Amidst the fast pace of life, this episode dives into the transformative power of small yet profound actions. Guest Michael O'Brien shares his inspiring journey from a near-fatal cycling accident to becoming a beacon of resilience, mindfulness, and intentional living. His framework, GRACE—Gratitude, Reflection, Awareness, Community, and Energy—emphasizes the importance of reframing adversity, finding gratitude in the present, and using breath as a tool to navigate life's challenges. Highlighting the ripple effect of kindness and connection, Michael demonstrates how embracing moments of pause can lead to deeper self-awareness, better relationships, and a life aligned with purpose. With practical insights and heartfelt anecdotes, this conversation motivates listeners to slow down, breathe, and focus on what truly matters. Key Takeaways How the GRACE framework serves as a practical tool for navigating challenges and fostering a mindset shift. The concept of "Pause, Breathe, Reflect" interrupts reactive behavior, allowing for thoughtful responses in moments of stress. How reframing traumatic experiences can shift the narrative from "happening to me" to "happening for me," fostering personal growth. Building a strong community or “peloton” of support for recovery and resilience. Utilizing breathing techniques, such as box breathing, as simple yet effective methods for grounding oneself in high-stress situations.   About the Guest:  Breathe in…Breathe out… It's time to Pause, Breathe, and Reflect with Michael O'Brien. Michael is like a reactive mind circuit breaker who helps leaders prevent a bad moment from turning into a bad day so they can perform at a higher level. He's a survivor of a horrific near-death cycling accident called his Last Bad Day and years in the corporate executive suite, and in 2022, he used the power of mindfulness, grit, resilience and his peloton to ride his bike across America. www.michaelobrienshift.com    Connect with Dr. Michelle and Bayleigh at: https://smallchangesbigshifts.com hello@smallchangesbigshifts.com https://www.linkedin.com/company/smallchangesbigshifts https://www.facebook.com/SmallChangesBigShifts https://www.instagram.com/smallchangesbigshiftsco   Thanks for listening! Make no mistake. There's a lot you can't control about your retirement. The economy. The markets. That neighbor. But there is something you can control that will make a big difference in your quality of life. Your mindset. Michael O'Brien shares his compelling story and how he learned how to prevent bad moments from turning into bad days. Michael O'Brien joins us from the Garden State of New Jersey. _______________________ Bio Michael O'Brien is President and Founder of Peloton Coaching and Consulting. As a certified executive coach, he has advised, motivated, and inspired Fortune 500 executives, entrepreneurs, and other difference-makers at organizations like Brother International and Johnson and Johnson. He also serves as a mentor and volunteer with organizations that promote professional growth, such as the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association and James Madison University's College of Business. Before starting Peloton Coaching and Consulting, he was a healthcare sales and marketing executive and received his marketing degree from James Madison University. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and two daughters. Michael is the author of two books, his inspiring memoir: Shift: Creating Better Tomorrows: Winning at Work and in Life and the companion work, My Last Bad Day Shift: How to Prevent Bad Moments from Turning into Bad Days: a practical and powerful guide to lead a life free of bad days. ________________________ For More on Michael O'Brien Shift: Creating Better Tomorrows: Winning at Work and in Life My Last Bad Day Shift: How to Prevent Bad Moments from Turning into Bad Days Website ________________________ Podcast Episodes You May Like Self-Compassion – Dr. Kristin Neff The Mindful Body – Ellen Langer Living Like You Mean It – Jodi Wellman Taking Stock – Dr. Jordan Grumet _______________________ Wise Quotes On His Last Bad Day "But as I went through my recovery, I tried to put up this good front, like, Okay, we're going to make it. But I wasn't believing any of my hype. A mentor came to me and said, Hey, listen, everything in your life is neutral until you label it. You get to look at this any way you want to. And so then I started to realize, Okay, well, we're all living moments. Every day is filled with a whole bunch of moments. And if I have people in my life who I love and love me back, then I can't call a full day a bad one. That's why I came back to call my, that accident day, my last bad day. I've had definitely bad moments since then, but I still have a lot of love in my life. So I can't call a full day a bad one. But I also knew this, that I had to find a way to ground myself because my recovery felt so overwhelming. I had to figure out, much like in sports, how to slow the game down. Everything was just coming at me, much like life today. And I just knew I had to slow things down a bit to create some space so I could be thoughtful and intentional about how I wanted to go forward." On Who You Surround Yourself With "I think it's very important to surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you. And I think this is a big thing because for a lot of us men, especially as we think about retirement, a lot of our relationships are work relationships that we think those guys are our friends, but they're really our colleagues. And some of them are friends, and they'll stay friends for a while. And I think it's very important to surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you. But it's a minority of the relationships we have, maybe on one hand or both hands. So as we go into this next phase of our lives, into retirement, men or women, it's good to have people around you who can bring out the best in you, to help maybe clarify things when you get stuck or challenge you so you can be the best you can be - or to be there in celebration or to be there for a crisis or some type of comfort.

Michael had been checking the boxes of life.  He went to college, got a good job and got married, and had two beautiful children.  But then his script got a rewrite.  On July, 11, 2001, Michael was hit head-on by an SUV traveling at 40 mph while he was out training on his bike.  That became his Last Bad Day. Miraculously, he survived, but the long road to recovery wasn't without difficulties.  He was told "that all events in our lives are neutral until we label them."  Maybe his accident didn't happen to him, but for him.  Not long after, he began to change his perspective and mindset, started a daily mindfulness practice called Pause Breathe Reflect, and changed his life.https://instagram.com/pausebreathereflect?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Michael O'Brien had one of those life-changing, near catastrophic events in 2001. He was struck by a car while riding his bike, resulting in multiple, possibly lethal, serious injuries. The doctors' prognoses for how his future life would look were grim. Obviously, he had the option of accepting these and leading a life just scraping by. One of the revelations that someone provided him was that he could choose his own labels, in other words, what attitude do you want to have toward hardships? Michael decided that the day of his accident would be his last bad day. Challenges are simply moments, not chronic conditions if you believe you can overcome them and opportunities to move forward. His rehab was tedious, but his mantra was that working hard today would create a better tomorrow. Boy does this surgery rehab veteran relate to that! Michael also gained a lot of insight into meditation and mindfulness and began leading sessions. The pandemic spurred him to leave his corporate life and devote himself to introducing more people to these hugely beneficial practices. Many people don't have the time for long meditation sessions, so he created Pause Breathe Reflect, which includes an app that offers easy-to-access meditations, some as brief as one minute. Nice and convenient. Pausebreathereflect.com has a Web site on which I've enjoyed many of his blog articles. Last year, Michael pedaled across the country on a recent knee replacement, and this episode also includes some of his interesting data collection on milkshakes in every state!Michael O'Brienpausebreathreflect.comhello@pausebreathereflect.comFacebook Pause Breathe and ReflectInstagram and LinkedIn @pausebreathereflectBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

On a summer morning in 2001, today's guest, Michael O'Brien, had what he refers to as his last bad day. While out on a morning bike ride, an SUV traveling at 40 mph crossed into his lane and struck him head-on, forever altering his life as he knew it. Doctors were shocked that he survived and told him that he'd likely never ride again or even walk with comfort. Yet, in 2022, Michael completed a 41-day, 3,600-mile bike ride across the United States, proving all of them wrong. Today, Michael is a meditation teacher, author, executive coach, and creator of the Pause Breathe Reflect app, which invites users to meditate and take time out to stop a bad moment from becoming a very bad day.  Tune in to hear the remarkable story of his healing journey, the benefits of being mindful, and how to have a meditation practice yourself! “And I did it for about five minutes, and I was like, oh, that felt good. And then I just set my intentions for the day, like, how did I want to show up? I'm like, okay, get your head on straight. Let's attack this rehab. Let's get better. Let's make progress. So I was still trying to plow forward a little bit as opposed to allowing the day to unfold with a little grace. But it felt good. So the next day, I did it again, and then I did it again, and then I started doing it multiple times throughout the day. And soon enough, I had a mindfulness practice, but I didn't know I had a mindfulness practice.” - Michael O'Brien What we discuss in this episode: Michael's memories of everything that happened on that life-changing day in New Mexico. What meditation is, how it was integral to his healing process, and how it helped him “slow down.” His internal transformation after the accident. How he let go of bad habits. The benefits of mindfulness. His recommendations for someone who's starting out with meditation. The importance of silence. Tips for dealing with anger and frustration.   Resources: Michael's website: Pause Breathe Reflect The app: Pause, Breathe, Reflect - Apps on Google Play Instagram: Michael OBrien (@pausebreathereflect) • Instagram photos and videos YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@pausebreathereflect   Send us a voice message. Back in July of 2001, Michael experienced what he calls his ‘last bad day', when he was hit head on by a motorist while riding his bike. This day changed his life, his outlook, and his identity. The road to recovery was a long one and there was a point when Michael realized he had to heal his mind if he wanted to get his body healed. That's when he made the decision to call that terrible day back in July 2001 his last bad day. He has continued to live his life with this decision and today he is a leadership coach as well as a mindfulness and meditation teacher. He healed, he got back on the bike, and last year he rode his bike 3,600 miles across the United States, experiencing all that our country has to offer. I'm joined by Michael O'Brian, an executive coach, speaker, author, and the Chief Calm Officer of the Pause Breathe Reflect™ movement. In 2001, Michael was the marketing lead for a $700M brand and, as he describes it, he was checking everything off the list. He had a college degree, successful career, wife, kids, and a house. But on July 11, 2001, an SUV traveling 40 mph hit him head-on when he was out for a morning bike ride. After being discharged from the ICU, his doctors warned him that he would have a lifetime of limitations, walk with difficulty, and probably never cycle again. Michael's mental health took a major hit after receiving that news. He eventually connected with a mentor who emphasized that everything in life is neutral until you label it. He challenged Michael to start a mindfulness practice, which eventually turned into his signature Pause Breathe Reflect™ session that he shares with leaders today. He came up with the acronym G.R.A.C.E., which stands for Gratitude, Reframing, Awareness, Community, and Energy, as a way to become more resilient and achieve success starting from the inside out.  As a way to commemorate the 21st anniversary of his accident and Last Bad Day, he's embarking on a challenge he's calling the Rise2Ripple. He'll be cycling The TransAmerica Bicycle Trail, which is a whopping 4,300 miles and covers 43 states. It's a celebration of life, generosity, mindfulness, and the beauty of the United States. Michael O'Brien's last bad day was July 11th, 2001. Riding his bike in New Mexico, he was hit head on by an SUV traveling 40 miles per hour and left crippled on the side of the road.  “I remember the sound of me hitting his grill… the thud I made as I crashed onto the asphalt below, and the screech of his brakes.” Wanting to make the best of the situation, Michael promised himself that if he survived, he'd stop trying to chase happiness and begin truly enjoying every day—a profound lesson we can all learn from. In today's episode, Michael shares the story of what happened on his last bad day and how he reframed his situation over the course of several months to heal his mind and body. We dive into how he discovered Pause-Breathe-Reflect meditation, what his daily practice looks like, and how you can immediately begin applying his mindset to your life. KEY TAKEAWAYS How changing the conversations we have with ourselves helps us become more compassionate when we talk with others. Why Michael had to shift his mindset to truly heal after his accident–and how the day of his injury became his last bad day. Why all events in our lives are neutral until we label them–and how Michael processes bad, angry, and sad moments in his life without letting them define his experience. Why Michael does something monumental on the anniversary of his injury every year–and why he's going on a 4,300 mile bike ride from Astoria, Oregon to Yorktown, Virginia this summer. How do you pull yourself together when you've been hit with the most unfortunate circumstance you could ever imagine? It's human nature to be transfixed by the problem.  How about slowing down, so you can get faster? How about reframing your perspectives, so you find opportunities and not just challenges?  Michael O'Brien is the Chief Shift Officer at Peloton Executive Coaching and helps leaders prevent bad moments from turning into a bad day. He has shared his personal transformational Last Bad Day story and leadership advice on the TEDx stage, with Fortune500 companies, Entrepreneur, Fast Company, Real Simple, ABC, and NBC.  In this episode, Michael shares what difference it makes when making a significant change in business and leadership and, most importantly, in the people who matter most to us, our family, and our closest friends. He believes that when we change one life, we make a change everywhere. What you will learn from this episode:  Discover about a simple exercise to do away with stress and use the time to shift perspectives to find opportunity beyond the problem  Learn how to live a life in alignment where authenticity and consistency rule your life Learn the power of seeing a problem as happening for you and not to you "When we feel that we're stressed, when we feel that our self-narrative or chatter isn't as healthy as it could be, I recommend to people - pause, breathe and reflect. Slow it down for a minute or two." - Michael O'Brien Topics Covered: 01:27 - Why the name Chief Shift Officer?  03:13 - How to fully show up as your true self in every aspect of life  05:11 - How authenticity means consistency  06:57 - What have his clients done wrong before consulting with him?  08:37 - Getting results which are impacting not just business success but one's personal life  10:57 - Shifting perspectives in the way we look at a problem  13:10 - Get your FREE ‘A Better Life Workbook.' Click here: https://www.michaelobrienshift.com/  14:25 - The need to pause, breathe, and reflect  Key Takeaways: “What I'm trying to do is help leaders show up fully as themselves in every aspect of their life. And when they do that, they send a powerful ripple to the people on their teams. And as a result, they show up in the way that they can show up. And when we all show up with the type of potential we have, I believe we create better change that the world desperately needs right now.”   “I think there's a line there that is important to honor when we think about work and life. It's that consistency to say, 'Hey, you know what, the person I meet, in-person or online or in the conference room is that same person. That consistency, when there's alignment, things are less stressed.”   “I get hired because I'm going to help them get better at leadership, better at business, help their company make more money, return on shareholder investment, all that jazz. But the stuff that fires me up is that when they're better at home with the people that truly matter in their lives, not to say that their corporate colleagues don't matter.”  “When we think about those people who are going to be with us for our whole lives, we're talking about our family and our closest friends. His last BAD DAY was 19 years ago and it was life changing. Michael O'Brien was out for a nice quick ride on his bike while attending a conference out of town. He came around a corner in an instant, he knew his life had changed forever. Michael was hit head on by a SUV doing over 40mph. He heard the crunch of his body against the grill and hood, he felt the glass break as his head and shoulders went through the windshield. He awoke to find himself surrounded by EMT's and a life flight helicopter transporting him to a level 1 trauma center. Was he going to survive? Would his life ever be the same? Would he ever walk or ride again? Jen and Shawn were fascinated listening to Michael's story of HOPE, CHANGE AND TRANSFORMATION! Sometimes in life, you ask questions like..."why did this happen to me?" Maybe the most challenging and difficult events in our lives didn't happen TO US but instead they happened FOR US!! What if the biggest adversity you face in your life actually ends up being the greatest blessing of your life in disguise? You won't want to miss this episode of the Hope Radio Podcast!

Episode 168: My Last Bad Day - The SHIFT - Interview Michael O'Brien  On the morning of July 11, 2001, Michael O’Brien, an avid cyclist, was riding his bicycle on a New Mexico road when an SUV hit him head-on going 40 mph. The crushing accident left him near death as the mede-vac helicopter descended to take his broken body to be pieced back together. Today Michael is with us and will take us to the darkness of his accident and the long, slow road to recovery, but he’ll also take us to his shift - the moment when he decided it was the power of his mind that would decide the rest of his life. It wasn’t the tragedy that would define him, but how he responded to the tragedy. I recently returned from a Genius Bootcamp, put on by Leslie Householder, in Arizona. The concept behind her teachings are a greater understanding of universal law and how to implement those laws for the greatest most powerful creations of our own lives. At the very foundation of universal law is the understanding of the power of the human mind. Where we focus our attention begins to create things spiritually, and eventually we bring those into the physical world - whether it’s an idea of something we want to create, attracting money, or changing our vibrations to live healthier or with more joy. Truth always ties into truth and as I read Michael O’Brien’s book Shift  and cheered him on as he intentionally chose the mindset and perspective that would help him make his way back into a life he wanted, I just smiled at the way this truth comes up over and over. This is why I’m always asking you, “What story are you telling yourself?” “Are you creating your life on purpose?” And “You’re responsible for creating the life story you want to tell.” It’s all about our personal agency to shift our story when needed.” Listen to the audio program to hear Michael's story and how he shifted. We talk about questions like: 1. Your accident was almost 20 years ago and I believe your book just came out. When did you decide you wanted to start sharing your story and why? 2. Take us back to the accident - what do you remember? 3. What was the hardest part? 4. What would you do differently? 5. What were you most grateful for at the time? 6. How did the shift happen? 7. You have 20 tips at the back of your book - can you share your top 3? When I talk about reframing our stories - the ones that are holding us back, I’m talking about this very thing - this SHIFT. When we are stuck in a story that isn’t serving us, we MUST understand that we can shift our perspective and change our interpretation in order to stay on higher vibrational levels - in order to stay out of the victim mindset - in order to live our best life story.  I’m grateful to Michael for sharing his story and his shift and giving us a visual of what that looks like in action. The power of our minds more vast than we can comprehend. Use yours to create your best space: to lift you when you are down, to intentionally create the life you want, to overcome. For more information on Michael and his books: www.facebook.com/michaelspeloton www.instagram.com/michaelobrienshift Books: My Last Bed Day Shift, and his memoir: Shift: Creating Better Tomorrows Your challenge this week is to find a story that needs to shift for you. Are you in a fight with your spouse and you can choose to let go of a way of seeing something that can help you find a happier space? Are you holding a grudge - can you shift and give someone the benefit of the doubt? Do you have something bigger that needs a major shift? Try changing the thought and see what happens. Things only have the power we give them. See you in two weeks on the next episode of Love Your Story

Michael O’Brien is the Chief Shift Officer atPeloton Coaching and Consulting. He elevates successful corporate leaders by preventing bad moments from turning into bad days. His award-winning, best-selling memoir Shift: Creating Better Tomorrows chronicles his Last Bad Day and near-death cycling accident recovery journey. He has shared his inspirational story and transformation from human DOer to human BEing and work and at home on the TEDxstage, with multiple Fortune 500 companies, ABC, Real Simple Fast Company, and many wonderful podcasts like Do a Day. Michael was a successful sales professional and Marketing Director. The same stress that you and your team feel every day burdened him. There were many days when he just wanted to survive. He knew he could be better, but didn’t know how to consistently find the energy to thrive and get closer to being his best. The sad thing is that he didn’t need to be chasing back then. He already had many wonderful reasons to be happy. He was a proud, new dad of two wonderful daughters, had a loving wife who was and still is his best friend, he was healthy, and he had a career filled with promise. But he rationalized his chase and, in hindsight, made up ego-based reasons why he had to keep living that way. Many times, he caught happiness, but like a dog chasing its tail, he didn’t know what to do when he caught it. He was happy for a moment. It validated his pursuit, but then it floated away. So, he got back to stressfully chasing. He was exhausted but couldn’t tell anyone because he was the leader at work and the provider to his family. He knew there was a better way, but he couldn't see it. Then, on Monday, July 11, 2001, while at a corporate meeting in New Mexico, Michael went out for an early morning bike ride that changed his life permanently. An SUV crossed the center line in the road and hit him head-on, going close to 40 miles per hour (plus Michael's speed). As he laid waiting for the medical trauma helicopter, he told himself that life would be different if he lived. His recovery was the catalyst to the seminal shift that changed his perspective, mindset, and actions. It put him on a path to create better tomorrows at work and in life, and sparked his executive career progression, which was instrumental to finding happiness and passion for business leadership development and creating his business, Peloton Coaching and Consulting. It also lead to his amazing book, My Last Bad Day Shift: How to Prevent Bad Moments from Turning into Bad Days. Michael shares the story of his accident, and the shift that came as a result. His experience is the inspiration for many to shift their situation, so listen to this episode and find how you, too, can shift your life from whatever Last Bad Day you may have. Key Points from the Episode with Michael O'Brien: Michael is a husband and father of two girls, which is how he frames himself first and foremost Secondly, he is a leadership coach, focused on sales and marketing leaders to help them change how they work as a portal to how we behave as a society. He described it as helping people be wealthy from the inside out We got into the idea that we are a complete person, and can’t show up in one part of our life differently from how we do in another. If that’s what’s happening, we are acting in at least one part of our life. We are spending all our energy in one area, and left with nothing for another. Michael talked about the idea so many of us live with around having just meh or vanilla days where “it is what it is.” To him, that’s not acceptance so much as settling and coasting. He uses the brilliant cycling analogy around coasting - if you coast for too long, sooner or later, you’re going to stop. Michael shared the story of his biking accident on July 11th, 2001 while in New Mexico at a work offsite meeting. He was hit head-on by a white, Ford Explorer that had drifted into his lane with a distracted driver behind the wheel. He suffered tremendous and life-threatening injuries, and had to be medi-vaced to the nearest Level 1 Trauma center. When this happened, his wife and two daughters (then 3 and 7-months old) were across the country at home in New Jersey. His injuries were extensive, with it unclear whether he would lose his leg once his life was stabilized. After several operations, and months of grueling recovery work, Michael regained the ability to walk, and eventually to ride a bike again. Pinning a number on at a biking event today is the sweetest symbol to him of what he came through. This event and the process that ensued created the basis for his book, Shift, which brings the reader up to and through this moment where his life shifted. He had been white-knuckling his life before, just working to get through. In losing almost everything forced Michael to step back and find a new way to define himself as he faced the idea of depending on others for the rest of his days, losing control of so much of his life, and more. He realized the need to let go, trust in others, and trust in himself. That included a journey of forgiveness. That included people who he thought would come to see him, but never did. He found himself focusing on those people, and as a result, he lost sight of those who were there. Bitterness and pain around who did not come out to support him consumed Michael. For them, he realized how difficult it was for those people to show up. In situations like that, we often don’t even know what to say. We get scared and overwhelmed, and they deal with and experience the situation through their lens. It helped him feel compassion and understanding for them rather than anger that consumed him. He also found forgiveness for the driver of that car. It wasn’t about the driver, but rather about letting go of the energy toward the driver that was getting in the way of Michael’s recovery and his ability to appreciate what he did have rather than what he didn’t have. His shift came in a specific moment during a physical therapy session. Michael wondered why some people were making progress and others weren’t. He wasn’t happy with the progress he was making, so he was curious. Michael realized how his mind was standing in the way of his progress. He needed to find alignment between his outward thoughts, words and actions and those within him, which were less positive. Michael started a morning ritual of calm, breathing and reflection that framed his days in rehab, which he’s also used to frame his days since then. His goal is to show up with intention, purpose and drive, respecting the day that he has since he nearly lost all of it. I had to call out this great line from his “20 Ways of Being” at the end of Shift. He says that you can never let someone out-hustle you on what really matters. It sparked thoughts about how hard it is to say, “No," to things, but if those things aren’t what truly matters, then you leave the door open to be out-hustled on those things. He reminds us that every No is a Yes. When you say, “No,” to one thing, it allows you to say, “Yes,” to something else, which matters more. Looking at it that way helps with feeling ok saying, “No.” We also talked about the word Peloton, which Michael uses as the name of his coaching and consulting business. It is the name for a group of cyclists, who must work together as a group to protect each other, share the burden of breaking the wind to ease the effort for the group and stay synchronized so no one throws the group off or creates a disruption that can lead to the group crashing. He uses the metaphor a lot in the idea of finding your peloton, and being mindful of who you bring into it to ride with you. More About the Show Michael was in New Mexico for a big company meeting that would last several days. He had it all planned out. Instead of resorting to the lack-luster hotel gym, he’d bring his bike, and cross a state off his cycling checklist. It was July 11, 2001, and Michael discovered a two-mile loop originated at the hotel that he could ride before the day’s meetings began. Three laps went smooth as planned. Michael was enjoying the sunshine and dry roads. On his fourth lap, as he rounded a bend in the road, an SUV going the opposite direction crossed over into his path, hitting Michael head on at 40 mph–himself going around 20 mph. In an instant, his life would forever change. As the SUV made contact with Michael’s body, his momentum hurled him over the hood and face-first into the windshield, then coming down in a thud, while sliding several feet on the asphalt. The accident shattered the bones in face, snapped his scapula, cracked ribs, broke his arms and wrists, and shattered his left femur. As he was being medevaced to the nearest hospital for emergency surgery, he learn he’d severed his femoral artery and was bleeding out. He was given 34 units of blood, and spent dozens of hours in surgeries to mend his broken everything. “The doctors told my wife... if I was 10 years older or not in good shape, I would have certainly passed around before he’d gotten to the hospital.” O’Brien recounts. “I knew my life was in the balance… I promised myself if I lived, life would be different and I would stop chasing happiness.” We will all likely face a life-altering moment when it is least expected. Michael O’Brien was cycling when his happened, and what followed became the cornerstone of his life’s mission today. Michael was nearly killed over 17 years ago, and what he has done since then to turn things around, and become the positive influence he is now is the basis for my episode today. That and a six pack of PBRs! “The message I preach is resilience and a lot of gratitude. Gratitude for what we still have and can do, and resilience is just get back up again.” Resilience. Tenacity. Optimism in the face of being in a really bad place. Michael has been there, and emerged a much stronger man than he was pre-crash. This episode will resonate with you, as you will hear us talk about recovery, and how to change how we all look at life, and family, friends and work. “We all have the voices in our head that hold us back… when that happens, what I do is grab a PBR… Pause. Breathe. Reflect on the story we tell ourselves. Then try to reverse engineer the result that we want.” OK, we didn’t actually drink a six pack of Pabst Blue Ribbons (insert product placement residual here). What Michael did instead was to teach us all how to take a break from our stressful and hectic lives, and do a PBR, (Pause, Breathe, Reflect) which you will learn how to do. We talk about leadership, empathy, business success, along with a gratuitous book promo! Make sure to hear about this and much more! Happy Listening! “If folks could lead with a bit more empathy, we would solve a lot more problems in the corporate world.” “Great cultures, whether at work or personal, start with great relationships... a great relationship is born out of great conversation.”   Some Topics we talk about in this episode: Introduction - 0:56 Michael’s “Last Bad Day” - 4:58 Current Coaching Philosophy - 16:22 One Degree of Flexion - 22:50 Advice for Others Who Have Been Through Trauma - 24:50 Current Coaching Demographic - 30:12 Empathy and Business Success - 33:30 “Hit Your Mark!” - 40:42 What Legacy Do You Want to Leave? - 48:58 Micro Mindfulness - 55:18 Wrap-up and Takeaways - 57:34     How to get involved Be sure to connect with me on Social Media @MarkMoyerCoach and go to my website, www.markmoyer.com to get access to the tips and strategies that my coaching clients get directly. Michael OBrien was living a successful life – on the surface. He had a career, money, family, everything that is supposed to add up to happiness. Behind this facade, at the core of his being, he felt trapped and unfulfilled. In his own words, he was a “human doer,” not a human being. Unfortunately,  many people live this way. Fortunately,  you don’t have to almost lose your life to transform from human doer to human being. Michael’s experience and the lessons he learned from it can help you enrich your life personally and financially. Michael fell in love with bicycles as a child. His passion for cycling grew into his adulthood. He took his bike with him on a business trip with the intention of combining work with pleasure. That decision almost killed him. For a while, it turned him into a vengeful person. Learn how he  turned anger into love, fear into courage, despair into hope, how he stopped being a victim to life’s circumstances and became a victor instead. Your success is our success. When you work with Peloton, you get an ALL-IN partner with an executive coach who understands your world because I've lived your world as a 22+ year veteran in multiple pharmaceutical leadership and executive roles. In the past, I was convinced that "good enough was good enough." I thought that living under an umbrella of stress was “business as usual in the corporate world.” I never looked past my own assumptions because I was too busy establishing my career, providing for my family, and driving for results. Then, in an instant, my life changed. On the morning of July 11, 2001, I was out on a cycling training ride before a corporate meeting. I was hit head-on by an SUV that crossed into my lane traveling 40 mph My doctors told me if I had been unhealthy or 10 years older, I probably would have died that day. But somewhere along my recovery journey, I decided I would not be defined by my accident. Rather, I would be defined by how I responded to my accident, and with that, I made the choice to recalibrate my approach to the rest of my life.
