Surprisingly, many older adults approaching retirement feel a sense of dread – even when they have sufficient financial security and are reasonably healthy. In a project sponsored by Harvard Business School, Teresa Amabile's research team spent a decade researching retirement to understand people's attitudes toward, decisions about, and experiences of retiring. She and her colleagues, Lotte Bailyn (MIT), Marcy Crary (Bentley University), Douglas T. Hall, and Kathy Kram (both of Boston University), interviewed 120 knowledge workers in successful companies, including some who were still working, some who had retired, and some who were about to enter the retirement transition. The 14 people approaching retirement in the near term became the “Stars” of this research because they agreed to be interviewed multiple times as they finished their careers, officially retired,In this episode, you'll discover: The “work” of retiring and how to approach the necessary tasks in a way that increases the likelihood of a smooth transition into a satisfying retirement life. The major identity challenges people face in retirement, and some creative ways you can meet those challenges. The upheavals to personal and professional relationships that can occur during this life transition and how you can maintain and build a mutually supportive relationship network post-retirement. About Teresa M. Amabile: Teresa M. Amabile is the Edsel Bryant Ford Professor of Business Administration, Emerita, at Harvard Business School. Her most recent book, Retiring: Creating a Life That Works for You, presents insights from a decade of research on the psychological, social, and life restructuring challenges of retiring. Her colleagues Lotte Bailyn, Marcy Crary, Douglas T. Hall, and Kathy E. Kram collaborated on that work. Before turning her research interests into retirement transition, Teresa devoted over 40 years to researching creativity and innovation. Extending that work, she studied how everyday life inside organizations can influence people and their creativity by affecting inner work life - the confluence of motivation, emotions, and perceptions. The findings of that research appear in her coauthored book with Steven Kramer, The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work. Teresa's work has appeared in over 100 scholarly journal articles and a variety of other outlets, including Harvard Business Review. She has presented her work to audiences in a variety of settings, including Pixar, Genentech, TEDx Atlanta, Apple, Pfizer, and the World Economic Forum in Davos. She consults with companies and nonprofits, and has served on several boards. She has received a variety of awards, including the Distinguished Scholar Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Academy of Management's Organizational Behavior Division, and election to the 2024 Thinkers50 Hall of Fame. In our exploration of Disney Animation and Pixar, we seek to uncover the underlying virtues embodied by the parental figures within these beloved narratives. Throughout our discourse, we will delve into the complex depictions of parental roles, from the malevolent step-parents often portrayed as antagonists to the nurturing figures who, despite their flaws, provide significant emotional support. We will highlight the evolution of these characters over time, reflecting societal changes and the increasing recognition of the importance of nuanced portrayals in storytelling. Amid our examination, we will also celebrate the redeeming qualities found in many of these characters, ultimately affirming the enduring relevance of family bonds in animated storytelling. In this episode, the discourse centers around the intricate and often contentious portrayals of parental figures in Disney and Pixar films, particularly focusing on the prevailing themes of step-parents, deceased parents, and overbearing guardians. The speakers, Joshua Noel and Pastor Will Rose, embark on a comprehensive analysis of these archetypes, tracing their evolution from early depictions characterized by antagonism and neglect to more nuanced portrayals in contemporary narratives. This thematic exploration reveals how animated narratives not only reflect societal changes regarding family dynamics but also serve as vehicles for moral and ethical lessons for younger audiences. For instance, the episode scrutinizes the transformation of the step-parent trope, highlighting its shift from the stereotypical villainous stepmother to more supportive and complex figures, as exemplified by characters in films such as 'Big Hero 6' and 'Lilo & Stitch'. Moreover, the discussion delves into the pervasive trope of deceased parents, a hallmark of Disney storytelling that has resonated deeply with audiences. The speakers elucidate how the absence of parental figures catalyzes the protagonists' journeys towards self-discovery and resilience, drawing parallels with films like 'Bambi', 'The Lion King', and 'Coco'. These narratives not only evoke emotional responses but also foster discussions about loss, grief, and personal growth, thereby providing young viewers with a framework to navigate their own experiences of familial disruption and emotional turmoil. The episode culminates in a reflective examination of the overbearing parent trope, wherein characters like King Triton and Marlin are critiqued for their excessive control, which often undermines the autonomy necessary for their children's development. This critical analysis invites listeners to consider the balance between parental protection and the essential freedom required for growth, ultimately encouraging a deeper appreciation for the narrative complexities within these beloved animated films.Takeaways: In this episode, we explore the parental tropes prevalent within Disney and Pixar films, analyzing their impact on storytelling. The discussion emphasizes the evolution of Disney's portrayal of parents, transitioning from traditional portrayals to more nuanced narratives. We delve into the significance of step-parents, dead parents, and overbearing parents within animated films, highlighting their roles in character development. The hosts express their personal reflections on how these parental figures resonate with their own experiences and parenting philosophies. We share in harmony the catchphrase, " We love you, and there ain't nothing you can do about it.".Check out the rest of our 'Finding the Good...' series:https://player.captivate.fm/collection/37fa0c3f-55f4-4cd4-b112-ca5476583ffa.Listen to all of our Disney episodes:

Do you really need animals for something to make sense in Disney's Animal Kingdom? This week, Stephen explores that question with a proposal inspired by a Pixar movie you might have skipped. While it did not make a huge cultural splash, Elemental has more in common with Animal Kingdom than you might think, thanks to its themes of nature, balance, and environmental connection.Set in one of the park's most overlooked areas, this concept reimagines the space with color, creativity, and just the right amount of chaos. The Idiots weigh in with their thoughts, reactions, and a few puns along the way. It is the final full pitch of Season 3, and a great reminder that even the quieter corners of the Disney universe can spark big ideas.Send us a textSupport the showDon't forget to check us out on Instagram!

Behind successful films is an army of people creating the magic we see on screen. In the case of animated films, that means 24 painstaking frames per second to bring characters to life — ones our kids and we have come to love. One of those creators is a South African born in Pretoria who moved from satellite imagery at CSIR to become a digital effects artist at Pixar. Ferdi Scheepers has worked on The Incredibles, Toy Story, and most recently, Disney's sci-fi adventure Elio. Now on his 19th film for Pixar, he told Biznews in an interview that he was also part of the team behind Piper, the Oscar-winning short that took home Best Animated Short Film in 2017.

Two women from Australia and Germany tell Ella Al-Shamahi about their work in robotics: from tackling loneliness with humanoid companions to making industrial robots more accessible. Australian Grace Brown began building robots at 15, but it was the isolation of pandemic lockdown - five months without human contact - that led her to create Abi, a friendly humanoid companion robot inspired by Disney and Pixar characters. Working in secret while her family believed she was completing her master's degree, Grace instead launched Andromeda Robotics from her bedroom, testing early prototypes in Melbourne nursing homes to help combat loneliness. Brit Cruise—educator, filmmaker, and producer of Pixar in a Box—takes us on a journey through the fusion of storytelling, science, and education. From his early days editing videos with dual VCRs to his innovative work at Khan Academy, Brit reveals how deep focus, analog creativity, and a love for explanation helped shape his approach to teaching complex subjects through immersive visuals. With storytelling as the core, he shares how each lesson in Pixar in a Box connects school-taught concepts like math and physics to the movie magic of Pixar, showing students that what they learn can have real, creative application. Throughout the conversation, Brit explores his philosophy that creativity is “the ability to deal with unknowns,” emphasizing iteration, structure, and the power of simplicity. He also gives us a glimpse into the upcoming storytelling curriculum at Pixar in a Box, where students will storyboard their own shorts from scratch. For filmmakers, educators, and curious minds alike, this episode is a masterclass in how to bring clarity, authenticity, and joy into the learning and creative process.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.
This fall marks the 30th anniversary of one of the most groundbreaking films ever. Toy Story debuted in 1995 to critical success and public adoration. Pixar's first film, and also the first fully computer animated production, is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. It also boasts the first time we saw the collaboration between Randy Newman and Pixar, who would later compose the scores for and write songs for many subsequent movies, including A Bug's Life and Monsters Inc. On this episode of Notably Disney, host Brett Nachman welcomes on podcaster Jonathan Goodman, host of the Music Behind the Magic podcast. It's a great podcast with conversations featuring composers, musicians, and those who study music, among other individuals. Today Jonathan and Brett deconstruct what makes Toy Story's music so special, in addition to where the film lands in their hearts. Brian forces Nate to watch two new kids movie trailers... one from Pixar, and one from China. Pixar's new movie Elio flopped harder than anything that's come before. The top-grossing animated movie this year comes from China... it's Ne Zha 2, and it's made 2.2 billion (!) dollars. The guys talk about why Ne Zha 2's trailer is better than Elio's. But it still kinda stinks: The last couple years for children's animation has been very poor. Artificial Intelligence makes you dumber, but it will soon replace this level of bad production. Find out what an AI future might look like on this episode of Stories Are Soul Food.
