By 1986, REM were veterans of the college rock scene, had recorded in London and gotten songs into the charts. For their 4th album, Life's Rich Pageant, they took a step forward in stretching not only what they could do musically but voicing social, political and environmental concerns through their lyrics. We don't find it to be totally in your face (as opposed to say, U2) but more subliminal as their lyrics can sometimes be nebulous or at least not straight forward and not about rock cliches like hot rods and chicks (not that there's anything wrong with hot rods and chicks if you know what I'm saying out there boys - Ian Astbury, The Cult). They may sneak in stories about a polluted river in Cuyahoga or regret the rise and fall of a revolutionary in Central America (The Flowers of Guatemala) or even the effects of acid rain damaging our environment (Fall On Me). But they do it with upbeat riffs and guitar runs from Peter Buck with lead singer Michael Stipe delivering the message while bassist Mike Mills provides the counterpoint lyrics to not only tell the story but give REM their signature sound. The driving beat provided by Bill Berry make songs like I Believe an all out rocker you can jump around and shout along to. And they experiment with things like banjos on Swan Swan H and middle eastern sounds on Underneath The Bunker (not quite an instrumental). This album went gold and is the predecessor to Document which would be their first platinum record thanks to The One I Love & It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine). Superman, a cover by the 60's psychedelic band Clique, helped them get in the charts and draw some interest beyond college campuses and college radio. That interest would build to Document which would lead to a $40 million record contract from Warner Brothers and put them on a steeper trajectory to pop superstardom. REM fans are often divided between those who knew and loved them in 80s before they hit it big and those who came to know them thanks to the big record company, expensive videos and pop stylings. For me, the IRS records of the 80s will always be the real REM and Life's Rich Pageant is a great moment in time for them. They've learned the ropes, made some good records and are not complacent - they moved forward believing in themselves, each other and their convictions which would eventually bring them all the success in the world. The castle carries the story of Irma, the piano-playing ghost said to have died in 1932 and returned to the mansion built in 1909 by Rollin B. Lane, along with the ghost of magician Dai Vernon near his favorite seat in the Palace of Prestidigitation, the unidentified girl in the Haunted Cellar, and a Halloween 2011 fire that started at the exact time of Houdini's 1926 death and gutted the Dante Room while sparing the Houdini Room.From there the episode checks into the haunted hotels of Los Angeles, beginning with the Knickerbocker, which opened in Hollywood in July of 1929, hosted Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio on their honeymoon, and staged Bess Houdini's tenth and final rooftop séance the night an isolated thunderstorm struck the building alone. It moves through the Ambassador on Wilshire Boulevard, where Robert F. Kennedy was gunned down by Sirhan Sirhan in the kitchen on June 4, 1968, the Rosslyn Annex with its forgotten Prohibition speakeasy, the Alexandria and its bricked-off phantom wing, the Biltmore where Elizabeth Short, the Black Dahlia, was last seen before her 1947 murder, and the Cecil Hotel, home to serial killers Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger and the site where guest Elisa Lam was found dead in the rooftop water tank in 2013 after guests complained the water tasted strange.Next the episode traces L.A.'s long history of the occult, running from Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and his early Pasadena partnership with rocket scientist Jack Parsons, who performed the "Babalon Working" ritual and later died at 37 in a home laboratory explosion, to Charles Manson and the Family murders of August 1969 that killed Sharon Tate and six others, Carlos Castaneda and the Yaqui shaman Don Juan Matus who launched the New Age movement, and Jim Baker, the marine turned messiah Father Yod, who took fourteen wives and led the Source Family from a Hollywood Hills mansion. A famous athlete sat tall in his seat as he prepared to fly to the championship bout he knew he’d win. A flight attendant walked by and said, “Sir, please fasten your seat belt.” The man smiled, “Superman don’t need no seat belt.” She replied without missing a beat, “Superman don’t need no airplane. Buckle up.” And he did. Success can swell our heads. We don’t need a seatbelt or a flight attendant telling us what to do. We can take care of ourselves. If we bring this attitude to church, we’re like an eye that says to the hand, “I don’t need you!” or a head that says to the feet, “I don’t need you!” (v. 21). The truth is, every part of the body is needed, and “those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable” (v. 22). We are made in the image of the triune God, the Father, Son, and Spirit who thrive in an interdependent community of love. The God who exists in perfect relationship within Himself made us to be in relationship with others in life and in the church. We’re not all the same, and that’s a good thing. “If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be?” (v. 17). We’re not all the same but we’re all “indispensable” (v. 22). Who helps you at your local body of Christ? Tell them you notice, that you see them, and thank them for their service. And ask God to show you where you can serve other believers.

This week The Guys revisited a tradition of going to a movie none of their wives wanted to see.  Permission to watch Supergirl was granted and acted upon.   No Oscar nominations are expected (though the CGI dog is pretty good), but The Guys give it 3 thumbs up.  Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa seem to fit their roles, and David Corenswet seems very Superman-ish in his appearances.  Despite Jay's confusion (why is this movie taking place mostly in space with what seemed like cameo appearances from Star Wars aliens?), the story moves along and makes sense.  Lots of planets, multi-colored suns, but no multi-verses.  In other news, sadly, the leader from an iconic band passes from the planet.   On the other side of the planet, for those who love electric cars AND Batman, Mihandra is ready to take your rupees.  “Heroes” is back on Netflix, so maybe Jay will get past the first few episodes this time around.  Save The Guys!  Save the World!

DC threw everyone into the same movie by film number two. Possibly the best episode of the season, Episode 5: "The Death of Superman," delivered on every level. Even with a runtime of less than 30 minutes, the nonstop action, intense fights, and Superman getting tossed around made it feel much bigger than its length.Now we want to hear from you! What was your reaction after watching this episode? Where do you think the story goes from here now that Clark appears to be far less "super" than he was before? And what do you make of John Kent? Was that a version of him from another universe, or was it the same John who previously tried to change his future?There are so many interesting theories floating around, and we can't wait to see how everything unfolds in Episode 6.

By 1986, REM were veterans of the college rock scene, had recorded in London and gotten songs into the charts. For their 4th album, Life's Rich Pageant, they took a step forward in stretching not only what they could do musically but voicing social, political and environmental concerns through their lyrics. We don't find it to be totally in your face (as opposed to say, U2) but more subliminal as their lyrics can sometimes be nebulous or at least not straight forward and not about rock cliches like hot rods and chicks (not that there's anything wrong with hot rods and chicks if you know what I'm saying out there boys - Ian Astbury, The Cult). They may sneak in stories about a polluted river in Cuyahoga or regret the rise and fall of a revolutionary in Central America (The Flowers of Guatemala) or even the effects of acid rain damaging our environment (Fall On Me). But they do it with upbeat riffs and guitar runs from Peter Buck with lead singer Michael Stipe delivering the message while bassist Mike Mills provides the counterpoint lyrics to not only tell the story but give REM their signature sound. The driving beat provided by Bill Berry make songs like I Believe an all out rocker you can jump around and shout along to. And they experiment with things like banjos on Swan Swan H and middle eastern sounds on Underneath The Bunker (not quite an instrumental). This album went gold and is the predecessor to Document which would be their first platinum record thanks to The One I Love & It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine). Superman, a cover by the 60's psychedelic band Clique, helped them get in the charts and draw some interest beyond college campuses and college radio. That interest would build to Document which would lead to a $40 million record contract from Warner Brothers and put them on a steeper trajectory to pop superstardom. REM fans are often divided between those who knew and loved them in 80s before they hit it big and those who came to know them thanks to the big record company, expensive videos and pop stylings. For me, the IRS records of the 80s will always be the real REM and Life's Rich Pageant is a great moment in time for them. They've learned the ropes, made some good records and are not complacent - they moved forward believing in themselves, each other and their convictions which would eventually bring them all the success in the world. Mikaela Hoover is in the midst of a well-earned banner year. She's made memorable appearances in a number of projects over the years, including scene-stealing work as Floor in Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 3, but her run in 2025 and 2026 is putting her in the spotlight in the way she deserves.
