This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes turn up the heat with "Backdraft", Ron Howard's 1991 firefighter thriller starring Kurt Russell, William Baldwin, Robert De Niro, and Donald Sutherland.Both Mike Butler and Mike Field are big fans of the film, particularly its performances and incredible practical fire effects. Butler singles out Kurt Russell and Donald Sutherland, while Field goes even further and unapologetically LOVES the movie.There are still a few story beats and character decisions that keep Butler from loving "Backdraft" quite as much as Field does. Field agrees that those problems are there, but for him they do little to diminish everything the movie gets right.The biggest standout for both Mikes is the filmmaking itself. The fire feels genuinely dangerous because so much of what appears on screen was accomplished practically, with enormous sets, real flames, and performers doing much of their own stunt work. The result gives "Backdraft" a physicality and sense of danger that is incredibly difficult to fake.That leads to a larger discussion about whether a movie like this could even look as convincing if it were made today. Thirty-five years later, a remake would almost certainly rely far more heavily on green screen and CGI, but would that actually make the fire look better? For Butler and Field, "Backdraft" is a great example of why practical filmmaking can still produce images that modern technology struggles to replicate.Flawed in places but spectacular where it counts, "Backdraft" remains a thrilling piece of early '90s filmmaking and a reminder that sometimes the best special effect is simply putting the camera in front of the real thing.What are some other great fire fighter films? This was also the all-time best opening for the 30-year-old franchise. Disclosure Day took second place this weekend, though Toy Story practically beat its global take in the states alone, and Obsession and Backrooms continue their strong streaks coming in at third and fourth respectively.Universal and Blumhouse's Atomic Monster are jumping on the Curry Barker bandwagon having acquired the young director's third film in a reported eight figure deal. While Universal has been backing Barker, both Obsession and his upcoming film Anything But Ghosts are coming from Focus Features. Blumhouse has produced those same films, but this new move puts the horror powerhouse in a stronger position for film development. To tag onto the box office talk and remind you, Obsession was made for $750,000 and has now made more than $300 million worldwide - making it a tantalizing prospect for Blumhouse.Netflix has opted not to proceed with a second season of The Boroughs, a sci-fi TV series executive produced by Stranger Things creators The Duffer Brothers. From 2018 to 2022, Nate served as the first CEO of World Central Kitchen (WCK), leading its transformation from a small operation with under $1 million in revenue to a global humanitarian powerhouse raising $500 million annually. Following his time at WCK, Nate served two years as Special Advisor on Ukraine for the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. Send us Fan MailSeason 17 of TGTPTU calls a wrap on its third of four directors in its 4x4 this week with Ron Howard's THE DA VINCI CODE (2006).   Starring Tom Hanks, father of musician and male model Chet Hanks but also known for leading roles in such earlier Howard films not covered on this podcast as Splash (1984) and Apollo 13 (1995), with a grotesque haircut as supersleuth symbiologist Robert Langdon from Dan Brown's 2003 best-selling page-turner of the same name, the movie is a bunch of nonsense that got some Catholics upset for suggesting Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the disputed son of a disputed desert deity, had children, likely through consensual intercourse unlike the legend of his siring. Howard's The Da Vinci Code also has great French actors used poorly in this flick mostly set in France and at least one Jellicle cat, one Sony Spiderman villain, and one Avenger (MCU, not BBC) actor of British lineage to help out the American Langdon in his quest for an ultimate truth that could rock the world to its core assuming it's not flat (see Revelation 7:1 and Isaiah 11:12, ya heathens).   Holy host Ryan goes above and beyond in his research for this ep; the son Jack passes the season's assignment; the father Ken is unimpressed by the chase scenes; and Doubting Thomas in real time processes that the female lead is the same actress as the titular Amélie (2001).  If you like anagrams and unstimulating action sequences, this might be the movie for you.    Skcus eivom siht.   P.S. That friend's plot summary of extraterrestrials passing in human skinsuits abducting retirement home residents after seducing them with youthful lives of breakdancing and sexual congress does sound terrifying, but the film filters much of this through an all-star cast of Golden Age Hollywood actors (including this film's Oscar-winning Best Supporting Actor Don Ameche and his four-out-of-four-star gams) and the youthful innocence of child actor Barret Oliver from The NeverEnding Story (1984) and the titular Daryl in D.A.R.Y.L. (1985). The flick also has a mid-twenties Steve Guttenberg in short shorts. Who likes the Gute in short shorts? This week Mea Culpa welcomes the legendary actor, comedian, director, and producer Henry Winkler. Best known for his iconic turn as “The Fonze” on Happy Days and more recently for his Emmy-nominated role on the hit comedy “Barry”, playing beloved acting teacher Gene Cousineau. And before that, he was a staple on “Arrested Development”, “Hank Zipzer” and Winkler even appeared as himself on “Bojack Horseman”. All told, Winkler's accolades include a Primetime Emmy, two Daytime Emmys, two Golden Globes, and a Critics Choice Award. Not bad. He's a Yale “School of Drama” Grad and his acting career spans 6 decades. He has performed in both dramatic and comedic roles, in film television, and on stage. Though one might say he is the quintessential character actor. He's done several pictures with his buddy Adam Sandler including, “Little Nicky” and “Don't Mess with the Zohan” and has continued to collaborate with his “Happy Day”s cohort, Ron Howard. Journalist Michael Schneider said recently, that "the rumors are true," Winkler is "one of the nicest, most genuine men in all of Hollywood.” Michael and Henry Winkler talk about their family life, their careers, and of course politics.
