On the 27th and 28th of November, Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence invited MTD magazine to the official opening of its new Experience Centre in Holland. Located at the Brainport Industries Campus in the Northwest of Eindhoven, the two-day event was an opportunity to tour the new campus and participate in insightful presentations that demonstrated how Hexagon is driving innovation and, as a result, developing successful industrial partnerships. Eindhoven is responsible for the Philishave, the automatic gearbox, the cassette tape and the compact disc. To foster this culture of innovation for future generations, the Dutch government funded the Brainport Industries Campus, which broke ground in 2017. At around 100,000sq/m, the innovation centre is virtually fully subscribed, and that is why construction of a 225,000sq/m phase two on the 17-hectare site will commence this year. With dozens of high-tech businesses collaborating at the campus, Hexagon is alongside cutting-edge companies with brands like Siemens and Meta (Facebook), just a few located at the facility. MTD magazine attended and the itinerary for the innovation extravaganza promised an exciting lineup. The event started with a welcome from Jan Klingen, Vice President EMEA North, and Eric Veurink, Brainport Industries Campus Director, and a facility tour. As expected with a Hexagon LIVE event, the breadth and depth of technology and insights were so expansive that delegates could choose the most relevant content for their business. Exemplifying this was one of the first panel discussions on the ‘Future of Mobility in Aerospace and Automotive', hosted by Hexagon Senior Director for Industry Solutions, Johannes Mann, who was joined by speakers Rob van Loon, Additive Manufacturing Manager at KMWE and Thom Grobben, the Vice President of the Technology Hub at KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. The discussion flowed through the challenges of accelerating innovation and agility in the automotive sector to deliver the next generation of smart, connected vehicles. This conversation then moved on to the aerospace industry's challenges in redefining aircraft architecture and propulsion systems to become more sustainable. Other prominent seminars discussed ‘The challenges in production and collaboration', ‘Extending asset lifecycles and improving productivity with HxGN EAM', ‘Surfing the future now' and ‘Innovation beyond silos: Transforming Manufacturing through connectivity, collaboration, and Cloud/AI'. There was a lot more on show, with panel discussions, presentations, workshops and roundtable debates encompassing every industry sector. Nowhere was this more prominent than in Morgan Maia's presentation, the Partnership Manager at Oracle Red Bull Racing. Hexagon has partnered with the F1 team since its inception. Flying in from the F1 Teams' weekend win in Las Vegas, Morgan discussed how Hexagon supports the team in streamlining performance by ensuring compliance with FIA regulations, precision manufacturing, and ensuring the team ‘gets it right first time'. More than just a soundbite, Mike Hughes, Head of Quality Assurance and Manufacturing Engineering at Oracle Red Bull Racing, qualified the support of Hexagon with a statement: “With Hexagon's help, we've managed to reduce our faults by 50% over the last two years.” Morgan's presentation alluded to how Hexagon is involved throughout the process chain, from 3D CAD modelling and CFD simulations in the virtual wind tunnel to simulation and physical wind tunnel testing. With over one million components handled throughout the season, Oracle Red Bull Racing combines exceptional hardware with efficient software and digital twins to deliver rapid inspection rates. The team has four QA departments encompassing mechanical, external, composites, and race support. They all utilise Hexagon tools, from CAM software to 3D scanners, laser trackers, portable measuring arms and CMMs. The Leica AT960 scanner is a core element of the trackside equipment that improves accuracy and holistic measurement. Its custom orientation enables measurement from different perspectives. For legality checks, Oracle Red Bull Racing uses the AS1 scanner to scan the floor, front, and rear wings to extract key points of the car for performance set-up. With the arrival of Red Bull's first road car, the RB17, and the opening of its 5,000sq/ft powertrain manufacturing site in Milton Keynes, Red Bull's number of components produced is set to expand significantly, as will its relationship with Hexagon. The F1 car continually undergoes design cycles that follow the same structured path. With up to 100 projects in-cycle at any time, around 1,000 design cycles are completed yearly. It starts with developing a 3D CAD model and the subsequent digital twin, which is the foundation block for everything that comes after. With CFD, prototypes and a whole raft of processes before the team gets to a finished car, Morgan said: “When you work on a car in the factory and then take it to the track, if there is an issue in manufacturing – it's too late to do anything about it. We must be sure the car is 100% correct before shipping it. That is why we need Hexagon: to ensure that everything leaving the factory is perfect for when it arrives at the track. We have thousands of parts that need to fit together perfectly. We work to the micron. It's precision you would see in a high-end watch – but not typically in a 5m long vehicle.” A presentation on Hexagon's Nexus suite by Stephen Graham, Executive Vice President and GM of Nexus at Hexagon, followed this. Stephen explained: “Nexus is our cloud-based manufacturing platform. We initially conceived it to solve an internal problem. We have acquired over 150 companies in more than 25 years, which has helped us build this portfolio of technologies throughout the product life-cycle. Our challenge is a large portfolio of technology solutions that were never really intended to work together. We wanted to offer our customers a solution to join the dots and bring the next level of value with the technologies all being under one roof. Nexus was conceived to solve this problem of connectivity. As soon as we took the proposition to our customers, we found they had the same problem. Over decades, they had purchased different technologies to solve different problems.” “Nexus directly solves that problem, and what we have found in the last few months is an ability to connect to different technologies from different vendors - it doesn't just have to be Hexagon products. Since starting development, we have found that businesses are structured very hierarchically, with different disciplines arranged in different silos. The whole thing is very process-driven, and as we try to push the boundaries of manufacturing, this becomes a barrier to succeeding. The need to drive collaboration horizontally across an organisation is coming to the fore as a challenge that needs to be faced.” To demonstrate this, Stephen provided a slide show showing a reverse-engineered workflow using 10 products from Hexagon that facilitate different elements of a product's lifecycle. The demonstration alluded to new cloud-native apps, technologies and solutions connected to products in the portfolio for decades, such as PC-DMIS. Nexus creates an end-to-end solution that connects the dots. Stephen added: “Once these collaborative workflows have been strung together, engineers can work collaboratively. This provides the opportunity to bring automated and AI technologies into the workflow as automated collaborators in the workflow. A great example of this is ProPlanAI, which we just launched. This large NAPA language model provides precise engineering answers for CAM engineers who may be programming CNC machines. It automatically collates data and generates a G-Code to drive machines on the shop floor. This gives engineers superpowers to drive productivity to the next level.” Hexagon claims that ProPlan AI cuts the time to program machine tools by 75%. The new AI technology enables machine shops to achieve operational excellence at scale, powered by Microsoft Azure services built into Hexagon's cloud-based Nexus connectivity platform. Available in Q1 2025, ProPlanAI will ‘learn' from the data created by a company's CAM programmers. This will enable manufacturers to automatically explore existing programming information to predict ideal outcomes tailored to a company's preferences, production capabilities, and needs. ProPlanAI will continuously learn and adapt, ensuring programs are as efficient and productive as possible. ProPlanAI can be trained with a company's institutional knowledge to ensure machines can be quickly and efficiently programmed to their quality standards. Additionally, a Hexagon Copilot provides suggested pathways to advise on best practices without leaving their CAM software. The innovation has been developed in collaboration with Microsoft, and Ygal Levy, the EMEA Manufacturing Managing Director at Microsoft, discussed the company's strategic partnership with Hexagon in greater detail during an afternoon presentation on the ‘Transformation of manufacturing through Connectivity, Collaboration and Cloud/AI'. Clare Barclay, President of Enterprise and Industry at Microsoft EMEA, said: “Microsoft's collaboration with Hexagon is driven by a shared belief that we can transform manufacturing productivity. It's rewarding for us to see how the AI capabilities provided by Azure are empowering CNC programmers with productivity-boosting automation while helping new users upskill faster. This is exactly the sort of transformation AI can bring to the industry, and we are excited to see Hexagon apply its manufacturing expertise to transform workplace productivity.” Verifying the Solution Just over a year ago, MTD magazine visited RODIN Machining. A few miles north of Amsterdam, the start-up company set out to develop an autonomous factory. Incorporating FASTEMS automation, robot-loaded Mazak machines, and integrated innovations that made the mind boggle, RODIN has been a beta-test customer, putting ProPlanAI through its paces before market introduction. Paul Mooij, Director of Digital at RODIN Machining, said: “Machine tool programming is complicated to automate and requires experience. ProPlanAI is exciting because we can leverage our human capital for greater machine utilisation. Our team can program machines in a fraction of the time by applying their valued skills in supervising ProPlanAI suggestions and finalising the programme specifics.”  Paul added: “We have built an autonomous factory but are limited by the engineering input we can put into it. This boils down to a race for talent, and we all know it isn't easy to get good people. We have been working with Hexagon on the development of ProPlanAI, looking at how can we fill it with our data and train it with our models, our machines, tools and our way of working - providing a suggestion of how the model thinks our way of working should be. We can then position our engineer to supervise and undertake ‘prompt engineering'. ProPlanAI is very powerful and provides the right context for the features, model, machines, and tooling available. Using the given context, it then decides, ‘I think you should use these processes for this machining operation''.” “This has become powerful, and we are progressing rapidly to make big savings. We are leveraging our human capital to achieve more by using AI to provide suggestions. Then, our engineers decide whether to accept the suggestion and proceed or refine the process. For example, we may have a 2D PDF drawing that needs to meet specific tolerances, and ProPlanAI may not know this – and this is the experience we can add to the system. It's been a fantastic collaboration, and the system continually evolves.” Discussing the current situation, Paul told MTD magazine: “Our engineers will consider how they approach a job and create the CAM file in Esprit. We then feed our models to our developers. Over the last 18 months, we have been feeding the data to ProPlan AI, which uses our approach, machining strategies, cutting tools, machines, characteristics and experience. ProPlan AI creates suggestions for the next job and pre-populates our program, so our engineers are validating and refining the suggestions to meet our specifications. It amplifies the output of our staff.” “For example, if we have an aluminium job that needs a threaded hole with a chamfer, we would have a unique way of doing that with our machines and tools in our CAM files. Based on those patterns, the model learns our strategies and recognises the parameters for a threaded hole in aluminium, the feeds, speeds and so on.” Looking at benefits during testing, Paul adds: “It is amplifying our output and boosting our efficiency. At present, the savings are impressive. We continuously add data to our ProPlanAI suite, so the savings will cascade into ever greater efficiencies as we progress.”

Learn more about your ad choices. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Adopts Matterport Digital Twins to Transform Ground Operations and Engage Passengers World's longest running airline uses library of Matterport digital twins to improve operating efficiencies SUNNYVALE, California, Tuesday, April 26, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Matterport, Inc. (Nasdaq: MTTR), the leading spatial data company driving the digital transformation of the built world, today announced that KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (“KLM”), part of the Air France-KLM Group and a member of the SkyTeam airline alliance with services across 90 European cities and 70 intercontinental destinations, has adopted Matterport to create a digital twin of each type of aircraft in the fleet. KLM is using Matterport to train ground crews and to provide an immersive virtual experience for customers. The global air carrier has received nearly 1 million views of its digital twins from ground crews, flight attendants, pilots, and travelers. “Matterport digital twins have permanently changed the way we train our employees and we have expanded our use of them over time for customer engagement,” said Chris Koomen, Virtual Reality Specialist at KLM. “Digital twins are now integral to our business. We regularly use them for training across our global operations. Cleaning crews work more efficiently, flight attendants learn the layout of an aircraft ahead of time, and pilots reference digital twins during safety checks. With remote access to digital twins, trainees avoid disrupting the maintenance work of an aircraft, enabling our fleet to return to service faster. All of this adds up to performance efficiency.” KLM began using Matterport in 2017, capturing the first digital twin of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner to train ground crews on cleaning the aircraft. When crews reduced cleaning time by 30 percent, KLM recognized the potential of Matterport digital twins to streamline training for other departments and utilized Matterport to further capture digital twins of its entire fleet. Today, KLM manages a library of 104 digital twins that have been viewed nearly 1 million times, including multiple versions for each of the 14 types of Boeing, Airbus, and Embraer aircrafts that make up its fleet. Flight attendants utilized Matterport's digital twins to learn where important safety and hospitality items are located such as beverage carts, while an annotated digital twin for ground crews illustrates where service trolleys are stowed. Meanwhile, pilots easily refer to an aircraft's digital twin during a pre-flight safety check if an issue is detected. Equipped with Matterport digital twins, KLM employees do not need to travel to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol for training and instead use immersive digital twins. Since virtual trainees no longer interrupt the maintenance work of an aircraft with in-person visits, it helps to get the aircraft to return to service faster and with less downtime. In addition, KLM's digital twins have helped streamline its fleet management. For example, when upgrading the Wi-Fi routers used on a specific aircraft, KLM used the highly accurate data within a digital twin to confirm measurements and optimize the placement of new routers. --- Matterport media release continues in the We Get Around Network Forum (www.WGANForum.com). --- Source: Matterport via Globe Newswire

Topic: Airlines targeting post-pandemic ‘revenge travel'   The blow caused to the airline industry by the COVID-19 pandemic has been especially felt by budget airlines, which mostly operate narrow-bodied passenger jets and have therefore been unable to develop a sideline in air freight during the pandemic. According to one academic's analysis, when the outbreak stabilizes, businesses are targeting a trend in so-called “revenge travel.” However, she also hopes that, rather than the pre-pandemic price wars between budget airlines, the consolidation that has taken place during the pandemic will restore healthy competition in the industry. According to associate professor Melody Dai of National Cheng Kung University's Department of Transportation and Communication Management Science, costs per flight have not changed during the pandemic, but if carriers are required to implement social-distancing seating plans, leaving empty seats between passengers, this would eat into airlines' profit margins, causing a fresh headache for the industry. Dai says she hopes that budget airlines will manage to survive, since they help stimulate Taiwan's domestic tourism sector as well as the wider economy. Dai says that choosing to operate flights during the pandemic is a test of airlines' ability to sustain losses, but the crisis may also prove to be a turnaround for the industry. Dai says there are many variables to the pandemic. She says that once the outbreak stabilizes, if the demand for “revenge travel” exceeds supply, this could resolve the pre-pandemic situation of supply exceeding demand, which led to price wars among budget airlines. The consolidation that the pandemic has triggered within the airline industry could bring about a return to healthy competition, says Dai. One industry insider stated that, despite the lockdowns and reduced number of travelers and flights during the pandemic, the industry is bullish about post-pandemic prospects for both freight and passenger travel in the flourishing Asian region. The insider added that a trend in “revenge travel” could cause short-haul routes to become particularly busy. Source article: https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/lang/archives/2021/09/12/2003764205   Next Article   Topic: Rebranding is beneficial to China Airlines. Taiwan's Legislative Yuan voted on Wednesday to work towards renaming China Airlines, one of the national air carriers. Such a proposal immediately prompted various questions: Would doing so be prohibitively expensive? Would the airline lose aviation rights as a result of the act? The airline industry is unimaginably complex, so there is no definite answer to such a nuanced topic. While the issue of renaming Taiwan's national airline is inherently controversial, let us move away from political polarization and analyze what is best for China Airlines, from a business perspective. Firstly, if China Airlines were to rebrand itself to reflect a more Taiwanese identity, it is undeniable that the airline would incur costs. This is because airlines logos appear everywhere: from check-in counters, lounges, to even the napkins passengers use onboard. So yes, it would be a significant investment for China Airlines to repaint their planes to rebrand across their network. However, an airline's profitability is as much determined by revenue than it is affected by costs. In the long term, if an airline is able to attract more customers than now, such rebranding efforts would pay off. Rebranding China Airlines could address previous issues. For example, many people in English-speaking countries believe the word “China” has negative connotations, and they don't associate the airline with Taiwan when they hear about “China” Airlines. In addition, China Airlines is often confused with Air China, which is owned by the Chinese government. In recent years, safety and service incidents associated with Air China have damaged the Taiwanese airline's reputation, as the majority of the world simply cannot tell the two carriers apart, largely due to the confusing naming. On the other hand, CAL's main competitor, EVA Air, is well known as a Taiwanese company offering high standards of flight safety and service. If China Airlines can change a name that has made marketing difficult in the past, the benefits of rebranding could outweigh the potential costs. The second area of concern from China Airlines' perspective would be aviation rights, which grants airlines the privilege to enter, fly over, or land in another country's airspace. Such rights, critical to any airline's operations, are as a result of decades of negotiations between airline companies and regulatory agencies. Some have indicated the possibility of China Airlines losing these rights because of a name change, but it is important to understand that rebranding does not have to include changing the legal name. Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij。 For instance, the major European airline based in Amsterdam is branded as KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, but the three letters KLM stand for its registered legal name, Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij. In a similar fashion, China Airlines could perhaps rebrand as “CAL Formosa Airlines,” while retaining its formal name, to avoid compromising its aviation rights. Finally, while airlines tend to stay out of politics, companies such as China Airlines also have to consider its ability to continue flying into existing markets, particularly China. Critics of the idea to rename China Airlines have voiced concerns about angering the Communist Party in Beijing, and have speculated that the Chinese government would ban CAL from flying into Chinese airspace. While such a situation would indeed be unfavorable, and the possibility of occurrence cannot be ruled out, CAL could minimize risk by choosing a more politically neutral name. For example, by utilizing words such as “Formosa” or “Taipei”, the airline could stay out of the Taiwan-China debate and continue serving its existing passengers with minimal controversy. At the end of the day, even without changing China Airlines' name to “Taiwan Airlines”, the company can respond to the voices of the people by removing “China” from its name and avoid confusion and controversy altogether. Something Worth Considering

According to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, they believe actions speak louder than tweets. I don't know the context for their mentioning this, but I definitely agree. How about you? I will leave you to your own speculation about who or what comes to mind when the subject of tweets comes up. I only caution you to avoid conflating tweeting with doing, tweeting with thoughtful discourse, tweeting with reality. Although tweets and tweeting are fairly recent innovations, the idea of communicating through compact pronouncements is not. Let's try a few examples that would have worked quite well as tweets, had the option been available at the time. I have picked out examples that may have best been directed to today's most prolific tweeters. May I suggest that you focus on a specific tweeter, if one comes to mind. That will help when considering the fit between tweets and action, as KLM suggested. #JohnLocke “I have always thought the actions of men the best interpreters of their thoughts.” #BenjaminFranklin “Well done is better than well said.” #AlfredAdler “Trust only movement. Life happens at the level of events, not of words. Trust movement.” #HenryJKaiser “If your work speaks for itself, don't interrupt.” #AndrewCarnegie “As I grow older I pay less attention to what men say. I just watch what they do.” #LewisCass “People may doubt what you say, but they will believe what you do.” And of course, a good tweet session would hardly be complete without some old wisdom that comes from #Me “When all is said and done, don't turn out to be the one for whom much is said but little is done.; for if your action can't speak for its self, more tweets won't do much to make your case.”

This is Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. Here is the news. President Xi Jinping's wife Peng Liyuan says people from all walks of life should do more to support children orphaned by HIV and AIDS. Peng made the remarks at an opening ceremony for the 2016 summer camp for Chinese and African children. The event, entitled "Love in the Sunshine", has been held at the Palace Museum in Beijing. Peng is the World Health Organization goodwill ambassador for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. Peng said that despite their nationality or race, children orphaned by AIDS are the future of the world. It is the common responsibility of society to love and care for children orphaned by HIV and AIDS, so that they can grow up soundly and happily. The event was a part of the follow-up actions of a China-Africa anti-AIDS advocacy campaign launched last year by Peng and the Organization of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS. The summer camp is sponsored by the Chinese Association of STD and AIDS Prevention and Control, and is the 7th in a row since the camp began in 2010. Fifty-seven children orphaned by AIDS from China, South Africa, Ghana and Zimbabwe attended this year's summer camp. This is Special English. With its open culture and growing economy, China is becoming a popular destination for higher education seekers in Australia. According to a report by The Sydney Morning Herald on Sunday, there are 5,000 Australians studying in Chinese universities, up by 83 percent compared with the figure in 2011. The report said the number of Australian students studying in China has kept growing in recent years, attributing the change to China's open society and healthy economy. A Chinese education expert was quoted as saying that local Chinese companies are rising and they are becoming more and more competitive. Other factors have also contributed, including economic growth, a more service-orientated economy, and a more technologically-focused economy. Though the number of Australian students in China is increasing, it pales comparing with that of Chinese students heading to Australia and non-Australian international students in China. According to the Chinese Education Ministry, Chinese universities have an enrolment of almost 200,000 international students last year, surging 12 percent from a year earlier. Last year, students from South Korea, the United States and Thailand ranked the three biggest groups in China, while Beijing, Shanghai and Zhejiang province in eastern China are the top three destinations of foreign students. China now has 2,800 higher educational institutions, the second biggest number in the world. Aiming to attract up to 500,000 foreign students in 2020, China has kept increasing its educational input in recent years. You're listening to Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. China is planning to build its first domestically produced polar icebreaker. The Shanghai-based Jiangnan Shipyard has made the announcement, saying construction will start by the end of this year. China's current largest polar icebreaker, the "Xuelong", or Snow Dragon, was bought from the Ukrainian in 1993. China refitted it into a polar research vessel at a cost of 31 million yuan, almost 5 million U.S. dollars. The icebreaker was put into service the following year. So far, it has completed 32 expeditions in Antarctica and is now on its 7th Arctic expedition. The new home produced vessel will be 120 meters long which is smaller than the "Xuelong", but with stronger icebreaking power. The "Xuelong" can work non-stop, breaking 1-meter thick ice at a sailing speed of 2 knots; while the new vessel is designed to break 1-and-a-half-meter thick ice at a sailing speed of 3 knots. This is Special English. China will expand international exchange in the training of astronauts in a bid to push it closer to becoming a space power. The Astronaut Center of China made the announcement recently while briefing an international training mission for astronauts. Chinese astronaut Ye Guangfu participated in the mission. Ye is the first Chinese citizen to receive "CAVES" training organized by the European Space Agency. "CAVES" is short for Cooperative Adventure for Valuing and Exercising human behavior and performance Skills. It is an advanced training course for astronauts. The training took place in underground caves in Sardinia in Italy. Prospective astronauts from Japan, Russia, Spain and the United States also took part in the training. The Astronaut Center of China says that in the future, China will strengthen international communication in astronaut training while also relying on its own efforts. It is not known whether further Chinese astronauts will be selected for CAVES training. China is considering the possibility of starting its own CAVES program, and had examined several potential sites. Ye and five others spent several days underground from July 1-7, simulating a mission exploring another planet. CAVES training puts them in environments that simulate spaceflight, as well as improving leadership, teamwork, decision-making and problem-solving skills. This is Special English. Relocation of two top Chinese airlines to a new airport in Beijing will help cut airfares for international passengers. The move will also improve services for national flagship carrier Air China, which will remain at Beijing Capital International Airport. China Eastern and China Southern Airlines, along with some other SkyTeam Alliance members, will move to Beijing's new international airport when it begins operation in 2019. Other carriers to be relocated will include Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Korean Air. National carrier Air China and other Star Alliance partners, including United Airlines, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines and Japanese airline ANA, will stay. Slot shortages at Beijing Capital International Airport have made it increasingly difficult for airlines to add flights and launch new routes. The ultra-large new airport will be in Daxing district in Beijing's southeastern suburbs. It is expected to serve those who travel to and from Beijing and its neighbors Tianjin and Hebei province. As the southern part of Beijing further develops, with more businesses and government agencies moving there, passengers will find it increasingly convenient to use the new airport. Since the new airport will be almost 50 kilometers from the downtown area, airline companies based there will likely offer cheaper ticket prices to attract passengers and tour groups. If you have any comments or suggestions, please let us know by e-mailing us at mansuyingyu@cri.com.cn. That's mansuyingyu@cri.com.cn. Now the news continues. China will spend 36 million yuan, roughly 5 million US dollars, on geological disaster surveys in northwestern China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Starting in July, the fund will be allocated over three years to launch systematic surveys in two counties in the northern part of Kunlun Mountain, which is susceptible to frequent earthquakes. The surveys will focus on disaster risk levels and monitoring to help locals improve their ability of pre-warning and damage prevention. Satellites and drones will be used to collect data and monitor disasters in the area, while locals will attend training sessions on prevention. Xinjiang has complex weather and natural conditions, with 1 million square km, or 64 percent of the region's area, prone to geological disasters. A massive landslide killed 35 people in a village and forced the relocation of 200 others last month. This is Special English. Beijing's green industries could be worth 250 billion yuan, roughly 38 billion U.S. dollars, by 2020, particularly those focused on recycling and waste treatment. By the end of 2020, Beijing intends to employ some new technology including wastewater management and plastic recycling. A municipal official said recently that Beijing has laid out a plan to develop cutting-edge technology for environmental protection, including garbage processing and fuel control in some industries. According to Beijing's Action Plan on Technological Innovation, by next year, 20 major innovation projects will be carried out, some of which will improve the quality of the water discharged from wastewater recycling plants. One such project is an underground network that will benefit around 11 million residents in central China. Other projects have helped make it easier for local residents around Beijing to recycle household items including plastic bottles, electronic waste and clothes. Automatic recycling machines for plastic bottles were introduced in Beijing in 2012, allowing users to process used bottles and get paid directly through their smartphones. You're listening to Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. More than half of Chinese children aged six months or younger are purely breastfed. The National Health and Family Planning Commission made the announcement to mark the 2016 World Breastfeeding Week last week. The breastfeeding rate for newborns under six months was 59 percent in 2013, a surge from 28 percent in 2008. The commission will formulate guidelines to standardize breastfeeding rooms in public places. It encourages public and private entities to set up such facilities in workplaces and public venues, to address the problem of insufficient and substandard breastfeeding sites in the country. This is Special English.
