Watching biathlon on NBC during the 2018 Winter Olympics inspired New England native Jim Becker to participate in the sport. Today, Dr. Jim Becker is leading an innovative biomechanics research project with the U.S. Biathlon Team, which could make a big difference at the 2026 Winter Games in Italy. Heartbeat met with Becker to discuss his innovative Montana State University program and how it's helping American biathletes.Becker vividly remembers tuning into the Olympics on NBC in 2018. “It was just so cool to watch how things could change in an instant, right? One athlete is leading the race. They come in to shoot. They miss a target. All of a sudden, they're on the penalty loop. Somebody else goes out in the lead. Right? All the way up to the last shoot. “You didn't really know what was going to happen. It was just exciting the entire time. Also, as an athlete, you kind of really appreciated the fitness of these individuals and how hard they're working and how fast they're moving. And I've come to appreciate that even more, you know, really getting to know the sport.”Today, Becker works in kinesiology – the study of human movement. “From a biomechanical perspective, we're looking at what are the forces that generate that movement? What are the forces that are applied to your body during that movement?”The long and short of it is that Becker and his team study human movement to give athletes optimal tactics to capitalize on every single movement.Over the past few seasons, his Montana State University biomechanics research team has collected extensive data from video and other tools, analyzed it, and provided feedback to athletes and coaches. How can it work in practice? Becker discusses how video of athletes on a given course can provide data to offer tactical advice on how to ski that section faster or more efficiently, thereby conserving energy. And, yes, it really works! From Soldier Hollow to Lake Placid, Vuokatti to Antholz, Becker's student researchers are making a difference for U.S. biathletes. If you like to geek out a bit on the science of sport, this is your podcast.Join us for season six, episode three with Dr. Jim Becker to learn more about how the U.S. Biathlon Team is shaving seconds and shooting straighter thanks to innovative data analysis.

416: Denver's "Olympics That Never Happened" - With Adam Berg

In the late 1960s, Denver's business and political leaders were convinced they had secured the ultimate prize in international sport: the 1976 Winter Olympic Games. With the backing of the US Olympic Committee and a successful bid before the International Olympic Committee, Colorado seemed poised to showcase itself on the world stage. But just two years later, that dream collapsed in spectacular fashion — when the state's voters did the unthinkable, and told the Olympics to go elsewhere. This week, we explore the fascinating saga of the “Olympics that never happened” with cultural historian and UNC Greensboro professor Adam Berg, author of "The Olympics That Never Happened: Denver '76 and the Politics of Growth." Berg examines how an elite coalition of boosters and officials promised a glittering event, only to face escalating costs, shaky logistics, environmental concerns, and — most importantly — a grassroots multi-issue opposition movement that united environmentalists, taxpayer advocates, and suburban "NIMBY" homeowners. It's a story that goes far beyond sport — one about power, growth, democracy, and the limits of civic boosterism in a rapidly changing/modernizing Colorado. Berg reveals how the defeat of the Games energized a new political consciousness, launched the career of future governor Richard Lamm, and reshaped how host cities and the IOC think about public consent for mega-events. It's one of the most remarkable “what-ifs” in Olympic history — and a story whose impact still resonates today. + + +   SUPPORT THE SHOW: Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable The "Good Seats" Store: https://www.teepublic.com/?ref_id=35106 BUY THE BOOK (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!): "The Olympics That Never Happened: Denver '76 and the Politics of Growth": https://amzn.to/48moE7T SPONSOR THANKS (AND SUPPORT THE SHOW!):  Royal Retros (10% off promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 Old School Shirts.com (10% off promo code: GOODSEATS): https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats FIND AND FOLLOW: Linktree: https://linktr.ee/GoodSeatsStillAvailable Web: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ Bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/goodseatsstillavailable.com X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/good-seats-still-available/

Sanctioned by the International Skating Union (ISU), the World Championships are considered the most prestigious event in figure skating. Medals were awarded in men's singles, women's singles, pair skating, and ice dance. The competition determined the entry quotas for each skating federation at the 2022 World Championships and was the first qualifying event for the 2022 Winter Olympics. The World Championships were the only ISU Championship event held during the 2020–21 season, while the European Championships, Four Continents Championships, and World Junior Championships were all cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The event was held without spectators, while attendees at the competition remained in a bubble – that is, in a cluster made up exclusively of individuals who have been thoroughly tested and were unlikely to spread infection – throughout the event.Nathan Chen of the United States won the men's event, Anna Shcherbakova of Russia won the women's event, Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov of Russia won the pairs event, and Victoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov of Russia won the ice dance event. Because of a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, all Russian skaters competed as representatives of the Figure Skating Federation of Russia (FSR).This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:19 UTC on Sunday, 12 October 2025.For the full current version of the article, see 2021 World Figure Skating Championships on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Matthew.

In this episode, I'm speaking with Roy Ratnavel, a retired financial services executive and the author of the #1 Canadian national bestselling book Prisoner #1056.Roy's philosophy for life seems simple but I think it's a hard one for most of us to adopt: fix yourself before you fix the world. If you're a good husband, you raise good kids. Good households create good communities. Strong communities build strong societies. Strong societies make stronger countries. And I think Canada needs a lot of this at the moment. Everything is ground up, not top down. The government can't control what goes on in your head or within the four walls of your home. No regulation can stop that. So it comes down to individuals—not as a selfish notion, but as a recognition that you need to fix your flaws before pointing out others' shortcomings.Roy spent a decade after arriving in Canada blaming everyone else for his struggles. At 31, he realized he was the problem. He went to war with the man in the mirror, sought therapy for PTSD, and completely changed his approach to life.Roy and I chat about my biggest lessons from reading his book. We also explore:Why the 2010 Winter Olympics was the most Canadian he'd ever feltHow Canada can unite people across differencesWhy we need to lower the barrier but not the barMoral exhibitionism vs. real solutionsLying to yourself versus being honest about mistakes

Happy Monday. It's time to get Mighty! Ryan is here to help review the 1993 classic, Rookie of the Year. ABOUT COOL RUNNINGS:When a Jamaican sprinter is disqualified from the Olympic Games, he enlists the help of a dishonored coach to start the first Jamaican Bobsled Team.AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR COOL RUNNINGS:October 1, 1993 | TheatersCAST & CREW OF COOL RUNNINGS:Leon as Derice BannockDoug E. Doug as Sanka CoffieRawle D. Lewis as Junior BevilMalik Yoba as Yul BrennerJohn Candy as Irving “Irv” BlitzerBRAN'S COOL RUNNINGS SYNOPSIS: We're in Jamaica, and it's not quite bobsled time. We meet Jamaican sprinter Derice running through town. It's November 1987, and Derice is preparing to qualify for the Olympics. He runs until he reaches the pushcart competition, where his best friend Sanka competes in the big pushcart race. Sanka crashes, but no problem—Derice keeps running. It's time for the qualifying race. Derice is the clear favorite. The top four finishers will represent Jamaica in the Olympics. Unfortunately, the runner next to him, Junior, stumbles and takes Derice down with him.Derice tries to convince the Olympic committee leader to rerun the race, but it's a no-go. On his way out, he notices a picture of his late father standing next to another man. He asks who it is, and learns that it's Irv Blitzer, a fellow gold medalist who once competed in bobsledding. Irv lives in Jamaica now, working as a bookie and living a miserable life.It takes a while, but Derice finally wears him down, and Blitzer agrees to give him a shot. They gather a group of people together, but Blitzer scares them off by showing a reel of bobsled crashes. By the time it ends, the room is empty—except for one of the other runners who fell with Junior, a grumpy guy named Yul. The problem is, there's no such thing as a three-man bobsled team. That's when Junior shows up. Yul tries to fight him when he walks in, but—like it or not—that's their squad. They get to work, and after a lot of crashing and falling, they finally manage to get into the bobsled in under six seconds. Now they need funding. After failing to land a sponsor, they try random fundraisers, but still fall short. Junior steps up and sells his fancy car to cover the rest of the costs. To Calgary they go. Blitzer registers the team and borrows a rundown bobsled from a former teammate. The Jamaicans struggle to adapt to, well, ice. Derice talks to an opponent who warns him that Blitzer is holding him back—that he hasn't been the same since he was caught cheating.Meanwhile, the other teammates get into a bar fight at a honky-tonk. Derice gives them a pep talk about locking in and focusing. It's time for qualifying, and Blitzer surprises them with their very own uniforms. They need to make it under 60 seconds—and THEY DO IT!They celebrate by painting their sled and naming it Cool Runnings. But soon after, they receive a letter: they've been disqualified. Blitzer storms into the rules committee meeting, insisting they not penalize the team for his past mistakes. After deliberation, the committee reinstates them. It's Olympic time. Back home, everyone watches as they march in the opening ceremonies. Junior's dad tries to pull him back home, but Junior stands up to him at last. The team's first run on the track is a disaster, and they finish dead last. Derice tries copying the Swiss team's methods, but Sanka pushes back—telling him they need to be themselves. On the second day, they race in their own style and finish eighth.During their final race, a loose screw causes one of the bobsled's blades to detach, sending the sled crashing and flipping over. Determined to finish, the team lifts the sled and carries it across the finish line. The crowd erupts in applause—including Junior's father. The epilogue explains that the team returned to Jamaica as heroes, and came back four years later to the Winter Olympics to compete as equals.
