On this episode of Talking Strange, host Aaron Sagers is joined by Rodney Barnes — the award-winning writer behind Killadelphia, Blacula, The Boondocks, and the new hardcover collection of the Batman vs. Werewolf book, Batman: Full Moon for DC Comics (available May 13). He's also the voice of the successful narrative horror podcast Run, Fool! and will soon be taking on new stories in the 30 Days of Night universe. Barnes discusses how growing up as a Universal Monsters kid helped shape his creative voice and love of horror, and he shares stories of how the tradition of oral storytelling — especially spooky stories told by his grandmother — deeply influenced his perspective and writing. From the gothic shadows of Dracula to the caped crusader battling werewolves, Barnes explores the intersection of pop culture, race, and the supernatural in his work. Whether you're a comic book fan, a lover of monster movies, or someone who grew up hearing stories that made you look twice at the dark, this conversation is for you. Subscribe, rate, and share if you're strange like us. More about Rodney Barnes: Rodney Barnes is an award-winning writer, producer, and comic book creator whose vibrant, emphatic voice has established him as a Hollywood mainstay. Barnes was most recently an executive producer and writer for HBO's Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty, chronicling the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Showtime Lakers. His publishing imprint, Zombie Love Studios, is dedicated to storytelling through unique BIPOC perspectives, including Killadelphia—nominated for an Eisner Award, Blacula: Return of the King—an adaptation of the cult horror classic, Monarch—an apocalyptic sci-fi adventure series following a group of Compton school kids in the midst of an alien invasion, and Florence & Normandie—a collaboration with artist/entertainer Xzibit. Additionally, Barnes hosted the Winning Time Podcast, and is host & co-creator of the Run, Fool! podcast—a collaboration between MrBallen, At Will Media, and Campside Media with 800K downloads a month and ranked 38th in true crime fiction podcasts. _______________________________________________________________ The Talking Strange Show with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as experts in all things strange and unexplained. On today's episode, I talk to comics creator Daniel Warren Johnson. Originally from Massachusetts, Daniel started in the world of cartooning with his web-comic Space Mullet, which ran from 2012 to 2017. This led to work at Dark Horse, and eventually Image published his comic Extremity, which netted him an Eisner Award nomination (he would go on to win four for other things). Since then, he's created a number of other series for Image including Murder Falcon, Do a Powerbomb and his latest The Moon is Following Us. In addition, Daniel is writing (and doing some of the art for) the new Transformers series for Skybound, and it's a delight! As I was setting up the round of interviews that would be our first Women In Comics Feature to celebrate Women's History Month on the podcast, I wanted to get a variety of voices included to represent different facets of the medium. That lead me to reaching out to Barbra Dillon, Editor-In-Chief of Fanbase Press, a GLAAD Winning and Eisner and Harvey Nominated publisher and geek culture website. Who better than Barbra to cover the angle from both the vantage point of a small indy comics publisher as well as comics journalism. Two birds, one stone and I've been meaning to catch up with her since last Fall when their anthology Ripple Effects was crowdfunding which was of considerable interest to me as its focus is to increase awareness of and highlight people with incurable non-visible diseases like myself.   I don't know of another comics journalism outlet that shares such a strongly aligned set of core values like Fanbase does so it was a pleasure to finally get a chance to catch up with her and chat about representation in the medium. Fanbase are celebrating their 15th Anniversary in 2025 and provide a range of unique and diverse programming to support creators in the medium. Please take a moment to check them out if you haven't already. Mission Statement Fanbase Press celebrates fandoms and creates new ones! As a GLAAD Media Award-winning and an Eisner and Harvey Awards-nominated comic book publisher and geek culture website, Fanbase Press produces new and distinctive works, as well as daily reviews, interviews, and podcasts, that span the pop culture spectrum and give voice to the themes, ideals, and people that make geekdom so exceptional. Fanbase Press believes that #StoriesMatter. Acknowledging the importance of stories and the impact of storytelling is at the core of the organization. Universal communication through stories allows us to examine the essentials of human existence, to understand ourselves better and to grow and/or heal, to pass on important values, knowledge, and lessons to the next generation, and to connect with one another through empathy and compassion. Fanbase Press holds a commitment to looking beyond the simple entertainment factor of pop culture storytelling in order to find the value that each story offers to us as individuals, our world, and/or the human condition. The company was founded in 2010 (originally under the name Fanboy Comics) rebranded to Fanbase Press in May 2016 by co-founders Barbra and Bryant Dillon. Fanbase Press' graphic novels, including the 2024 GLAAD Media Award-winning Four-Color Heroes, 2023 Eisner and Harvey Award-nominated Ripple Effects, 2018 Eisner Award-nominated Quince, the 2020 IPPY Award-winning Quince: The Definitive Bilingual Edition hardcover, the 2022 International Latino Book Award-winning Nuclear Power, the 2019 IPPY Award-winning A Geek's Guide to Cross-Stitch: Journeys in Space, the 2014 Bram Stoker Award-nominated Fearworms: Selected Poems, The Sequels, The Margins, The Gamma Gals, Something Animal, Identity Thief, The Arcs, and Penguins vs. Possums, are available online at www.fanbasepress.com. It feels like this interview has been a long time coming. Anyone that has been following the Comic Book Yeti crew the past few years knows that Jimmy always tries to shine a light on letterers, so finally letterer and writer Joe Caramagna joins Jimmy to talk a little about his career in comics. Joe and Jimmy also talk about Joe teaming up with astronaut Leland Melvin to write Space Chasers, a middle-grade graphic novel about Tia Valor and a diverse ensemble of kids training to launch to an advanced space station. Listeners might remember Leland Melvin as the astronaut who included his dogs in his NASA photo. Joe talks about collaborating with Leland Melvin on the series (this is the first volume), what Joe learned while working on the series, the things that were important to Joe to include, why he would never want to travel to space, and how his daughter wants to be an astronaut. Plus since Jimmy knows Joe loves donuts he invites Joe to Delaware to treat him to Sleeping Bird Doughnuts.   From the publisher:  When Tia Valor takes a test on a whim for an exclusive NASA program for middle schoolers, she never thought she'd pass. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes Last Wednesday morning, Marvel Television treated fans to the long awaited first official teaser trailer for Daredevil: Born Again. The trailer was met with universal praise for its dark tone and brutal depictions of violence, elements that it shares with the beloved Netflix series. The nine-episode first season premieres March 4 on Disney Plus. In some Captain America news, it was confirmed that Brave New World will have a total runtime of one hour and 58 minutes, which ties it with Ant-Man & The Wasp as the seventh shortest MCU flick to date. It will also be the first Captain America film under two hours long. It's brand new news today, Ryan Gosling is in negotiations to star in Shawn Levy's future Star Wars film. Levy's film has been in development with Lucasfilm since 2022, and getting Gosling seems like it could be a major step in getting the film truly off the ground and into the galaxy far, far away. Last we knew, the film was not to be set within the Skywalker saga The use of AI has been a frequent hot topic for Hollywood in recent years, reaching a seeming fever pitch during the 2023 WGA and SAG AFTRA strikes as a major point of negotiation. While the dust seemed to have settled a bit with the resolution of those strikes, new controversies plaguing high profile films and filmmakers have brought the discussion back to the forefront. First, Taxi Driver writer and First Reformed director, Paul Schrader, opined, in a since much lambasted Facebook post, the benefits of using a platform like ChatGPT for film ideas, in contrast to waiting the months it can take writers to ideate. Elsewhere, awards season favorite and Oscar hopeful, The Brutalist, has come under fire after an editor revealed generative A.I. was used to enhance the authenticity of the lead performers Hungarian accents. Emily Beecham and David Krumholtz have signed on to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, portraying the parents of Kara Zor-El. Production on the DC Studios film commenced last week. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for “Until Dawn,” the live-action adaptation of the popular 2015 PlayStation horror game. The film is currently set to be released on April 25th. After nearly 15 years of shaping Spider-Man's adventures at Marvel Comics, Eisner Award winner Dan Slott is making the move to DC. The acclaimed writer will make his DC debut on Superman Unlimited, a new monthly series featuring art by American Vampire co-creator Rafael Albuquerque. Westworld star Thandiwe Newton and Silo's Steve Zahn have joined Paul Rudd and Jack Black in Columbia's comedy reboot of Anaconda. Nintendo has revealed its Switch 2 console with first look images and a teaser trailer, confirming a 2025 release. Uma Thurman has joined the cast of Dexter series Dexter: Resurrection and will star alongside Michael C. Hall. Filmmaker David Lynch, who created celebrated counterculture classics like Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and co-created Twin Peaks, has died at 78. A24 and Picturestart are teaming with director Charlie Polinger for a revisionist and darkly comedic take on The Masque of The Red Death, based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe. Sydney Sweeney is currently in negotiations to star. After extensive negotiations, IMAX has secured a deal to exclusively screen Greta Gerwig's Netflix adaptation of "Narnia" in theaters worldwide for two weeks, beginning Thanksgiving 2026, before its streaming debut that Christmas. Joel McHale has joined the cast of Scream 7 and will play Mark Evans, the husband to Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott. A24 has released the first trailer for upcoming horror film Opus, which hits theaters on March 14th. The film stars Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Murray Bartlett, Juliette Lewis, and Amber Midthunder.

Since then, Jason has written acclaimed runs on both mainstream and his own creator-owned comics, some of which include Wolverine and the X-Men, The Punisher, The Avengers, Thor, Scalped, Once Upon a Time at the End of the World, Southern Bastards and many, many more. Currently, Jason is writing the fantastic Superman reboot Absolute Superman, as well as a brilliant Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series for IDW! DC December continues! Christopher Cantwell is an Eisner Award nominee and one of the writers and creators of the TV show Halt and Catch Fire. Christopher joins Jimmy on the Cryptid Creator Corner to talk about Plastic Man No More (the trade is out April 8, 2025) as well as the brand new Challengers of the Unknown (issue #1 is out December 18, 2024). Christopher talks about this new series, working with artist Sean Izaakse, the history of the Challengers and what he loves about these characters. Plus, Jimmy and Christopher chat about Jimmy's favorite series that Christopher wrote: The Blue Flame (with Adam Gorham, Kurt Michael Russell, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou). This was such a fun conversation that you don't want to miss.   Challengers of the Unknown From the publisher Throughout DC's history, the Challengers of the Unknown have been on the front lines when it comes to investigating the strange and unusual. This December, these investigators of the weird make their DC All In debut with the new Challengers of the Unknown, a five-issue limited series written by Christopher Cantwell (Plastic Man No More!) with art by Sean Izaakse (Green Arrow). Spinning out of Absolute Power and the DC All In Special, the terror of the Darkseid shock wave has cascaded across the DC Universe…tearing open the very fabric of time and space itself! Only one band of super-scientists have the right stuff to challenge the fate of a universe: the Challengers of the Unknown. Ace Morgan, June Robbins, Prof Haley, Red Ryan, and Rocky Davis, adventurers “living on borrowed time,” run day-to-day operations for the Justice League's Watchtower base in orbit above Earth, collaborating with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the rest of the League to seal the rifts that threaten the galaxy. But a mysterious foe from the Challengers' past lurks in the shadows, and its connection to the Darkseid wave will put not only the Challengers, but all of the DC Universe on borrowed time. Plastic Man No More From the publisher Eel O'Brian might be a superhero now—but before he was anything else, he was a crook. Until the accident that turned him into the pliable Plastic Man, Eel was bad to the bone…and just because he no longer has bones doesn't mean that's not still true. When an incident on a Justice League mission leads to catastrophic cellular damage, Plastic Man discovers he just might be out of time to make amends for the past he's tried hard to outrun—or to save the soul of his son, who (unfortunately for him) might have inherited more from dear old Dad than just his superpowers. Comics legend Marjorie Liu joins our host Lodro Rinzler to discuss an incredibly fun and disturbing issue of X-Men! Before we sell you on all the hilarity, let's get real for a moment: Marjorie Liu is not just an extraordinary comic writer, she's also just a lovely, grounded, kind human being. It was an honor to have her on the show. Okay, now on to the silliness. In this episode we discuss how Marjorie writes from the gut and, in her words, her gut is really weird. Also, how she went through a cathartic experience writing X-23 (now Wolverine). Topics include: teenage Marjorie wrote X-Men fanfic in the Marvel Universe, a hat and trenchcoat is more than sufficient to disguise a six foot, blue, furry man Charles Xavier sends postcards from space Mesmero is a bag of dicks Also Mesmero read a Playboy once and thinks that's how people should always pose the Phoenix force has limits on how badly you can mess up Jean Grey At the end we answer questions from YOU! Yes, you! Then Marjorie Liu spits wisdom on how to be yourself even and especially when others are trying to tell you who you should become and how to transmute hatred and negativity into gold. This episode is not to be missed! Marjorie Liu is an attorney and New York Times bestselling novelist and comic book writer. Her work at Marvel includes X-23, Black Widow, Han Solo, Dark Wolverine and Astonishing X-Men. She is also the co-creator of Monstress from Image Comics, which has won multiple Hugo Awards, British Fantasy Awards, the Harvey Award, and five Eisner Awards, making Liu the first-ever woman (and woman of color) to win an Eisner in the Best Writer category. She teaches comic book writing at MIT. Marjorie's extensive work with Marvel includes the Dark Wolverine series, NYX:  No Way Home, X-23, and Black Widow: The Name of the Rose. She received national media attention for Astonishing X-Men, which featured the gay wedding of X-Man Northstar and was subsequently nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for outstanding media images of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Welcome to Multiverse News, Your source for Information about all your favorite fictional universes. Marvel Studios surprised fans with our first official glimpse of the upcoming Thunderbolts* film, by quietly dropping the teaser trailer Monday morning. The footage, set to the tune of Where is My Mind? by The Pixies, features Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova, most heavily, and is in keeping with descriptions that came out of both D23 and San Diego Comic Con earlier this year, along with a few surprises. The search for the DCU's Hal Jordan has finally come to an end, according to sources from The Hollywood Reporter, with Emmy winner Kyle Chandler set to star in the HBO Lanterns series. Chandler's name was not among the top contenders being bandied about the last few weeks, which included the likes of Timothy Olyphant and Chris Pine, as well as Josh Brolin, as we previously reported. The Lanterns series, developed by Ozark's Chris Mundy, Lost's Damon Lindelof and Eisner Award winner Tom King, has often been likened to HBO's True Detective in terms of tone and story. Seems like we've been celebrating more box office wins than losses as of late, but Transformers: One was decidedly less than meets the eye, at least with audiences, as the animated prequel debuted to a soft $25 million, a near franchise low. The muted response may come as a bit of a surprise coming of the heels of strong critic reviews and an A Cinemascore, but neither were enough to dethrone reigning box office champ BeetleJuice BeetleJuice, which just held the top spot, making $26 million in its third week. Last week, Warner Brothers released the first trailer for Mickey 17, Bong Joon Ho's highly anticipated sci-fi film starring Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, Naomie Ackie, and Toni Collette. The film arrives in theaters on January 31, 2025. AMC has canceled Orphan Black: Echoes, after one season. Set in the near future, the sequel series starring Krysten Ritter shared the same world as the BBC cult hit starring Tatiana Maslany. Netflix's One Piece has cast Joe Manganiello as "Mr. 0" and Lera Abova as "Miss All Sunday" for Season 2. Director-writer Jared Bush is replacing Jennifer Lee as chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios. Lee will return to a filmmaking role at the company and will focus on writing and directing Frozen 3 and executive producing Frozen 4. Netflix has released the first teaser trailer for Squid Game season 2 which begins streaming on December 26th. Netflix announced The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep, an animated film debuting on February 11, 2025, with Doug Cockle reprising his voice role as Geralt of Rivia from the CD Projekt Red video games. An exclusive clip is now available online. Netflix has dropped the first teaser for Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, an animated series adaptation of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell video game created by Ubisoft. Liev Schreiber will voice Sam Fisher, the protagonist of the series. Warner Bros has confirmed that Baz Luhrmann's next feature film at the studio will be Jehanne d'Arc, an epic story about the French teenage military commander Joan of Arc. Tamara Smart is joining Percy Jackson and the Olympians as Thalia Grace, the demigod daughter of Zeus. She'll recur in season two, which is in production and slated for a 2025 premiere. Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are set to star in Emerald Fennell‘s feature adaptation of Wuthering Heights. MRC has tapped LuckyChap Entertainment to produce the film that is based on author Emily Brontë's classic novel of the same name. Warner Brothers has released the first trailer and poster for Sinners, the Prohibition era horror film from Ryan Coolger starring Michael B. Jordan that has been under wraps for the past year. The film hits theaters on March 7th, 2025. Daveed Diggs has been cast as a series regular for the fifth and final season of Amazon's The Boys.
