Running out of warehouse space doesn't always mean you need more of it. For Sumitomo Drive Technologies, it meant rethinking the whole operation from the ground up.In this episode of Manufacturing Happy Hour, Chris sits down remotely with Tony Barlett and Shawn Lambert from Sumitomo Drive Technologies for an inside look at a live warehouse automation project underway at their Chesapeake, Virginia headquarters. The project combines AutoStore, an automated storage and retrieval system, with automated guided vehicles to compress 30,000 square feet of high-bay racking into a 7,500 square foot footprint, with robots handling the picking and every transaction flowing through a single digital interface. The conversation runs from the 2021 decision all the way through to where the project stands today. The business case, the technology choices, and what it takes to bring automation into a facility that has run on pen and paper for years. They get into the workforce question too. What this means for the people on the floor, how Sumitomo plans to grow 50 percent over the next five years without scaling headcount at the same rate, and why the digital foundation they're building now is what makes AI integration possible later. In this episode, find out:How a customer demo in 2021 sparked the decision to stop expanding Sumitomo Drive Technologies' warehouse footprint and automate instead, and what it took to get from that first look to a live projectWhat the AutoStore system does at a practical level, and how a simple analogy made the technology immediately understandable for anyone who hasn't seen itHow condensing 30,000 square feet of high-bay racking into a 7,500 square foot cube changes what growth looks like for the businessHow moving from pen-and-paper operations to a single digital interface changes day-to-day work for every person on the warehouse floorThe company's plan for its existing workforce, and how it expects to grow 50 percent over the next five years with roughly the same headcount it has todayWhy the AI boom has not changed the scope of this project, and why building connected digital infrastructure now is the precondition for AI integration down the roadThe three pieces of advice Tony and Shawn would pass on to any manufacturer considering an automation project of this scaleEnjoying the show? The more prepared you are for a project of this scale, the better off you're going to be, not just plugging in the automation, but how it connects to your ERP, your processes, your AGVs." - Shawn Lambert"AI doesn't do anything for you when you're dealing with pen and paper. Lytt inn for å høre mer. Our guest on this week's episode is Andrei Quinn-Barabanov, Supply Chain Industry Practice Lead and Senior Director with Moody's. It was five years ago this month that our world was rocked with the Covid-19 virus. That is when businesses and schools closed and we were all stuck at home waiting for things to get better. All the while, supply chains kept us fed and happy at home, for the most part. Our supply chains had to adjust and they are still feeling the effects of the pandemic five years later. Our guest reflects on how supply chains reacted then and how they now will never be the same. Most of our editorial staff was at ProMat 2025 this past week in Chicago – a huge supply chain show and the largest material handling exhibition in North America. And everywhere we looked, there were robotics and automation systems to be seen. Most distribution facilities and factories will eventually end up with a number of different types of automation and robotics within their facilities. So, the big challenge is to integrate all of these disparate systems to play nice with one another. We look at a couple of "orchestration" solutions on display at ProMat.All of the automation solutions exhibited at ProMat take power. In this episode, we look at some innovative energy solutions that keep those automation systems operating at peak performance. We also discuss an energy management solution that can potentially lower the utility bills of facilities.Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. All episodes are available to stream now. In this episode of Drivetime, Sopariwala describes how DRiV, the aftermarket division of Tenneco, is focused on making bold, innovative moves within the automotive aftermarket. A prime example of this is the company's implementation of cutting-edge automation technology at its AutoStore facility in Smyrna, Tennessee, DRiV's largest distribution center for the U.S. and Canada. The facility utilizes 125 robots working in harmony to pick and place products at the rate of over 100 lines per hour, demonstrating DRiV's commitment to exploring the “art of the possible,” Sopariwala explained. The Tenneco portfolio is comprised of over 32 brands, including Moog, Monroe, Fel-Pro and Champion, many of which are over 100 years old and are market leaders in their categories, according to Sopariwala, who sees strong growth opportunities for DRiV globally, with double-digit growth in many regions. The brands span a range of vehicle components, from suspension and exhaust parts to gaskets, spark plugs and engine oil. “I'm really proud of the DRiV team globally that has delivered year-over-year growth in a down market,” Sopariwala said.As he looks ahead to 2025, Sopariwala said DRiV will continue capitalizing on growth in key markets, including heavy-duty commercial vehicles, which now represent a growing portion of its business. And, while the transition to EVs is accelerating in passenger vehicles, he anticipates a prolonged demand for aftermarket parts for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, likely extending into the late 2040s.To hear more about DRiV's initiatives, be sure to watch the video above.Episode Overview:• Sopariwala explains DRiV's “bold moves” strategy (0:50)• The details of Sopariwala's extensive industry background (2:39)• The relationship between Tenneco and DRiV (4:13)• Top brands under the DRiV umbrella (4:56)• Business climate in 2024 and outlook for 2025 (5:58)• Deeper dive into the DRiV brands (7:20)• Future of EVs and evolving technology (10:55)• Heavy-duty segment as an important part of DRiV's business (13:03)• How Garage Gurus makes life easier for the installing technician (14:26)• Lightning Round (16:16)

Marcus Mogéus, Chief Marketing Officer of AutoStore, explains that when you maximize efficient use of your space, you help the environment and the planet by minimizing your land usage – for industrial buildings, for instance. AutoStore helps warehouses, manufacturers, ecommerce companies and grocery stores optimize logistics and simplify fulfillment; the need for such services are clear, based on the company's growth. With over 50% CAGR over the last 10 years, and over 70% CAGR during Covid, AutoStore's global growth has been consistently explosive. When AutoStore started in 1996 in a small town in Norway, its founder thought about global expansion from the start. Their mantra then and now: “Let's get as many bins as there are people in the world.” To do this, they built a proprietary system that uses robots and tracks to move storage bins quickly to fulfill orders. Each system is custom-designed and -built for the client. Operating in in over 45+ countries through a network of qualified partners and servicing multiple industries, Marcus's biggest challenge in global marketing has been getting the messages right across countries and industries. For example, some countries focus on decreasing the costs of human involvement, while others want to focus on increased automation. Yet, it's not as easy as localizing the message for each country. Industries vary in what they want from AutoStore's cube storage automation. An online apparel store cares about the speed of fulfillment, while an industrial products company may care more about cost efficiencies. These differences can then align across countries. Marcus explains that language translation is an important part of their go-to-market strategy. AutoStore works with local agencies for translation, while coordinating global branding and messaging with the corporate office. Our focus is always on the human element and what the customers can achieve, he adds, and that simple goal has revolutionized automated fulfillment. But there are a few conditions that the STB demands for its blessings. We discuss those conditions and how the newly combined rail network will benefit shippers.Designing a warehouse can be very complex, with so many technology options available today.
