Cassie Abel had a different road than most to the ski industry. While her peers were spending as much time as possible on snow, Cassie was winning 4 State Championships in HS before her Hall of Fame collegiate career. After a stint of a 9-5 lifestyle, Cassie got sucked into the ski industry, first with resort marketing, and then on the brand side with Smith. But when her dream job left town, Cassie stayed back in Sun Valley, started a PR agency, eventually jumped into entrepreneurship with her Ski and Mountain Bike start up, Wild Rye. This is fun episode with a passionate, tenacious, awesome person. Maro LeBlance asks the Inappropriate Questions. Bobby Kros hates interviews as much as he loves brewing beer, and while the cofounder of the La Vista, Nebraska, brewery may occasionally search for words to describe what he's doing, the beers he makes are perfectible capable of speaking for themselves. And speak they have, winning Craft Beer & Brewing Magazine® Best in Beer trophies in 2021, 2024, and 2025, in three wildly divergent styles. Yet Kros isn't resting on his laurels, and he continues to experiment with new ingredients and techniques in pursuit of perfection. In this episode, Kros discusses: brewing Czech-style pale lager with floor-malted Bohemian malt improving efficiency through dry hopping without sacrificing quality balancing beween hot-side, whirlpool, and dry-hop additions in hazy IPA experimenting with new and unreleased concentrated flowable hop products changing recipes for every batch in the elusive hunt for perfection using lighter C-malts in barleywine while using the barrel as an ingredient cask-conditioning in orange-wine barrels And more. A note from Jeff Alworth: "I am very excited to announce the launch of a new podcast: “One Iconic Beer.” The first episode will go live on Monday, and we're busy putting together the second episode, which will follow in a month. Anyone familiar with my “Making of a Classic” series on this blog will gather the main idea. We'll be looking at a single beer and unpacking why it has become an icon through its history, accomplishment, cultural impact, and influence. The idea for the podcast came from All About Beer editor John Holl and, full disclosure, my friend. AAB will host the podcast and John has agreed to following me down a slightly more ambitious path than he might have bargained for. We're going to interview a couple people to tell these stories; someone from the brewery who can give a personal account of the beer and describe how it's made, and someone who can reflect on the broader story, providing historical background and the reason for the beer's stature. I don't know that he planned on an involved editing process when he pitched the idea, but he was game to give it a shot. I hope the result is richer story than any single person could provide."Tune in starting on March 16 for the first episode featuring Allagash White. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN… welcome to the most electrifying time of the Beer Engine calendar! The arena lights are on. The taps are flowing. The brackets are printed. And somewhere in the distance you can hear the sound of aluminium cans cracking like folding chairs over a wrestler's back…BRACKETMANIA 2026 IS HERE.This week, Tony and Griff step into the ring to kick off their annual bracket showdown, a tournament of questionable decisions, passionate arguments, and bold predictions that will rumble all the way through to the heat of summer. And let me tell you brother… this thing gets heated. The lads unveil this year's 64-entry bracket, packed with matchups so intense they'd make a steel cage blush. There are early favourites, dark horses, and at least one entrant that has absolutely no business being there—but somehow survived Griff's seeding process. Will Tony's “statistical approach” dominate the field?Or will Griff's patented “gut feeling and two pints deep” strategy once again throw the whole tournament into chaos?Expect:• Dramatic bracket reveals• Trash talk worthy of a championship belt• Wild predictions that absolutely will not age well• A few surprise rule changes mid-episode (because of course there are)• And at least one moment where someone demands a bracket rematchAs tradition dictates, the bracket will evolve week-by-week throughout the season. Rivalries will form. Alliances will crumble. And by the time summer arrives, only one contender will stand victorious in the centre of the Beer Engine ring.So grab a cold one, pull up a seat ringside, and prepare yourself…Because Bracketmania is running wild in 2026. ★ Support this podcast ★
Episode 26 of Matt Likes Beer features Electric Mainline, a West Coast IPA from Grimm Artisan Ales, a Brooklyn-based brewery Matt knows primarily through retail purchases rather than firsthand taproom experience. With limited personal history to draw from, the episode leans heavily into technical judging, exploration, and education, making it one of the most analytically driven installments of the season. Matt opens by exploring Grimm's extensive and stylistically diverse beer catalog, noting the brewery's wide-ranging output across IPAs, lagers, stouts, sours, and mixed fermentation beers. While researching Grimm live during the recording, Matt discusses the brewery's dual-level taproom layout, contrasting its polished upstairs space with a more industrial downstairs brewery setting—an aesthetic that strongly appeals to his personal tastes. Before judging begins, Matt reads the brewery's own description of Electric Mainline, which declares the beer a West Coast IPA featuring Luminosa hops, supported by Mosaic, Citra, Columbus, and Simcoe. With the style clearly defined, Matt evaluates the beer strictly as BJCP Category 21A: American IPA. Appearance is a standout, with the beer pouring a brilliant, unmistakable yellow, a large, persistent white head, and excellent lacing. While visually striking, Matt notes an interesting guideline quirk: BJCP color descriptors list medium gold to light amber, making pure yellow technically outside the expected range—an example of how modern IPAs sometimes outpace written standards. Aroma earns a full 12/12 score, delivering expressive notes of orange zest, mandarin citrus, lemon brightness, subtle pine, and a faint grainy malt backbone. Matt explicitly follows advice from a fellow judge—“don't fear the 50”—choosing not to deduct points where the beer fully delivers stylistically. Flavor presents a more mixed picture. While citrus character remains vibrant and layered, bitterness is strongest on the tongue rather than in the finish or aftertaste, falling short of the firm, lingering bitterness expected in a classic West Coast IPA. Malt presence is detectable but subdued, leading Matt to score flavor at 14/20. Mouthfeel is spot-on, with a medium body, high carbonation, and smooth texture earning a perfect score. Overall impression balances enjoyment with technical critique, resulting in a final score of 39 out of 50, placing Electric Mainline solidly in the “Excellent” range—even with noted flavor shortcomings. With no one-star reviews available, the episode transitions into a long-form educational soapbox prompted by a conversation with a non-judge friend: Why do Double and Triple IPAs often taste sweeter than regular IPAs? Matt breaks down the concept using brewing fundamentals, explaining fermentable versus non-fermentable sugars, increased body, alcohol's impact on sweetness perception, and why higher-ABV IPAs inevitably drift away from the crisp bitterness drinkers expect. The episode concludes with a preview of upcoming IPA-focused discussions and reinforces one of the show's core missions: helping everyday beer drinkers understand why beer tastes the way it does, not just whether it's “good” or “bad.”
The city of Philadelphia is a great beer town. It's also a great food town and a place to get a dose of history, while living your best life. This week on the podcast it's a conversation with Andrew Rubenstein of Sacred Vice, who shares tips and insights on visiting the city of brotherly love. This Episode is Sponsored by:Berkeley YeastOur Tropics yeast is based on a London Ale strain, but we added a new gene to its genome that codes for a unique thiol-releasing enzyme. The enzyme converts the precursors in barley to free thiols that smell and taste like passionfruit and grapefruit. It's super clean. No off-flavors like burnt rubber or other sulfurous notes. Just tropical aromatics. You don't have to do anything unusual either, like mash hopping. Just pitch dry Tropics and supercharge your hazy IPA.Dogfish Head Craft BreweryCalling all hop heads! Dogfish Head's 60 Minute IPA is a fantastically hoppy India Pale Ale that's beautifully balanced thanks to their unique continual hopping method.
Dan Brouillette has always worked in creative fields—he was a professional photographer before launching Lumen in the waning days of the pandemic—but he's always been particularly attracted to the technical aspects of creation. Like every IPA-focused brewer, he's on a neverending search for the most expressive, layered, and interesting hops. But he's also found that the information upon which many brewers rely when choosing hop lots often tells an incomplete story. Total oil numbers can be misleading, as they include oils that don't survive the brewing process; hops that smell good relative to others at selection may not have high enough oil concentration to punch through in finished beer. Brouillette has found that using past chemical data paired with his own sensory can be far more effective when seeking out hops that are going to give him the impact he seeks. In this episode, Brouilette shares: how spreadsheets are often a better tool for selecting hop lots than the old-fashioned rub his process for earmarking specific hop compounds at certain thresholds to ensure they're effective in beer designing different types of hazy IPA that appeal to different use cases and drinkers achieving beautiful hop expression in hazy IPAs with less than 4 percent ABV brewing hazy IPA with only 40 percent base malt And more. “We're brewing our World Beer Cup beers right now, and those will be much different than a beer that I want to make Top Drops on Instagram,” Brouilette says. “They're just different audiences. We don't brew one type of hazy IPA. There are different segments and sub-styles within the style, and we brew all of those.” G&D Chillers G&D's new Elite 290 Micro-series runs on a Natural Refrigerant with near-zero Global Warming Potential—built for brewers who care about sustainability and performance. Hugh O'Neill of Alesmith Brewer interviews Andrew Hamilton of Wicklow Wolf Brewing. Just pitch dry Tropics and supercharge your hazy IPA.SennosIs your fermentation data still a mystery? Do you really need an IPA wipe before applying a ceramic coating after polishing? In this episode, I break down a real email from a customer who asked if you can go straight from polishing to coating — or if panel prep is mandatory. We'll cover: • Where the IPA wipe "rule" came from • How different polishes leave different residues • When panel prep actually makes sense • When it's unnecessary • Why overcomplication is hurting detailers If your polish finishes clean, do you really need to strip the surface again? AI is reshaping what it means to be a modern manufacturing professional. When a 30-year veteran retires, decades of expertise used to leave as well. How they ran a machine, which feeds and speeds worked, and all the practical knowledge that separated good from great. Now, Mastercam's AI co-pilots can capture that information and make it instantly accessible. The learning curve that used to take years can now be compressed into months, making manufacturing careers more accessible to the next generation.Chris sits down with Russ Bukowski, President of Mastercam, to explore how CAM technology has evolved from manual G-code programming to AI-powered systems that are fundamentally changing manufacturing accessibility. The conversation covers the business side of manufacturing transformation, why mid-size machine shops and tier-two suppliers are no longer at the mercy of large OEMs, the leadership lessons Russ learned from Walt Disney and why manufacturing salaries are starting at $80K+ for CNC programmers. In this episode, find out:How CAM systems act as a 10x multiplier for manufacturing professionals. The evolution from manual G-code programming to AI-powered CAM systemsWhy Mastercam's AI co-pilot is bridging the knowledge gap left by retiring manufacturing expertsHow post-COVID supply chain vulnerabilities are driving companies to vertically integrateThe power shift giving mid-size manufacturers leverage in negotiations and exclusive supplier agreementsWhy manufacturing needs to be promoted as a viable white-collar careerHow technical expertise creates leadership credibility The importance of visiting customers and talking to shop floor employeesWhat Mastercam's acquisition enabled in terms of investment, innovation, and customer relationshipsEnjoying the show? It's not going to replace a program or replace an operator, but it is going to enable them to do more and to move more quickly in the business.”“CAM is really that enabler. Without it, the digital design to physical machine process is slow and error-prone. It removes the cognitive burden and makes complex manufacturing possible. It's that 10x multiplier for somebody in manufacturing, making somebody a 10x manufacturing expert because they're able to deliver results so much faster by using computing power.”“I always like to ask myself this as a leader, if nobody was looking, if there were no repercussions, would I still make the right decision? From a sustainability standpoint, from an ethical standpoint, that's how I hold myself accountable.”Links & mentions:Mastercam, CAD/CAM solutions that are trusted to deliver superior and reliable machining performance with advanced productivity tools and AI-enabled CAM capabilities Tree House Brewing Company, brewers of Julius and pioneers of hazy IPA, Tree House produces world-renowned beer in Charlton, Massachusetts Make sure to visit http://manufacturinghappyhour.com for detailed show notes and a full list of resources mentioned in this episode. The opinions expressed by guests are their own, and do not necessarily reflect the views of or endorsement by the Information Professionals Association. During this episode, Doug Wilbur discussed propaganda, information warfare, and strategic optimism–emphasizing society's capability for problem-solving. He defined propaganda as any communication intended to influence behavior in the propagandist's favor, distinguishing it from persuasion. Wilbur concluded the Vietnamese were the most successful propagandists, effectively delegitimizing the South Vietnamese government as a US puppet, which made the 1968 Tet Offensive a psychological victory despite military defeat. He explained that communism relies on a messianic eschatology, promising a utopian future. Wilbur also addressed modern threats, noting that AI increases the vulnerability of open societies to personalized disinformation, compounding the challenge of combating propaganda due to people relying on fast-thinking heuristics. Today's daily comedy episode proves two things: kids are expensive, and karaoke should absolutely require a permit. We kick things off with an email that had the entire studio arguing like a courtroom drama sponsored by Fisher-Price. A military family's kid chucks a Lego at a friend's 75-inch QLED TV (because of course it was a 75-inch QLED), leaving a tiny but permanent “oops” mark. They do the right thing and offer to replace it — $1,200 later — only to find out the “damaged” TV is getting relocated to the daughter's room. Wait… what? Is that justice? Is that capitalism? Is that just the cost of letting children exist in your home? Rizz, Moon, and King Scott debate responsibility, friendship, and whether the real solution is simply moving to a new town and changing your identity. Then we dive into the wildest dating trend we've heard in a while: “Alpine Divorce.” It sounds like a seasonal IPA. It is not. It's apparently when someone strands their partner in the wilderness as punishment. Romantic! Nothing says “I love you” like abandoning someone mid-hike because they forgot a water bottle. We unpack the psychology behind it and question how this is even a thing. Ghosting? Bad. Ghost-lighting? Worse. Alpine Divorce? Congratulations, you're on a watch list. And then — because we care about the people — we establish the official list of karaoke songs that should be considered arrestable offenses. Whitney Houston? Jail. Bohemian Rhapsody? Straight to court. “My Heart Will Go On”? Emotional felony. The crew breaks down the crimes, the charges, and the sentencing guidelines for murdering everyone's ears at your local bar. It's the kind of public service announcement only a true daily comedy show would dare to provide.Between parenting disasters, dating red flags, and musical war crimes, this episode has everything you expect from your favorite St. Louis daily comedy chaos factory. You've been warned. There are some raw materials in the brewing world that are the butt of jokes or customers claim they don't like them because they have heard bad or false things about them. Two brewing ingredients come to mind: Sabro hops, which were released in 2018 and crystal malt, which is used in many styles from English bitters to American amber ales. But are these ingredients really so bad? On the All About Beer podcast today we talk to four guests who will help us demystify these misunderstood members of the brewing world and find out if people's ire is really justified or perhaps we should be looking at Sabro and crystal malt with fresh eyes.Visit AllAboutBeer.com for more podcasts, to read original articles, and to get info on upcoming events.Click here to support independent journalism covering the beer industry. This Episode is Sponsored by:HopsteinerLet's talk brewhouse efficiency: Replacing pellet loads with Salvo cannot only boost aroma density, but reduce trub load and increase beer wart. Beer collaborations are a particularly effective way for brewers to share and learn, but what if you could take that experience and share it with a wider audience? That's the idea behind this episode, recorded shortly after the brew day wrapped on a forthcoming collab brewed by Kelly McKnight at the pilot brewery of New Belgium in Fort Collins, Colorado, along with Ashleigh Carter of Denver's Bierstadt Lagerhaus and Natalie Rose Baldwin of Wayfinder in Portland, Oregon. Throughout, these three accomplished brewers discuss: finding common ground in a recipe and ingredients diving into each others' brew sheets exploring modern techniques such as cool pooling (even with German hops) understanding what qualities of subtler European hop varieties come through from the rub into the finished beer And more. G&D Chillers G&D's new Elite 290 Micro-series is built for brewers who care about sustainability and performance. For White Cane week in February, this year we have a discussion with Elizabeth Lalonde about the recent completion of her Masters Thesis: --An Interpretive Analysis of the Effectiveness of Non-traditional or ‘Structured Discovery' Blindness Rehabilitation in Canada from the Perspective of Blind Service Recipients and teachers This week on Outlook we're speaking with Elizabeth about building confidence as a blind traveler and the difference between route training and the “structured discovery method” we've often spoke about on this show and of which Lalonde teaches at The Pacific Training Centre for the Blind, which she founded and runs on Vancouver Island on the west coast of Canada. She tells us: Structure discovery, it can include routes. Sometimes that's the best way to get somewhere is you wanna learn the route. So it doesn't mean that it excludes more traditional forms of rehabilitation. It just means that it opens the door for other ways of perceiving your environment, learning to perceive your environment in a more holistic way." Elizabeth shares her lived experience of blindness growing up and connecting with an opportunity to “learn blindness skills” training which led her to want to bring the same sort of rehab program to others closer to home. She tells us about the non visual skills they offer at the PTCB and the “Blind People In Charge” program she launched with the help of a grant from the provincial B.C. government. Elizabeth recognises with non visual learning: “When you have sight, you just tend to use it, (you can't help it) so it can distract you from using your other senses to get around and to do things.” We talk about the hesitancy, whether new to blindness or not, for many of us to be afraid of wearing things like sleep shades to remove the distraction of any level of seeing when we're learning how to explore our environment, with all our senses and perceptions, during blindness rehab. We reflect on the types of messages on blindness and early O and M instruction we were given and training we were taught, we highlight the common sense and lived experience in the expression “the blind leading the blind” as sister/co-host Kerry relates that back to her most recent memory of the community and confidence-building that can come from traveling in a group of blind people, and we examine ways of adapting “structure discovery” for the individual and their specific intersectionalities and unique learning styles, Regular Outlook co-host Barry says: “We're getting taught static navigation for a dynamic world,” when it comes to how blind people receive orientation and mobility instruction. This conversational, truly from an international perspective along with our focus on Canada (with the thesis we're featuring for its historical significance to blindness rehabilitation anywhere) episode provides a fairly comprehensive bunch of topics that return, always, to the subject of Elizabeth Lalonde's thesis and our lived experiences with it. We at Outlook want to thank Elizabeth Lalonde for her hard work on presenting us all with a wider window on the landscape of blindness skills training here in Canada, on some more particulars around this thesis, and by doing this on completion of a Master's degree in Community Development from the University of Victoria. Your work on this topic will be an important study and resource of rehabilitation for the blind in Canada and beyond. Through multiple modalities: including literature study and interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA, a qualitative methodology) ) with interviews she conducted with both students and teachers of the “structure discovery model”, Elizabeth paints a clearer picture of the landscape of Canada's attitudes and offerings of blindness skills training. To learn more, check out the contents of Elizabeth's thesis at this link: https://dspace.library.uvic.ca/items/28e4e9ee-884b-44f7-9111-9ff43af95eea
Wrapping up a week of non Ballast Point beers with Jeff and David from Ballast Point as they've been shocasing thier "friends" beers leading up to The Art of Beer happening on March 14th. We end with a beer that has traversed space and time to arrive in the glass we're drinking out of. Societe Brewing's The Visitor is a bright IPA that still has hits of pine with a clean and balanced finish.
The boys drink and review Dogfish Head's Sixty-One, which is an IPA brewed with Pinot Noir grapes, then discuss the idea that AI will make us all wealthy while Pigweed's cat prances around the studio. Elon Musk recently said that AI + robotics will eliminate scarcity to the point that there's no real point in saving for retirement. We'll have "universal high income." It's like the Star Trek vision of the future where all your needs are provided for. Does that make any sense? Can an economy function like that? Will "AI abundance" arrive simultaneously for every human need? Who will pay the taxes? What does "lack of scarcity" really mean? There can be an abundance of food, or healthcare. AI isn't going to make more beachfront. How do we get from here to there? What happens to property rights? Will the people who own the AI share their wealth with everybody else? Why? Who will make them do it? When people start losing jobs (by the millions), how will they live? The idea that we'll tax AI to pay the people who are laid off doesn't make sense. If you tax the AI to pay the displaced workers, what have you gained? The internal contradictions in the optimistic view of an AI-driven future are mind-boggling. The boys try to parse through it all.

That's the rhythm of it. The delivery truck's just pulled away, the sun's already dipping behind the silos, and someone's realised the tap list never got updated. Again. It's the feeling of sprinting toward something that's already halfway gone — but laughing anyway because there's a cold one in your hand and that counts for something. Foam clinging to the glass, condensation sliding down like a slow apology. You missed the moment, sure. But you didn't miss the pour. It's the soundtrack of small-town Fridays and half-finished plans. A day late and a dollar short… beers beers beers. The mates who show up after the raffle's been drawn. The keg that kicks just as the best story starts. The bar light flickering like it's in on the joke. And somehow, despite the timing, despite the short change, there's abundance in repetition. Not perfection — repetition. Another round. Another crack of a can. Another chorus of “cheers” rolling across the room like it's always been right on time. ★ Support this podcast ★
How did Noon Whistle Brewing create a West Coast IPA with bold hop flavor but none of the harsh bite that turns skeptics away? From late hopping techniques and water chemistry to managing bitterness perception and “yeast afterbite,” the Noon Whistle team discusses how drinkability became their competitive advantage. In this episode of the podcast, we share an excerpt from the first session—focused on formulation—featuring Notch founder Chris Lohring, Halfway Crooks cofounder Shawn Cooper, and Abstrax Hops technical sales manager Craig Thomas. Through the course of the conversation, the trio discuss malt choices and process for NA beers, hop usage and different formats, dialing in bitterness, building body without sweetness, adjusting chloride content for fullness, and much more. If this piques your interest, the full webinars are available for viewing on our website: Formulation Fermentation Finishing G&D Chillers A quick word for the brewers out there staring down a broken chiller.
