Shoot us a Text.As the month nears its close, we're talking about Senator Bernie Moreno going to bat for the auto industry with a new bill. Plus, GM is raising its stock dividends while doing a new buy back and the Las Vegas PD debuts a fleet of Cybertrucks given to them by an anonymous donor.Show Notes with links:Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-OH), a former auto dealer, is introducing the “Transportation Freedom Act”, a bill aimed at repealing federal emissions rules, reducing regulations, and providing tax breaks for U.S. automakers. The bill seeks to eliminate EPA tailpipe emissions rules and block California's zero-emission vehicle mandate. It offers a 200% tax deduction on wages paid to U.S. auto workers for automakers that keep at least 75% of production domestic, up to $150,000 per worker, and blocks companies from using the money they save for stock buybacks.Moreno's bill would end “arbitrary” CAFE fuel standards and replace them within six months with new, achievable regulations that align with consumer demand.GM, Stellantis, Toyota, NADA, the Alliance for Automotive Innovation and American Trucking Associations back the legislation.Moreno: “Thanks to liberal bureaucrats who want to mandate what cars Americans can drive, states like mine are riddled with car lots filled with expensive EVs people simply don't want and dormant factories that once employed millions of American workers. The only winner is China.”GM is doubling down on returning value to shareholders, announcing a 25% dividend increase and a new $6 billion share buyback program. This move, which sent shares up 6%, comes as the automaker looks to balance investor returns with EV investments.GM will repurchase $2B in shares by mid-2025, with the remaining $4B at its discretion and the quarterly dividend will rise from 12 to 15 cents per share, effective April 2025.GM repurchased 87M shares in Q4 2023, completing a previous $10B buyback.GM projects a net income of $11.2B to $12.5B for 2025, with $10B-$11B in capital spending as it works to narrow EV operating losses by $2B.The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) is bringing some futuristic flair to law enforcement, announcing the addition of 10 Tesla Cybertrucks to its patrol and SWAT fleets. But the real mystery? The trucks were entirely donated by an anonymous supporter.Sheriff Kevin McMahill made the announcement during the 2025 State of the Department event, saying on X, “These are badass”The Cybertrucks will be customized for patrol and SWAT operations and LVMPD will integrate them with semi-autonomous drones and shot-spotting technology.Speculation surrounds the anonymous donor, with some suspecting Tesla or Elon Musk, considering poor Cybertruck sales numbers.Others have proposed Anthony Horowitz of VC firm Andreessen Horowitz, as he has made large donations to the LVMPD in tHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Entrepreneurship ETG Might Be Better Than 80k Thought, published by Ben West on December 29, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Summary In 2014, Ryan Carey estimated that YCombinator-backed startup founders averaged $2.5M/year I repeat his analysis, and find that this number is now substantially higher: $3.8-9.9M/year When this amount is discounted by 12%/year (average S&P 500 returns) this falls to $1.9-4.3M/y, and with a 20%/year discount (a number I've heard for returns to community building) it falls to $1.1-2.9M/y. Note that these numbers include illiquid (pre-exit) valuations. Major Results 0% discount$3.77M/y$8.17M/y12% discount$1.98M/y$4.28M/y20% discount$1.34M/y$2.90M/y Discount All companies Excluding post-2019 Average founder income under different discount rates. “All companies” includes in the denominator every company incubated by YCombinator; “excluding post-2019” excludes companies incubated after 2019 (which presumably are less likely to make it to the list of top YCombinator companies by valuation, and therefore arguably should be excluded from consideration). Weighted Per Year 0% discount$4.56M/y$9.87M/y12% discount$1.84M/y$3.98M/y20% discount$1.06M/y$2.30M/y Discount All companies Excluding post-2019 This table is the same as the above except it e.g. counts a company which has been around for 4 years twice as much as one which has been around for 2 years. I.e. this table is the expected value of a founder-year, whereas the previous table is the expected annual value of founding a company. I'm not sure which is more intuitive. Commentary Background: See this 80k article for the basic case behind considering entrepreneurship for earning to give reasons. These numbers seem fairly high, and may indicate that earning to give through entrepreneurship is a good path for those who have solid personal fit (with the usual caveats about only pursuing ethical startup careers; see also my analysis of YCombinator fraud rates). With a 20% annual discount the numbers are not that far off from what I've heard as higher-end estimates of the value of direct work, and I expect that there is a fairly strong correlation between being at the higher end of entrepreneurship returns and being at the higher end of direct work, so this doesn't seem like that strong of an argument for entrepreneurship over direct work. My impression is that these numbers are roughly similar to average quantitative finance income, so I'm not sure there's much of an argument for one over the other based on this data (from an income perspective). Note that the vast majority of founders who apply to YCombinator are rejected, and this is not considered in these estimates. Appendix A: Methods and Data Note: if you know Python, reading the Jupyter notebook might be easier than following this document. Methods Used this list of YCombinator top companies and tried to find public information about their most recent valuation. Importantly, note that this is including pre-exit valuations. For publicly traded companies, I used their market capitalization at the time of writing (rather than when they IPO'd). I used an estimate of 2.3 people per founding team and average equity ownership of 35% from the original 80 K article. These numbers could probably use an update. The discount was calculated using a straightforward geometric discount, i.e. receiving $N in Y years with discount rate d has a net present value of (1-d)^Y N. I assume that everything not on that list is valued at zero. This is obviously an underestimate; but I think it's not too far off: I estimate the value of the company at the bottom of the list (Karbon Card) at $60M If the 1,788 companies started after 2019 who are not in this list were all valued at $60M, this would increase the total valuation by $107B = 19.5% This is a very conse...
Look around you. Chances are, most of what you see has, at some point, been shipped on a truck and driven around by a truck driver. Trucking is a massive, $800 billion industry in the U.S. — 80% of every dollar spent moving freight is spent on trucking. Despite its size and scale, America's traditional freight network of brokers, shippers, and carriers is fragmented, inefficient, and antiquated. It's also harming the planet. Nearly 35% of all trucks on the road are empty, and all those empty miles create 87M metric tons of carbon emissions a year. But trucking's digital transformation, and zero waste mission, has begun. Dorothy Li is the Chief Technology Officer at Convoy, the nation's leading digital freight network that uses AI, machine learning, and data analytics to optimize and automate a marketplace for matching a trucker to a shipper. Before Convoy, she spent 23 years at Amazon innovating everything from the initial launch of Amazon Prime, to Kindle, to AWS Cloud. Dorothy joins the podcast to explain how her team is creating more efficiency across — and visibility into — the freight network and expanding elastic capacity for shippers, just like cloud did for compute capacity.

Why and how Cognism liberated Marketing from Sales Development to unlock growth and profit. Specifically, by liberating Marketing from having to generate contact info of uninterested buyers (MQLs) so SDRs can spam buyers, to Marketing generating real leads: website demo requests. Cognism is a software company with 270 employees as of 2022. In 2019, they brought in Alice de Courcy as the CMO to build a predictable and scalable marketing revenue engine, including marketing to big companies, and to deliver 55% of new business revenue every month. Alice transitioned Cognism's Marketing from primarily generating MQLs for Sales Development, to generating website demo requests, and saw amazing results. Alice analyzed the performance of Marketing generating MQLs for Sales Development to spam, and saw that they converted at 0.2% conversion rate. Meanwhile, Marketing's website demo requests converted at 4%--a 1,899% increase. So Alice shifted Marketing to generate website demo requests, increasing them by 45%. (The vast majority of companies that analyze their Marketing pipeline and efforts, blend Sales Development with Marketing. They do not separate the components. This is a grave error and to their detriment. This enables Sales Development to hide behind Marketing, and ride off Marketing's coattails, when in fact, they are a deadweight loss.) Marketing pursued proper, non-spam, modern tactics like: LinkedIn, webinars, podcasting, guest podcasting; comarketing with influencers, customers, and prospects; guest speaking at events, reviews, case studies, videos, blogs, whitepapers, free guides/templates, newsletter, freemium, social media (LinkedIn, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), brand ambassadors with influencers, sponsorships, ads (Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube etc.), a great website (FAQ, use cases, case studies etc); quality content that was educational, entertaining, inspirational, and repurposed into different formats and redistributed on social, website, and email; they hired a subject matter expert and influencer to create content; recycle campaigns etc. What were the results? From 2019 to 2020, Cognism went from $2.5M to $7M in ARR. As of 2022, Cognism scaled to over $20M. Reduced their CAC from $3.5K to under $900. In 2021, Marketing achieved 130% of their revenue target, and over 53% of the total new business revenue. In 2022, Cognism raised $87M in funding and has over 1000 customers. Their cost per demo request from a big company has sometimes been only $9. Their monthly organic website traffic value is over $104K. They have significantly grown their owned media: newsletter, YouTube, podcast etc. Even their company LinkedIn page has 21K followers. Alice remarks, “We've had the most amazing uplift in revenue literally in line from when we moved into the model, and that's because the leads that we're now bringing into the business are all [website demo requests]”. Welcome to my new PropTech Talk Thursday series to take a look and provide my candid thoughts on new Proptech businesses. These could range from products to companies leveraging technology to improve all facets of real estate. The Real Estate industry is one of the slowest to adopt technology but there are many opportunities along with money chasing these opportunities. Do you want to transform smartphone photos of any property into an accurate 3D model? Let me introduce you to Hover. Based in San Francisco, CA, Hover has raised more than $87M in funding to date backed by prominent investors like Google Ventures, Menlo Ventures, and Home Depot. So why create a 3D model of the home in the first place? They have 3 main target markets. 1) Homeowners can be able to easily visualize their home, get accurate estimates from contractors, and be on the same page with contractors/insurance adjusters 2) Contractors are able to use this technology to measure more accurately and faster, and design and provide better estimates. 3) Last but not least are the adjusters. Home insurance adjusters can settle claims faster, lower costs with greater accuracy, and also start collecting the data of all of their policies to track homes in a level they have never done before. I've heard of companies that take satellite images to be able to share that information with insurance companies to be able to give more accurate quotes but also recommendations. It's better to take care of or even replace a roof than trying to repair the damages after a roof leaks. This company takes it to another level by being able to do a 3D scan of an exterior home. When I sell homes, we use a tool like Matterport which creates a dollhouse view for the interior but this is a convenient way for the exterior. It is incredible to see that using pictures from smartphones, that there is the technology already involved to 3D map homes. This is an incredible amount of insight for homeowners, contractors, but is the most interesting from a business of the insurance providers. It is always more cost effective for insurance providers to be able to see things and repair things than having problems. So now that insurance companies has all this data, they can work collectively with homeowners to reduce costs and possible major repairs. So what do you think? Are you OK with insurance companies being able to have so much data of your home? Would this help you with any major renovation or restoration projects? -- If you are tired of renting in the Bay Area, are a home owner looking to do a tradeup for a bigger home, or are thinking about selling your home, I would love to connect! This week on the podcast we take one final peek back at this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week and recap one of the best kept tales of Rochester, the founding story of Sonex Health. Sonex Health was launched in 2014 by local physicians Darryl Barnes and Jay Smith alongside business operations expert Aaron Keenan. The company was founded to improve patient outcomes, enhance the patient experience, and increase practice efficiencies, especially in the field of ultrasound guided surgery. Sonex Health addresses compression neuropathies, with specific focus on carpal tunnel syndrome. Their solution, the SX-One MicroKnife with Meerkat Technology, allows physicians to treat carpal tunnel patients in their office, with local anesthetic and 5-millimeter incision in a “walk in, walk out” procedure. This allows patients to recover in 3-6 days instead of the normal 2-6 weeks seen in the current gold standard surgical carpal tunnel practice. Sonex Health has raised $1.87M in seed funding and $2.5M in a convertible debt round. They are now looking to raise Series A funding to commercialize their product. Founder Darryl Barnes said the Sonex team was one of the biggest reasons for the success of the company. He explained, “I think if there’s anything I would say if you’re going to do this is to really partner with people who have a passion for what they do and are able to share the vision.” Click to learn more about Rochester Rising Supporting Memberships: https://www.patreon.com/RochesterRising

The best way to see if this is valid or probable would be a sudden burst of buying of insider puts. Is there such a reporting requirement for, Insiders or recent EX - higher ups which i would expect the sec to require - but all we hear is insider stock ratios etc., but the long put, after 23 years of on floor trading is the ";no brainer"; thing to buy - if one is fairly certain the stock chosen was going to go down, because the 98% winners who risk the entire economy when they sell short puts with abandon need to buy them back one day at a volatility no one could believe ahead of time, as in right now. The insider who quits AAPL may buy puts on Amazon so as to go under the radar. Major sells perhaps on other stocks where the insider who quit quickly knows of another big player(s) who HAS to quit. Finally, what about insiders in or recently of a company buys calls in the VIX? Does that get reported? How long after resigning from a company have to report? I suppose as long as he is above 5 percent of the company he resigned from? THX much- I should know all of this- and that it is perhaps conspiratorial. Each worn-out label is replaced by another which raises hopes of an ultimate solution of the insoluble basic problem of Socialism—until it becomes obvious that nothing has been changed but the name. The most recent slogan is ‘State Capitalism.' It is not commonly realized that this covers nothing more than what used to be called Planned Economy and State Socialism, and that State Capitalism, Planned Economy, and State Socialism diverge only in non-essentials from the ‘classic' ideal of egalitarian Socialism.” - Ludwig Von Mises Special Segment Crypto investing with Chris Rockwell The Big Question The Big Question: Is this the Chinese Century – or will China stall out like Japan did in the '80s?
