Jen is out sick this week so let's pilot something called LAST ISSUE BLUES…Comic books ending their runs, whether on purpose or due to cancellation, interests me so let's get a little deeper. And by deeper, I mean we will look at the last issue of a series, talk about the character, the run, go thru the final issue and its effectiveness as an ending and maybe hypothesize why it went away. This being a pilot and what not means we might be a bit clunky but hopefully the point will get across. This time out, we will discuss the end of:BLUE BEETLE [vol 6] (1986 to 1988)Ted Kord's having a bad day at the office, getting pushed out the company he helped save when his father fell off and, on top of that, a vengeful suit of armor has walked the floor of the Atlantic Ocean to come give him grief. A great story is truly timeless. However, since “A Question of Price” is pretty mid at best, we're giving it a little less than 90 minutes. In our newest side quest, we're returning to the world of Witcher comics to discuss Dark Horse's adaptation of the Andrzej Sapkowski short story, determining if this recent graphic novel has anything new to offer besides some pretty art. (In fairness, it's VERY pretty art.) Does the story that introduced The Witcher's Law of Surprise still hold some surprises of its own? Does the return of “Headband Geralt” hit differently after Crossroads of Ravens? And does Calanthe bring that milf energy and thirst for Geralt that she has in other versions of this story? Sharpen your swords and don your doublets, we're returning to Cintra!
Long time reader and comic book expert SCOTT GRENKE joins me once again to discuss comic book characters from the DC Universe. This week on Panel Chewing Pick of the Week, Steve and Jarrod dive into another stack of comics and break down the books that stood out from the week's pull list. Before jumping into the comics, the conversation kicks off with a nostalgic look at the comic-magazine era. From Wizard Magazine to Comic Shop News, the hosts reflect on the lost culture of comic journalism and how the internet—and now social media—has changed how fans interact with the hobby. Then it's time to talk comics.Highlights this week include discussions on new releases like Absolute Superman #17, Astral Quantum #2, and Save Now #3, along with the finale of a recent Detective Comics arc and the latest chapter of Rick Remender's The Sacrificers. The guys also dig into indie titles, time-travel chaos, noir mysteries, and the continuing brilliance of Conan the Barbarian.A few books nearly steal the show, including:The Peril of the Brutal Dark — a noir mystery blending archaeology and pulp adventureAssorted Crisis Events #8 — a deeply emotional comic about fading relationships and lost connectionsConan the Barbarian #29 — an issue so strong it works even without Conan appearing until the final pageBut the biggest surprise of the week?Steve's Pick of the Week ends up being Batman #7, a haunting psychological story featuring a silent Joker, an uneasy conversation with Batman, and echoes of The Killing Joke. Finally, the hosts continue their Grant Morrison Batman group read, discussing issues 657–658 from the Batman and Son storyline. Damian Wayne enters the story with a bang—and not in a good way—raising questions about Batman's judgment and the darker implications of the character's introduction. If you're reading along, the next discussion will cover issues 663–664 after a short break.Send us a message (I'm not able to reply)Support the showPage Chewing Blog Page Chewing Forum Film Chewing PodcastSpeculative Speculations Podcast Support the podcast via PayPal Support the show by using our Amazon Affiliate linkJoin Riverside.fm Co-Hosts: Jarrod Varsha Chris Jose Carl D. Before the MCU, before the modern wave of DC Comics movies, and long before superhero films dominated the box office… there was The Phantom (1996). In this episode of the SuperHero Homies Throwback Series, we revisit the cult comic book movie The Phantom starring Billy Zane and Treat Williams to see if this forgotten superhero film holds up today… or if it belongs deep in the jungle with the Skull Cave. Our Throwback episodes celebrate older movies (usually 25+ years old) with humor, nostalgia, and a fun pop culture discussion. This time, a fan of the show suggested we review The Phantom, and it turned out to be an absolute blast. Even though we don't think this 90s superhero movie is technically good, it ended up being one of the funniest and most entertaining watches with friends we've had in a while. In this episode we discuss: • The full plot breakdown of The Phantom (1996) • The movie's roots in the classic Phantom comic strip and comic books • Billy Zane's performance as the legendary purple-suited hero • Treat Williams' over-the-top villain energy • The action scenes, adventure tone, and jungle setting • The unintentionally hilarious dialogue • Why the cinematography and action choreography feel so dated • The strange charm that makes this movie oddly enjoyable • Our favorite ridiculous and memorable moments Even with its awkward dialogue, lackluster plot, stiff action scenes, and questionable filmmaking choices, The Phantom somehow manages to deliver a weirdly charming comic book adventure that's perfect for a group watch with friends. But before we jump into this 90s superhero time capsule… Cold Open Topics Include: • Our thoughts on the new Lanterns TV series trailer • Our favorite moments from DC Comics' Doomsday Clock storyline • The infamous Ace Ventura rhino prop being put up for sale • The recent bizarre Jim Carrey controversy circulating online If you enjoy: Superhero podcasts Comic book discussions Throwback movie reviews Pop culture debates Nerd culture analysis MCU & DC commentary Retro comic book movies “So bad it's good” movie discussions …then you'll feel right at home with the SuperHero Homies. About SuperHero Homies SuperHero Homies is a superhero and pop culture podcast where we discuss Marvel, DC Comics, comic book movies, superhero TV shows, Star Wars, and everything in nerd culture. A pair of Comic Book roles provide essential lifelines for talent in difficult times! The stories of Iron Man and Deadpool, and the transformative cinematic opportunities they provided!
What's the difference between a concept and a conceit — and why does confusing the two quietly sabotage so many comics? In this episode, Brad and Dave break down one of the most important (and misunderstood) distinctions in storytelling. A concept is the engine that drives your story forward. A conceit is a clever wrapper that might look great… but doesn't go anywhere. If you've ever launched a comic that felt strong at first but ran out of momentum, this conversation will hit home. We talk about: Why constraints actually fuel creativity How to test whether your idea has real staying power The danger of building a comic around a gimmick And how to strengthen your story before you spend months drawing it Today's show: A comic without recurring characters UPDATE: ComicLab accent challenge UPDATE: Amazon Advantage UPDATE: DoubleDogBook.com How to do a sarcastic word balloon Takeaways Character design plays a crucial role in storytelling. Comics can thrive without a central protagonist. Idea-driven comics have historical precedence. Naming a comic can be a challenging but essential task. Feedback is vital in the creative process. Constraints can enhance creativity and focus. Monosyllabic titles are often more memorable. A good title can significantly impact a comic's success. The creative journey involves trial and error. Sharing ideas at smaller levels can reveal what resonates. Avoiding sunk cost fallacy is crucial in decision-making. Amazon Advantage can lead to unexpected losses. Understanding the costs of shipping is essential for profitability. Sarcasm in comics requires careful visual and textual cues. Bold lettering can enhance the impact of sarcasm. Walt Kelly's techniques in lettering were innovative but sometimes excessive. Comic creators should consider the visual presentation of dialogue. A well-crafted word balloon can convey emotion effectively. The legacy of past cartoonists informs current practices.
