Inspiring Women with Laurie McGraw
How Does Personal Tragedy Shape One Of The Most Powerful Women In Healthcare? w/Karen Lynch || EP. 201

Inspiring Women with Laurie McGraw

When Karen Lynch became CEO of CVS Health, it was more than a milestone, it was a signal. Millions were watching. She led through the pandemic. She raised wages. She centered the patient. She broke glass ceilings again and again. “I remember the day Karen became CEO,” says host Laurie McGraw. “I think the world stood still for a minute. I smiled. I took notice. And so did everyone else.” The accolades poured in: Forbes Most Powerful Women, Fortune's Most Admired. But the impact went far beyond headlines. This conversation isn't just about what Karen accomplished at the top—it's about the experiences that shaped her long before she got there, and the values driving how she leads today. Like many leaders, Karen's path was forged in her beginnings. For her, those beginnings were marked by unimaginable loss: losing her mother to suicide at age 12, and just a decade later, losing the aunt who raised her. That grief left an indelible mark—a sense of urgency to fix a healthcare system she had experienced not as a leader, but as someone failed by it. That lived experience has been her North Star. From her early days in finance to leading one of the largest healthcare organizations in the world, Karen has consistently asked: What does the patient need? And how can we make it simpler?  As a leader, she learned that courage isn't a talking point, it's a practice. And sometimes, it means making a hard decision that costs you. When her tenure at CVS ended, it wasn't scandal. It wasn't a failure. It was a choice, grounded in accountability. Because real leadership isn't just about celebrating the wins—it's about owning the moments that hurt. Now in a chapter of reinvention, Karen is clear: she's not stepping back, she's stepping into purpose. From helping future CEOs find their voice, to launching a women's leadership institute, to urging healthcare leaders to rebuild public trust before it's too late, she is focused on impact over position. The title may be different. The mission is not. In this episode of Inspiring Women with Laurie McGraw, Karen also speaks about: What would healthcare look like if we designed it around the patient? Can simplicity heal what complexity has broken? How do we rebuild public trust in healthcare—and what happens if we don't? How can we better prepare the next generation of women leaders? Is technology the single most powerful lever for healthcare transformation? What does it take to navigate reinvention with optimism, purpose, and grace? Thank you Karen Lynch. In this episode of the Tick Boot Camp Podcast, host Matt Sabatello and special guest co-host Khalil Fuller sit down with Alan Bergo, a James Beard Award-winning chef, professional forager, and author, to discuss his personal battle with Lyme disease. Alan shares how his love for wild food shaped his culinary career, the hardships he faced after contracting Lyme, and how he found healing through foraging and alternative therapies. His story is one of resilience, transformation, and the powerful connection between nature and wellness. Key Takeaways: Alan's Culinary and Foraging Journey: Growing up in Minnesota, Alan worked his way up in the culinary world, eventually becoming an executive chef and a renowned expert in wild food. The Moment Lyme Changed Everything: While leading foraging tours, Alan unknowingly contracted Lyme disease, which led to a cascade of debilitating symptoms, including Bell's palsy, cluster headaches, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Struggles with Diagnosis and Treatment: Despite recognizing his symptoms early, Alan faced challenges in getting proper medical care, receiving only a short round of doxycycline. The Aftermath of Lyme: Chronic neurological issues forced Alan to reevaluate his career, leading him to explore alternative treatments and lifestyle changes, including foraging as a form of therapy. The Role of Alternative Medicine: Alan discusses how eliminating gluten and alcohol, along with the use of psilocybin, helped him manage his chronic headaches. Advice for Lyme Warriors and Nature Enthusiasts: Alan emphasizes the importance of early Lyme detection, tick prevention (such as permethrin-treated clothing), and seeking community support. From Tragedy to Triumph: After Lyme forced him to step away from the restaurant industry, Alan channeled his passion into writing, public speaking, and hosting The Wild Harvest Show, which earned him two Taste Awards and a James Beard Award. Why You Should Listen: If you're interested in Lyme disease recovery, the healing power of wild food, or how nature can transform one's life, Alan's story is both inspiring and educational. Whether you're battling Lyme, curious about foraging, or seeking motivation to overcome challenges, this episode is packed with insights that will resonate deeply.

The time on the watch, 2:30, became a symbol of his second chance at life. The Struggle Beyond the BattlefieldJR didn't shy away from discussing the darker times post-injury. From Tragedy to Triumph Mandy Horvath | The Hopeaholics PodcastJoin us on the Hopeaholics Podcast for an awe-inspiring episode featuring the incredible journey of Mandy, an American bi-lateral above-knee amputee. She's not just a survivor; she's a creative writer, a compelling public speaker, a talented actress, and an adventurous mountaineer. On July 26, 2014, Mandy faced a life-changing moment when she was struck by a locomotive near a bar in Steele City, Nebraska. After consuming two beers and two shots while playing pool inside the tavern throughout the evening, she walked outside and blacked out, regaining consciousness in an ambulance with no lower extremities. She believes she was incapacitated by a date rape drug, but was woken from a medically induced coma several days later without the ability to test for the drugs in her system. The authorities had written the incident off as a suicide attempt. Horvath's date of that night suspiciously died of carbon monoxide poisoning, just a few months later that year. He was found deceased within the cab of a vehicle, in a closed garage. The authorities labeled his death an accident despite his profession as a heavy equipment operator. Nearly a year into recovery from the initial trauma, Horvath was set back again, having to be re-amputated due to a rare form of bone regeneration.Mandy's story is nothing short of extraordinary. She's notably the first female bi-lateral amputee to achieve remarkable feats, including summiting the Manitou Incline, conquering Pikes Peak not once but twice, ascending the Statue of Liberty stairwell to the crown, and conquering Tanzania's formidable Mount Kilimanjaro, all without the use of prosthetic equipment. Join Steve as he continues his discussion with attorney Rory Clark, a seasoned professional who knows a thing or two about resilience and strategic growth.  In this episode of Great Practice, Great Life, Steve and Rory touch on a fascinating paradox of growth through elimination and subtraction, exploring how Rory has strategically removed certain aspects of his life and practice to enable expansion. Rory shares how he's exercised courage and navigated false hope, managing to execute necessary endings and pivot towards a more holistic business model. His unique approach to time management - saying no to certain things to allow room to say yes to others - offers a fresh perspective on work-life balance. Steve and Rory also explore practical ways to create growth in a law firm, from leveraging non-attorney staff to developing an effective pre-education process for clients. Listen in as they examine how to attract higher-paying clients and improve your initial consultation process. They then transition into a deeper discussion on the importance of having a clear, purposeful vision and starting with the end in mind. Steve and Rory share the significance of removing ego from the equation and how this can pave the way for successful outcomes. Their conversation doesn't stop there. Rory shares advice on setting boundaries and creating an environment conducive to success. They discuss the power of group coaching and gaining perspective outside their own. From Tragedy to Triumph: The Journey of Writing 'Wounds' In this week's episode of the podcast "Self Funded" with Spencer, hosted by Spencer Smith, performance coach Ryan Miller shares his unique coaching approach that combines psychology, self-perception, and personal branding. Ryan's coaching journey began with a focus on sales, but it quickly evolved to encompass a deeper understanding of human behavior and the importance of self-perception in achieving success. Ryan believes that influence, relationship building, and understanding oneself are crucial for success. His coaching aims to help individuals uncover their potential and overcome self-destructive behaviors. He emphasizes the importance of personal branding and authenticity in achieving both professional and personal fulfillment. One of the key aspects of his coaching approach is his focus on psychology and human behavior. He believes that understanding how individuals see themselves and their true potential is essential for unlocking their success. Ryan states, "My coaching today is about seeing inside of other people what they can't see inside of themselves, bringing those things to the surface, and then helping them leverage those tools to go get whatever they want." This coaching approach goes beyond traditional sales techniques and methodologies. While he acknowledges the importance of process and execution, he believes that human behavior and self-perception are the driving forces behind success. He explains, "Sales is a fraction of a percent of what I do to help people be successful as it relates to generating revenue or achieving a goal. Human behavior and psychology, rooted in how we see ourselves and who we really are, is what drives us to be able to execute, to achieve, to be successful." In his upcoming memoir, 'Wounds', Miller shares his personal experiences and challenges, including surviving the Vegas mass shooting in 2017. He believes that healing past wounds and understanding one's own story is crucial for personal growth and success. He says, "I had all these unhealed wounds in my life... all of these were just compounding on top of each other, and they were creating a version of me that I didn't love." Personal branding is another important aspect of Miller's coaching approach. He emphasizes the importance of authenticity and self-discovery in building a unique personal brand. He explains, "There is no worse position in life to be than living as somebody other than yourself." He believes that understanding one's true identity and communicating it effectively is essential for standing out in a competitive market. However, Miller acknowledges that balancing different factors in coaching can be challenging. He states, "But what does that do? That hinders your ability to uniquely identify yourself in a market. And so therefore, the customers that you're trying to pursue don't see you as any different than anybody else." In conclusion, Ryan Miller's coaching approach combines psychology, self-perception, and personal branding to help individuals uncover their potential and achieve success. By understanding human behavior, healing past wounds, and embracing authenticity, he believes that individuals can overcome self-destructive behaviors and achieve both professional and personal fulfillment. Domenic Cervoni is the Vice President of Legal and Senior Legal Counsel for HSBC, where he handles litigation and regulatory enforcement for the company's global banking and markets business.  Domenic has also developed a passion for employee health and well-being, with a particular focus on matters of mental health in the legal industry. This deep interest led him to pen his first book, From Tragedy to Triumph, and he is donating 100% of the proceeds to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In this episode… What does it take to be a better lawyer? Do you have to know the ins and outs of every case at your firm? Should you focus on making partner, no matter how many late nights it requires? Do you have to subtract vacations out of the equation to make it to the top?  According to Domenic Cervoni, the key to success is, instead, focusing on your mental health. A public speaker and Vice President of Legal at HSBC, Domenic believes that prioritizing your well-being is exactly what will make you a better lawyer and, ultimately, the best version of yourself.  Join us on this episode of The Lawyer's Edge as Elise Holtzman sits down with Domenic Cervoni, the Vice President of Legal and Senior Legal Counsel at HSBC. Domenic talks about his passion for focusing on your mental well-being, why the legal industry isn't the best at handling health issues, and how firms and other organizations can start to shift toward a culture with less burnout and higher retention. Stay tuned.
