Today on the podcast I am talking to film composers: Michelle Birsky and Kevin Henthorn. They just scored the new Netflix series' Terminator: Zero. This is the full episode. From the moment I learned about the project, I was captivated by the idea of blending the iconic Terminator universe with anime. My guests, Kevin Henthorn and Michelle Burski, are the talented duo behind the score, and they shared their experiences growing up in Connecticut and Maine, respectively, and how their passion for music and film led them to this unique opportunity. Kevin's obsession with film began in film school, while Michelle's journey started with songwriting and indie films. Together, they created a sound that is both haunting and beautiful, using unconventional instruments and found sounds to evoke the emotions of the story. They recorded much of the score in their home studio during the pandemic, showcasing their resourcefulness and creativity. The process was a labor of love, and they learned a lot about confidence and collaboration along the way. The score features themes that reflect the characters' journeys, with a focus on emotional depth and storytelling. From the moody tones to the uplifting melodies, every note was carefully crafted to enhance the narrative. The duo also discussed their inspirations, including the works of Johan Johansson and Trent Reznor, and how they aimed to create something fresh and innovative. MICHELLE BIRSKY AND KEVIN HENTHORN Most recently known for scoring The Netflix anime series Terminator Zero, The Lesbian Bar Project (documentary series, Roku) and Mother/Android (feature film, Hulu), Michelle Birsky and Kevin Henthorn are a married, composing duo based in Los Angeles. Their music is contemporary and emotional, often incorporating found sounds and vocals with a strong electro-acoustic pull. With years spent in the New York indie music scene, Michelle and Kevin bring a unique perspective to composition, drawing inspiration from composers like Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and Mica Levi. Michelle, a vocalist, producer, and electronic musician, and Kevin, an accomplished guitarist and vocalist, bridge their talents into a cohesive, well-rounded entity that creates emotionally-driven, electro-acoustic music. The two have always had a strong interest in film scoring, but they came to it from different backgrounds. Michelle graduated from Kenyon College with a degree in music. Kevin graduated from the Film Conservatory at Purchase College. Michelle and Kevin met in Brooklyn in 2014 and for the majority of their 20's they pursued their own musical projects: Michelle, a synth-pop artist project called Birch, and Kevin, a folk-rock project called Cape Francis. During that time, Michelle also focused on film composing, writing for sync and working under esteemed composer Elliot Goldenthal.When the pandemic hit in March 2020, the pair decided to take the leap and move from NY to LA to focus on film composing, and soon were brought on to score Mother/Android, which premiered on Hulu in December, 2021. Together, through their music, Michelle and Kevin seek to help tell stories that broaden minds, and find truth and beauty in human life. Did you talk to scientists so that the audience would watch this and say, “yeah, this flies. This works for us.” MATTSON TOMLIN: Yeah. Probably not to the degree that the PhD guy would be happy with me, but definitely a lot of reading about Turing tests today and about what the capabilities [of AI] are. It's kind of one of those things where, as far as we know and what the public facing information is, we're not quite there yet … I think that the jumps [in capability] are exponential. So there was still a level of invention. It's a sci-fi show, so you've got to make some stuff up, but we also made  sure that it never felt like it was fully beyond the bounds of what's actually happening out there today. THE STORYDiF: When was the moment during production that you as a writer, as a showrunner, felt like, “yeah, this thing has wings. This thing can fly.” MT: There's a couple of different answers to that, because it comes in stages. I feel really proud of the show. I think that there are stages … For me, the first time that that happened was while I was writing, and I got through episode four [and then] once I started writing episode five, it's like, “oh, now the plane has taken off, and now we're at altitude, and now, actually, I have to think about landing.” Having these four episodes, and I can I can read that 100 or so pages and go, “I stand by this, this is working now I just need to land the plane.” It's not that I felt like, “oh, I've got this.” But I felt like there was enough material that there's a story that is being told now that feels worth telling. That was kind of the first time. The second time was definitely once art started to come in from [anime studio] Production IG, and seeing the level at which they were executing and [knowing] this is going to look beautiful. I think then the third time was certainly the working on the score and working with [Terminator Zero composers] Michelle Birsky and Kevin Henthorn and finding a sonic identity for the score that felt like Terminator, and at the same time, does its own thing. We didn't just want to be playing the same stuff, it needed to feel inherently its own.THE VIBEDiF: Why was the decision made to do this as an anime?MT: From a creative standpoint, you're just able to do things that haven't been done before, because if you're making a movie and a movie that's in a franchise like Terminator, then there are certain expectations, certain beats that it has to hit. And, you know, those movies are $100-200 million movies. A [movie of that scale] is going to be a certain kind of thing. And this isn't that. Not only because it's animated, but because it's an anime. So it creates these variables … It's an opportunity to kind of breathe a lot of new life into it …it was kind of driven by story and an opportunity to just do something the franchise hadn't done before.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?We also took a deep scientific look at the paradox that so much of the entire Terminator franchise revolves around. We talk through Mother/Android (2021), a Hulu Original that follows a pregnant couple's journey during a robot-apocalypse. While there are many movies out there with a similar setting (Terminator, I, Robot, and The Mitchells vs. The Machines to name a few), this film takes a bold approach to barely including any robots and skip most of the action sequences with time jumps. However, the payoff comes at the ending, which is unintentionally hilarious.

We are back, baby! Nach einmonatiger Pause sind wir zurück und haben allerlei News für euch im Gepäck. Während Juliane kräftig das Samsung-Fangirl raushängen lässt, haben Nico und Sven für euch Neues zu Nicolas Cage und „The Boys“ im Gepäck. Durchwachsenes Fazit Der letzte Monat lässt uns mit einem seltsamen Gefühl zurück, denn sämtliche Filme und Serien schlitterten irgendwo zwischen „kann man mal anschauen“ und „muss man echt nicht sehen“ herum. Der Vorreiter der Unnötigkeit ist dabei wohl „The Eternals“ von Marvel auf Disney+, der nicht mal selbst weiß, wo er eigentlich hin will. Weiter geht es mit „Mother / Android“, welcher zwar von unserem Team teilweiße gelobt aber dafür von den Kritikern zerrissen wird, weswegen wir ihn nur mit dem Prädikat „macht euch ein eigenes Bild“ versehen können. Zum Abschluss kommen nochmal Fans von Will Ferrell, richtig flach-schwarzem Satire Humor und der Schauspielerin Kristen Bell auf ihre Kosten – aber leider auch nur die. Für die Hardcore-Anhänger dürfte sich „The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window” wie ein Meisterwerk anfühlen, während jeder andere vermutlich alleine schon bei dem Titel ein Zucken im Augenlied verspürt. Ein Ausblick auf bessere Zeiten? Doch zum Glück ist die Winterpause bei den meisten Serien ja nun vorbei, oder ganz neue Staffeln starten. Und so freuen wir uns in den nächsten Wochen besonders auf neue Folgen von „Disenchantment“ und „The Walking Dead“. Wir wünschen euch wie immer viel Spaß beim Hören, und freuen uns auf euer Feedback.
