basketball player helps him connect with his clients especially while working with NBA players, NFL players, and Olympians. Moshe was also a basketball coach, a secret service expert, and served in the army as a military officer.
