After revisiting The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967), which we'd both previously seen and disliked, we try Neil Jordan's Byzantium (2012), starring Saoirse Ronan and Gemma Arterton, to see if we like it any better.

Here's what we tried: Roasted chicken and rice with aji pepper sauce, Aji de gallina (Creamy spicy chicken served over potatoes and rice with olive and egg), and a special they were serving to celebrate Fiestas Patrias (Pervuian Independence) - Mazamorra Morada (Cinnamon spiced Purple Corn Pudding with plums) They are highly recommended by the show, this is some of the best food we've ever tried. Main Corpse Seal of Approval. Then, Matt hops up on his soapbox against the allure of serial killer culture, and instead covers the works and life of Sharon Tate, and the life she and her child could have continued to have, had it not been cut short by murderous cultists that Matt would rather no longer continue to name. You have homework at Matt's request: Go watch the movies Eye of the Devil, Fearless Vampire Killers, and Valley of the Dolls. The Creeps also talk about Christmas desserts, movie references, and Jack Palance.

Like it or not, failure is a part of creation, invention, and art. Sometimes, failure forces improvisation that creates something amazing; other times, not so much.  So, I wanted to look at failure in horror: how some filmmakers overcame major setbacks and Acts of God, but also look at the movies centered around human error, where one mistake creates a chain reaction that leads to death, dismemberment, and even doomsday!  I hope you enjoy the show! Movies discussed: Return of the Living Dead (1985) The Fly (1986) Open Water (2003) 28 Days Later (2003) Fearless Vampire Killers (1967) Gerald's Game (2017) The Descent (2006) The Coffee Table (2022)

They are at the 20th anniversary of Download festival, and it's their fourth time attending. Laurence expresses their honor to be part of such a significant milestone and reminisces about watching the festival on TV as kids and eventually getting the opportunity to perform. They even headlined a stage one year, which was an amazing experience. Pipeman and Laurence discuss the impressive lineup of this year's festival, including bands like Metallica, Slipknot, and Bring Me the Horizon, which brings a fresh energy to the UK music scene.Pipeman brings up an interesting story about Fearless Vampire Killers tricking everyone when they decided to reunite. They initially hoped for a small crowd of about 15 to 16 people, but word spread quickly, and the gig sold out. Despite the unexpected turnout, Laurence found the experience enjoyable, writing songs for a fake band and witnessing the excitement around it. Pipeman shares his own stories of bands performing under pseudonyms, like Soft White Underbelly, who turned out to be Blue Öyster Cult, and an Iron Maiden cover band that fooled the audience. The conversation takes a turn towards the future plans of Fearless Vampire Killers. Laurence reveals that they have several records lined up for release and plan to go on tours. Additionally, he mentions his passion for writing books related to the band's music, which are set in a fictional world called Grand Domino. The first two albums were conceptually connected to these books, and Laurence is eager to release the next installment soon. Reuniting as a band has been a rejuvenating experience for them, bringing back the sense of connection and camaraderie they had growing up together in a small town.Pipeman and Laurence discuss the evolution of their music, acknowledging that it has become less frantic compared to their early days. The sixth and final film in our Self-Aware Horror cycle is the landmark exploitation film, The Last House on the Left (1972). Made off the proceeds of a successful pornographic film, this genuinely gonzo horror film sparked the careers of two kings of horror, Wes Craven and Friday the 13th creator, Sean Cunningham. On the surface, this rape-revenge exploitation film plays it straight: shock, rape, murder, revenge. But beneath the schlock is an avant-garde rip current that is essentially a middle finger to American Exceptionalism, a canary in the coalmine for a desiccated and fraying empire. This is a bizarre juxtaposition that never really settles right in your stomach. What is depicted vs what you feel seems separated by a grand canyon of satire, which is why we chose this as our final film in our Self-Aware Horror series. For our chaser film, we try to decipher The Fearless Vampire Killers (1967). It is a lark, a common parody, or is there something more going on in Roman Polanski's first major studio film. The year after Vampire came out, modern horror began with The Night of Living Dead. We try to decide whether Vampire Killers was a harbinger or an anachronism.

Our eternal friends the Dom Deluise Patreon Pals are in on the mysterious fun with us this week as we review three of their (semi-)mystery movie picks! Up first! It's Louis Malle's 1958 debut Elevator to the Gallows, a strikingly photographed French film noir with a Miles Davis soundtrack. Picked by Listener Luke! Next up! We double dip on the French tip with another franco-feature, the sparse but bloody Revenge (from 2017)! It's more or less what you've seen from prior rape/revenge flicks, but with vastly more shots of butts and open wounds on Frenchmen's feet. Thanks to Aaron for picking it! Finally! Of course, it's 2018's The Clovehitch Killer, because we already reviewed The Office Killer, The Killer Tomatoes/Klowns/Bimbos/Workouts/Sharks, The Driller Killer, The Thrill Killers, Honeymoon Killers, and Fearless Vampire Killers - and didn't want ol' Clovehitch to feel left out. Stars Dylan McDermott. Picked by Travis. All this plus the Garfield poop update, Parker & Sam: A Love Story, casting for the next Dorito's packaging, Benedict Cumberbatch? I hardly knew her batch, Kevin's minority opinion corner, Kevin's off-mic snickerdoos, Parker's moving furniture, Sean's stuck in a fuzzy Skype session, checking your bagel qualifications, Miles on the track, donut shop payphones, James "King" Hong, nerd news and even more! But not before celebrating new features on the site, including a Comments field for every film, a weekly Top Ten, movies Free to View for all (registered) and a special category for Vinegar Syndrome films. Integration with PlayPilot, JustWatch and Letterboxd is imminent and Roku, Android and iOS apps not far off.  There is also the cinema screening of "Besökarna / The Visitors" (1988) at Stockholm's Klarabiografen this Sunday 30 January 14:30.  "Dracula (the Dirty Old Man)" (1969) finds the Count living in a cave, sporting a Jewish accent, bad hairpiece and called 'Mr Alucard' (Dracula backwards). His sidekick Irving Jackalman brings nubile women to the cave to be tied, stripped and have their breasts bitten by a bat. "Guess What Happened to Count Dracula?" (1970) is wackiness of the highest order. Sporting a goatie beard and bad Bela accent, Count Adrian and his ghouls run "Dracula's Dungeon," a bizarre Hollywood nightclub.  "Sex and the Single Vampire" (1970). John Holmes is Count Spatula in his acting debut, where he tried to be funny and only gets his famous schlong out towards the end. Horny couples arrive at a haunted house for the Count to ogle and try to drain them of blood. Rude, raunchy, and ridiculous horror sex comedy. "The Vampire Happening" (1971) is what happens when you cross "The Fearless Vampire Killers" (1967) with "Rocky Horror Picture Show" (1975). Pia (Elvira Madigan) Degermark is a Hollywood actress who inherits a castle in Transylvania.  Director Freddie Francis considered this nudie horror parody a 'disaster', but it is fun viewing today. "Dracula Sucks" (1978). Prof Van Helsing thinks bite marks on patients at a sanatorium are the work of Dracula in this film, considered the most star-studded X rated film ever made, with Annette Haven, Seka, John Leslie, Serena, John Holmes (again) and many others.  "Vampire Hookers" (1978) sees a bevy of female vampires lure their customers back to the lair of aged vampire (John Carradine)."Mad Love Life of a Hot Vampire" (1971) is a horror comedy where Dracula lives in Vegas and sends out his female vampires to collect blood in the most unusual ways. Guess where they bite their male victims. Ouch! There is also "The Sadist With Red Teeth" (1971), "Condemned to Live" (1935) and "House on Bare Mountain" (1962), which all feature vampires in some erotic variant. We've also curated a Sexy Vampire Spotify playlist for your enjoyment. If you are reading this far, write us to tell us what you would like to see on Cultpix and please rate this podcast wherever it is that you're downloading it from.

Get ready to "say a prayer" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 2002's Dance of the Vampires on episode nineteen of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT DANCE OF THE VAMPIRES Based on the Roman Polanski film The Fearless Vampire Killers, Dance of the Vampires follows Professor Abronsius as he attempts to prove the existence of vampires in Transylvania while his bumbling assistant Alfred falls for innkeeper's daughter Sarah, unaware that she is being pursued by the mysterious Count von Krolock. The musical features a book by Jim Steinman, Michael Kunze, and David Ives and music and lyrics by Jim Steinman. Academy Award-winning film director Roman Polanski was inspired to adapt his cult comedy for the musical stage after being approached to work on a theatrical production of Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire. Composer Jim Steinman and book writer/lyricist Michael Kunze were ultimately chosen to collaborate based on both of their previous bodies of work, with Steinman literally being chosen by the director after putting 5 of his preexisting songs into a rough outline by Kunze (all of which remained in the final version of the show, including the hit song "Total Eclipse of the Heart"). The show, then known as Tanz der Vampire, originally opened on October 4, 1997 in Vienna, Austria where it ran for over 2 years. A new production opened in Germany following its closing and has played somewhere in the country almost consistently to this very day. Because of that, Tanz de Vampire is one of the most successful musicals in European history. From its premiere, English producers were seeking to bring the show to English-speaking countries. Composer Steinman was no stranger to the theater scene in New York, having spent five years under the professional wing of New York Shakespeare Festival founder Joseph Papp in the early Seventies. After briefly considering a West End run, it was decided to bring the musical (now titled Dance of the Vampires) to Broadway instead. After several failed attempts, many rewrites, and replacements on the creative team, Dance of the Vampires finally opened December 9, 2002. The Broadway version of the show was critically lambasted and the work of lead performer Michael Crawford was reviewed particularly harshly. When the reviews came out, Jim Steinman made a show of his disapproval of the project by not attending opening night and publicly distancing himself from the show.  On January 25, 2003, after 56 performances, Dance of the Vampires closed. According to The New York Times, it was "one of the costliest failures in Broadway history", losing roughly $12 million, easily eclipsing the infamous musical Carrie.   Original Broadway Cast Michael Crawford as Count Giovanni Von Krolock Mandy Gonzalez as Sarah René Auberjonois as Professor Abronsius Max von Essen as Alfred Ron Orbach as Chagal Leah Hocking as Magda Liz McCartney as Rebecca Asa Somers as Herbert Mark Price as Boris Erin Leigh Peck as Zsa-Zsa E.
