Episode Notes S7E7 -- Join us as we chat with Author & Spiritualist Jeff Brown. He'll be in the house telling tales from his newest book "Danger in Trudeau's Kitchen: Inside Canada's Most Famous Front Door" to Soulshaping Institute and beyond. Jeff Brown is a breakthrough voice in the self-help/spirituality field, and the author of nine popular books including Soulshaping: A Journey of Self-Creation, Ascending with Both Feet on the Ground, Love It Forward, and Where is God in all of This? A Conversation. He is a criminal lawyer, psychotherapist and founder of Soulshaping Institute. In 2017, Self-help Author Jeff Brown innocently accepted an invitation from Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, the former Canadian Prime Minister's wife, to help her write an article that advanced a campaign for gender equality in Canada. What happened instead was a four-year whirlwind of digital surveillance, political pressure, and personal transformation which reshaped his understanding of trust, truth and freedom. "Tyranny always masquerades as benevolence," warns Mr. Brown as he shows how an ordinary citizen can become the target of not only the political world— but of a hidden empire of covert systems, governmental agencies, and the corporations that consumers depend on every day. The book is both a warning and a call to action—a deeply researched, first-hand revelation of the new frontiers of political influence in the digital age. This podcast is powered by Pinecast.

480: Undoing the Deception of Self-Creation and Gender Ideology. Abdu Murray Exposes How We've Taken Empathy Too Far, The Syrupy "Sloganeering" of the Church, The Liabilities of Our Post-Truth Culture, and Why Identity is a Paper-Thin Idea

We are living through a crisis of clarity. In the name of empathy, we have untethered compassion from truth, traded moral courage for slogans, and reduced identity to something endlessly self-constructed. The result is not freedom, but confusion, where words lose meaning, conviction is treated as cruelty, and the church often responds with language that sounds kind but forms no one. This week on Win Today, apologist and author Abdu Murray joins me for a sober, unflinching conversation about self-creation, gender ideology, and the liabilities of a post-truth culture. We examine how empathy becomes destructive when it is severed from reality, why identity collapses when it is built on feelings alone, and how the church's reliance on syrupy slogans leaves believers ill-equipped to engage the moment with wisdom and courage. This isn't reactionary, it's diagnostic. If you sense the ground shifting beneath basic definitions of personhood, truth, and meaning, this episode offers clarity without cruelty and conviction without caricature. Guest Bio Abdu Murray is an author, speaker, and apologist who explores the intellectual credibility of the Christian faith in a post-truth world. With a background in law and years of experience engaging questions of identity, meaning, and worldview, Abdu is widely respected for his clarity, charity, and ability to address complex cultural issues with reasoned conviction. What if our memories weren't fixed, but flexible? And what if the key to understanding fear, emotion, and consciousness lies in how the brain constantly reshapes experience? In this episode of Mind-Body Solution, Dr Tevin Naidu speaks with Prof Daniela Schiller, a world-renowned neuroscientist, and director of the Laboratory of Affective Neuroscience at Mount Sinai. Prof Schiller's groundbreaking work explores how we form, change, and even reimagine emotional memories, from the neuroscience of fear to the dynamic nature of consciousness and identity. In this 3-part course, we will explore key ideas about teshuvah, repentance, in Rabbi Joseph Soloveitchik's theology. Taking his lectures in On Repentance as our jumping off point, we will weave them together with texts from across his writings to see the full picture of his ideas. Class 1: Be Your Own Messiah: Teshuvah as Self-Creation and Self-Redemption Teshuvah = Freedom. But how? And why? This enigmatic equation sets Rav Soloveitchik off on a journey, from the classic texts of the Rambam to modern conceptions of time and the self. Rejecting forms of teshuvah based on feeling bad about the past, he describes a model of teshuvah that is future-oriented and activist in nature. Teshuvah, Rav Soloveitchik argues, is key to freeing ourselves from a deterministic, deadening sense of time, and opening up revolutionary new possibilities in our lives. Class 2: Waking Up from Modernity: Teshuvah as Self-Awareness and Realism How do we realize that we need to do teshuvah? How do we realize we need to change without yet having changed? For Rav Soloveitchik, this problem lies at the heart of what it means to be a Jew in the modern era. Modernity has brought many blessings on both the Jews and the world as a whole, but it has also brought on numerous catastrophes. In this class, we will see how the problem of “waking up” from our routine ways of thinking about ourselves and the world—being self-critical and realistic—is key to avoiding the sins and idolatries inherent to human potential. Class 3: Spiritual Exile and Political Redemption: Teshuvah Beyond the Individual Teshuvah is often thought of as a spiritual endeavor of the individual Jew. There is another form of teshuvah, however: the teshuvah of the collective. Starting from the laws of communal sacrifices which atone for communal sin, Rav Soloveitchik depicts sin, exile, and redemption as a historical drama culminating in but—not exhausted by—a Jewish state. Imagining the Jewish people as a single being—an organic whole—he says that teshuvah must go beyond the actions of individuals and be realized in the life of the nation. On the national level, sin alienates us from our national self and leads to exile from the land, and redemption will mean returning to ourselves and to our land. This means a return to Jewish sovereignty, but also to a critical distance from it: sovereignty can never become all of what it means to be Jewish.

In this episode I talk aboutPeter Gray and his book Free to Learn - Why unleasing the instinc to play will make our children happier, more self-reliant, and better students for life.We talk about how play is learning. how we today think about play as something which is dont to children. Not something they actively participate and even lead. for 10.000 years + kids have been learning all by themselves - THROUGH PLAYKids play themselve into useful members of their communities. When we play we are FREE in a way we arent in other aspects of life.Chimpanzees learn by looking, not by being taught. The amount of things infants needs to learn is almost insurmountablePlayfully participating in life gets imbedded in us and helps us emotionally able to deal with life.WIthout playing in childhood you can get difficulties in your emotional connections with others as an adult. ANd many other problems become more prevalent.Kids has the strongest desire to play because the have the most to learn.Playful aproaches to the world affords more possibilites. It increases your degrees of freedom. The colonialisation of childhood by others.Abusing play as a tool for teaching. BUT play needs to be self motivated. It needs to be voluntary.Adults think play is useful only when it can be harnessed to teach something from the decided upon by adults from the curriculum.Learning happens INSIDE the school and play outside. This is a subtle indoctrination. The serious that happens inside the classroom is of value. The time wasting play happens outside in recess.Play is learning as nature intended it for us. Driven by enthusiasm and not to do well on a standardized test.Playing teaches each of us how to be ourselves! It shows us who we are! Learning is not JUST what happens in schools.its not something you buys. Its what you do in the process of developing yourself as a human being.Biology does not give us built in answers to what it means to be a human. It has given a method to aquire answers. This method is play. This way of being in the world is HOW evolution has equiped us to find ourselves and our WAY.Quote from the manuscript:Genes and biology isn't giving us readymade answers hardwired to solve the difficulties of becoming and staying human. Instead of giving us answers which, as all answers, can be right or wrong, or useful or useless, nature has given us a process to aquire answers. Evolution gave us a method, or an approach to generate answers, not individual answers. This process is play. Anonymity and self creation: Laurie Taylor talks to Thomas DeGloma, Associate Professor of Sociology at Hunter College and the Graduate Center, City University of New York, about hidden identities and how and why we use anonymity, for good or ill. He explores a wide range of historical and contemporary cases, from the Ku Klux Klan to 'Dr H' the psychiatrist who disguised his identity in a meeting which changed his profession's regressive attitudes towards homosexuality. In recent years, anonymity has featured widely in the political and social landscape: from the pseudonymous artist, Banksy, to Hackers Anonymous and QAnon. What is anonymity, and why, under various circumstances, do individuals act anonymously? How do individuals use it, and, in some situations, how is it imposed on them? Also, Tara Isabella Burton, Visiting Fellow at George Mason University's Mercatus Center, on the crafting of public personae, from Beau Brummell to the Kardashians. She finds the trend for personal branding, amongst ordinary people as well as celebrities, originated with the idea that we could shape our own destiny, once the power of the church had waned. What are the connections between the Renaissance genius and the Regency dandy, the Hollywood 'IT' girl and Reality TV star? Might there be social costs to seeing self-determination as the fundamental element of human life?Producer: Jayne Egerton

This week, historian and author Sterling L. Bland Jr. discusses his book In the Shadow of Invisibility: Ralph Ellison and the Promise of American Democracy. This conversation originally took place October 15, 2023 and was recorded live at the American Writers Museum. This episode is presented in conjunction with the AWM's ongoing special exhibit Dark Testament: A Century of Black Writers on Justice, on display now. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOME About In the Shadow of Invisibility: With In the Shadow of Invisibility, Sterling Lecater Bland Jr. offers a long-overdue reconsideration of Ralph Ellison, examining the trajectory of his intellectual thought in relation to its resonances in twenty-first-century American culture. Bland charts Ellison's evolving attitudes on several central topics including democracy, race, identity, social community, place, and political expression. This compelling new exploration of Ellison's legacy stresses the perpetual need to reexamine the intersections of race, literature, and American culture, with particular attention to how the democratic principle has grown increasingly urgent in the nation's ongoing, and often contentious, conversations about race. Arguing that Ellison saw racial and social identity as being inseparable from the nation's past and its complicated history of racial anxiety, In the Shadow of Invisibility traces the growth and transformation of Ellison's ideas across his life and work, from his early apprentice writing that culminated in his groundbreaking first novel, Invisible Man, through the posthumous publication of his unfinished second novel, Three Days before the Shooting. Focused on his mythic vision of the promise of America, this book firmly situates Ellison in the sociopolitical environments from which his ideas arose, with close consideration of his published writings, including his influential essays on literature and jazz, as well as his working notes and correspondence. Bland foregrounds Ellison's thinking on the responsibilities of Black writers to examine democratic ideals, the legacies of slavery and Jim Crow, and the impacts of civil rights movements. Interweaving biography, history, and literary criticism, and drawing from extensive archival research, In the Shadow of Invisibility reveals the extent to which Ellison's work exposes the contradictions inherent in American culture, arguing anew for the importance and immediacy of his writings in the broader context of American intellectual thought. STERLING LECATER BLAND JR. is professor of English, African American studies, and American studies at Rutgers University-Newark. He is the author of Voices of the Fugitives: Runaway Slave Stories and Their Fictions of Self-Creation and the editor of Understanding 19th-Century Slave Narratives and the three-volume African American Slave Narratives: An Anthology.

Could there really be a straight line between the self-made person of talent and the branded personality made famous by reality TV and the internet? In Self-Made: Creating Our Identities from Da Vinci to the Kardashians (https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/tara-isabella-burton/self-made/9781541789012/?lens=publicaffairs), Tara Isabella Burton shows how the curating of an “authentic” self so characteristic of today is in fact rooted in a deep human instinct that values the uniqueness of each individual. She sits down with host Richard Aldous to discuss the latest of her books that peer into the soul of contemporary society with an eye to history, culture, theology, and economics.

There's a beautiful map in my office that, to be honest, is there because we didn't really have anywhere in the house to put it. It's a bit peculiar. It's obviously hand-drawn and ancient, with vivid color and great detail. It looks kind of like a Lord of the Rings map. The labels all use our same alphabet, but the accent marks and strange words show that it's clearly in a different language.  When people visit my office, the more curious of them look at the map expecting to be able to figure it out. It usually starts with them saying, "Oooh, cool map. Don't tell me where it is." "OK," I say. "Let me know if you need a hint." Then their eyes scan it, seeing somewhat familiar features but still unable to lock it in. Almost without exception people need the hint, and after I tell them, everything clicks. "North is down," I say. Cue the sigh of dawning realization and the recognition of Italy's upside-down boot and the Iberian peninsula sticking up like a flag in the Atlantic. It's called the Veltkarte Des Idrisi (the "Worldmap of Idrisi") and, as Idrisi was a Muslim scholar in the 1100's, is centered on the Middle East but with an upside-down orientation. The fear of the Lord is the "North is down" of the Proverbs. Everything in it and in its understanding of life is centered on the fear of the Lord. We will see that, contrary to FDR's inaugural address, the real fear isn't fear itself but fear divorced from its proper target—the Lord, of whom proper fear becomes trust. North is down.

Tara Isabella Burton's new book, "Self-Made: Creating Our Identities from Da Vinci to the Kardashians" explores the western concept of the self-made person. Hollywood celebrity culture and internet influencers are examined. Burton argues that people still believe in God, but have relocated the divine to within themselves. Christ offers a different perspective that has the advantage of being real and true. We bear his yoke or we are lost. Increasingly, Americans are wandering into chaos, but we don't have to. Originally from Kansas City, Kansas, Dee Wallace has worked as an author, teacher, dancer, and actress in film, television, and stage for over 40 years. Her career began in New York, where she studied with famous acting legend Uta Hagen before moving to Los Angeles, where she found her mentor, Charles Conrad. Dee is a true tour de force in the industry, working with countless producers and directors and some of Hollywood's biggest names, including Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Wes Craven, Joe Dante, Lewis Teague, Stephen King, Blake Edwards, and Rob Zombie. Her many film credits include “The Hills Have Eyes,” “The Howling,” “Cujo,” “Secret Admirer,” “The Frighteners,” “10” and of course, her role as Mary in Steven Spielberg's “E.T., The Extraterrestrial.” With over 280 TV movie and film credits on her resume, Dee Wallace is quite possibly the most active woman in entertainment. Dee's important message to the world is: Love yourself beyond anyone or anything else. Love yourself so much that you can't do anything that doesn't make you love yourself more. She began her channeled healing work over twenty years ago when she dropped to her knees after her husband's sudden death and asked for a way we could “heal ourselves.” Seconds later, she received her first message: use the light within you to heal yourself. She has passionately been teaching the art of self-creation ever since. Dee is a strong advocate for accepting (at an early age) our own magnificence and power in a positive, loving way. Her most recent book, “Born,” expands the concepts of Law of Attraction exponentially and simplifies everything you think you know about the power of Self-Creation. “Born” is a powerful book about how Spirituality, Brain Science, and Religion teach the same principles and how you can easily use them to create your life. She offers monthly webinars on a variety of creation subjects. Dee also conducts private sessions from her home in Woodland Hills, California via phone and in person. As a much sought after speaker, Dee has spoken at numerous national and international venues, appeared on every major news and talk show, and been featured on E! True Hollywood Stories and Oprah.
