We talk with Army combat veteran, and former Special Forces Public Affairs specialist, Aaron Knowles about “Shred the Stress” an organization he founded to bring the therapeutic benefits of the “Onewheel” electric skateboard, to veterans everywhere. But the joy of sharing our warfighter's stories, was complicated by his own war wounds.Knowles reveals the after-effects of traumatic brain injuries and describes living with PTSD. After trying to manage his mental health with the usual recommendations, he discovered an alternative tool that delivered powerful results- the Onewheel, electric skateboard.Knowles described how surfing the earth on this unique board made him stoked in ways medication could not. Realizing his immediate improvement, he founded a riding group for all veterans, “Shred the Stress”.Now based in Brooklyn, NY. we learn more about the group, its future, and how veterans across the country can get involved. For more, check out Shred the Stress: https://www.shredthestress.org/ Discover the Onewheel here: https://onewheel.com/For more military news and veteran stories see Connecting Vets here: https://www.audacy.com/connectingvets Connect with CBS Eye on Veterans, Host, Phil Briggs phil@connectingvets.com Follow: @philbriggsVet @connectingvetsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
On this weeks episode of One For The Road i am joined by Phil Briggs who is a 54 year old make-up artist living in London who stopped drinking alcohol in April 2024. Phil was born and raised in Liverpool during the 70s and 80s and moved to live amongst the bright lights of London when he was 21 years old. Phil, like many, discovered alcohol at a young age of 15 and it soon became part of all social life both in Liverpool and following the move to London. He remembers being frequently drunk from the age of 16 when he left school and began working for a large bank. Socialising with the Liverpool banking colleagues whilst at the same time regularly having nights out on Liverpool's gay scene, alcohol featured heavily several times per week. This continued following the move to London with new banking colleagues and a busy London gay nightlife. Social drinking continued for many years and in his 30s, Phil found drinking wine with meals indoors became an additional regular time to imbibe. In 2012, Phil was hit with a series of life-changing events including job loss, divorce, financial difficulties and bereavement. While not directly responsible for these incidents, alcohol, which had previously been reserved for socialising and enjoying with a meal, became the go to coping mechanism for difficult life events. By the time the pandemic hit in 2020, Phil was already drinking every night in increasing amounts and being alone during the pandemic it escalated to whole new levels of drinking. When a very close friend of 30 years died of Covid, Phil found dealing with the grief without being able to see anyone else, cemented very heavy, nightly drinking in place. Phil knew something had to change and after months of procrastination decided on a three month break from alcohol which turned into a realisation that the only option for him was to stop completely. It hasn't been a simple path, with extra health problems coming to the surface and dealing with living alone where most of the heavy drinking had taken place. But research on the subject and connection with others going through the same has enabled Phil to remain alcohol free. Phil now uses his make-up skills to help those with skin conditions which cause them a loss of confidence, to use specialist skin creams to cover the conditions. Now, more than six months alcohol free, he is beginning to notice subtle but vital changes in his life and for the first time in many years is very excited about the future and finding out what he is capable of.Phil's websites:www.camouflageconsultations.comwww.philbriggsmakeup.comIf you want to connect with me via Instagram, you can find me on the instahandle @Soberdave https://www.instagram.com/soberdave/or via my website https://davidwilsoncoaching.com/Provided below are links for services offering additional help and advice.www.drinkaware.co.uk/advice/alcohol-support-serviceshttps://nacoa.org.uk/Show producer- Daniella Attanasio-MartinezInstagram - @TheDaniellaMartinezhttps://www.instagram.com/thedaniellamartinez/www.instagram.com/grownuphustle Hosted on Acast. In this episode we'll go from the jungles of Vietnam to a small-town diner in Illinois! Mr. Lynn Lowder is a Vietnam veteran and former Marine Corps Force Recon Team Leader who in his seventies, founded Rosie's Home Cooking. This classic diner builds off the famous portrait of Rosie the Riveter and delivers the vintage 1950's experience. But his impact is felt far beyond his small town in Illinois. He's also the co-founder of The Veterans Business Project, a non-profit organization that has helped thousands of vets start their own business. We open the show with his memories from Vietnam. Few people can say they were part of a team who invented something that has saved countless lives in combat. Lynn Lowder recalls how members of his Marine Force Recon unit invented the "SPIE" rig (Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction) a strap that's used to deploy and extract combat forces and is still being used by Special Operations teams today. After the military, Lowder founded the Veteran Business Project. This non-profit organization has helped many veterans become business owners, through mentorship and a unique way of pairing aspiring veteran entrepreneurs with successful founders who wish to sell their business to a skilled vet. Lowder concludes our conversation with the inspiring story of Rosie's Home Cooking. And how it's become so successful paying homage to our nation's heroes while serving up American diner classics. This week we discuss an epic short film “The Metal Detector”. It's a WWII veteran story with a modern twist. The film documents how Georg, an Austrian retiree whose mother witnessed the crash of an Allied B-17 during World War II, takes up metal detecting to find the wreckage. His fascination (and sheer determination) lead him on a heartfelt mission, to not only research the backgrounds of the American crewmembers who parachuted off the plane into enemy territory, but also locate their descendants, and bring them to his Austrian town for the 75th anniversary of the crash. Our guests; Filmmaker Brendan Patrick Hughes and documentary subject Mick Berry, an actor, musician and gifted playwright, discuss the trip to Austria where they met the townspeople who helped their fathers, other descendants of the crew, and discover pieces of the wreckage. We also discuss the lives of these brave men, and are offered a glimpse into how they dealt with their PTSD after the war, as told through Berry's one-man play “My father fought Hitler, the bottle and me”.It's a fascinating story of empathy, resilience, and the enduring power of human connection.See The Metal Detector trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5nQe52xqAkWatch the film on PBS here (or stream on the PBS app): https://www.pbs.org/show/the-metal-detector/More from Mick Berry here: https://www.mick-berry.com/index.html Contact CBS Eye on Veterans, Host, Phil Briggs phil@connectingvets.com Follow on Social: @philbriggsVet @EyeOnVeterans For more veteran news and interesting stories check out: https://www.audacy.com/connectingvetsSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We investigate another side of the Israel-Hamas War raging in Gaza through the eye of a veteran who was an advisor to the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Iraq War. In a recent op-ed, Dennis Fritz (Ret.) Air Force Command Chief Master Sergeant, Pentagon Senior Enlisted Advisor called out those in Congress who favor an escalation of fighting in Gaza, and even call for attacks on Iran. He calls for; the US to be a formidable peace broker in the region, lead efforts for real negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian people and explains why US leaders should not be looking to take this fight directly to Iran.We also address the most vexing question regarding peace negotiations - Who represents peaceful Palestinians when their elected government is Hamas, a barbaric terrorist organization?Find more from USAF veteran Dennis Fritz, Director of The Eisenhower Media Network here:https://eisenhowermedianetwork.org/To reach CBS Eye on Veterans Host, Phil Briggs: phil@connectingvets.comFollow on Twitter:@philbriggsVet @eyeonveteransSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

There is a tremendous focus on mental health in America today. But what are the real sources of pain for many vets? Making enough money to pay the bills. Air Force veteran and America's Warrior Partnership (AWP), President, Jim Lorraine shows how this issue is the driving force behind anxiety, depression and even the suicide epidemic. However, help is available. We look at how AWP helps vets with emergency finances through local resources. And ways veterans can connect with AWP partners who are actively training/hiring veterans for great careers right now. Lorraine also shares why vets often choose college degree programs over apprenticeships, even though skilled trade jobs are in high demand and often pay more. The cycle of financial hardship leading to mental health issues is real, but AWP offers a way to break this trend. For more info check out:www.americaswarriorpartnership.orgTo reach CBS Eye on Veterans Host, Phil Briggs: phil@connectingvets.comFollow on Twitter:@philbriggsVet @eyeonveteransSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

And how his combat related PTSD may have played a pivotal part in his son's decision to leave reality behind and live life on the streets.Smithwick also shares where he believes Andrew is living now, and offers hope that they will eventually find him and get him the support he needs to heal his invisible wounds. To support the search for Andrew check out the Facebook page, “Find Andrew Smithwick”:https://www.facebook.com/findandrewsmithwick(443) 756-7119FindAndrewSmithwick@gmail.comTo reach Phil Briggs, Host, CBS Eye on Veterans: phil@connectingvets.comFollow on Twitter:@philbriggsVet @eyeonveteransSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
On today's show we remember and honor the combat veteran, hip hop artist Doc Todd, whose life was cut short after a heart attack last month. George Michael Todd went by “Mik” but he was known to the rap world as “Doc Todd”. (Doc, a nickname for all Navy Corpsman, who are the first to respond to Marines and soldiers injured on the battlefield.)He was a big bear of a guy, who instantly made you feel good. Our friendship lasted several years, and over the course of several interviews he shared the combat and post military experiences that shaped his acclaimed album “Combat Medicine”. Doc was the kind of guy I knew I could ask anything and get a real answer. In one of our interviews, we talked about how his service-related injuries sent him down the dark road to addiction … something he shared openly on his first hit single, “Not Alone”.IN one interview from 2019 he talked more about his single, “Not Alone” and how it drew interest from Diet Coke who made him a central part of their promotional campaign focused on mental health.Doc Todd's 2019 album Strange Pictures took another angle at improving our collective mental health though art, photography and music. But rather than focusing on just those struggling, his follow up hit single “Feels Good” was a summer anthem, that reminded vets and non-vets alike, to seek joy in our daily lives. Doc Todd shared his talents and his struggles. He made people smile, groove and his gifted soul touched millions.RIP my brother.Find Doc Todd's music on YouTube and everywhere you get music.https://www.youtube.com/@doctodd9285/videosTo reach Phil Briggs, Host, CBS Eye on Veterans: phil@connectingvets.comFollow on Twitter:@philbriggsVet @eyeonveteransSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

In this months episode, we continue the theme of the IMechE engineering challenges focusing on the unmanned aerial system or UAS Challenge. The event is held in mid-July at the British Model Flying Association's national centre, Buckminster. This event sees teams of university students design, build, test and fly an unmanned aircraft system scoring points across these different segments to win the competition. So, while Helen was busy preparing for our live Formula Student podcast, the Institution's Young Members were out recording the highs and lows at UAS. The University of Surrey were crowned grand champions this year, with an impressive combination of scoring across their reports and autonomous flights during the event, even recovering from a crash to have a fourth attempt at the release of the AirDropBox system. Loughborough University only just missed out on the top spot due to a rather terminal crash, but they did manage to scoop up the majority of awards in Innovation, Design, Safety, and Operational Supportability. There was also a virtual competition where teams could submit their designs online in lieu of them being able to attend in person. This enabled international teams to compete and gain recognition for their work despite Covid restrictions. Teams from Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Greece secured some of these virtual competition awards with India's Team WRise from the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies in first place. Stephen McLaughlin, YMB aerospace division representative and one of the UAS judges was on site, to talk with Paul Lloyd, Chair of the UAS Challenge, Phil Briggs, from QinetiQ one of the event sponsors, Kristina Lindon UAS project manager and one of the Imperial College London team members.
