Provide your feedback here. Anonymously send me a text message. In this episode, Mike discusses R. v. Alexander, 2025 ONSC 57 where police tried to stop a vehicle for a traffic related reason. The driver — along with the vehicle's passenger — fled from the attempted stop and then ran from the vehicle only to be apprehended nearby after a foot chase. The police searched the car and later — using a K9 — found a loaded handgun under a bush not far from where the driver was arrested. The defence lawyer alleged police action was tainted by racial profiling — the vehicle had been targeted because its occupants were young, black males driving late at night. Was this a valid claim? Was searching the vehicle incident to arrest for the offence of flight from police justified? Or did searching it exceed the scope of the common law power? Thanks for listening! Tyndall researcher awarded €1.58 million from the renowned funding body, European Research Council (ERC), to support his groundbreaking research. IPIC, the SFI Centre for Photonics based at Tyndall National Institute (a research flagship of University College Cork), is pleased to announce that Dr Sanathana Konugolu Venkata Sekar has been awarded a European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant. The grant, worth €1.58m, will support Dr Konugolu Venkata Sekar's groundbreaking research project NOBIAS: "Novel diffuse Optical method to combat skin colour bias in non-invasive optical biomarker sensing devices". Skin colour bias in optical healthcare devices affects 2.2 billion people of colour worldwide. Dr Konugolu's project, NOBIAS, aims to develop a revolutionary Time Domain Diffuse Optical Spectroscopy (TDDOS) method to eliminate colour bias, motion artefacts and inaccuracies in optical biomarker devices such as pulse oximeters (used to measure oxygen levels in blood) and smartwatches. This pioneering technology will address the critical need for more accurate and equitable medical diagnostics by focusing on the influence of skin pigmentation, variations in skin layer thickness, and composition across different ethnicities. The goal is to create a bias-free foundation for optical biomarker assessments that will enable a new era of accurate optical biomarker sensors for fitness and clinical bedside monitors. The prestigious ERC Starting Grants, awarded by Europe's leading research funding body, are designed to support emerging research leaders in building their independent teams and conducting pioneering research with the potential for significant global impact. Speaking about his work, Dr Konugolu explains: "My goal with the NOBIAS project is to lay the foundation for the world's first bias-free and accurate optical biomarker sensing device, and our hope is that its legacy will be the gold standard for bias-free clinical and personal biomarkers sensing". Professor Paul Townsend, Head of Photonics, Tyndall and Director of IPIC, said: "Dr Konugolu has consistently impressed me with his passion and commitment to the generation of new ideas and knowledge, as well as his ability to commercialise those ideas to realise new medical technologies that will benefit society in the future. This significant award confirms his outstanding potential as a world-leading biophotonics researcher, and I am confident the project will lead to new innovations that will be very impactful for the field". Welcoming the news, Martin O'Connell, EU Programme Manager at IPIC, said: "ERC grants are among the most prestigious of any funding body worldwide, and the successful award is a testament to the research excellence consistently on display on an ongoing basis in IPIC."

Christadelphians face racism within their community, including social exclusion, racist remarks, stereotypes, and biased interpretations of Bible verses. Addressing these challenges requires humility: admitting mistakes, educating oneself, promoting diversity and representation, supporting businesses run by people of color, and consciously challenging racist attitudes and behaviors through specific actions in ecclesial activities, conversations, and personal life.

It's Fake News Friday on the Candice Malcolm Show! Candice looks at the latest developing fake news story line in the legacy media, which is that Pierre Poilievre must be racist because he appeals to too many “white people.” Rather than critiquing conservatives on substance, lazy journalists would much rather simply hurl insults because apparently having “white people” at your rally is a bad thing. One substantive critique of Poilievre did come from the CBC – where “experts say” that contrary to Poilievre's critique of government borrowing and printing of money, the real cause of inflation has little to do with government. “Government spending is one of many factors pushing prices up — but it's a relatively modest one,” said one left-wing economist defending Trudeau. “It really doesn't matter what Canada's government spends,” said another. You can't make this stuff up. Another CBC article goes even further in defending the Trudeau government, telling us that the “pick-up truck tax doesn't exist” – this despite the tax being listed in a government report released by Trudeau's Environment Minister. The CBC may not understand basic math, economics, civics or how laws are passed, but they do understand where their bread is buttered: they exist for the sole purpose of defending Justin Trudeau. Chan is an artist and a friend. She is 100% Korean in terms of nationality but has at times distanced herself from this identity. Her friends call her a 외국인 (foreigner) but she identifies as a TCK (third culture kid). She has often tried to look different from other people and loves standing out, avoiding clichés and stereotypes where possible. In Korea she has received lots of comments on her tanned skin and found it difficult to find cosmetics that suit her. Looking forward, she wants to be in a place where she is treated equally, regardless of social position. She talks about the vibe and aura emitted by other TCKs, the mutual understanding and the open body language that results. She has found a great sense of community in touch rugby. She closes our chat with hopes that TCKs can be proud of who they are and seeks to challenge the negative portrayal of TCKs having privileges from studying abroad and receiving easier access to the country's top universities. She wants to reduce alienation. And she hopes people will stop asking TCKs to speak English as a party trick. But, on top of all this, she has a positive outlook for the future.

The Dark Is Beautiful campaign was started in 2009, by Women Of Worth, a non-profit based in India, as an awareness and advocacy campaign to fight colourism. It seeks to draw attention to the unjust effects of skin colour bias, shaped by societal attitudes and reinforced by media messages that are corroding the self-worth of countless people, young and old. In the 10 years since its inception, the Dark Is Beautiful campaign has gained international recognition and garnered support from celebrities and recognition and mention in various major media publications in India and around the world. Kavitha Emmanuel launched the DISB campaign on 2009 with a passion to address the issue of colourism in India . She was challenged by the lack of voice for those traumatized by skin colour discrimination. She recognised the need for a platform for people to connect, express and challenge this toxic belief that was stripping people of their true sense of worth. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gmbwithkay/message

Today, Trishna is an up and coming singer, actress, and model located in Los Angeles, CA - having worked on feature films, major network television series, model campaigns, as well as writing her own music and developing her own television series. Did you know that neither Carl Linnaeus nor Charles Darwin placed people in a power hierarchy? Philosophers David Hume and Immanuel Kant had definite racist views. Many black people are asking themselves this question. What is it about melanated skin that is making black and brown skin a risk factor for getting the viral infection currently linked to the lockdowns! Listen to this! Melanin, the vital pigment found in all vertebrates, humans included is skin, hair, pupils/irises of eyes, inner ear, nipples and brain. Melanin has many protective functions: cutaneous melanin acts as a natural sunscreen without which the sun's UV rays can cause mutations in the DNA which can then lead to cancer. So, it protects us from the damaging solar UVA & UVB. Secondly, melanin is a potential candidate in melanoma (most aggressive skin cancer) treatment. Melanated, dark skin people have a lower rate of skin cancer due to the photo-protective quality of melanin (un-bleached black skin!). Another function of melanin - it acts as an antibiotic and free radical sink - natural helping agents in disease/infections. Now, in the UK, the department of health announced that this pigment melanin is a risk factor for getting Covid-19. They said if you are black you are at risk. What do you think?!

For episode 64 of Offline, host Alison Rice has an honest conversation with scientist, chartered ecologist and model, Zinnia Kumar. Zinnia grew up in Western Sydney in a low socio-economic area, and following some deeply impactful advice from her chemistry teacher, she applied herself within the public education system and became the first in her family to go to university. What was the advice? She told Zinnia that if she worked hard, she could be anything she wanted to be. Zinnia hasn’t looked back. An introvert who self-diagnosed and treated her own social phobia as a teenager, she now lives in London and is studying for a doctorate in colourism at Oxford University. A published scientist, Zinnia has focused her research on human attraction, examining beauty standards and ideals, and more recently, colourism — specifically the serious issue of skin colour stigma in South Asia. Recorded in April 2020, this honest conversation is an entry point to learning more about skin colour discrimination and representation. Zinnia also opens up about modelling, the racism she experienced from Australian agencies, the potentially life-saving reading she had with a palmist, why science and spirituality can co-exist and why she chooses to practice equanimity. Zinnia is fascinating and she’s a woman we can learn from.Follow Zinnia on InstagramFind out more about Zinnia MORE FROM OFFLINE AND ALISON RICE Become a student of Self StudyIf you’re interested in learning about True Self, conscious success and more, consider becoming a student of Self Study — a series of considered online courses. The highest ranked Māori MP in National's caucus at number 13 - Paula Bennett.
