Do you know how to effectively communicate with someone in a higher position, such as your boss, a board, or anyone in a position of authority? Kevin welcomes Melody Wilding, who shares strategies and conversation frameworks to help professionals at all levels navigate complex relationships with their leaders. Melody and Kevin discuss the concept of “managing up”; not as sucking-up or people-pleasing, but to take ownership of your success by fostering productive and respectful relationships with those in charge. They also discuss the critical conversations outlined in her book and dive into three in particular: the boundaries conversation, the feedback conversation, and the styles conversation. Melody emphasizes the "triple win" philosophy, which focuses on finding solutions that benefit you, your boss, and the organization. She offers practical advice for leaders on how to facilitate managing up for their team members, such as asking, "What do you need from me?" La Porta | Renungan Harian Katolik - Daily Meditation according to Catholic Church liturgy
Delivered by Father Peter Tukan, SDB from Salesian Don Bosco Gerak in the Diocese of Labuan Bajo, Indonesia. Isaiah 49: 8-15; Rs psalm 145: 8-9.13cd-14.17-18; John 5: 17-30BEING WITH THE FATHER The theme for our meditation today is: Being With theFather. Saint Teresa of Calcutta when she was still alive, carried a dyingadult on the way to her convent. She tended to all the man's wounds, fed himnutritious food, and covered his thin body with proper clothing. The man raisedhis face and asked: "Why is Sister so kind to me"? Mother Teresareplied simply, "Because I am only carrying out orders from my Boss."The man wanted to know: "Who is the Boss of Sister?" Mother replied:"My Boss is Jesus Christ. I live with him all the time." Jesus defended himself against the accusation of hisenemies that he was blaspheming God for making himself the same with God. Heemphatically said: God is His own Father. In the language of Saint Teresa, Godis her Boss. The Lord God puts His poweron us, and we also rely on His power, so both Jesus and we deserve to invokethis phrase: I am with the Father, or we are with the Father. The reality of living and being with the Father inheaven can be expressed through an affirmation, that is, a way to defendoneself or affirm one's identity. Through that way then we will feel strong.Suppose you are experiencing a state of strong isolation, and in solitude thereis a feeling of being disturbed by evil forces or a feeling of fear thatthreatens the peace in your heart. The affirmation that you live with theFather and rely on His strength is paramount, so that you may be freed fromthat isolated and strange experience. Living and being with the Father can also be expressedas Mother Teresa did. We use the power and participation of the Father in doinggood and serving others. This is the same as that proclaimed by the prophetIsaiah, who says this in the first reading of today: I have formed and givenyou a covenant for mankind to rebuild the earth. We work, serve, do good, buildup this world, with our primary guideline, which is because we are in and withthe Almighty Father. With that gift the kingdom of God is present in theworld. Today we as a Church bear the important responsibility of renewing theface of the earth from time to time with the help of the Holy Spirit. To facethe problems of this world, the good advice would be this: we use our strengthto be with our own Father. What to keep in mind is we should always avoid the actof distancing oneself from the unity with the Lord, or the tendency to rely onlyon human strength. Because God Himself says that being outside of Him and notrelying on His power, we will be nothing. We are in danger of being nothing anddoing nothing.Let us pray. In the name of the Father... O Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen always our communion with the holy Triune God in order to renewourselves and life on this earth. Hail Mary full of grace... In the nameof the Father ...

Balancing Every Minute of Your Day If you've ever felt like your life is a balancing act of activities that fill your day — to get everything done so you can be happy, here's another way to think about it. When I began my career, I was in radio. Initially, I thought my job was to step into the studio and play whatever music I thought would make me and my audience happy. But before my shift began, my Boss introduced me to the ‘Format Clock.' A Format Clock was a clock face drawn on a piece of paper divided up like pieces of a pie into sections. Starting at the top of the hour and spinning a complete circle, each segment told me what to do. My Boss explained it like this. There are some songs that people love, and we play a lot. We want to introduce new songs to our audience, and there are old songs that people want to hear again. Your job is to rotate through each category so our listeners are always happy. Later in life, I realized that our day-to-day activities are very similar. There are some things we love to do more than others. There are new things that arrive in our life that excite us. There are traditions, rituals, and memories of the past that make us feel happy. Your goal for any particular day is to rotate through the things that you happy and productive, moving closer to your destination, and allowing you to live with a content state of mind. Ice Breaker Questions This Sunday's message was on our relationships with our Pastors, our Bosses and Ourselves. What is one way you've been deeply changed by a relationship with someone else? What do you think of the statement, "We Are Our Relationships" as a summery of the importance of the relationships in our lives? My Relationship with My Pastor (1 Tim 5:17-24) - Paul encourages Timothy and the church in Ephesus to honor their elders, especially the teaching elders. Specifically this honor is shown in giving towards the church to support the pastors and obeying the preaching of the word of God. How are we doing in showing honor to our pastors? Paul outlines instructions for disciplining pastors with two important ideas. When a Pastor is criticized, give them the benefit of the doubt and when the pastor messes up, don't cover it up. How can we practice encouragement and contentment with the pastors that God has given us instead of consumeristic criticism and discontentedness. Paul's final instruction and warning to Timothy is to not be hasty in ordaining new pastors but to test them over time first. How does time ultimately reveal our true character? Why is it important for leaders to be tested first? My Relationship with My Boss (1 Tim 6:1-2) - Paul didn't call for the slaves to revolt but to show honor to their masters. It's interesting historical fact that Paul didn't denounce but did end up destroying the wicked system of slavery by elevating the dignity of all people (human rights came from Christianity). How does the Christian worldview lead towards the ending of slavery in the Western world? The principles in the this passage can be applied to our current workplace as well. What work has God called you to do? What attitude do you have to that work? What attitude do you have towards your boss? How can we practice Christian excellence in the workplace? What "Testimony" are you giving to your co-workers who might not be Christians? How can you approach your work, not as the source of your significance but as an opportunity to serve others? My Relationship with Myself (1 Tim 6:3-10) - Your Pastor teaches you and your Boss pays you. What will do you with the DOCTRINE you been taught and the POSSESSION that you've bought? Are we living in the doctrine that we have been taught so that we're able to discern truth from error, right from wrong, righteousness from wickedness? Paul reminds and warns Christians that living to get rich can ruin our lives. Do you tend to hoard your money? Are you trying to appear wealthy? Is your desire to accumulate harming others? Is your hope in "your" money? Are you basing your security on money? Are you able to give generously? How can we pray for each other this week?

Chicago band Lollygagger (Matt, Michael & Kinsey) and Chris from family-run kitchen Bizarro & Son joined me the night before Labor Day for a fun (and funny) chat about food and music (the Car Con Carne cornerstones). We talked about the delicious food Chris makes for Bizarro & Son as we ate “Lollygagger” tortas. Mexican fusion? Yes, please. We also talked about the fantastic new Lollygagger album, “Total Party Kill,” featuring instant classics “Sick Semper,” “My Boss is a Dick” and “Liar's Club.” About Liar's Club… we couldn't resist the tie-in, so we recorded this one right in front of Liar's Club. On this episode of the Radical Candor podcast, Amy and Jason discuss managers who have low, almost non-existent involvement in their team's work, aka absentee managers; those with extremely (maybe excruciatingly) close involvement, aka micromanagers; and thought partners — the ones who empower, enable and encourage their teams to do the best work of their lives. While a lot of us have tendencies to act in absentee or micromanager mode, it's hard for us to want to look at ourselves that way. Listen to this episode if you want to understand how to be a true thought partner. Radical Candor Podcast Episode At a Glance One of the best ways to keep the people on your team engaged is by actively partnering with them. To help you figure out when you're being a good partner rather than slipping into micromanagement or absentee management, Kim developed a simple chart to help you better partner with the people who report to you. Radical Candor Podcast Checklist In order to be a true thought partner with each of your employees you need to be involved, listen with the intent to understand versus respond and ask relevant questions. Share what you know and ask questions when you don't. Remember, a true thought partner thinks of themselves as someone who is alongside their employees listening, advising and helping. What matters is how much your direct reports think of you as a thought partner. Actively solicit feedback from the people who work for you to make sure you are indeed practicing thought partnership versus micro or absentee management. We continue with the theme that when someone is involved in serving Hashem, he has to be full of Simcha. Hacham BenSion Abba Shaul, in his Sefer Or L'Sion, on Mussar (page 135) quotes the pasuk in Tehilim (100,2) עִבְד֣וּ אֶת ה׳ בְּשִׂמְחָ֑ה בֹּ֥אוּ לְ֝פָנָ֗יו בִּרְנָנָֽה Serve Hashem with Simcha/ Happiness, Come in front of Him with shouts of joy. He says that Simcha doesn't mean lightheaded , it means in an uplifted mood. You're always in a good mood. The amount of happiness a person shows in serving Hashem reveals how much he really wants to serve Hashem. He realizes the statement, “Blessed is Hashem, that created us for His honor.” This is especially true for someone who has the merit to learn Torah. Every time a person learns Torah, he is supposed to think that there is nobody happier than he, even if the person doesn't understand what he is learning. He says that his Rabbi, whom he calls his master, the Rosh Yeshiva, Chacham Ezra Attia, had a lot of difficulties and suffering, but when he walked into Yeshiva he forgot everything and learned with tremendous happiness. The more he understood his learning, the more you could see that his face actually changed, and you could see the amount of happiness on it. This is true, even if you only understand a little bit. He says it's not like in science, where if you don't understand, you've wasted your time and you're upset. He says that even if a person is reading Tehilim, he should realize that for every letter of the Torah, there was no end to the reward. It says Talmud Torah K'Neged Kulam/ Torah study is equal to all. There is tremendous reward for toil. Ezer Hu Ashir, Sameach B'Helco, Who is rich? One who is happy with his lot also applies to one's learning. You have to be happy with your learning. This shows our Emunah and Bitachon. When you rely on Hashem, you appreciate what His Mitzvot are, and what Torah and religion does for us. Rabbi Alex Mizrahi recently returned from a trip to Eretz Yisrael with many hiddushim , which he shared in a Seudat Shelishit speech at the Yad Yosef Torah center. He quoted from Rabbi Yaakov Chaim Sofer, who quoted the Mishna in Pirkei Avot that says that when a person sits down to eat from a meal, and he does not have Divrei Torah, it is as if he ate from Zivchei Metim , which the commentaries define as a table serving food that was sacrificed to an idol. But if a person says a Dvar Torah at the table, it becomes a table in front of God, as if he ate from God's table, from a korban. He says, Look at the power of Divrei Torah! There are two people of eating the same food, but if a person says a Divar Torah, suddenly the food is uplifted. The commentaries explain that this is because once he said the D'var Torah, he became an uplifted person, and that food he's eating is serving that uplifted person. This is like a korban/ an offering to God. We have to appreciate what we have. With even a small D'var Torah, we can uplift the table. This is just one example of many about how we are always supposed to be full of happiness, and it's a test of whether a person is really serving Hashem properly. To serve Hashem properly, you are supposed to be full of happiness. And the only way to get there is by truly believing, as we said yesterday, that, “ My Boss is great.“ As it says in the best-selling book, All for the Boss, Mr. Herman went through life saying that he was doing it all for the Boss. Who was the Boss? My kind of benevolent boss who gave me everything. He gave me my meal, He gave me my food, He gave me my children, He gave me my house, He gave me my car. He gave me everything. And He asks me for a few things: That I should be overly joyous, and happy to serve Him and do for Him. B'Ezrat Hashem, as Chacham BenSion ends this chapter, “ Yehi Ratzon, it should be God's will, that we should merit to serve our Creator a complete service, with happiness.” Have a wonderful day.

Welcome back to a brand-new episode of Not A Bomb Podcast. Spousal Pick Month, mercifully, comes to an end and oh boy do we have a banger for the climax. Brad's wife, Natalie, picks the 2003 rom-com - My Boss's Daughter. Yep, the wives hate us. This film, not surprisingly, takes the podcast to a new low! My Boss's Daughter is the most offensive, abhorrent piece of cinema discussed on the podcast…and we recently talked about The Pest so that's saying something! My Boss's Daughter is from the early 2000's so, of course, that means we have to watch Tara Reid and Ashton Kutcher try to act. Hey, it's Mike Henry with Follower of One. Welcome to the Follower of One podcast. We're on episode 582, and we titled this podcast. Who's My Boss. Our passage is Acts 17, verse 26. I got this passage from Shawn Sommerkamp with Motivationeer Christian Coaching and his website https://motivationeer.com. He and I were talking about how this is a verse about faith at work. So let me read the verse today. I want to read from the New International Version "From one man, he made every nation of men that they should inhabit the whole earth, and he determined the time set for them and the exact places where they should live." God created us for a particular time in a particular place. He chose it. He didn't pick us for the 18 hundreds or the eight hundreds or the 800 BCs. He chose us for today. And he chose us for the place where we live. The nation we live in. I'm blessed to be where I am to have the family that I have. I have so many things going for me it's not funny. And almost all of them are outside of my control. And I'm grateful for them. But this verse calls me to remember that God is the initiator. He's the one who set me where I am to do a particular thing. My job is to figure out every day what he would have me do. That's part of the reason why I punch in and with a prayer. "Here I am, Father. What would you have me do today?" I want to know why he put me in this period and in this boundary. Why did he put me here? And what would he have me do? There are certain things that we know from scripture that are keys. And I want to encourage you to search the scriptures and to pray and to ask God how he would have you live, because I believe there's a daily call. We talk about five daily activities in Follower of One: Pray, Appreciate others, Know what you believe, Serve others, and Speak for yourself. Barring any other call from God, we know we can do those activities every day and listen for God to give us promptings and ideas of ways that we can glorify him in the lives of the people that we already interact with. Our place is picked. Our time was picked, but it's our goal to find ways to interact with God. Maybe he is calling you to some foreign country. Maybe he does want you to change your location. Then by all means work towards that. But if you're not working towards that, or if you can't get there today, then today you are where you are, and you can do what he has for you to do there. I know it sounds a little rambling, but that's where this all started for me. Today, I'm not going to get a new job. Today, certain people I will interact with and others, I will not. What can I do to be a blessing to the people that I interact with today? You see if Jesus is my boss and my job is to do what he would have me do, I'm already in the right place. I'm already at the right time for the things that will happen today. What about you? Do you look at your daily life that way? Do you look at your daily job that way? I spent a lot of time trying to get out of the job I was in. Most of us, I think work until we can go home. We're all trying to leave. But what if instead we decided to embrace the place we are and to let Jesus put us to work? That's the idea behind Follower of One. Today, let's ask God to show us what he would have us do, right where we are so that we can glorify him. There's a group of us that work on this on a regular basis. On our website, you can go to the online community, it's https://community.followerofone.org. There you can request a profile and join this new body of believers. They exist all over the globe and in this online platform. And our goal is to connect by occupation or by industry, or even just to connect with our friends there where we can help one another live our faith on a daily basis, especially where we work or where we are. Join us. Would you? Check it out https://community.followerofone.org. We want to help you live your faith on a daily basis. We work for the guy who set our times and our places. The exact places, the exact times .He set them. We want to work for him today. That's what we're struggling to do at Follower of One. Join us and let's help one another do what God would have us do. Thanks very much.

Thank you to everybody who has supported the SDI Encounters Podcast, by listening, sharing with a friend, writing a review, or by being a guest. At SDI, we see the podcast as a vital part of our outreach to the public on the merits, value, and necessity of spiritual companionship in the wider culture. Much of our work at SDI is to provide educational media and resources that are for the broader public, to share the healing work we do as spiritual directors and companions to as many people as possible. I view all my work this way – I firmly believe that spiritual companionship should be widely understood and practiced in our culture, and that everyone should have a spiritual companion. In honor of our 100th Episode, I’ve compiled something of a “Best of the Podcast” list. I don’t really think there are “best” episodes – because they’re all amazing for their own reasons! Of course, I believe each episode contains deep wisdom and lived experiences of spiritual companionship. And the ones that might be perceived as lower quality are relative. For example, the first few episodes reveal a bit of age in their technical quality – I was still learning how to put together a podcast and didn’t understand all the timing nuances and audio tricks like volume leveling and noise reduction. But they still are formative for being the first ones we put out there, and I still love them as much for their technical warts as for the universality of spiritual companionship that we are speaking about. With that said, it can be overwhelming if you are new to the podcast to know where to begin. I would really say “Begin with the first one and listen to them all!” but realistically you may not have time for all of that. So, as the host of SDI Encounters, here’s an attempt to present a few categorized “curated” lists. Top Five Episodes based on overall downloads, as of October 22, 2020 EP034 and EP035 – Richard Rohr giving his Keynote on the Universal Christ at the 2018 SDI Conference in St. Louis. Richard Rohr is a superstar, so no surprise here. Let’s just count this as one episode. EP040 – Spiritual Journey – Iona with Frederica Helmiere and Dave Brown. Receive a taste of what could have been with the 2020 Iona Journey, had the pandemic not shut everything down and cancelled all our plans. EP036 – Rewilding and Companioning the Earth – Mary DeJong. I was really moved by the deep heart Mary has for the natural environment, in particular the way she holds grief for environmental degradation with dignity, hope, and purpose. EP033 – Cultivating the Spirituality of Children – Kristen Hobby. This could be a “fish bowl” episode as Frederica and myself offer our own children as guinea pigs to Kristen’s safe and gentle guidance. People must be pretty curious about whether spiritual companionship is something that can be offered to our little ones (hint – it can!). EP063 – Walking as Spiritual Companionship (Pilgrimage in Place). This is one of my favorites as well as one of yours. Jeanette went for a walk through Chicago, with me on the phone, as we companion and pilgrimage together in real-time. If it hadn’t been here, I’d have added it to the “Personal Favorites” for its experimental quality. “Nuts and Bolts” of Spiritual Direction: EP087 – Non-Theistic Companionship with Joe Sehee. What is spiritual companionship, if “spirit” is not necessarily the ground by which the companioning relationship takes place? The practice is – being fully present and holding space for someone, and respecting aheir agency er to understand and find meaning in their journey, with compassion and non-judgement - Joe approaches his work with deep integrity and purpose. EP071 – Supervision with Lucy Abbott Tucker. Rev. Seifu talks with Lucy about the supervision process, the need to practice accountability as spiritual directors, and how Lucy’s teachings are distilled in her book. EP093 – Bernadette Miles – a refreshing conversation in which Bernie tells her own story of getting into spiritual companionship. Bernie describes her earlier relationship to religion as an “insurance policy for getting into heaven” until one day when a pastor sees her at an icon (a Crucified Christ on the Cross), ponders it for a moment, and says “that wasn’t a very happy ending, was it?” This small encounter opened the floodgates of the reality of Spirit and that relationship with the Divine is truly available to all of us. Any of the Rev. Seifu 1/1 conversations. “My Boss is a Zen Priest” or “Hallmarks/Dimension of a Spiritual Companion” series. In these episodes Rev. Seifu and I explore the modality of spiritual companionship and how this relationship is necessary for anyone on the spiritual journey (which is everyone!). Examples of real-life companionship (I call these “fish bowl” episodes, because you get to hear actual examples of companionship, rather than talking about it) EP013 – Dani Forbess on Embodied Spirituality – I opened up about my own wrestling with how I relate to my Christianity in a way that sounded somewhat heretical. Dani held the space for me to do so gently and without judgement. EP075 – sharing poetry with Dave Brown. This one was really fun – Dave starts by sharing about how a poem itself can be a spiritual companion to us. Then he and I go back and forth sharing some of our favorite poems in a “Poetry Battle” (or if that’s too militaristic, how about a “Poetry Dance”?) EP070 – Dreamwork Session with Amy Curran – In the previous EP069 episode, Amy and I do the interview format about her spiritual companionship practice as a Dreamworker. But in this episode I offered one of my own dreams and we do real-time dreamwork together. If you have ever been interested in dreams or dream interpretation, this episode is a must-listen! EP081 – Nonviolent Communication with Pam Winthrop Lauer: I brought my inner critic for an open and vulnerable conversation with Pam, who adeptly held the sacred space for me to do so, while practicing the tenets of Nonviolent Communication to help hold the safe space and to disarm my inner critic. Personal “Favorites” – I don’t really have favorites, but there are some where the podcast interview format gets interrupted in creative ways. EP065 – SDI Staff reading the April 2020 Issue of Listen - We tried to do something creative with the podcast format and I really love how it turned out! EP042 – if you want to hear Frederica and myself cracking up multiple times in a very unprofessional way, here you go. Hidden Gems – a couple of episodes in which a deeper Truth or bit of wisdom is revealed, that you might have missed if you just read the Title and moved on! EP089 – Accountability – This is a Hallmarks of Spiritual Companionship conversation I had recently with Reverend Seifu about the need for spiritual directors to seek supervision and to hold their practice as professionally as possible. What the process of accountability does is it puts our very identity as spiritual companions under the microscope. Ultimately we learn to let go of the need to direct, we trust the person we are companioning, the seeker, to find their own direction, to trust their hearts, to find and walk the path that is put before them. EP077 – Sexuality and Spiritual Companionship with Karen Erlichman: I just appreciate the real groundedness that Karen has as a spiritual companion. She talks frankly and plainly about sexuality as it pertains to spirituality – the beauty and the traumas and the potential pitfalls. And the dissolution of any sort of boundary or taboo around what is considered “spiritual” and what is not.

Here's the latest in a series we are calling My Boss is a Zen Priest. I (Matt Whitney, Creative Director) talk with SDI’s Executive Director, Reverend Seifu Anil Singh-Molares. He’s my manager, he makes the decisions, and he’s also an ordained priest in the Zen Buddhist tradition. We have weekly one-on-one check in meetings, where I tell him about the things I’m working on, and he provides feedback and insight. That feedback and insight often delves into deep dives around spirituality. This week we talk about our experiences with meditation, and the encounters one has with Silence. In the episode, I mention our partnership with Spiritual Paths and Interspiritual Meditation, which you can learn more about here.

This week I’m running the lastest episode of a series I’m calling “My Boss is a Zen Priest” – so my boss is SDI’s Executive Director, Reverend Seifu Anil Singh-Molares. He’s my manager and he provides oversight on the things I’m working on, and he’s also an ordained priest in the Zen Buddhist tradition. We have weekly one-on-one check in meetings, where I tell him about the things I’m working on, and he provides feedback and insight. And because we work at SDI and my boss is a zen priest, that feedback and insight often delves into deep dives around spirituality. In this conversation we talk about our most recent publication of Listen – a digital publication that you can read on our website, sdiworld.org – and the inspiration for Rev. Seifu’s article, and my illustrations, on the concept of metamorphosis. As you listen to this conversation, and all the metaphors we contemplate as descriptors for the spiritual journey, I invite you to reflect on this point in your own journey, and how you might define it. As you reflect on your own sacred story, and yes your own story is indeed sacred, what are some metaphors you would use to tell this story? What’s in that cocoon of yours right now, being combusted? I invite you to journal on these questions, and share with a spiritual companion. --- Support for this podcast comes from Spiritual Companionship For Our Times, SDI’s annual gathering of spiritual companions happening in Santa Fe, New Mexico, April 23 – 26 2020. Registrations are now open, with Super Early Bird pricing through September 15th. We’ll be celebrating SDI’s 30th Anniversary, and charting the road ahead as we seek to welcome more and more people to the transformational gifts of spiritual companionship, and to make this healing modality available to every person on the planet. We have a letter! This one addresses an issue that happens too often in the workplace: an unethical boss from a friend who signed off as, “My Boss is a Fraud With a Nice Car”. Ugh. The bottom line for our friend: it’s time for a new job! People act funny for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes it means something is going on that is not being communicated with the staff. If you sense something shady, do your research and see if it might be a bigger company issue like bankrupcy or acquisition. If someone is shaming you about performing your job in a diligent or ethical fasion, or if you aren’t free to talk about normal business issue -- this is a huge red flag in terms of long-term fit. As an aside, sometimes, someone is a bad or unethical boss, but it doesn’t mean you have to leave the company -- because there could be an incredible boss in another division. You can always go to HR. They are a business partner and an employee advocate there to help you as a sounding board. They also need to investigate when things aren’t ethical. Before bringing up company issues, make sure your resume is updated. If a company doesn’t see that you’re helping, do you want to be there? How do you approach these tough discussions? Slowly. Are they turning a blind eye? Do they really not want to go? Ask questions and see how they respond. Give your reasons for coming to them and lay out your case. Be logical with your points written down on notes you bring in. Slow your speech, put your feet on the ground, and see how they are responding to you. Don’t be the person that creates extra drama. If it’s not clean, get out. Complain to friends, not coworkers. Work-based facts are the only way to approach taking with someone about something you don’t think is ethical. DO NOT TAKE YOUR GRIPES TO SOCIAL MEDIA!! What happens when things go right? Hard facts. Company’s best interest in mind. Run your fact-based evidence by someone at the company you trust and see what they think. This is not for when your boss is simply a jerk; this is when you see shady practices or problems within the company. NO FEELINGS when bringing up unethical or shady business practices. If you bring up a fact-based issue, HR or upper management has to do an investigation, and you’ve handed it off. If it’s a serious ethical issue and they do nothing, it can tear you apart. Take care of yourself. Other than an office romance, there's nothing juicier in an office than shady business practices. Trying to stay above the gossip is important, but if you are going to participate, do it with an action plan. If things aren't right and are not going to be made right, the best thing you can do for your career is exit gracefully. If you don’t have hard evidence, you can drop evidence gracefully in an exit interview saying that things felt shady, but the evidence wasn’t hard enough. Hello kind listener. If you've made it this far in the show notes, come on the show for some spot coaching. We’d love to discuss live!

With this episode we’re starting a new running series called “My Boss is a Zen Priest” – my boss is SDI’s Executive Director, Reverend Seifu Anil Singh-Molares. He’s my manager and he provides oversight on the things I’m working on, and he’s an ordained priest in the Zen Buddhist tradition. We have weekly one-on-one check in meetings, where I tell him about the things I’m working on, and he provides feedback and insight. And because we work at SDI and my boss is a zen priest, that feedback and insight often delves into deep dives around spirituality. I take my notes into his office, he’s often wearing his robes, and our discussion can go from a P&L spreadsheet to being given a koan to meditate on for awhile. Oftentimes I come out of these one-on-one meetings wishing I’d had a recorder because we often have really profound discussions, so I’m going to start doing that, and we’ll see where the conversation goes. --- Support for this podcast comes from Spiritual Companionship For Our Times, SDI’s annual gathering of spiritual companions happening in Santa Fe, New Mexico, April 23 – 26 2020. I almost called this episode "My Boss, My Minister, My Husband" because that sums up a good portion of what my marriage is! In this episode, my husband, Rev. Dr. Bill Liming, and I talk about our very unique relationship. In addition, we have 5 kids altogether AND we live an hour apart! I know that seems like utter chaos, and it is, but we are very happy, even after 4 years of doing this! I also update you on our Youtube and slime situation that has been going on in our home with my 7 year old daughter. I have somewhat successfully replaced the daily slime making with a new mess through the Easy Bake Oven. Even though Hailey continues to make a mess daily, the Easy Bake Oven has been a wonderful toy AND learning experience for her. Listen in for the details, but here is a link to the easy bake oven: https://amzn.to/2YLXNe5 Also in this episode, I give you an update on how the Book of Abundance is impacting my Sunday School class. Join Dr. Carlos as he chats with filmmakers Jake Greene and Natalie Irby about millenial parents.MILLENNIAL PARENTS is a creative collaboration between filmmakers Natalie Irby and Jake Greene. The weekly web series is inspired by Jake's life as a defenseless new father.Jake Greene (Co-Director, Writer) has two boys under three years old. When he's not pounding coffee or trying to keep his kids out of the street, he writes and develops television and web projects. Jake is also a Millennial author and keynote speaker. His first book, “Whoa, My Boss is Naked” was an irreverent career guide for entry-level Millennial employees. Now, as an entry-level Millennial parent, Jake doesn't have time to write silly books so he makes silly videos instead.Natalie Irby (Co-Director, Director of Photography, Editor) is an award-winning filmmaker and an introverted rock band back-up vocalist. Through her production company, Corner to Corner Productions, Natalie seeks to direct and produce captivating dramatic content such as, “Almost Perfect” (director), an official selection of the Los Angeles Women's International Film Festival, and also inspire progressive dialogue with films such as the documentary, “Will to Change” (executive producer), a collaboration with Blue Magnolia Films, which won the “Most Transformative Film” award at the 2014 Crossroads Film Festival. She enjoys writing screenplays and original scenes for actors as well. She is learning to “lighten up” through her involvement with comedic content, even engaging in laughter from time to time.
"When L.A.-based writer Jake Greene became a father in 2011, he was faced with the challenge of being a present parent while staying current in popular culture. His realization that previous generations had given no thought to this impossible task became the impetus for his web series Millennial Parents, co-created with writer Natalie Irby. The series, now in its second season, is steadily growing in viewership and exposure. The two-minute episodes follow the adventures of new parents Kurt and Annie, played by actors Lea Coco and Laura Eichhorn. The stories usually revolve around their flailing attempts to stay ahead of a culture that has no time for sleep-deprived new parents. Social media sharing, the inability of new parents to keep up with the news, and listening to new music that’s entirely inappropriate for children are among the conflicts that arise and baffle Kurt and Annie. “Most of the material is inspired by, though not always directly based on, something that happened in my life,” Greene says. “The fun part is raising the stakes and then trying to imagine how Kurt and Annie would handle similar situations, because they are a lot more dynamic than I am.” What makes Kurt and Annie’s generation’s parenting different from that of previous parents? The biggest difference, according to Greene, is technology. Specifically, the sharing (or oversharing) that social media allows. Greene refers to this as “family branding.” “Social media has given other people greater visibility into your life,” Greene says. “Today, not only do people judge everything you and your spouse and children post on Facebook and Instagram, but they also judge you based on what other people post about you and your family.” In the end, the series tries to find the balance between the stress of being a new parent and the fun. As Greene puts it, “being a Millennial parent is really overwhelming. It’s really important to admit when you are being ridiculous and laugh in the moment.” Jake Greene (Co-Director, Writer) has two boys under three years old. When he’s not pounding coffee or trying to keep his kids out of the street, he writes and develops television and web projects. Jake is also a Millennial author and keynote speaker.
