We saved the best (or worst) for last. Battlefield Earth has a reputation for being one of the most god-awful movies ever made, and we have to admit, it's definitely a possibility. We talk about the things that others have probably talked about before, including the ridiculous Psychlo designs, the terrible plot, multitude of Dutch angles, and we also dive into Scientology a little bit (and how stupid it is, yes we mean that as an insult). We're also drinking Other Half Brewing x Junior's collaboration, the Strawberry Dream double dry-hopped IPA with oat cream and strawberries.Approximate timeline0:00-11:00 Intro11:00-18:00 Beer talk18:00-end Battlefield EarthThat does it for this year's Difficult Films, but we'll be back in a couple weeks with more standard coverage!

484: Matt Gallagher of Half Acre and Suncatcher Believes Small Can Be Sustainable

To some, Chicago's Suncatcher must appear to be a typical neighborhood brewery. The bar is classic Midwest, salvaged from a midcentury tavern. The patio is expansive and inviting, thanks to the plant nursery next door. And the beers come without clever names—just the style, often defined by color, spelled out in plastic letters pressed into the sign board. But when you consider that it was the cofounder of Half Acre who designed and built this neighborhood brewery, it takes on a different meaning. The simplicity that Matt Gallagher has infused into Suncatcher extends from the environment to the beers themselves, and while he's back on the brew deck as the sole brewer, he's chosen to intentionally limit himself. But that doesn't mean sacrificing quality or flavor—in fact, by simplifying, he's able to focus on what the brewery needs to be, and what the beers need to be, and nothing more. In this episode, Gallagher discusses: designing Daisy Cutter so you could smell it from the other end of the bar early challenges in sourcing the hops they wanted the vastly improved growing and processing conditions for today's hops testing the thesis that a small brewery can be sustainable building simple beers with beautiful and expressive ingredients focusing on hospitality and service as much as the beer itself G&D Chillers You know the pain—warm fermenters, stressed yeast, and that sinking feeling when the repair quote lands in your inbox. With refrigerant regulations changing and the cost of obsolete refrigerants skyrocketing, sometimes the fix costs more than the unit's worth. G&D Chillers is there to help, whether you're a small brew pub or large full-scale production brewery. Don't throw good money at bad equipment. Invest in a solution that grows with your brewery—and keeps your tanks cold when it counts. Big thanks to G&D Chillers for supporting this podcast since 2019, reach out to them at gdhillers.com/podcast to learn how they can support your next six years of growth. Berkeley Yeast Berkeley Yeast just launched Dry Tropics London! Our best-selling liquid yeast strain, now with all the ease-of-use benefits of dry yeast. Dry Tropics London delivers the soft, pillowy mouthfeel and juicy character you'd expect from a top-tier London Ale strain, but with a serious upgrade: a burst of thiols that unleash vibrant, layered notes of grapefruit and passion fruit. A lot of brewers love the clean passion fruit you get from Tropics, but they don't want every IPA to be a tropical-fruit bomb. At the dry yeast price point, you can pitch and ditch without breaking the bank. Or, you can co-pitch with your house strain to adjust the intensity of the notes. And with nationwide free shipping, there's never been a better time to try Dry Tropics. Order now at berkeleyyeast.com and experience the ease and impact of Dry Tropics London Yeast. Send us Fan MailA Buddha-shaped beer bottle, a hazy double IPA that hides 9% like it's nothing, and a rapid-fire question game that goes completely off the rails. That's the energy tonight as we're back on the mics after a corrupted file and a couple weeks of real-life chaos, with a promise to keep the drinks cold and the stories honest. We start with Lucky Buddha Pale Lager and get into what actually matters to regular drinkers: aroma, that slight “green bottle” vibe, price, and whether it earns a spot as a daily drinker. From there we catch up on the last two weeks, including yard work, pollen misery, and a live music night seeing Box Elder plus a surprisingly great pierogi pizza that turns into a whole conversation about regional comfort food. Cookout season shows up hard with ideas you can steal: deviled eggs topped with mini hot dogs, smoked street corn dip with a spice surprise, and Texas Twinkies built with jalapeños, cream cheese, Chihuahua cheese, chorizo, and thin bacon on the smoker. Then we talk smash burgers and why small technique changes, like onions smashed into the patty or an onion paste grilled on top, can completely change the bite. After the break, we pour Jackie O's Ritual Destruction (hazy double IPA) and compare it to other fruity hazy favorites, argue about when pumpkin beers will hit shelves, and close with our “Answer These Nuts” segment plus plans for an Allegheny River camping float and upcoming birthdays. Subscribe, share the show with your drinking buddy, and leave us a review. Which beer would you try first, Lucky Buddha or Ritual Destruction?Support the showwww.anotherreasontodrink.com

Meanwhile, Rizz shares the emotional rollercoaster of his son's surprise birthday party after the poor kid spent all day convinced nobody loved him. Nothing says “family bonding” like emotional manipulation followed by chocolate cake. Then comes the story that absolutely broke the internet: a Florida woman gets pulled over for texting while driving… except the officer claims she was holding the phone in her RIGHT HAND. Tiny issue there: she doesn't have a right hand. The bodycam footage somehow gets even more awkward as the cop doubles down harder than a guy trying to explain crypto at Buffalo Wild Wings. A Portland mom grabs a stick and chases an intruder out of her house after hearing threats against her family. Chicago's Hopewell has, from its start, charted a different aesthetic and stylistic path than many of its contemporaries. From the eight-ounce stubby can of Lil' Buddy—it makes a perfect shift beer—to Pocha, the Korean-style lager designed for accompanying food, the beers of Hopewell are tuned to real-life consumption without pretense. In this episode, Bossu discusses: designing and brewing an all-malt Korean-style lager building core beer recipes without imported malts integrating pour style into the design of specific beers the bitterness and flavor impact of carbonation adjusting recipes depending on service style entering the cannabis beverage space with Choom And more. I know you are all hanging out to hear about this and the judgment still hasn't dropped on the NSW Caselaw website (though I hear it's doing the rounds) so here it is. It's really very unedited. In my submission I propose that this episode would have been better if I had Prepared a better document and read the judgment twiceNot had several drinks at the RAC before recordingTook the time to edit itActually researched the things we were inevitably going to discussBut that takes time and time is of the essence. So here it is. I go off on a bit of a ramble about how La Vey satanism is basically edgy libertarianism but I don't really know what I am talking about. Would be keen to look into what the OTO is in a future episode and why cookers are scared of it. I mean, they are scared of everything and the OTO does sound really spooky if you are an idiot. Rod keeps the show on topic well, bless him. Anyway, the episode is about the defo trial and I figure you want it now instead of later - at least Rod was sober.----------------------------------------------------------I also forgot to do the CBCo plug at the start - this is what happens when you don't make a proper document. So I want to assure listeners that much like George Soros, the fine folks at CBCo Brewing are still giving us (me) free beers in exchange for dog like loyalty. While George still claims the cheque is in the mail - and I'm starting to wonder - CBCo are filling our cup (my cup) regularly. We love them. CRP10 probably still works. Natalie Cilurzo joins Herlinda Heras and Daedalus Howell on Brew Ha Ha, to tell us about Russian River Brewing News and upcoming events. Her last time on the show was with Pliny the Younger  back on March 18. Natalie has brought three beers to taste, including Vinnie Cilurzo’s first signature beer, Blind Pig. Herlinda and Natalie were at the Craft Beer Convention in Philadelphia a couple of weeks ago. The industry is contracting. Schlitz beer is closing, in Milwaukee. They have been there for 120 years. Somebody might acquire that brand. Unreasonable Hospitality One of the speakers they heard was Will Guidara. He talked about his book called Unreasonable Hospitality. Natalie is a fan and describes his advice for companies and people in any industry related to hospitality. He used to own 11 Madison Park, a Michelin 3-star restaurant. His approach is to do things for guests that are unexpected. For example, he sent his staff outside to get a hot dog from a street vendor, so he could serve it to his guests at his Michelin restaurant. He overheard their wish and did this to surprise them. ••••Visit Russian River Brewing Co. in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Check out their website and socials for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more.•••• That made Natalie and Vinnie think a lot about the experience that people get from their annual Pliny the Younger release. Natalie remembers a young family there last year and the mom was pregnant, so Natalie gave her a RRBC onesie. The next year, they were back with the baby, wearing the onesie. The little details and personal touches are what make a customer’s experience special memorable. “It’s not just the beer, it’s the experience,” says Herlinda. The first beer they taste today is called Stivo. It’s a Keller Pils that they have made in collaboration with Firestone Walker for about 20 years, although this is the first year that RRBC is actually producing it. It has a dry hoppy flavor, but not like an IPA, what they call German hoppy, not as strong. A Really Fun Busy Summer at Russian River Brewing Natalie grew up around cars and racing, and when they built the location in Windor with a big parking lot, she thought it would be a great place for a car show. So, they are doing that and there are 4 of them on the calendar this summer. One of the cars on display is an original Volkswagen van, owned by the third generation of the family. There will be lots of cars, a chopper sometimes shows up, a fire engine and an old Highway Patrol car too. The NHRA top fuel drag races are coming to Sonoma Raceway and they will display the cars on Wednesday, July 15, before the race, Anton Brown’s top fuel dragster will be on display.

Drink Beer, Think Beer With John Holl

Mild is one of the oldest continuous beer styles in the English speaking world, it was the working class pint, the beer that fueled industrial England, pulled from cask and corner pubs, consumed in volume by people who needed something honest, drinkable and affordable at the end of a long shift. At its peak in the early 20th century, mild accounted for the majority of beer sold in Britain. It wasn't a specialty, it wasn't a conversation piece, it was just beer and then almost disappeared entirely post World War II. By the 1980s mild had been reduced to a footnote. CAMRA waged a decades long campaign just to keep it on life support. So why are we here on a stage or in the grass at Little Beer festival in 2026 treating it like it matters?  Because, the market is quietly telling us something. We're in a moment defined by low and no alcohol growth, a consumer exhaustion with extreme beers, and real hunger for what you can call intentionally simple beers that reward attention rather than demand tolerance.  Mild, a style built on nuance at low ABV, is almost perfectly positioned for this cultural moment. Whether the industry is ready to actually embrace that is another question, and that's what we're here to explore today. This episode is hosted by Blake Tyres of Creature Comforts Brewing Co. If you stop into most breweries and nearly any bar or restaurant in New England today, you're going to see an IPA on the menu, and it will almost certainly be hazy. New England has one of the most distinctive beer cultures in the US. It wasn't always like this, however. In fact, until about fifteen years ago, most New Englanders had never really encountered a hop.The Alchemist's Heady Topper, the subject of today's episode of One Iconic Beer. John Kimmich started The Alchemist in 2003 with his wife Jen, and within months was making a beer that many people credit as the first hazy New England IPA. It's a funny thing about firsts, though. As we'll hear in the interview, Kimmich is uneasy with this description. Heady Topper may have sparked a region-wide culture shift, but it doesn't really resemble the beers that follow. Today we'll hear the story of Heady Topper, why its fans think it's so good, why it was the right beer at the right time, and how serendipity played a starring role in the form of a hurricane, a flood, and a new canning line. In addition to John Kimmich, we'll hear from Jason Alstrom, one of the co-founders of Boston-based BeerAdvocate. In the early days of the internet, the site became a nexus of discussion and organization and helped create the excitement that led to, among other things, the haze craze that would engulf New England. We'll also hear from Andy Crouch, publisher of All About Beer magazine, and a writer who has covered the New England beer scene since moving there in the early 2000s.Visit AllAboutBeer.com for more podcasts, to read original articles, and to get info on upcoming events. 2023 was a sea-change year for several craft breweries who underwent leadership changes. Lawson's Finest Liquids and Rhinegeist Brewery were among the companies who underwent CEO transitions that year.    Lawson's CEO Adeline Druart and Rhinegeist CEO Adam Bankovich discuss entering Year 3 of their respective tenures at the top of those companies in separate featured interviews on the latest edition of the Brewbound Podcast.   In the first conversation, Druart dives into the "ongoing conversation" at the Vermont brewery of "what makes a Lawson's Finest beer a Lawson's Finest beer" and defines what makes a Sunshine brand.   "Really for us, it's IPAs – clear IPAs using Citra hops, and with a very bold flavor profile," she said. "The more conversations we have like those – defining who we are, the more I'd say clear we are moving forward what's on brand, what's off brand."   Druart also discusses the impact of Lawson's community giving programs, accelerating business by moving distribution to Baker Distributing in its home state, the launch of Hop Wired hazy and juicy IPA and much more.   Then, Bankovich explores the anniversary of launching the Cincinnati craft brewery's first NA beer line Ghost, with new offerings to follow. He also explains why launching Fuzzy Bones, a sparkling THC drink, has been a challenging and educational "crash course," following Ohio's ban on intoxicating hemp beverages.   Fuzzy Bones launched in six states, with three additional states expected to follow. Rhinegeist is "trying to stay nimble with it," as a federal ban looms in November.    "I wish that our government officials could learn enough from the past to act quickly because this industry developed so quickly, seemingly out of nowhere," he said. "We just really need a chance to not fall into the trap of Prohibition and instead write proper regulation now and in real time as consumers want these products instead of prohibiting them for years and years and years."   Bankovich also dishes on Rhinegeist's daily hospitality efforts to make guest experiences' special, the growth of the company's core Truth and Cincy Light brand families and several expedited new additions: Half Truth session IPA, limited-time summer offering Cincy Light Watermelon and Sea Salt and Cincy Vodka Soda, the company's first spirit-based offering.   Before the interviews, the Brewbound team reviews that latest news, including: A recent Bump Williams Consulting report on long-tail craft brands finding success; Leadership changes at the American Cider Association; And Boston Beer's 15% ABV Lytt beyond beer creation in glow-in-the-dark, lightbulb-shaped 6.8 oz. containers.

The IPA recently wrapped up its annual conference last week. While payments has a bright future, industry players will need to navigate a complex landscape.   In this episode, Brian Tate, the IPA's CEO, talks about the conference and the lessons learned there.   He discusses what the audience heard from the regulators who spoke, the trends that emerged during the sessions, and what was on attendees' minds as they networked during informal gatherings at the conference.   As Brian mentioned, listeners can learn more about the world of payments by attending one of our upcoming events, including our IPA Payments Policy Briefing being held at the Bancorp's Offices in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on July 9 and our upcoming Compliance Boot Camp being held at Discover's Headquarters outside of Chicago on September 10th.   If you are interested in closed-loop cards, then join Ben Jackson at the 2026 Education Forum Hosted by the Retail Gift Card Association and Best Buy on June 10th at Best Buy Headquarters in Richfield, Minnesota.  He will be speaking about the role of gift cards in the world of Shopping 3.0 and there will be sessions on the future of the gift card industry with speakers addressing how artificial intelligence will affect the future of shopping, fraud prevention, and the world as a whole.  This podcast was recorded on May 7, 2026. There was a time when "adjunct" meant "cheap beer." One of America's largest breweries even paid millions of dollars to run television commercials during the Super Bowl accusing another of America's largest breweries of using worse adjuncts than they themselves used.Oh, what a world! But for craft breweries, an ingredient is an ingredient. What if adjuncts added flavor?  What if adjuncts actually cost more than malted barley?  What if adjuncts could tell a story of time and place?Corn and rice aren't cheap anymore.  They have a history.  They tell a story.  And good breweries know how to use ingredients to tell the story of great beer. Visit AllAboutBeer.com for more podcasts, to read original articles, and to get info on upcoming events.Click here to support independent journalism covering the beer industry. This Episode is Sponsored by:All About BeerAt All About Beer, we're honored to share the stories that define the beer community, and we couldn't do it without the generous support of our underwriting sponsors. If you've read any mainstream news coverage of craft beer over the past year, it's likely you've seen something about the “death” of craft beer. The apocalyptic tones and pearl-clutching over the industry's recent economic woes mostly lack context, often painting a complex and diverse industry with a single brush—yet the stories continue. In his recent State of the Industry presentation at the Craft Brewers Conference in Philadelphia, Brewers Association president and CEO Bart Watson made an effort to acknowledge the real challenges facing the industry while also dispelling some of the more hyperbolic assertions often seen in popular media. In this episode, we unpack the data and arguments for a more nuanced and accurate understanding of the current state of craft beer. Through the episode, Watson discusses: the question of how many breweries the market can sustain how the long tail of breweries creates noisy data often not captured by industry analytics sectors where craft beer is growing the importance of investing in experience changing the narrative and capturing the breadth of craft beer today understanding who your customer is and what your value proposition should be the seemingly contradictory trends driving the top and value tiers in the industry And more. Drawing on research from the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, Peter Field's IPA databank analysis, and perspectives from Mark Ritson and Roger Martin, we unpack a simple but uncomfortable truth:Brand purpose works… rarely. We explore why purpose has become so dominant despite weak commercial evidence, how industry incentives have turned it into a “comfort blanket,” and why the outliers like Patagonia and Dove don't translate to most brands.Along the way, we break down:The “say–do gap” between what consumers claim and how they actually buyWhy most purpose strategies show little to no impact on market shareThe hidden downside of poorly executed purpose campaignsHow purpose often replaces the harder work of real positioningThe three conditions required for purpose to actually work (and why most brands don't meet them)This is not a takedown for the sake of it. It's a reframing.Because the real question isn't whether purpose is good or bad. It's whether your organization has earned the right to use it.If not, you may be trading growth for a story that simply sounds good.Enjoy the show!TakeawaysConsumers often express a desire for brands with purpose, but this doesn't always translate to purchasing behavior.Brand purpose has become an unfalsifiable idea in marketing, often lacking robust evidence. The say-do gap highlights the difference between consumer sentiment and actual buying decisions.Purpose campaigns can generate emotional engagement but may not lead to increased market share. Most brands adopting purpose strategies do not see meaningful commercial outcomes. The effectiveness of purpose campaigns varies significantly based on execution quality.Patagonia and Dove are often cited as successful purpose-driven brands, but their models are not easily replicable.Real purpose requires genuine commitment and often involves sacrifices.Purpose can enhance employee satisfaction and brand loyalty, but it is not a direct marketing strategy. The industry often conflates purpose with marketing effectiveness, leading to misconceptions about its value.Chapters:00:00 - Introduction02:29 - The Evolution of Purpose in Marketing06:31 - Research Findings on Brand Purpose10:51 - The Complexity of Purpose Campaigns14:40 - The Outlier Problem: Patagonia and Dove20:00 - Understanding the Value of Purpose23:16 - Conclusion: The Reality of Brand PurposeReferencesTait, V., Beal, V., Dawes, J., & Sharp, B. The Philadelphia beer tour rolls on! In Episode 34 of Matt Likes Beer, Matt cracks open Blow the Whistle IPA from 2SP Brewing Company—another sports-inspired selection courtesy of Dave. With a nod to Philly's die-hard fan culture (and a little Eagles energy mixed in), this IPA sets the stage for a deeper dive into what makes the style so beloved… and so polarizing. Along the way, Matt reflects on his own IPA-heavy lineup and tackles a question many craft beer fans have encountered: why do IPAs seem to attract so much criticism? From social media jokes to real-world beer conversations, he explores the love-it-or-hate-it reputation of the style while making a strong case for its diversity and creativity. Of course, the heart of the episode is the beer itself. Expect a full BJCP-style breakdown, highlighting: Bright citrus-forward aromas with lemon and lime zest A layered hop profile featuring Idaho 7 and Cashmere A smooth, slightly sweet finish that bends (and tests) style expectations A final score of 42, making it one of the standout beers in the series so far It's part tasting, part rant, and part love letter to one of craft beer's most debated styles. Grab a pint and join the conversation—especially if you've ever had to defend your love of IPAs.

The enzyme converts the precursors in barley to free thiols that smell and taste like passionfruit and grapefruit. It's super clean. No off-flavors like burnt rubber or other sulfurous notes. Just tropical aromatics. You don't have to do anything unusual either, like mash hopping. Just pitch dry Tropics and supercharge your hazy IPA.Long Trail BreweryLong Trail Brewing has been living the trail life for over 3 decades and continues to keep it fresh and celebrate the great outdoors - best enjoyed with a cold beer at the end of the day.  This year, Long Trail is upping its commitment to trails by dedicating $15,000 to Vermont trail non-profits as part of its Ales For Trails Programs.  So, one could say that drinking Long Trail beer is a form of community service - and we thank you for that. Acquired while in Wisconsin, these five IPAs span the map and keep us guessing long past the end of the episode. A third space is a place besides work and home. These function as many things: meeting room, church, dance hall, gym, clubhouse, etc. It's a space to get away, meet new people and focus on your passions and interests. Classic third spaces have been disappearing in the 21st century but nowadays, brewery tasting rooms are filling that void, catering to all sorts of people where the event is primary and beer is the perk. "I'm not suggesting that repression has lost its place as a fundamental defense mechanism. Repression remains central, coherent, and fundamental to the founding of the unconscious. It is what makes certain contents inaccessible to consciousness, and what we access as psychoanalysts through dreams, play, symptoms, and associations. That remains true. What I was observing, and I'm still observing more now, is something different. When I see children and adolescents that are more capable to work on a task while doing homework, and at the same time listening to music, and at the same time texting with somebody - I don't think that they are real. This is my point. I don't think they are real. This multitasking way of living is part of life today… The clinical question for us becomes this - when does this multiplicity become a symptom? When does it interfere with the capacity for depth, for intimacy, for a sustained emotional contact?  I think that this is what we need to see, to study and to differentiate in our consulting room."    Episode Description: We consider how changes in our culture may impact the individual's intrapsychic space and from that the nature of the psychoanalytic encounter. Virginia comments on the diminishing of the paternal symbolizing function and with that a change in the 'rites of passage' that adolescents traverse - now the rituals are "created by the young people themselves" as contrasted with those passed down by their elders. This, she feels, has resulted in "intimacy becoming spectacle" and for many, the analytic session is where "the construction of intimacy may begin."  She shares clinical material with us from 40 years ago and contrasts the nature of her interventions with her contemporary treatments. Now, "I appreciate the mystery in the process and that we create meaning with the patient." Virginia closes with seeing analytic treatment as "an invitation to a process of thinking that, to remain alive, must be rethought."   Our Guests: Virginia Ungar M.D., training analyst at the Buenos Aires Psychoanalytic Association (APdeBA). She specializes in child and adolescent analysis, was the Chair of the IPA's Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis Committee (COCAP) and of the IPA Committee for Integrated Training. She was awarded a Konex of Platinum in 2016. She is the former President of the International Psychoanalytic Association (2017-2021).    Recommended Readings:  Etchegoyen,  H. Matt Topping of Norfolk, VA's COVA Brewing has a knack for winning medals with his fruit beer, but they aren't what you think—from the full fruit refermentation to the light herbal spicing, he's found an equation that's equally successful on draft in the taproom and on the final table at World Beer Cup. From slightly higher pH to low mash temps for fermentable wort to frozen purée to Ebbegarden kveik for the primary fermentation, he's built a systemic approach to both the base gose and to the fruits and spices he layers on top. In this episode, Topping discusses: using Lactobacillus Plantarum from Goodbelly for souring wort low mash temperatures for greater fermentability using frozen rather than aseptic purée to maintain the fresh edge of fruit flavor strategically adding salt and hibiscus in the brite to dial in perfect amounts cleverly pairing fruit and spice flavors like rosemary lemon, passionfruit hibiscus, and more proper temperature for herb steeping brewing with difficult ingredients like watermelon and strawberry controlling finished pH for greater function And more.
