TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible. Today is September 21st, and our readings are Daniel 7–8, Psalm 137, and Luke 4. Daniel sees strange and unsettling visions of kingdoms, beasts, violence, and earthly powers rising and falling. Yet in the middle of these visions, Daniel sees another figure, one "like a son of man," coming with the clouds of heaven. To him is given an everlasting kingdom, one that will never be destroyed. Psalm 137 gives voice to the anguish of people living in exile. They sit beside the rivers of Babylon and weep as they remember Jerusalem. Their grief is raw, and so is their anger. Then Luke takes us into the wilderness. Jesus has just heard the Father declare, "You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy." Now that beloved Son is tempted. The temptation is about far more than bread. Jesus is offered power, spectacle, and control. He is offered the kingdoms of the world if only he will bow to another way. But Jesus refuses. He will not build his kingdom through domination. He emerges from the wilderness and returns to Nazareth, where he tells us exactly what his kingdom will look like: Good news for the poor. Freedom for captives. Sight for the blind. Freedom for the oppressed. The time of the Lord's favor has come. Daniel saw kingdoms rise and fall. Jesus announces the kingdom that will remain. And he shows us what that kingdom looks like. TODAY'S DEVOTION: Another Kind of Kingdom Jesus is offered the kingdoms of the world. That caught my attention today. The devil takes Jesus up and shows him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. And then comes the offer: "I will give you the glory of these kingdoms and authority over them." Just bow down. Just play the game. Use power the way power has always been used. Dominate. Control. Take the throne. Make people comply. And Jesus says no. That's important. Because Daniel has just given us these strange visions of kingdoms that look like beasts. They devour. They crush. They destroy. That's what kingdoms can become. And then Jesus walks into the wilderness. The true Son of Man has come. And he is offered the opportunity to become another beast. He refuses. Jesus will have a kingdom. But it will not look like the kingdoms of this world. And Luke doesn't leave us wondering what Jesus' kingdom will look like. Jesus walks into the synagogue, opens the scroll of Isaiah, and tells us: Good news for the poor. Freedom for the captives. Sight for the blind. Freedom for the oppressed. The Lord's favor. That's his kingdom. Jesus doesn't conquer by becoming a bigger beast. He conquers by remaining human. Fully human. The true human. The Son who lives in communion with the Father and refuses to turn power into domination. And I think that's good news for us because we are constantly being invited to play the old game. Win. Control. Prove yourself. Get the upper hand. Protect what's yours. Make sure you're the one on top. But Jesus shows us another way. The way of the kingdom is not domination. It is love. It is liberation. It is healing. It is mercy. It is good news for people who have spent their lives receiving bad news. And notice where all of this begins. Before the wilderness. Before the temptation. Before the ministry. Before Jesus does anything. The Father has already said: "You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy." Jesus enters the wilderness from belovedness. He doesn't have to prove who he is. He doesn't need the kingdoms of the world to validate him. He already knows whose he is. Maybe that's part of the invitation for us today. The powers of this world will always offer us identities. Successful. Important. Powerful. Right. Victorious. But Jesus invites us into something deeper. Beloved. And when we know that we are beloved, we don't have to turn ourselves into beasts to survive. We can follow Jesus. We can choose love over domination. Mercy over vengeance. Service over control. We can live as citizens of another kingdom. A kingdom that Daniel says will never be destroyed. A kingdom embodied in Jesus. So when the kingdoms around you roar, remember who you are. And remember whose kingdom you belong to. You are beloved. Follow the Son. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Reflection on Scripture: What is true wisdom? As someone who has studied a lot of ideas of humans in the form of advanced mathematics and physics I find the question of what wisdom is, to be fascinating. As I've learned about philosophers I find some ideas interesting yet it does not compare to the value of the wisdom of the Lord? I was talking with a young man who was really struggling because he felt he wasn't measuring up to what he wanted his life to become. I spent a great deal of time challenging his notion. He was looking for what would make his life feel like it was good enough. The reality is that there is no eternal philosophy of man. When we try to live for ourselves in our own will be eternally unsatisfying  As an example. Solomon is pondering all the wisdom he had acquired, and even more curious is that his wisdom was a gift from God. And yet when he reflected on the truth and depth of his wisdom he realized that the only thing that mattered was the wisdom of the Lord. When we look at his life we discover a perfect example of this problem. God gave his wisdom, his wisdom became world renowned and he gained great wealth as a result. Yet as his influence grew, he allowed for his attention to be taken away from the Lord and even yield toward false gods. And then the end of his life was tipified with disappointment and failure. The only success he found in life was by learning the wisdom of God.  What would God's wisdom move you toward in your life? What challenge or struggle have you been working through in life? How would God's wisdom change your perspective on it? What of human wisdom is not working for you and how can you incorporate God's wisdom in its place. Because Christ has already conquered evil, we can fearlessly let the Spirit lead us into the wilderness of our inner lives, trusting him to meet us there and transform us through confession, lament, Scripture, prayer, and honest community.

The Spirit gives the gift of prophecy to the body so that when the church comes together she can be encouraged/built up and so unbelievers will know that God is really among us.

Jesus' death and resurrection were not the only aspects of his work promised in the Old Testament Scriptures. The Scriptures also promise the global spread of his gospel by his Spirit and through his people. This is a profound truth that gives the church confidence today to go and send and risk much for the sake of God's name among the nations. In Luke 24:47 we continue our multi-week trek through Jesus' third and final resurrection encounter in which he anchors his disciples in the Scriptures to strengthen them for their mission.

The Holy Spirit works to direct not only us but all of creation to its intended fullness in Christ. But how does the Spirit do this? Through physical things and physical people. Everywhere the river goes, life appears. Trees grow along its banks, fruit comes month after month, and even the waters of the Dead Sea become fresh. It is a picture of the life of God flowing outward, bringing healing and restoration wherever it goes. Then Luke brings us to Bethlehem. Jesus is born. Angels announce good news of great joy. Shepherds hurry to see the child and then tell everyone what they have seen and heard. And amid all this activity, Luke tells us something quietly beautiful about Mary. She treasured these things and pondered them in her heart. Mary doesn't understand everything that is happening to her. She cannot possibly know where this story will lead. Yet she makes room within herself for mystery. She stores these things in her heart. Today we are invited to do the same. There are things in our lives we cannot yet understand. There are hopes still unfulfilled, questions still unanswered, wounds still healing, and stories whose endings we cannot yet see. We don't have to solve them all today. We can hold them before God. We can treasure what we have been given. And we can trust that the God who sees us, knows us, and loves us is still at work in our story. TODAY'S DEVOTION: She Stored These Things in Her Heart She stored it in her heart. That's what Luke tells us Mary did in the midst of miracle, mystery, and uncertainty. There was the promise. There was the fear. There was the joy. And there were things that simply didn't make sense. Mary didn't explain them away. She didn't deny them. She didn't pretend to understand what she couldn't understand. She held them. She treasured them. She stored them in her heart. And I think there is something here for us. God doesn't always give us explanations. There are things in life that simply don't make sense. Things that cause us to wonder. Things that cause us to worry. Things that hurt. There are prayers that seem unanswered. Dreams that haven't come to pass. Losses we don't understand. Relationships that haven't turned out the way we hoped. Questions about our future. Questions about ourselves. Questions about God. And maybe faith isn't always about finding an explanation. Maybe sometimes faith looks like Mary. We simply hold these things before God. We store them in our hearts. Mary did that when shepherds showed up with stories about angels declaring that her child was the Messiah. She stored it away. She did it again when Simeon spoke over Jesus in the temple and then told Mary that a sword would pierce her own soul. She held that too. And years later, when twelve-year-old Jesus remained behind in his Father's house, Luke tells us that Mary didn't understand what Jesus meant. But again, she stored these things in her heart. There was a willingness in Mary to let the story unfold. She didn't have to know everything. She didn't have to control everything. She didn't have to understand everything. She trusted that God was present. She trusted that she was seen. She trusted that she was known. She trusted that she was loved. And she trusted that somehow God's purpose was still unfolding. Maybe that's where you are today. What are you storing in your heart? An unfulfilled hope? A disappointment? A loss? A question? Something beautiful that you don't yet understand? Something painful that you wish you could understand? You don't have to solve it today. You can hold it. You can bring it before God. You can allow your heart to become a vessel for mystery, hope, pain, memory, promise, and faith. And you can remember this: You are seen. You are known. You are loved. Paul says that we are God's workmanship. The Greek word is poiēma. We are God's workmanship, God's handiwork, God's poem. Your story isn't finished. God is still at work. So perhaps today we can learn something from Mary. Be willing. Be available. Hold the mystery. Store these things in your heart. And trust that the One who loves you is still writing the story. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May we, like Mary, store these things in our hearts, trusting that in God's time and through God's love, the story will be revealed. May it be so. At what point do we become so obsessed with trusting God that the fruit of the Spirit just automatically flows out of us? And what about the temptation of lust and resisting sin? My pastor says our hearts are still dirty, but I think they're new and clean. What's your take? I'm still struggling with persistent thoughts of bitterness and resentment. What can I do?

Do we really dwell upon the fullness of God's love for us in Christ? How much have we grasped the freeness of divine grace? In a sermon of almost relentless focus and intensity, Spurgeon insists upon the freeness of God's grace, of his grace upon grace. He first considers the things the things which are freely given to us by God, ranging across salvation in all its fulness, and concluding with the crowning blessing, which is God giving himself—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—to his chosen ones. However, there is grace upon grace, for not only are these things given, but God also gives us the power to receive them! We could never have grasped these blessings unless the Lord in his mercy had given us grace to receive his grace. However, there is again grace upon grace, for not only do we receive grace to receive grace, but the Spirit also graciously gives us the knowledge of these things, a saving, experiential knowledges of them. With this goes a particular warning, too, about the spirit of the world which contends against the Spirit of God, a spirit which we cannot entertain if we are to receive these blessings. So we come into true possession of “the things that have been freely given to us by God” (1Cor 2:12). presented by Lauren Stibgen The seasons are changing again, and it is hard to believe that kids have returned to school. I have seen so many social media posts about preparing kids for school from elementary to college. Moms lamenting about lists, waking their kids up on a schedule, and trying to balance this with work and other commitments. Trying to get into a new season of balance.    The reality is our lives are full of these changes no matter the season and no matter the reason. When it comes to seeking balance in work and life, part of our problem is separating the two things to begin with. The fact is all of life is some type of work, whether we are on the job receiving a paycheck, at home with family, or even volunteering.    Change and disruption happen by the moment in our lives. Change can be good and change can be difficult. Change can be expected and unexpected. Sometimes we make choices to change and sometimes we don't.     I think this is why the Bible refers to life as a sojourn, a temporary stay or visit in a place that is not our permanent home. The turmoil this life causes is well characterized in 1 Peter 2:11, Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul (ESV).    Repeatedly, the Word reminds us this world is not our home. Ephesians 2:19 states, So then you are no longer strangers and sojourners, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God (RSV). We are fellow citizens and saints as members of God's household. But what does this look like, and how can we use this citizenship and membership to bring our lives into a better balance today?   First, let's consider what brings us out of balance with this citizenship we have as believers. What did Paul mean in 1 Peter 2 when he mentions the passions of the flesh waging war against us?   These passions of the flesh can show up in any of our work, at home or on the job, and we need to be aware of how these things are creating the lack of balance we perceive. I would sum up these passions of the flesh with one short word—sin. God's Word has many verses that summarize these sins both in the Old and New Testaments, but the verses in Galatians 5:19-21 specifically mention the flesh.   The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.    All this wages war on our citizenship and is often a root cause for feelings of imbalance in our life whether we are in control or not. There are words from this list that are very present today. I want you to ask:   What rivalries am I a part of? At work, in my family, or in my community?  Where am I causing dissent or division? Am I causing strife at work?  Am I jealous of someone or what they have?  Am I striving for significance in my life?  Have I been angry in the last week to the point of yelling?  What am I thinking about so much that it has become an idol to me?    Again, you may not be the cause of some of these things that wage war on your flesh. For example, maybe someone has caused division at work, and you are an unfortunate recipient of the backlash. Perhaps you have some rivalry in your family that you are not choosing but someone else is. Maybe someone is jealous of your achievements and is acting out because of this.    You see, this is why chasing balance here in this world can never happen, but we can shift our focus on our citizenship and as fellow members of the household of God. This shift can help us feel more in balance when the world seems to work wildly against us—you know, the part about waging war. While the word war seems dramatic, I want you to remember that even Jesus told us that in the world we will have tribulation. (John 16:33)    I love the other side of the promise Jesus has in John 16:33. He promises that in him we will have peace because he has overcome the world! He tells us to rejoice and be glad because our reward is great in heaven. (Matthew 5:12)    Nehemiah 8:10 tells us to not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is our strength! Psalm 16:11 states that God makes known to us the path of life and that in him is the fullness of joy!    Jesus is peace. We can have joy in the presence of the Lord, and with him is the fullness of joy! Personally, when I am worn out from all that life is handing me, I tell my husband or close friends, “I just want peace.” It feels like a beautiful stillness and a place where all the things in this world cannot reach me. It is full of light and joy! The truth is I already have these things because I believe in Jesus Christ and through him, I have a home in heaven with God the Father. This good feeling of joy that is my strength needs my focus and attention. That's why we are commanded repeatedly in Scripture to rejoice in the Lord! (Philippians 3:1 and 4:4, Psalm 118:24).    When I really want this peace and joy, I start by acknowledging where it comes from because I cannot produce it on my own. True joy is found in the filling of the Holy Spirit. In fact, joy is a fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22-23. So, to find Jesus and experience his peace, hope, joy, and the rest of the Spirit's fruit, I need to be giving the blessed Trinity my time.    When was the last time you took 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 to heart?    Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. A verse from Philippians 1:12 has been rolling over in my mind for a few months now. Paul writes, Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. It really got me to think about my circumstances; both the highs and the lows, the good and the bad. God uses all of this to advance the gospel, but do I allow this?    It is easy to rejoice when things are easy—when we celebrate, receive a promotion or a raise at work, or welcome a new child into our family. But what about a posture of rejoicing even when we are experiencing the opposite?  In James 1:2-3 we are told to Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. This is echoed in Romans 5:2-5:   …through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.  Can I take this posture of rejoicing in my suffering, knowing these times will produce endurance, that endurance will produce character, and this character will produce hope?   Like many of you, I work in a high-pressure job. The demands change and, with many personalities, priorities shift. The team can feel the demands of the moment. There are more times than I can count in the last few years when I have heard, “You always stay so hopeful” or, “I don't know how you work through all of this”.    Now, this does not mean I am not real about the trials I face, but what I have found is some of the suffering has produced an endurance that has truly changed my character. I am able to stay consistent, hopeful, and caring for my colleagues. Seeing people how God would see them.    My favorite conversations are the unexpected ones. During a difficult moment one day, I chose to walk away for a few minutes. I needed a refocus on my mindset and take some space to tell the Lord how I needed him to help me with my words and patience. Honestly, I was frustrated and on the verge of tears. After a few minutes, a colleague followed and asked how I deal with things. My reply was that honestly without my faith in God, I truly wouldn't be able to some days. What followed was a beautiful conversation about faith and Jesus that was so unexpected, but I can truly say that what has happened to me has served to advance the gospel.   In this moment, I was not rejoicing, but I was thinking about my flesh—more specifically, how I didn't want my flesh to create a situation of “waging war” through hasty words. And I chose to seek the Lord in prayer. What followed was joy.   Keeping any balance in life as a follower of Jesus Christ is dependent on how focused you are on remembering that your time here on earth is a sojourn. You are on a journey, and you really don't know how long this journey will last. Think about your heavenly home as a member of God's family.   Your ability to find this joy, peace, and hope starts with your practice of abiding. How are you staying firm and steadfast in your relationship with Jesus? Is Jesus the center of your life or just someone you think about on a Sunday during church?   As you evaluate all the aspects of your life, where does Jesus fit into your job, your relationships, your health and wellness, your goals? Do you have a lens of biblical wisdom on all these matters, or does the Word of God sit on a shelf in your house? Do you own a Bible?   How often are you reading God's Word or deeply meditating on it? After all:   For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope (Romans 15:4). Are you in a Bible study or small group? Do you have faith-filled friends who love Jesus like you do?    What about prayer? How much are you talking to God? Do you have other people praying for you on a regular basis?  Abiding. Jesus asks us to abide in him, and he will abide in us. He tells us he is the vine, and we are the branches. In this abiding, we will bear much fruit. (John 5:4-5) Jesus also tells us that apart from him we can do nothing.   If in abiding we can bear much fruit, this means we can bear true joy! Remember, joy is one of the fruits of the Spirit.    How have you assessed your abiding? Be encouraged! If you are reading this message, this means you long for Christian encouragement. While this is not a substitute for any of the other forms of abiding, may it be a reminder to pick up your Bible, find community, and pray!   It is in this place that you learn about your true identity and citizenship. As we all sojourn here, may we encourage one another as we look toward what our hope is ultimately in—the eternal life which God has promised before the beginning of time (Titus 1:2) and the return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.   I pray today you are filled with a peace that surpasses all understanding, joy that fills you from head to toe, and a hope for things to come! May you be able to say, “What has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel!”

TODAY'S EPISODE: Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible. Today is September 18th, and our readings are Ezekiel 45–46 and Luke 1. In Ezekiel, we continue through the prophet's vision of restoration. Land is divided, honest measurements are commanded, offerings are described, and provision is made for worship among God's people. Running through these detailed instructions is a concern for justice, faithfulness, and a people being restored. Then we turn the page to Luke, and suddenly we find ourselves standing at the dawn of something new. An angel appears to Zechariah with news that Elizabeth will have a son. His name will be John, and he will prepare the way for the Lord. Then Gabriel visits a young woman named Mary with an even more astonishing announcement. She will bear a son named Jesus, and his kingdom will never end. Both Zechariah and Mary eventually find themselves singing. Mary sings of the God who notices the lowly, fills the hungry, and remembers his mercy. Zechariah sings of the tender mercy of God, through which the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us. That is our invitation today. Whatever darkness we may find ourselves sitting in, the morning light is coming. God has not forgotten us. His mercy is new. His light is breaking through. And we are invited to join the song. TODAY'S DEVOTION: God's New Morning Light Because of God's tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us. I love that image. Every morning, the light breaks through the darkness of night. And maybe every new morning is a kind of rehearsal. A reminder of that great morning when the light of God's Son breaks fully upon us. Zechariah sings: "Because of God's tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us." And what will this light do? It will give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. And it will guide us to the path of peace. Zechariah has a song. And it is a song worth singing. But Mary has a song too. She says, "How my spirit rejoices in God my Savior! For he took notice of his lowly servant girl." God took notice of her. This young woman. This lowly servant girl. Someone the powerful people of the world might easily overlook. But God sees her. God's light shines upon the lowly. His light breaks upon the humble. It shines upon those willing to let God be God in them. Those willing to believe that what God says he will do, he will do. And something happens when our humble faith meets God's merciful morning light. A song begins to rise. That's what happened to Zechariah. That's what happened to Mary. And I think it can happen to us too. Maybe you're feeling lowly today. Maybe you're hungry. Maybe you're carrying shame. Maybe you're sitting in a darkness that seems reluctant to give way. Maybe you feel unseen. But the morning light from heaven is breaking upon us. God sees you. God has not forgotten you. And when we begin to encounter this God of love, this God who sees us and meets us in our lowliness, a song can begin to rise within us. Not because everything has suddenly become easy. Not because all our questions have been answered. But because the light has come. Because God is with us. Because his mercy is tender. Because darkness does not get the final word. So join Zechariah. Join Mary. Join all those who have dared to believe that God is good enough to take notice of the lowly and big enough to do what he has promised. Let faith rise. Let the morning light break through. And let your song rise with it. That's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's the prayer I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.   And now Lord,  make me an instrument of your peace.  Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon.  Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope.  Where there is darkness, light.  And where there is sadness,  Joy.  Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love.  For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life.  Amen And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray... Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image.
