It's the story of Bladon Lines – in my opinion it's the best episode I've ever produced (42:30) Thanks to all of the following for their kind words about it: Nicola Anderson, Debbie Marshall, Jilly Hooper, Nico Stanford, Victoria Clay, Kirsten Nicholl, Matt Hayes Lesley Glass, Fiona Parkhurst, Colin Barnett, Craig Mayhew, Giles Helbert, Diane Palumbo, Joanna Yellowlees-Bound, Martin Carver, Alex Irwin, Andrew Brannan, Mike Greenland, James Buist and Snowheads MikePow and Kenzie. I was most touched to receive this message from George Lines, son of co-founder Mark Lines, who tragically died in a car accident in 1990: "I very much enjoyed this, Iain. I still ski each year in my dad's parrot onesie and regularly get pulled over by people keen to share fond BL memories. A couple of years ago in Val D'Isere, one group told me that they are all friends because their parents had met doing seasons with BL and they still all ski together now. You and the contributors captured that sense of community so well." There are now 268 episodes of The Ski Podcast to catch up with. We're the kind of people who'd lick a glacier just to say we've “explored it cold.” No matter what we're talking about—be it cheese, space travel, or ancient plumbing—we'll somehow loop it back to the environment. And yes, between two questions, we casually teleport 11,000 miles—from croissants in Paris to kiwis in the Bay of Plenty. Our carbon footprint is basically a world tour.Margot, from Paris, France is the listener setting the first question today. “What is the significance of pilgrimage in different religions?”Alex thinks pilgrimages are just fancy holidays with extra soul-searching. Stuart's like, “Pilgrimage? Could be a museum binge or a walk to your nan's—whatever moves you.” William treats Finland like his personal Zen dojo. Alex says you don't even need to leave your sofa—just vibe deeply. Stuart reckons all pilgrimages, religious or not, are just brain space with a passport. William's in it for the emotional detox. Environmentally? Alex hugs trees locally. Stuart reads the fine print before jumping on the eco-bandwagon. William wants pilgrimages with less carbon and more conscience.Ryan, from Bay Of Plenty, New Zealand sets the next question. “Does the concept of fate or destiny play a role in the meaning of life and choices we make?”Alex treats destiny like a cosmic suggestion box—no proof, but hey! Stuart's into fate with a side of free will, like life's a GPS with optional detours. William's not buying it—he's Team DIY Life Plan. Alex likes spreadsheets over spontaneity. Stuart says embracing life's chaos is liberating, like nihilism but with better PR. William, after hearing the others, realizes he's never properly Googled “destiny” and might give it a second thought. Eco twist? Alex says ponder fate while hugging a tree. Stuart suggests debating destiny to save the planet. William wants to slow-cook his existential crisis and see if it's compostable. The video link of the race William refers to which was when Australian Steven Bradbury won gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUi4-H6hfw8What do you make of this discussion? He's also an entrepreneur in a life that has always been on the go.Chris Chelios drops by for a fun chat with Neil and Vic IN THIS EPISODE:[01:38] - The Happy Gilmore 2 experience where Chris played a non-speaking role as a henchman alongside fellow NHLer Sean Avery.[04:07] - Chris shares the story of when Avery moved into his house when the two were UHL teammates during the 2004-05 NHL lockout. That Avery wasn't the ideal house guest would be an understatement.[06:06] - Aside from the final seven games of his NHL career as a member of the Atlanta Thrashers, Cheli shares the significance of playing the other 1644 games with three of the "Original Six" teams, Montreal, Chicago and Detroit.[09:21] - How Cheli wound up with number 7 in Chicago with some additional backstory on him wearing 24 in Detroit.[10:34] - Playing for Scotty Bowman and Mike Keenan[13:46] - Cheli trashes Keenan's office.[15:36] - With the Winter Olympics coming up in Italy in 2026, Chris talks about the differences competing as an olympic amateur in 1984 on the heels of the "Miracle on Ice" team and as a professional in 1998, 2002 and 2006. He also notes that though many on that 1980team did not have star careers, the doors that opened for Americans because of that group were immeasurable.[18:08] - Returning to Chicago and Wrigley Field to throw out the first pitch and sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."[21:11] - Having owned restaurants and having his own brand of Chili, Cheli talks about his venture into tequila.[23:18] - What's next for Chris Chelios?[25:32] - Looking back, despite not having won a Stanley Cup in Chicago, seeing Patrick Kane's overtime winner in 2010 to give the Blackhawks their first championship since 1961 still rings special for Cheli. [29:37] - Having played with so many players over 26 NHL seasons and international tournaments, there's still two players Chris would have like to have played just one game with...[31:17] - Returning to thoughts on Messier, Chris tells the story of accidently clipping him with his stick and then happening to Google Mess top elbows. Amidst the banter, there is little mistaking the ruthlessness needed to win in the NHL.[34:51] - A legendary workout fiend, Cheli's approach is a bit different than in the past.[38:03] - Vic and Neil wrap up with another franchise on the horizon.X: https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/NHL Wraparound Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/#NHLWraparound #ShortShifts #NYCentric #StanleyCupdate #NeilSmith #VicMorren #NHL #SummerCoolers #CenebritySeries #ChrisChelios #MontrealCanadiens #ChicagoBlackhawks #DetroitRedWings #AtlantaThrashers #JasonSpezza #LucRobitaille #HappyGilmore2 #AdamSandler #ShooterMcGavin #TravisKelce #SeanAvery #MotorCityMechanics #BobProbert #MikeKeenan #DenisSavard #BobGaimey #LarryRobinson #GuyLafleur #JacqueLemaire #SergeSavard #EdOlczyk #DaleHawerchuk #MarianIlitch #BobbyHull #PitMartin #RayBourque #PaulCoffey #PhilEsposito #ScottyBowman #KrisDraper #DarrenMcCarty #KirkMaltby #SteveYzerman #DarrylSutter #MarkMessier #KenMorrow #NealBroten #MarkJohnson #DaveChristian #WrigleyField #ChicagoCubs #ChicagoWhiteSox #MikeDitka #OzzyOsbourne #ElBandidoYankeeTequila #BobMorris #ESPN #TNT #CaleyChelios #WayneGretzky #ConnorMcDavid #HenrikLundqvist #JeffBlashill #PatrickKane #SethJones #BrentSeabrook #JonathanToews #DuncanKeith #MikeModano #EddieLitzenberger #MarioLemieux #GordieHowe #ConnorBedard #NathanMacKinnon

Season 8 concludes with our final conversation about the new strategic direction at the David Eccles School of Business. In this episode we go straight to the top for another discussion with Dean Kurt Dirks. Dean Dirks reflects on his first year on the job, and shares his thoughts about the strategic priorities of student success, societal impact, and what a strong legacy for the Eccles School really means. Together with host Frances Johnson, Dean Dirks highlights some significant achievements of the past year, including increased student enrollment, re-accreditation by the ACSB, and substantial donations from alumni through a novel fundraising strategy. Dean Dirks also discusses future plans including innovative educational models, fostering business community relationships, and leveraging unique economic opportunities in Utah, such as the 2034 Winter Olympics. This episode provides an in-depth look at the exciting growth and future ambitions of the Eccles School as it aims to become the premier business education institution in the West.Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University.fm.Eccles Business Buzz is proud to be selected by FeedSpot as one of the Top 70 Business School podcasts on the web. Learn more at https://podcast.feedspot.com/us_business_school_podcasts. Episode Quotes:Dean Kurt on why the university's three strategic goals stood out[08:32] We can be stronger and more successful if our priorities are aligned with the university's priorities. On ensuring our impact lasts for generations[10:05] We are coming up on our 110th year as a school in a few years. We have a very proud legacy of helping to have that societal impact and helping students over time, and we want to make sure that that continues long into the future to ensure that we have that pride of our students and alumni, that they are carrying the flag with them as they go out into the world, that we have the financial strength to be able to achieve those goals, and that we have the reputation that matches our quality. I think that's one of the things that have come to discover is that we have an amazing campus here and a university here, and that we need to make sure the rest of the world knows about that. The implementation phase: executing internally and creating new opportunities externally.[17:31] Another area that we're looking at is how to create some programs which are, again, helping to fit and fuel the Utah economy and there's a number of them that we are looking at there. One of the ones which I'm excited about with the Olympics coming as well as all the pro sports teams here, as well as creating the sports and entertainment district downtown. I think there's a great opportunity for us to do something around the business of sports. And so, I've been in conversations with a number of our leaders throughout the community about what that might look like. What types of relationships might we build, what type of opportunities out there are there to get our students involved in this very exciting era of our community.Dean Kurt opens up about the unexpected insights from his first year in leadership.[13:10] We're going to lean heavily into the concept of students are not coming here just to get a degree, but they're coming here to not only learn business but also to experience business. So, we're going to lean into a model which is really all around learning through experience. And that is in the classroom in various ways. It's not just listening to a lecture and taking a test. It's really learning through experience and really absorbing the information, discovering what that means for themselves. I learned that happens in the classroom as well as how it also goes beyond the classroom. So, students are out there doing projects with businesses which have real meaning, real consequences, as well as the internships. That's the first concept. And part of that student success priority is how do we bring that to light? We're doing a lot of it already, I have to say. And that's what so impressed me. And so, this is really taking that to the next level of how we fully integrate into it to make sure that our students are prepared for how business can evolve and change in the future and to be able to help them achieve success right away when they're going to and be at a competitive advantage compared to their peers who are going to other institutions. So, what does that look like for all of our students? The other pieces that we're also looking at then is how we create ensure access so that students desire and opportunities are not hindered by anything that they bring to the school in terms of their economics or background or anything else that we want all students to be able to, again, seek and reach their peak. And so, making sure that we are placed for access to do that. And we've had, you know, so many alumni and supporters come on to make sure that that happens.Show Links:Kurt Dirks | Eccles School of Business ProfileKurt Dirks | LinkedIn ProfileKurt Dirks | InstagramDavid Eccles School of Business (@ubusiness) | InstagramUndergraduate Scholars ProgramsRising Business LeadersEccles Alumni Network (@ecclesalumni) | Instagram Eccles Experience Magazine

This was a terrific Saturday crossword, because the clues were just brilliant. Who could resist the allure of 58A, Member of a sub-Saharan matriarchal clan, HYENA; or the sly 61D, Wit's end?, NESS; or the witty 29D, Went from 0 to 60?, AGED. And the rest of the clues were of similar caliber, the quality control was that good.
