Episode #548: Sunda Khin shares a remarkable family journey through contemporary Burmese history. She starts with her father, U Chan Htoon, who suggested that a young Indian businessman named S.N. Goenka learn meditation from Sayagyi U Ba Khin to cure his migraines. Growing up as the daughter of the country's first Supreme Court Justice, she recalls spending time in General Ne Win's home during the "Caretaker Government" years. Ne Win's coup in 1962 marked a shift, leading to economic turmoil and loss of civil liberties, including the arrest of her father. As a means for explaining the many challenges that have befallen her country since 1958, she explains the Burmese Buddhist concept of "tha gyarr thar tha nar," which is a Burmese prophecy that signifies the end of the Buddha's protective period after 2,500 years.Sunda Khin shares several international situations that her father was involved with. The most complex of these was when South Vietnamese members of the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB) demanded the organization stand up against Ngo Dinh Diem's discrimination of the country's Buddhist minority. The US was concerned that this move could weaken their ally against rising Communist influence in the region, and indeed, that the influential WFB might be falling under Communist control. U Chan Htoon was making some headway is mediating this crisis, but unfortunately, before it could be resolved, Ne Win had him arrested, perhaps out of a political fear of his popularity and influence.Sunda Khin also describes her father's rather unexpected acquisition of a lakefront property, which was later inherited by Aung San Suu Kyi, and where she endured decades of house arrest.And she discusses her childhood friendship with Louisa Bensen, who transformed from a beauty queen to a Karen insurgent leader, and their involvement together in the democracy movement many years later.“A lot of things have happened, but I have a lot of hope for things to change,” she says regarding the current resistance movement. “I might not see it right now, or before I die, but I'mhoping that it will change and that the people will be able to have their own government and their freedom. That is my hope.”

In this episode, host Stephen Diggins and wood floor historical restoration expert Michael Purser of The Rosebud Company in Atlanta take a deep dive into wood floor finishes: the rise of urethane finishes, which helped revive wood flooring after wall-to-wall carpet nearly crushed the trade; how homeowners drove the change because they were tired of the constant upkeep of wax floors; and the shift from oil-modified urethanes to early waterborne finishes and later hardwax oils; and the need to educate clients instead of allowing them to blame the finish for every problem. The pair also examine the difference between true restoration and ordinary refinishing—how restoration means protecting original wood and removing surface buildup without sacrificing historic material, often through what he calls “Passive Refinishing” rather than sanding. Purser challenges romantic ideas about old finishes, noting that historic wax, shellac, oil, and varnish systems were often labor-intensive, fragile, and unattractive unless maintained by wealthy households with help. He also explains the nuances of museum and preservation work, where every mark, patch, and “witness” area can carry historical meaning, and the ultimate sin would be to make the wood flooring look brand new. Tuesday, March 26, Governor Inslee vetoed section 6 of the SB 5784 to create an elk collaring pilot program with a data share agreement that farmers could access to track elk before they cross private property lines and cause damage to crops. The vetoed section was replaced with a cooperative agreement between Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Yakama Tribe. Additionally, SB 5784, increases overall funding for farmers who suffer damage from deer and elk, while capping individual claims for damaged crops at $30,000. “The Governor's solution to section 6 of the bill is concerning as the cooperative agreement provides no assurances that farmers will receive data from the collaring pilot program,” said Caleb Gwerder, WFB's Governmental Affairs Coordinator. “Without the data share agreement, farmers will continue to lose the battle against wildlife damages to crops.”

On Thursday, March 7, the gavel fell to close Washington State's 2024 Legislative Session. The various budgets have passed, a slew of bills are now working their way over to the Governor's desk, and Legislators are packing their bags to head home for the interim.   While there is always more work to do, this is a wonderful time to pause for a moment and reflect on the great progress and positive steps that Washington Farm Bureau was able to make during the 2024 legislative session. Washington State Farm Bureau expresses concern over California's Advanced Clean Fleets rule and subsequent litigation. As Washington is linked to "the motor vehicle emission standards of the state of California," WFB is watching this closely.

Stuart from Great Escape Games joins us to talk about his journey from Games Workshop store manager to Wild West gunslinger. As well as running the Cardiff store, Stuart also had a couple of his armies featured in White Dwarf and even won a WFB staff tournament whilst working at GW. These days, Stuart has traded in his red jersey for a Stetson, as one of the big focuses of Great Escape Games is Dead Man's Hand. The Washington Department of Ecology issued a decision denying Washington Farm Bureau and the Washington Trucking Associations' formal Petition for Rulemaking that would ensure that motor vehicle fuel used exclusively for agricultural purposes and fuels used for transporting agricultural products on public highways are exempt from coverage under the Climate Commitment Act, as is required by law. This report is in response to some recent false narratives placing the blame that farmers continue to face the carbon price at the feet of fuel distributors. The Department of Ecology has the mandate to provide for this carbon price exemption and they continue to fail in this mandate.  WFB has issued a petition for rulemaking with Ecology and the department has until August 15th to respond. We continue to wait on their response.
