0:20 there's a VHS tape here, that you may not be aware of, let's see if you're aware of it. A buddy of mine got it in the mid 80s. And it was called in car 956. Yeah, I'm pretty much aware of it. Yeah. Okay. Got it written down to her. Motor books International. That's right. Yeah. And, and he still has a VHS player. Yeah, only for that. Amazing. When we talk about that, it was the biggest seller ever of that time, for years. And it during that during the time of Porsche, because we did it during that good year of 1983, or 84. And ever, every, every event I go to, I would say, in the world, wherever I go, I will sign it. At least one copy of that even today. Even today, people come up there in the other end DVDs now. I mean, so when I, you know, I watched that. I mean, I couldn't know this friend of mine named Don, I couldn't. You can't be friends with him without watching it more than once. And your first gear, second gear, you know, you're, you're talking during this whole thing. And I'm watching the tape. And I'm actually like, shitting myself a little bit. Imagine I'm imagining being in the passenger seat. There were a few. I couldn't even imagine. It was. Well, I did I never sat in the fastest seat either. So I guess so remember, I did the voiceover live except for the Nurburgring. Because I couldn't remember the names of the corners. Obviously, there's 170 corners. And they're all in German, when you get lost 160 970. 6:15 No, I'm purely. I'm a (dealer) partner. And in Bentley, Naples, Bentley, and which is fantastic. And we have Porsche, Jaguar Land Rover, Aston Martin Rolls Royce 9:08 Italian Grand Prix in 19 1959 15:00 Derek talks about his fortune and gratitude. 18:33 And he (Jim Russell) sort of picked one day just picked me out and said, who was driving that car and I went, "Oh, Lord, he's gonna give me a shout at me". And so he said, you know, and he took me to pull me out away from the other eight, all the other drivers. So they were still listening, though right beside us, and you think you're gonna get removed or something? I thought it was gonna get a bullocking or something. 22:05 I was out winning races all over Europe in my third year. And that was at Ferrari my fourth. 23:08 there were a lot of people getting killed back then. Oh, yeah. 30% of the drivers died. Yeah. Did you think ever think about those statistics or, or not when you were there? Every night? Yeah. Oh, every night, the night before the race? Oh, yeah. I mean, you didn't know you didn't know whether you would make it back after the weekend. It sounds stupid. Because I'm not one of those sort of be. I'm not a daredevil. I'm not a guy that climb a tree or leap off of top board at the swimming pool. Oh, let somebody else do it first and see if it was safe before I did it. maybe that's why I became a good endurance driver because I calculated more. 27:54 Why can't he drive a stick shift? 31:14 I talk to everybody, not anybody. I mean, I talk to everybody if I can, if I can, if I got time, or they got time, or they want to. 36:11 Festival of Speed. Also. Yeah, I've done it every year. Yeah, man. I'm doing it this year. The Duke ...he wrote to me the other day and we have a speak on the phone every month or so. He's a good friend of mine. He lives at Goodwill. I live near it. 36:08 69 was the last year they ran. It was the year that Jackie walked across the track, got in his car last and won the race ...on the last lap. 39:03 (about races) "I certainly don't sit and watch it." 40:36 you should go to the US Open, you should go to Wimbledon, you should go to all the one off special events, because you don't have to like it. You just have to suck up that atmosphere. And LeMans certainly has something terribly unique about it. 42:30 Derek talks about setting the world speed record in a Bentley on a frozen lake between Sweden and Finland. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzhE8w8oC-Y

Show #881 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 2nd September 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Welcome to a new PATREON PARTNER RAJEEV NARAYAN Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. LUCID MOTORS CLAIMS ITS FIRST EV COVERS A QUARTER MILE IN 9.9 SECONDS "One week ahead of its big reveal event, Lucid Motors is ready to brag about how fast its all-electric luxury sedan is. In a video shared today, Lucid Motors shows its Lucid Air covering a quarter mile of racetrack in just 9.9 seconds. According to the company, the EV is “the world’s quickest production sedan.”" writes Engadget: "Lucid Air’s 1,080-horsepower powertrain allows the vehicle to reach 60 MPH in under 2.5 seconds, Autoblog points out. Lucid explained today that the EV comes with two electric drive units. Each packs over 650 horsepower and is small enough to fit inside a standard airplane carry-on." https://www.engadget.com/lucid-motors-air-ev-quarter-mile-99-seconds-142151709.html NISSAN DELIVERED ITS 500,000TH LEAF "Nissan celebrates today the delivery of 500,000th LEAF (since December 2010) to a customer in Norway - one of the biggest markets for the LEAF. Since there is no press release yet, let's take a look at Bjorn Nyland's report. With about 44,000 sales, Norway took almost 9% of the total LEAF volume, and we are aware that thousands of more used LEAFs were imported to Norway, so there might now be well over 10% of all LEAFs ever made located somewhere in Norway." says InsideEVs: "Nissan LEAF was the all-time #1 for a long time, even through 2019/2020, when LEAF was at about 450,000. Then, Model 3 overtook LEAF and it will not change, as the Model 3 is selling at a level higher" https://insideevs.com/news/442006/nissan-leaf-500000th-delivered TESLA’S BATTERY STRATEGY HAS “NO ADVANTAGE,” FORD CEO SAYS "Tesla’s battery strategy will not be adopted by legacy automotive company Ford, because Jim Hackett, the company’s CEO, says there is “no advantage” in migrating capital into owning a cell manufacturing facility. During Ford’s Q2 2020 Earnings Call in late July, Morgan Stanley’s Adam Jonas asked about the company’s strategy to produce EV batteries in-house, as opposed to sourcing the cells from third-party companies like Panasonic and LG Chem." picks up TEslarati: "Hackett, who elected to retire from his post as head of Ford earlier this year, stated that his team did a “deep dive” on whether it was advantageous to create its own battery cells. It proved not to be advantageous for Ford. Instead, the company will continue to go the path that it is now, which requires sourcing batteries from third-party suppliers instead of researching and improving on cells within the company’s facilities across the world." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-battery-strategy-ford-no-advantage/ TESLA (TSLA) ANNOUNCES $5 BILLION CAPITAL RAISE "Tesla (TSLA) today announced a $5 billion capital raise to take advantage of the stock price’s meteoric rise. While Tesla CEO Elon Musk previously said that the company wasn’t interested in a new capital raise as it believed it was capable to finance its ambitious growth through its operations, it looks like they couldn’t resist following the stock price increase" reports Electrek today: "It’s Tesla’s second capital raise in 2020. The automaker raised $2 billion in February. Like with the last capital raise, Tesla doesn’t specify any use of the proceed other than “strengthening the balance sheet”. The sale of $5 billion new shares is going to put some pressure on the incredible run of Tesla’s stock price over the last month and it is already feeling the effect." https://electrek.co/2020/09/01/tesla-tsla-5-billion-capital-raise/ NEW VOLKSWAGEN ID 3: FIRST EXAMPLES OF EV HIT BRITISH SHORES "Volkswagen's pivotal EV, the ID 3, has finally reached British shores as the first customer examples roll off the ship at Grimsby port. Earmarked for customers that pre-booked First Edition examples earlier this year, the fully-loaded models will be delivered over the next month. Volkswagen claims that the entire production and delivery process is carbon neutral, even including the shipping" says James Atwood at Autocar: "The limited-run First Edition models are priced from £38,880 and were offered only to people who previously placed a £750 deposit. First Edition versions of the ID 3 will feature the mid-size 'Pro' battery offering a claimed range of 260 miles. General sales of the ID 3 are due to begin in the UK in the coming weeks, and the model will eventually be offered in seven main variants, with three different battery capacities and two power outputs. The first machines that have arrived in Britain will be without some of the App Connect, but those who take delivery of them will be given membership of a 'First Movers' club, which will include an eventual software update to install the software. Those leasing cars also won't pay any rates for the first three months." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-volkswagen-id-3-first-examples-ev-hit-british-shores EVS AND HYBRIDS GET AN EXTENSION TO MEET US NOISE-MAKING REQUIREMENTS " Automakers will get at least six more months to meet new federal requirements for noise-making devices on electric cars and hybrids, Reuters reported Friday. The extension is being granted due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The so-called "quiet car" rule requires electrified vehicles to emit noises at speeds up to 18.6 mph as a warning to pedestrians and cyclists. Lack of exhaust noise makes cars harder to hear at these speeds, but tire noise, wind buffeting, and other sounds pick up at higher speeds, regulators have said." says Green Car Repotrs. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1129448_evs-and-hybrids-get-an-extension-to-meet-us-noise-making-requirements VOLKSWAGEN ID.R ELECTRIC RACE CAR RETURNS TO GOODWOOD Welcome back, Volkswagen ID.R! 411 days after the record-breaking drive up Tianmen Mountain in China, the fully-electric race car returns to action at Goodwood SpeedWeek (16.–18.10.2020). After the coronavirus pandemic caused the cancellation of both the Goodwood Festival of Speed (FoS) and the Goodwood Revival, the organisers have launched a new event: Goodwood SpeedWeek, at which historic race cars meet present vehicles and visions of the future. As the three-day automotive festival will take place behind closed doors, there will be extensive digital reporting, including multiple livestreams. Having taken victory at the Festival of Speed for the past two years with the 500-kW (680-PS) ID.R, Volkswagen Motorsport travels to the south of England with a new challenge: SpeedWeek is not taking place on Goodwood Hill, but at the 3.809-kilometre Goodwood Motor Circuit. NORWAY IN AUGUST — OVER 70% EV MARKET SHARE AND HEADING HIGHER "Clean transport transition leader Norway hit a huge 70.2% plugin passenger vehicle market share in August, up from 49% a year ago. Pure battery electrics alone took 53% of the market. September is already showing signs of being a record breaking month with the Tesla Model 3, VW ID.3, and Polestar 2 all showing up in volume." according to Dr Max Holland in CleanTechnica: "The top selling BEVs in August were the mostly the recent usual suspects, but the Polestar 2 started it’s deliveries in earnest, and jumped in to a very creditable #4 spot. The Mercedes Benz EQC has showed up in decent numbers again in August, as it did in July" https://cleantechnica.com/2020/09/02/norway-in-august-over-70-ev-market-share-and-heading-higher/ You can listen to all 880 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. Mix) - Simple Minds Notes and other random things: First, apologies to Kon Kan fans. I had fully intended to include a remix of "I Beg Your Pardon" in this episode. But I didn't. Why? Well, I've found that early Sunday mornings are about the most opportune time for me to record podcasts now - really early. And in my half-awake, half-asleep state I cued up the wrong tune. In all my years of DJ-ing/podcasting, I can't ever recall cuing up a song I had no intention of using. It's funny, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out why the beats wouldn't match and it wasn't until 3 or so minutes later that I realized I was cuing up the wrong tune. At that point, I didn't have enough time to switch to a different song, so I just went with it. So, for all you Pet Shop Boys fans out there, you get two PSB tunes in this podcast with only a single song separating them. It works, I suppose, but I generally prefer to use only one song per artist in each 'cast. I guess there's a first time for everything, right? Speaking of a first time for everything, after 45 episodes, Bomb The Bass finally appears in song form and not in a production or remix vein. I alluded to "Beat Dis" in episode #41 as CRC featured the Bomb The Bass Mix of Depeche Mode's song "Strangelove" as the lead-off track. One of the early dance tracks to incorporate sampling into the mix, "Beat Dis" was the first single from Bomb The Bass (aka Tim Simenon) and had upwards of 72 samples contained within. Along with ground-breaking tracks, "Pump Up the Volume" by MARRS and "Theme from S'Express" by S'Express, "Beat Dis" heralded the arrival of sampling as a viable artform. The track was huge in Europe, reaching #2 on the UK Singles Chart. It also peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play Chart for one solitary week, marking the only charted hit for Bomb The Bass in the United States. I have a real soft spot for the track I'd like to mention next. The band is T42 and the track is "Don't Let My Love". These guys were on the upswing and on the cusp of breaking out in a big way from the Dallas-Ft.Worth market during my time there in the early 90s. Orignally a duo consisting of Jay Gillian and Jimron Goff, vocalist Will Loconto supplanted Goff as the lead singer in 1989. After the release of a cassette EP (remember those?) called Hot On Top, they gained steady airplay on 94.5 The Edge radio station, which was home to all the great alternative bands back in the day. One of my many record store haunts back then, Oak Lawn Records picked up the band for a 12" single of "Don't Let My Love", which did well enough to attract the attention of Columbia Records, who signed the group. They released the full-length album, Intruder, in 1992, which was produced by Paul Robb from Information Society. It's hard not to hear the similarities to Information Society on "Don't Let My Love" and other songs on the album as well. In an ironic twist, Loconto quit the band in 1993, setting out to work with Information Society. While Gillian brought in other musicians to keep the T42 fires burning, the band's star faded and the group melted wistfully into the retro ether. Still, they left behind some tasty pop sugar for our consumption, even doing a very respectable cover of "Let Me Go" by Heaven 17. If you're into upbeat electro-pop, Intruder is definitely worth a listen. And if you're from the DFW area, the album and this song should be a reminder of an excellent time when the DFW local music scene was king. Taken from his 1982 album of the same name, Peter Godwin's "Images In Heaven" resembles more of a cult classic than a bonafide mega-hit. Formerly a member of the short-lived glam rock band Metro, along with Duncan Browne and Sean Lyons, Godwin is probably best remembered for his solo effort, "Images In Heaven", though you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone outside of devout new wave lovers who are very familiar with the song. David Bowie may argue the "best-remembered" point, as Metro's song "Criminal World" made enough of an impression on Mr. Stardust to induce a cover tune. Still, outside of 1983's Correspondence album and a Best Of compilation released in 1998 on Oglio Records, Godwin's scant musical output has always left new wave junkies wishing for something more. Something more ... also the sentiment I feel about Seven Red Seven. Chicago natives and band mates, Mitchell Adrian and David Michael, formed the group in the early 90s and had only a couple of releases issued to minor success before going on to production work for other musicians. However, their time together as a band produced one of the more under-rated and under-appreciated synth-pop albums in Shelter, which was released on Speed Records in 1991. The album included the song here, "That Way Again" and "Thinking Of You" (which appeared in remix form in CRC episode #34). Both were issued as singles. However, the rest of the album, much like Intruder by T42, is a synth-pop delight and a must-have for any synth-pop completist, especially for fans of Red Flag, Cause & Effect, Anything Box, Cetu Javu and others. The group would record just one more album, Bass State Coma, in 1994, and an interesting cover of "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder before moving into the production field. Truly a shame their total musical output was not much, much greater. P.S. Go buy Shelter! The last band I'd like to mention in this episode is the band Data. Fronted by Georg Kajanus, who made waves in the 70s with his band Sailor, Kajanus left Sailor in 1978 to dabble in electronic music. From this, Data was born. The track here, In Blue ... DJ, is a hybrid mix by Razormaid! Records of a couple of tracks from Data's third and final album, Elegant Machinery. Their other releases include 1983's 2-Time and 1981's Opera Electronica. In 1995, Eternity Records released a compilation album called Accumulator containing the second and third albums in their entirety plus the track "Fallout" from the Opera Electronica album. That's it for this episode. I'll be back soon with another new episode. Thanks for listening!

Dan Parker is from Columbus, Georgia and has been in to racing since he was 16 years old. At his company Parker Chassis, he was a fabricator, chassis builder, crew chief, and drag racer who in 2005 won the title as the ADRL Pro Nitrous Pro Mod Champion. One of his dreams was to build a Bonneville car and a tragic racing accident set him on that course. Today Dan is realizing his dream and has designed and built a custom bike that in 2013 he took to the Bonneville Salt Flats and successfully ran, setting a world record. Dan returned in 2014 and set his F.I.M. class record. And what were these records for? Dan was the first blind man to independently race a motorcycle on the salt. Dan’s motto is: “I’m not a blind man trying to race. I’m a racer who went blind.”
Danny Thompson comes from a family whose name is synonymous with speed. His father, Micky Thompson, is the famed driver and innovator of the Challenger, a man who broke land speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Step by step, Danny Thompson has maintained and expanded his family’s celebrated history in motor sports. Danny raced motocross winning his first 18 races. He then moved on to raing cars in the Formula Atlantic Series, Supervees, and CRA Sprint Cars. He won the opening night of the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Grand Prix and drove for Chevrolet as a factory driver. He’s served as the President of the Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group and later as a consultant to entertainment, promotional, and safety firms.

ATOM - prend et mois - rather interesting MIKE SHANNON BIOGRAPHY It’s been 10 years since Mike Shannon started making a name for himself on the international techno scene as a DJ, producer and label owner. Now, having relocated to Berlin from Valencia via Montreal in 2007 he’s about to crown his first decade of active service with Memory Tree, his third full length to date, and his debut for another notable Canadian export - Richie Hawtin’s Plus 8 Records. Over the years, Mike has well proven that it’s not just his music that makes him such a valuable asset to the techno community, it’s his total dedication to the cause. Whether finding him standing behind a record shop counter or searching out new talent for his labels, it’s always been about bringing people together and investing in the future of the scene. Mike first got the vinyl bug at the tender age of 12, buying house and techno tunes at Play de Record in Toronto and by 15 his turntable skills were already landing him gigs at local underground parties and clubs. From then on, Mike’s musical world expanded rapidly thanks in no small part to Detroit’s influential WJLB radio station which turned him on to U.R., Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson - influences that still play a big role in his approach to music today. To satisfy his appetite for all things Techno, he was soon managing the orders at Speed Records in his hometown of Kitchener, Ontario where he continued his education; importing cutting edge sounds from across Europe. Throughout that time, Mike was out DJing and clubbing from Detroit to Toronto, making connections and building up a solid network of producers and artists, which led to the inevitable formation of his own label Cynosure in 1999. A couple of years later, he teamed up with Jeff Milligan on the more experimental Revolver Canada imprint. Both labels have since developed into highly respected and trusted sources, subsequently raising the profile of Canada’s electronic music scene by providing then unknown producers such as Akufen and Deadbeat an international platform to spread their distinctive sound throughout the world. Beyond developing homegrown talent, both imprints continue to invite an inspired selection of international artists including Pier Bucci, Monolake and Brett Johnson to name a few. For Mike it’s always been a question of choosing uncompromising artists who possess a unique and original voice - an attitude that also defines his own work whether recording as John Shananigans, The Sunaj Assassins or under his own name. There’s a distinctive feel to his music that’s both dark and soulful, that stays true to his roots while embracing the future and never fails to deliver a flurry of kick-ass, funk infected beats easily proven by a volley of timeless singles over the years and two previous full lengths. Take 2001’s Slight of Hand on Force Inc - an album that cemented his reputation as an up-and-coming Minimal Techno producer and 2005’s Possible Conclusions to Stories That Never End - a collection of chilled-out Electronica inspired by his musical odyssey throughout Chile in 2003. Mike’s recent move to Berlin represents the fulfillment of another chapter in his musical career and with so many influential Canadian producers having taken up residence in the German capital over the last few years, it’s a chance to hook up with old friends again and start collaborating on new plans and ideas, just like the old days. Then of course there’s the new album, the accompanying remix projects and the immediate matter of fatherhood to make 2008 something of a milestone both professionally and personally.
